Unresolved: The Iran Threat

  • Post-October 7th, Iran's presence in the Middle East-and on the world stage-is growing stronger, many say, given its nuclear ambitions and its use of proxies in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, most recently disrupting shipping in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Its regional dominance is expanding, but is it also emerging as a global threat as it aligns with other authoritarian regimes? In Open to Debate’s Unresolved format and in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations, National Security Council and State Department veterans will debate Biden’s Iran diplomacy, the country's use of proxies in the Middle East, its nuclear ambitions, and whether Iran now poses a threat to the global order.
This debate was recorded live on January 25, 2024, in Washington D.C. at the Council on Foreign Relations. @cfr
    Feature Debate Topics:
    Has Biden’s Iran Diplomacy Failed?
Can Israel Live with a Nuclear Iran?
Does Iran Pose a Threat to the Global Order?
    Experts:
Michael Doran, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East at the Hudson Institute
Barbara Slavin, Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Center
Ray Takeyh, Senior Fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations

Iran is currently under hostage by extremist Mullah's who survive thanks to "Western" sanctions and isolation. One of the oldest nations in the world can rebuild itself into a prosperous and thriving society but only if its society is helped to develop and openly interact with the world. Sanctions and isolation only serve to strengthen extremists. Imagine the change in Iran if its streets were flooded with foreign tourists and businesses helping foster new friendships and understandings, spreading messages of peace and hope that would strengthen the domestic society to demand internal changes and progress.

@@farsalami8605no. As an Iranian , It is clear that Iran doesn’t want any nuclear weapons and the reason is clear. they are looking for an agreement with US because both Iran and US are tired of fighting with each other. Iran doesn’t want any nuclear weapons and prefer to be a normal country like other countries instead of being a nuclear power with heavy sanctions like north korea. Of course if US refuse any negotiation with Iran , then finally Iran create the nuclear weapons. But now they are waiting for the next government in US to see what’s going on then and negotiate with them not with a weak government like Joe Biden.

And believe that today the public opinion of the Middle East region in Arab and Islamic countries and even in Europe and the Far East has become very radical and anti-American because of vetoing and fully supporting the conditions that you know well !!!
Today it has much higher enrichment because of Trump and tearing up the nuclear deal. The leaders of the Arab countries may be in the same direction as America,
but the Arab nations are completely in the opposite direction.
And since the Iraq and Afghanistan war,
it has made IRAN realize that it needs to design political chess in the region so that it does not become like Iraq and Afghanistan.

Isreal demography is less than 10 million, and Iran 80 millions. In the past, Isreal had a total supremacy in technology, now Iran produces its own weapons, it gets help from China and Russia. You don't need to go to Harvard to know that Isreal will have a hard time winning against Iran without the US. We need a diversity in the US political leadership. All these people come from the same ivy league schools, they study the same things and have the same world view. They took us to Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya.

@jackbolder5734 I don't know if you know how the US government works. Our government is influenced by corrupt organizations( tink tank, NGO, Lobby) led by corrupt experts who only defend the interest of special groups. The regular Americans dont have any voice in Washington. They are bombarded with propaganda 24/7 through mainstream media owned by billionaires, making them vote against their own interests. Who in his right mind can believe that democracy can survive in such a social, cultural, and wealth inequality environment such as the US society? How can a US citizen with 50000 income have the same voice as another citizen will 1 billions? The billionaires have lobbyists, and the ordinary Americans have none. These people on the panel advocating for more intervention in the world are part of these organizations. We have trillion dollars debts and 1000s of wound soldiers whose welfare will continue to dig our national debts for years to come, infracstruture issue, obesity and mental health crises. Still, we have experts who think that fighting more wars and financing other countries' wars is the way to go.

@beback_ I think that it should be mandatory for any politician who want to be a senator, house representatives, or president to meet at least 100 disable veterans and their families to understand the consequences of their decisions. America was better off when it was led by presidents who served and fought wars. We now have an elite who comes from these Ivy League universities and who doesn't understand reality. The consequences of the war in the Middle East are trillions of dollars spent, 1000s of Americans killed, and 1000s of other wounded that we will continue to support for the years to come, increasing our national debts. We didn't get any strategic gain there. The same people are advocating for a conflict against Iran and the houthis. None of these people can tell us what the US gains fighting this wars. The Chineses don't even have to do anything. They just have to let us waste our human and hardware resources in the Middle East.

Iran sees itself as a defender of the Middle East. They freed Iraq, Syria, and Yemen from western aggression. These Arab leaders are nothing besides puppet governments, and if not for Iran, the whole Middle East would have been colonised by the US and its allies. Stop the attacks, apartheid behaviour, occupation of the West Bank, and colonialism attitude so Iran feels safe and secure, and stop whatever they are doing. They've been under existential threat for 45 years.

We have pressured Iran for the last 45 years in every way possible. Even Russia and China were in our camp against them , they had no choice but to dig deep and now they are benefiting from their struggle and not dependent on super powers . It would have been a different story had we played nice to them . The nuke deal is a good example of what I’m talking about and even today there are those who think it was the right thing to get of the deal which has proven to be the biggest blunder of US policy towards Iran.

In the event of Iran becoming nuclear, it will act in the same way that Russia does in Europe and the Balkans, or perhaps it's better to say as North Korea does in East Asia, where every day one must expect a new threat. The Iranian government has not yet fully armed itself with ballistic missile technology and drones, and has targeted all the surrounding countries as well as the interests of America and Israel. Only during Soleimani's time, more than 600 missiles were fired at Israel, the consequences of which, in the absence of effective Iron Dome performance, are imaginable. Now, imagine if such a government, which adheres to nothing but its dominance and permanence and shows no mercy even to the 85% majority of its people who oppose this regime, were to arm itself with more powerful weapons. It would certainly kill several people instead of just three, and then at a potential negotiation table, which people like Barbara hope for and which the American Democratic and left parties support this line of thought, it would make demands from the West that are practically impossible. Given that current leaders benefit from modeling Putin and the model of the Communist Party in China and South Korea, and are constantly trying to move leftward and close the country more tightly, therefore, due to a lack of correct psychological and ideological understanding of the Iranian regime, this has led to errors in analysis, especially among the American left (unless what they say is different from what they truly believe and these claims are only made to persuade public opinion). If the current superpower is truly seeking to solve the current problem in the Middle East, the best choice is the rise of a government leaning towards the West and creating an influential ally in the region that, instead of causing instability throughout the area, would itself contribute to stability and the preservation of American hegemony, as was the successful experience during the Shah's time. However, this government must be fully under the supervision of Western advisors in the initial stages to lay down and teach the basics of democracy or at least social democracy, so that first the society's elites and then independent organizations and institutes can be established and trained. Iran is very different from Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Despite the government's efforts, the Iranian public has a positive view of the West and America and is even a better ally for Israel than America. By removing Iran from the orbit of totalitarian and politically communist-aligned governments, the following achievements are obtained:
    - Stability in the Persian Gulf oil sector and more opportunity for the replacement of shale oil until it becomes cost-effective
    - Preserving the Middle East as an energy supplier to China and preventing its decline before the infrastructure for production in America is prepared, aiding in the control of market instability and supply chain for goods, and helping to control short-term inflation in the West
    - Preserving the security of Israel and preventing insecurity and securing the interests of the Jewish lobby
    - Preserving the energy transportation corridor (Strait of Hormuz) and controlling it as a lever for controlling China by America
    - Given the suitable demography for the next decade, some industries have the potential to be transferred to Iran
    - Preventing the connection and formation of the Silk Road and circumventing the strategic sphere of America
    - Preventing a crisis in the Middle East and controlling the flow of Afghan, Syrian, and Iraqi refugees to the West and preventing organized and state-run human and drug trafficking
    - Although regime change is not easy, with the current potential of the Iranian people and the deep incompetence and corruption of the government in managing it, it may be achievable with a bit of wisdom and less cost than a day or two of bombing in Yemen or Iraq, and America's experience in this matter is entirely feasible, and now is the time to decide. The worst-case scenario for the region is inaction, neither war nor peace, which even if there is complete peace with the government, the government will collapse within less than a year by the people, but then there will be severe chaos and disorder.

As an Iranian living in Iran let me say i whole heartily agree with Mr Duran on Iranian aspersions, vision and goals, he is spot on for the exception of popularity of the revolution, however i must also say that Iranian positions, aspersions and goals are what they are because of people like him and policies created to destabilize, limit and contain Iran. So yes he understands the situation very well and also his policies are the cause.
    Thank you Duran and co.

@kamranaldavood9249 I had never come across any of these individuals before and do not know their personal history or ideas which is why it was relevant to me to observe the manner in which they respected each other in this debate. Having respect for different opinions and hearing them out respectfully is too uncommon these days but more importantly a mutual respect and attempt at understanding differences is relevant to conflict resolution. How was Barbara reflecting the very Opinions she was putting forward? The discrepancy between her voiced opinion and her personal behaviour spoke volumes, she was very intolerant rather than standing confident in her own assertions she was compelled to talk over, interrupt and deride an oppositional view. Have no idea even who Duran is but it is always good to hear a spectrum of viewpoints from which to help form ones own. Best wishes to you.
