Lyrics
Take a girl like that
And put her in a natural setting
Like a cafe for example.
Along comes the boy
And he's looking for trouble
With a girl like that
With a girl like that.
Who knows what they'll decide to do.
Who knows what they'll get up to.
I'd love to know.
Wouldn't you?
I love to listen to Beethoven...
You think you know just what you want
But you have used that weapon against me.
Did I tell you I was lying by the way
When I said I wanted a new mink coat.
I was just thinking about
Something sleek
To wrap around my tender throat
I was dreaming like a Texan girl
A girl who thinks she's got the right to everything.
A girl who thinks she should have
Something extreme.
I love to listen to Beethoven... - Hudba
Thank God for the Eurythmics. ❤
They are truly one of the world's greatest musical artists, in my opinion. And _Savage_ is one of their best (and sadly, least appreciated) discs.
Annie losing her marbles…just fabulous!
The brilliance of this video cannot be explained in words. It's both creepy and classy.
I think it is simply true art Grybop?
I can. It's creepy and classy.
This is what happens when you drop a socially-imposed mask...
Says it all.Love Annie Lennox and all her work.Hits the senses.
When videos were art...
Oh man that power walk at the end is EVERYTHING.
And a total misunderstanding for you. Annie once asked says 'she turns from one monster into another-she cannot free herself from herself'. Again, she is a victim of men-this time rough men. 'I need a man' is no song of sexual freedom-it is actually the exact opposite...
Her posture is everything.
Where did she get that dress?
@@carstenkimmel7720 Yes, alas, this “monster” isn’t a victim.
@@trevorsommers3094 She is again a victim of a wrong perception of herself. Again she will be unhappy, desperate lost, desillusioned-and not free at all. 'You have placed a chill in my heart' points to that. Never underestimate the deliberate big part of kitsch in her transvestite 'I need a man' performance-she just needs a man-its not that she gets one. If she is free it would read 'I don't need a man'.
They actually released all of the videos together as a "musical film" - one song leading into the next, with Annie portraying multiple personalities. It's a great little movie and Annie Lennox proves to be a wonderful actress.
Really? Did it have a title? I would love to see it.
@@Mymumsey1 The Savage video album that accompanied the Savage record.
@@Mymumsey1 Savage
You can see all of her personalities in the Little Bird videoclip btw.
I have the 'Savage' video album on VHS 📼 tape and DVD. It's a "must have" for all fans. 'Savage' is peak Eurythmics.
pure art, the best band ever
This song is pure genius. Savage is Art!
THE MOST UNDERRATED EURYTHMICS SINGLE EVER
yep
ahhhh haaa ha ha ha hhha ahhh ha ha "Beethoven" ahhh haaa haaa woooo and that acid house refrain"
What you mean, It was a big hit single in many countries so who cares if they didn't get the whole jist of it-And plus Album it came off of Savage was a big to massive hit in many countries
agreed with u on that one
This is funny! Ha ha
This is how I feel in quarantine
same
She was way ahead of her time.
🤣🤣😂
But the clip is not about sitting at home. It is about an internal dialog at the background of a human mind.
The initial look of Annie Lennox means an internal parent, the girl means an internal child and the man in the dress means a shadow (rejected and forbidden features and desires of a psyche).
At the end they joined together and went out (came out).

Annie Lennox ladies and gentlemen! Absolutely mesmerising! She is shockingly good! One of the best and most charismatic female singers of all time!
This 4K version looks absolutely amazing. Apparently they just quietly replaced this video with a restored version from the original film reels in 2018, what a gift
Brilliant! Only Annie Lennox can go from looking impeccably tailored in the suit in the Sweet Dreams video to curvaceous in that cocktail dress....amazing singer and artist!!
I have never seen nor heard of this song, but it's SO out there! Bizarre, unique, nothing quite like it before or since. Leave it to Annie! She is an artist on ALL levels.
I was quite young when I first heard this. My sister had the whole SAVAGE album on tape and would listen in her car. Got into all of Annie Lennox NOT just the one song we probably should not even mention 😅 after hearing this song I can't even bring it to mind. Don't want to.
Hahaha so much good music ...I loved the album TOUCH, it was so great. Why were these songs never ever considered
Just the ONE.
That I'm not letting into my head.....
Yes thank god for my older sister who was old enough to have records that had this one. I loved playing the record on repeat
God bless Annie Lennox!!
A mind-bending masterpiece. There's only one Annie.
I’ve always been a Eurythmics fan (since the 80s) and when this song came out, I loved them even more because I too love to listen to Beethoven.
Well said
Me too 😆 I just discovered this song but I expected it was more truly centered on Beeth's musuc 😊
"Beethoven" was the perfect track to open Eurythmics' most creatively different from the albums before it. Synth colored their 1st -3rd while rock 4th and fifth. With this record, the band proved they still had plenty of creahivity in their veins. My fave!
I agree. And its' so amazing how their strongest, most unified album go such little attention (at least in the US). They went out with a bang, but no one seemed to hear it. MTV barely glossed over these videos.
It sounds a bit mad but in the UK when this came out we only had 4 tv channels, no 24 hour mtv or cable or whatever. The UK was a bit more dark overall the feeling in the 80s until acid house and rave kicked of a sort of cultural revolution. Maybe not having everything on tap made artists more creative.
Annie is so beautiful. I like her just like she is.
80s videos truly were masterpieces. Very few artists’ videos today can compare.
WAAAAAY ahead of its time. Disturbingly brilliant and beautiful.
Why is this sooo catchy??
80s was the catchiest decade for music
Another great "woman on the edge" video.
It's the bizarre-ness and originality that makes this song so appealing.
Theme of modernism's un-avoidable neurosis.
Caused by usual inner dogmas glued still in our mind.... At least that's what I Believe.😒😂
One of the best Eurythmics songs and one of their best videos. I love how this ending goes right into "I Need a Man". Brilliant!
Absolutely agree.
I don't need a heart breaker, fifty-faced trouble maker
Two-timing time taker, dirty little money maker
Muscle-bound cheap skate, low down woman hater
Triple-crossing double dater, yella bellied alligator - wooh
annie lennox would be a wonderful actress too.
+cosmicdrifter287 she said she wanted to go that way but never has due to certain things about the typical actor's life.
tall32guy have to say that i didn`t knew that for a fact, but it would certainly be a logical move.
exactly. Just my words.
Annie Lennox filmography has a list of tv and film movies
*****
so,there we go.
This video and song were playing on a massive projection screen the very first time I went to a night club at age 18 - watching this brought the whole night flooding back - the detail of conversations, friends I haven't thought about in years, the bouncer checking my ID, everything. Oh, the eighties, nineties, and my youth - where did youse all go.....???!!
Sounds like a pretty good night if you could find that today. Were the music and video in sync back in the day?
I realized I'm g@y & it's o.k. thanks to these vids lol
and this ladies and gents, is why the 80s will always be the greatest decade for music
This is so incredibly good.
Aside from the fantastic music they put out, the Eurythmics could also be counted on creating some truly great videos that still hold up decades later.
If Annie had not been in music, she certainly had the skills to be a great actor.
This flew under my radar. It's amazing.
It is. I've always 😍d this.
When she lets her inner voices out and stays smashing is fabulous!!!
Congratulations to Eurythmics for their induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They will be performing for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Nov. 2022 *NOW SHOWING ON HBO, DEC 2022*
Agreed.
Thank you so much for this HD version, i love to watch her going psycho!
I always felt that the Eurythmics and later Annie on her own really 'got' what video could do for a song. If you listen to just the song alone, you get the sense of a woman on the edge about to snap, but when you see this video, you get that even more intensely. It really enhances the song, and tells a story that leads into the other videos for the singles from this album. 'I Need A Man', also from Savage, features the character striding off at the end...I dont think anyone else did stories.
This is how you make a video folks!!!
Favourite song from Eurythmics. ❤
Amazing how this video and song STILL resonate today. True art.
When i was a kid, as a fan in the US, i was shocked that no one around
me knew of this record. This was their last album (for a while, at
least), and, i thought is was their best work EVER---as far as
continuity goes. No other album flowed as smoothly from track-to-track
and emotion-to-emotion as Savage. I honestly think America didn't
understand it because were simply too fickle to even care if it was good
album or not. All we care about it the next "hit" song.
Be fair. I didn't have much money as a youngster and no cable so I relied on the Radio. If I had known this album existed, I would have sold a kidney to buy it. I was not "fickle" I just had limited means.
"Savage" has always been my all time favourite album by the Eurythnics. It's adarkly dystopian sounscape. Musically and vocally they both poshed t to extrmes on the whole albu,. I loved this track when it was first released, thesense of dark irony nd a sense of what lies beneath the perfect surburbam house wife surface. It's one of ther most underatted albums and is a drk masterpiece. They did create a video/folm album with mini films for each track that was a VHS cassette, and I think they were one of the first to do do,I so hope one day it will be re-released as a DVD, Bits of it are here on youtube.Beethoven (I love To listen to) sounded like nothing else at the time and it still sounds good now.I loved all the singles from this album and hpw all the videos were linked together visually with the alter egos of Annie. (matt)
My favourite Eurythmics single! Should have been huge!!
Eurythmics' "Diary of a Mad Housewife" concept album. Fascinating project but not very accessible to the general pop audience at the time. Loved Annie's blonde persona!
I loved the album back then because of its experiments and it’s eccentricity. Still do.
The album was 'Savage' wasn't it?
@@Crispvs1 yup
Eurythmics were always ahead of their time
The final scene is beautifully framed and shot.
The genius of Annie, Dave and director Sophie Muller.
When Annie sez, “I was dreaming like a Texan girl...” I howled! It’s so true! I absolutely LOVE this song-and this video is EVERYTHING. I even love the way Annie sez the actual word “everything.”
I also love the way she trills the "r" when she says "throat"!
A girl that thinks she has the right to EVERYTHING.....a girl that thinks she should have something extreme.....💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Why did you howl? What's t reference of this? The meaning? From another country or from my own ignorance I don't get it :)
@@kalmia01 it’s the poetic license that Annie uses to describe how she feels in this moment. It’s so accurate. You can just visualize in you head right as you are listening to the lyrics she IS the girl-someone obnoxious and so incredibly self-assured and haughty. Confident she deserves everything in her sight.
Savage video album needs a dvd release so badly! It would be great to have extras like the alternate version of this video with different footage in it. Also would love to see behind the scenes / making of featurettes, Annie and Dave giving comentary. Beethoven is one of their greatest songs and videos and Savage is one damn fine album!
AGREED!
Savage is a great album, this song is wonderful.
paintedbird nothing to add, just say, bravo. Straight to the point.
Annie plays more characters on Savage than Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove.
Savage - hands down the best Eurythmics album.
Amazing song, rudely underrated, true predecessor of techno of 1990's.
Even the video reminds me on video of 1993 techno tune Halcycon....Domestic woman kind of hallucinating in the kitchen...
This is the beast Eurythmics song ever!
This is the best music video of all time.
One of the deepest ones, for sure. The video that's worth a MILLION words.
I met Annie in cafe on sunset boulevard next to my house , she was with her husband I came to her table and said thank you for this album and told her that is my favorite and the best ever she did . She thank me and was a little surprised that I like it so much . Also thank her for diva after ... I told her that savage” helped me to liberate my alter ego like in that video ))
Thats my girl! Stylish, amazing, wonderful, STUNNING!!!! YOU GO ANNIE!!!!
One of the Best albums they ever created, chocked full of Fairlight and Synclavier programming. Just wonderful
Fairlight, too? I thought it was just the Synclavier on this album.
@@brianbrazill5821 he hasn't a clue. Made it up to sound clever...and failed.
this should be on radio again....song for today!
Annie Lennox is a drag superstar
still epic, both video and song. Also very impressive psychological depiction of narcissism, both its causes and result. Have never seen it otherwise, very accurate and I knew someone who fit the video character's psych profile. His house even looked the same.
Id...ego...and superego...all wrapped up into one. Brilliant.
Great comment
seriously, i love her.
Annie would have been a great actress if that was her passion and not music. every video she is stunning
New remake of 1984 perhaps...
Right up there with Madonna.
Lady Gaga could even learn something from Annie.
Annie Lennox did try her hand in acting in the 1985 film Revolution with Al Pacino. Her scene was small but good.
I concur. She looks like the actress Justine Lord. Look her up. Specially in an Edgar Lustgarten episode of The Scales Of Justice. "Payment In Kind" (1966) She IS Annie Lennox, I'm sure!!!!
@@orlandodiaz6224 and in The Room. Definitely not good
this is delicously strange. Love it
Me too!
Kick arse track of the highest order . Many of dance floors I stomped around on to this track !!!!!
Annie Lennox, quanta beleza, quanta criatividade, quanto talento. Com certeza, muito bem sucedida na vida e na carreira. Dentre os muitos sucessos do Eurythmics, gosto demais dessa música!
This is a genius song that was the start of a genius album.
This is fabulous
Masterpiece.
seriously a work of art.
Welcome 2024! 🎉 ❤
2020 and this is still such an ICONIC track!!! Thank you for uploading to 4k just perfection!!
one of the best videos in history
Amazing eyes! 👀 I love The Eurythmics!
I Have Always Loved The Eurythmics...For over 25 yrs...Which makes me Ancient..but She is One of my Favorite Artists.😘
A great innovative song from the superb Savage album. Powerful production best heard on a good hi-fi. Their catalogue is unimpeachable. Each album is superb and each is different.
Not the best Eurythmics song, but definitely the best Eurythmics video.
God, she's a great actress.
Eurythmics always made such incredible videos 💙💙
She is such a good actress in that Annie Lennox is not acting!
One of the best from Eurythmics for me !!!!
So ahead of its time and so underrated. Incredible song and video.
I literally cannot stop watching this video - gets more fascinating and disturbing each time!
gets better the more you listen...now im addicted to this
I didnt like this song till one day I was drunk and listened to it... lol I loved it! Now I'm addicted to it (the song)
Best Eurythmics Video
1987 was a monster year for music. Def Leppard put out an album that sounded bigger than anything else. U2 became a highbrow rock act. Public Enemy and Eric B. and Rakim broke through. House / Acid House broke through. And pop music continued its run of being surprisingly creative and subversive. 1987 gave the world Pet Shop Boys and made me a New Order fan for life (yeah, I was late). This might be the best pop single of 1987. So brilliant. Amazing we can see this in full film quality 35 years later and appreciate that wacky mid-century set. I think Savage is Eurythmics best album. So well written and produced. David A. Stewart was at his peak as producer from Be Yourself Tonight to We Too Are One. Eurythmics gave us their first 8 albums in just 9 years. An impressive output.
Utterly sublime ! 👍❤🥰
Top tune from the Eurythmics!🙂
Just a thank you really, Annie. And Dave.
the ending is epic !
In a time when the limits were being tested and broken, Annie not only kept within the limits but made them insanely enjoyable and hypnotic. She didnt need shock or sex to make her music work. It wasnt until her video Love is a Stranger when I realized how attractive she was.
I am and always will be an 80s kid :)
IMAO, this is a masterpiece.
This will always be my absolute favourite Eurythmics song! It's one of those precious hidden gems I love to pull out and admire from time to time.
This feels so fresh for a record that is 32 years old!
She is still a goddess
This video should win a world prize for a "Short Film".
Annie should be acknowledged as a great actor.
Then there is the music.
TAKE A GIRL, LIKE THAT
Still fresh . The Sound of the Eurythmics.
By December 1987, when Eurythmics released their seventh album "Savage" (if you include "1984", which I do), America had turned the other cheek. Nothing from "Savage" made a dent in the charts, MTV had forsaken them, and yet the duo released their best work anyway. I was 15, a freshman in high school, and "Savage" was the perfect album--12 songs, not one filler track. I would have gone to see them if they had toured, but they didn't. Thankfully, I got to see them at Red Rocks in August 1984, and again at Red Rocks in August 1986. That would be it. I'd never get a chance again as they'd break up in 1989, and the reunion tickets in 1999 for "Peace" were outrageous in Los Angeles. "Savage" should have had multiple hits, not just "Beethoven (I Love to Listen To)", but also "I Need a Man", "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart", "I've Got a Lover (Back in Japan)", "Shame", "Brand New Day", "I Need You", and "Heaven". They did what they did best on "Savage" and went back to their electronic roots one last time. "We Too Are One" and "Peace" would find them exploring other types of sounds.
The character at the end is the same in the video "I need a man" this was one of my favorite bands of the 80s along with Adam and the Ants. Loved theatrics and the great lyrics.
I remember watching this on the telly when I was about 5 and being really disturbed and not understanding why she was behaving that way. To stumble on it decades later and finally get it is fascinating. Brilliant!
So powerful. Love you, Annie!
Truly one of the worlds most talented females ever and extremely beautiful too.
Best 80's Video Clip Quality on CZcams. It's amazing.
I didn't know this video even existed until I got a VHS collection of their videos. It immediately became one of my favorites.
Can't believe in a couple of years time this will be 30 years old.
yup
it's been 30 years nowww
Beethoven (I Love to Listen To)" is a song by the British pop music duo Eurythmics, released in October 1987 as the first single (in the UK) from their seventh album, Savage soon to be 32 years
And we will be 50!
