As someone who literally wrote their master’s thesis on gay cowboys I can tell you it was one of those open secrets. The old west was mostly devoid of women so there was a lot of “mutual solace” as the history books label it. It was also common for there to be all male dances in the west where the “female” dancing partner would be designated by a white scarf tied around their arm. So it wasn’t necessarily accepting, but there was a a lot of “gay stuff” happening in the west. 🤠🏳️‍🌈

I think it was also easier for some trans people to live as their true gender because clothes were bulkier and just no one would have questioned a person as much, right?
In addition, people frequently moved out west to change their identities for other reasons, so gender would have been just as easy to change. I mean, obviously the hormones and the surgeries weren't available, but social transitioning would have been easier for most people, I think.

In the game Stardew Valley, you can get married to 12 different people, but also, in a later update they added an option where you can get the shadow monster that lives in the sewers to move in with you platonically, to get the same bonuses. 2:00 (Regarding gay cowboys, TLDR they did exist, and John Wayne types are just fiction.)
Kaz Rowe has a wonderful video about this. The truth is, being a cowboy was not glamorous, but it was also out of the eye of white cishet society. Both meant that the Wild West was filled with countless queer people, people of color, etc. Multiple trans people are documented, and were beloved in their communities!!
All that history was erased by Hollywood. 50s American nostalgia (and post-war politics) rewrote a historically diverse subculture into nothing but white, hypermasculine nationalists. The real people of the Wild West, for the most part, looked nothing like John Wayne.
Hope this provided some helpful details. In short, the Wild West was one of the safer places for queer people in US history. ❤

The funny thing is that in a lot of places and times with huge toxic masculinity problems, a certain type of male homosexuality was absolutely treated as an open secret or only shameful for the bottom. It’s like homophobic toxic masculinity loops right back around into a sort of "Why would a buncha lads need girls around" and "oh, he's a man's man" homoeroticism. You don’t see quite the same thing with lesbians, because toxic feminity isn't really A Thing in that way, although the femme4femme stereotype of a "girls' girl" does exist and often flies under homophobes' radar as "admirable female friendship".

In reference to the dog owners who broke gender norms, I have a pink leash for one of my roosters, and I bought a pink tutu as a joke for a rooster I no longer have, and he LOVED it. Whenever I put Penn into his tutu, he'd get all sorts of excited then zoom around the yard like he was showing off the fact that he was wearing something while everyone else was naked. It started as a gag costume only to be used on Halloween, special events, or to help people see roosters as something other than "inherently mean"... but it turned into Penn's Manly-Man-Bro outfit, if one were to judge based on his behaviour while wearing it.

Project = breeding with an end-goal, but that end-goal isn't quite achieved
Serama = smallest breed of chicken in the world, almost wiped out by a hurricane, and many Americans have since taken up trying to save the breed by starting with the breeds that Seramas were made from, which is primarily the Chabo (AKA Japanese Bantam), which is a miniature chicken that was then bred to have dwarfism in order to make them, as I call them, "low rider chickens" due to their legs being about a quarter the length of a normal chicken.
Penn looked slightly more Serama than Chabo, and his colouration was all black with a pale, sandy cape (feathers on the back of the neck from head to shoulders), and lemony feathers scattered over his back.

I mean, he wandered the lands with his 12 buddies, washing their feet, offering them his body at nice parties. That does sound kinda gay to me.
Now, some might argue that there was Maria Magdalena, but she could have been a friend, a cover wife, or just a symbol for his slight bi tendency (still 12:1 though).
And yeah, you COULD argue that the whole "I'm a virgin, it was actually god that made me pregnant" thing was an excuse for naïve Joseph, but that just would make Jesus cis and not less gay.

You actually had to call them, which had the added effect of helping them learn to come when their name was called! It's a lot harder to mix them up now, since he's a big ol' tank, and she's a dainty little thing, but at the time it was kinda funny that you actually had to see who came when you called to tell who was who.

1:12 I've been saying for a while, if you believe the biblical account either Jesus was a trans man, Mary was xy intersex and fertile, or God did something very not nice to a 14 year old girl (and yes that was Mary's most likely age when Joseph married her even though he was likely a full grown man.)

Concerning learning about 'cowboys' from the movies.
A lot of cowboys weren't white - virtually never seen in movies. Across the USA, estimates are that 25% of the cowboys were Afro-American and another 15% Hispanic/Native.
Particularly during cattle drives, cowboys lived in a mainly male environment. On an official level, cowboy culture was homophobic (like the rest of society) but it was much less uniform than settled culture. Like other homosocial subcultures (prison, hobo, or navy) gay relationships happened - not always consensually.
    And to add,
When I lived in Germany I traveled on the Cisalpine train. Guess they'll have to rename it the Normalalpine train. (The Cisalpine train goes around rather than through the alps.)
    And, your last question.
Gay awakening with Fred Jones in Scooby Doo - original version. (Fun facts from the original series: Shaggy was a varsity athlete in acrobatics while Fred was in the Drama Club. It was later on that the characters got flattened into narrow stereotypes.)

I’m sorry this is one of my favorite historical topics! The American west during the American Policy of Westward Expansion was INCREDIBLY gay, and trans. In addition to being very ethnically diverse. The idea of the white, traditionally handsome, straight, cis, outlaw is a construction of Hollywood in a fit of post period fascism

i think if someone said "trans women and normal women", i could think that it excludes cis neurodivergent women, cis queer women etc. Just specifically trans women and women who find themselves to be quite average in most aspects. I can't think of a context where it makes sense to say that, but it's theoretically possible, so i would have to consider it.

Charlie had run away from new england, and got work as a ranch hand. later on they became a stagecoach driver. definitely check them out. actually.... if you would have time to put into it, I would love to see a vid on trans people throughout history. we could hit the highlights. and there are a lot more trans men then you would think, even though the trans women get more media attention. stiupid misogony.

As for the wild west, i assume that much like most of history, it was way gayer then people give it credit for, where people just had open secrets. So that gay men could have "bros" who they spent all their time with and their wives just sat at home all day excited that they arent being beaten like their friends. Unfortunately, being a predator of any orientation was probably also a lot more common, considering how underage marriage wasn't as frownded upon as it is now and the witch hunt levels of victim blaming
