  • This documentary is about the surprisingly competitive world of bird watching.
    Featuring Lee G. R. Evans of UK400.
The Other Side was was a documentary strand from early 2000's on random subjects which broadcast on late night Channel 4, which is notably under represented on CZcams.

People who have to be top, every year, on a birding list for a city, state, county, providence, parrish, or country are themselves a really rare group and they are the ones who are most likely to lie about the species they're seeing. They won't lie about the ultra rare birds, the ones only see every 5 years or so, but they will lie about the ones that are seen every year but seen by fewer than 10% of birders. Listen to the way the earring guy talks down a guy who has someone funding his daily birding. It's pure distain and "how dare you" contempt for anyone who might knock them off the top spot.
I've always found it odd that people who put up big numbers rarely ever are seen out birding by others and rarely will they bird with others.

Jealousy is an awful thing and Lee is the most jealous of them all he shows. He talks about cheating but is determined to win at any cost including ruining someones reputation because they have seen more than he has. A pathetic human being

As a person who has always loved birds & spotting them i can honestly say that an on/off and ad hoc relationship with bird watching is as good as any, and is just as significant as these mad obsessions. You either sense the magnificence of the phenomenon related to birds or you don't & it just isn't possible to be more aware / professionally better at that sense of the place. Bird watching is not improved or somehow more enjoyable by spotting up to 378 different birds either. Thats just a way some choose to be close to this earthly phenomenon & so be it as its great some do it. Because there is definitely a case where the 'UK400' lifestyle is interesting to a surprising level in its own right. I'd not be seen dead doing it. But ? - well Uk400 is providing people who love the idea of knowing whats about with fantastic information. The rarities are informed in a way they never could be otherwise & its hard not to be intrigued by more i.e the travels/reality in the process of the pro twitcher obtaining such information. Remarks in the video are right concerning the group dynamics that go on during all the wild goose chases as they are indeed fascinating in a good reality TV way. In fact this style of bird spotting pursuit is to be of much wider appeal probably, but it needs people who know how to separate personal need from a community wide spirit. Essentially the end product is something that gets presentation from a media perspective as if it is still insider gossip. When that grows up into 'information' then those who'd be interested to see more content would probably buy in. But if its to remain like a metaphor / forever a schoolboy shinning up the tree while truanting / it can never get there.
If i were you LGRE i'd rethink the the whole POINT. All you are managing to do is diminish the returns, when actually theres such 'nerd' gold here the lot of you should be a fair bit more affluent by now

Walking alone is the best way to see a rare bird in Britain, I've seen a few but never have and never would report them for a bunch of pseudo middle class Muppets to turn up with their thousands of £s worth of viewing equipment and disturb them.

It’s your opinion your entitled to it ..
However I do birdwatching alone I also have expensive optical gear but I may not report a rare find due to disturbances to the bird ..

lol i know some of the people are annoying, but with those 30, 50, 60x magnifying scopes, they are absolutely not disturbing the birds

I can't believe what I have just watched. How can you claim to be the judge and juror and also be participating in what you are judging. There should be total impartiality but I am not seeing it from this Evans person!!

Evans was the person for about a decade with the highest number of sightings of bird species seen in a year, he lost that position two years on the trot, and it made him so bitter and angry that someone else could do better
