What a blessing!! Humbling to hear you speak about the children that you take care of even if it’s for a short amount of time.

I agree, though I prefer not to think of either reunification or adoption as the goal. I believe in permanency as the goal. If a reunification is safe, stable, timely, and will be permanently sustainable then it's the right thing. Purely by the numbers reunification often doesn't hold - and when that happens children experience a second round of trauma and can find it hard to form healthy attachments. The best, long-term interests of a child need to be weighed more heavily against legal rights.
I do also believe the system doesn't do enough to support recovering birth parents towards that end. Everything seems geared towards treating symptoms as opposed to the underlying cause, leaving birth parents a 'checklist' of goals that may not really change or address the behaviors that caused the separation to begin with.

We definitely need more prevention efforts and programs to work with families before problems escalate to children needing Foster care. That would be better for the kids and families.
