Lyrics
Well I was born an original sinner
I was borne from original sin
And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin
My mother told me good, my mother told me strong
She said, be true to yourself and you can't go wrong
But there's just one thing that you must understand
You can fool with your brother
But don't mess with a missionary man
Don't mess with a missionary man
Don't mess with a missionary man
Don't mess with a missionary man
Oh, the missionary man, he's got God on his side
He's got the saints and apostles backing up from behind
Black eyed looks from those Bible books
He's a man with a mission, got a serious mind
There was a woman in the jungle and a monkey on a tree
The missionary man, he was following me
He said, stop what you're doing, get down upon your knees
I've a message for you that you better believe
Well I was born an original sinner
I was borne from original sin
And if I had a dollar bill for all the things I've done
There'd be a mountain of money
Don't mess with a missionary man
Missionary man
Missionary man
Missionary man
Don't mess with a missionary man
Missionary man - Hudba
1986, this track spread like wild fire while I was serving my Mormon mission in Ventura, California. We were not allowed to listen to music for two years, but we managed to listen to this one. 🤘🔊🔊🍻
Not enough recognition for the background singer, who added that extra bit of soul,
that really put an already good song over the top!!!!
Her name is Joniece Jamison
This song really has it all. It's faultless.
I was noticing that voice myself❤
@@tikneshiabeauford7289 When I first heard this, I thought it was Tina Turner
Annie Lennox has one of the best voices in music.
Dave Stewart is just a musical genius
With out a doubt
Yes. And Yes.
Good writers also !
My Sunday school teacher and my mum taught me the 10 commandments and said don't be a sinner. Stay good. Do not sell your body or soul. I never did 😃🤣
Why are they no longer creating songs anyone know ?
The back up singers style is my fav part of this video!
Joniece Jameson’s backing vocals are amazing!
Absolutely
I Agree, wholeheartedly!! And she's a Very Pretty lady as well!!😉
Not only was Annie an amazing vocalist she sure was a gorgeous woman as well. She always looked like a supermodel!
Good Lord, this woman can sing.
Yes … both of them good old rockets! One of my favorites.
So true..
That is pure soul coming
from her voice.
Not many singers have it.
But she really does.😐👍👍
better then most she would give madonna a run for her money lol
Good Lord, you're right. I love this tune!
Yeth. Yeth she can. ❤ 🤍 💙 🧡
Best of MTV back in the day. This band doesn't get enough props. Annie and Dave created some real Musical MAGIC.
IKR? Back in the days when a hit song could have a harmonica. No longer allowed. But yeah: They were absolute fire and this song represents for me their most searing sh-t.
Little rare fact: this song won a Grammy for best Rock performance Duo or Group. 🏆 🐵 🌳 💰 ⛪
Deserved it too. Glad to know the Grammy's got one right in rock music.
@@joehaas6129 that’s awesome. I guess Grammys get it right sometimes ! 🤙
Deservedly
Well come on, who coulda done better?
@@swisscheeseplease97 and then there's that weird Millie Vanilli deal.
Don't Forget Backup Singer Joneice Jamison,
He Powerful Backing Vocals Added So Much To This Great Video.
Grace and Peace,
Ralph In CT
Yeah her backing vocals were freaking awesome.
Joniece Jamison adds some seriously kick-ass background vocals to this song. Love Annie, Dave, the guy on harmonica & all the other musicians on this song!! 🎶🎸🥁🎧🎤🔥🔥
Yes!!! ...including Blondie's drummer Clem Burke.
Glad u added the girl no one mentions...i think shes the Kick -Ass of it all...those drums bouncing..the harmonica...Annie at her best...this is BLISS BLAST....soo glad theres others out there like yourself that didn't miss out on these masterpieces that seemed to slip through the overkill..
@@blueforest2927 Hello Blue Forest,
Yes! Her Vocals Added So Much To This Song!!
It Would Not Be The Same Without Her!!
I am 62 And First Saw This Song On A Video Jukebox In 1990 And Was Blown Away By It, And By The Powerful Vocals Of Joneice Jameson!!!
Grace And Peace ,
Ralph In CT
Chucho Merchán on Bass guitar!
ah thank you so much. her vocals add so much to this track, been loving them since this came out!
So many great songs from this band, but this one's absolutely my favorite. One of the best videos from that time period too.
This and broken glass for me
Definitely feel the same! And even though I don't rate music on it's attached video (and this song needs no video), that video has got to be one of my 5 'top-of-the-list' videos, for sure!
Totally agree, loved this song from the 1st time I ever heard it. Rocking to it in Toronto Canada Dec 2023!
Mine too !!!
The back up singer has some great pipes...!
•Annie Lennox - vocals
•David A. Stewart - guitar
•Patrick Seymour - keyboards
•Clem Burke - drums
•Jimmy "Z" Zavala - harmonica
•Jannick Top - bass guitar
•Joniece Jamison - backing vocals
•Michael Kamen - orchestra arrangement, conducting
kkkk
Thanks for sharing this info 😀
Clem Burke, as in, from
Blondie?!
@@chrisstarkey7845That’s what I was wondering too.
I didn’t realise Eurythmics sang this song, I’m here because of Ghost’s cover. Love the song!!
One of the coolest songs of the 80s. Timeless sound.
"If I had a dollar bill for everything I've done, there'd be a mountain of money piled up to my chin." I love Annie Lennox.
hay bro how is your day?
I'm more concerned about the lyrics
" ..you CAN FOOL WITH YOUR BROTHER, but don't mess with a missionary man .."
like, "fool with your brother" ??
Thats sounds so inestuous ...
88feji that’s just your dirty mind
Absolutely one of my favorite lines ever
Love how truthful it is. I would probably have a pile of money bigger than that, but I'm glad to see songs like this are still allowed on CZcams. With all the crap attempted music out there and all that.
One of the best Eurythmics songs ever !! Long live the 80's !!
Kenneth Myers , YA DAMN RIGHT!
...and back up to the 70's...hope ur still out there appreciating " good music"...! !
Eurythmics pumped out so much good stuff…. No one-hit wonders…. just pure talent.
37 years old and still sounds like I just hear it yesterday at 25!
It's timeless!
👉 *I was addicted to this song when it came out!!!!*
I remember being a teenager and glued to MTV and
watching this video... my Dad thought there was something
seriously wrong with me!! *_LOL!_*
I forgot how powerful and ahead of its time this music video is. The effects, Annie, Dave and the band truly delivered one of the best productions I have ever seen.
it was right on time
I forgot the powerful message - and yes the music, the videos. Truly powerful. Now that I reflect on all of Eurythmics, most songs have such strong message. Granted, I was a little boy when these came out but I can't forgive myself on not understanding the power of Eurythmics till later on in my life.
Powerful? Lmao okay
The harmonica solo is the most epic part of the whole song. So full of New Orleans soul and rock. Annie Lennox has such a pure voice which goes perfect with rock songs.
that is Jimmy Zavala on harmonica.......Played with etta james
The harmonica really makes the song pop song w/ Lennox of course
Only thing better is.. oh hell not better just besterest ish
METALLIC era.. lol DOT DOT DOT
And justice for all...

@@goldnutter412 22-30?
really gives me these Suicide Blonde vibes
Hands down best Lady rocker ever👍😎🍻
Agreed.
This track knocks it out of the park. Hell yeah!!! And Jimmy on the harp is off the hook. Hell yeah!!!!! Joniece on backup, a master stroke. Hell yeah!!!!! Better watch out when Annie's about, boys. What a GREAT band and GREAT track. My fave of theirs.
Annie lennox is mind-blowing!
Agreeeeeeed 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Damn right! Love her.
Damn right!
Agreed by me too, guys & gals! Question: what was the overall message/theme of this music video visual effects?
I got the opening fine with the apple and Annie being formed by it. The rest I am confused about.
@@wwcwcp09 was she brainwashed by him? Zealots are infectious.
I forgot how powerful the music and vocals were in this song. Annie was simply striking in this video. Some good stuff came out of that decade. Thanks for the post!
She looks like she was made with a computer and built in a factory ..for lack of a better term she is perfect !
yup i agree, such an incredible song
Her eyes JUMP off the screen-- ❤️
@@KennToomey Hello Kenn,
I Watched This Video Last Night For The 1ST Time In Many Years.
I Made This Observation,
At The 3:30 Mark, As The Camera Films Annie In Her Black Leather Outfit From The Bottom To The Top,
Left Leg Shaking In Time To The Drum Best, Only 1 Thing Comes To Mind,
Annie Is, The FEMALE ROCK N ROLL ANIMAL!!.
Grace and Peace,
Ralph In CT
Annie was at the height of her power here. So beautiful. So hot. (And I’m gay!). That skin tight leather outfit is killing me...
STILL - in 2023 - I LOVE THIS COMPOSITION - my all time favorite Eurythmics cuts. It stands the test of time. Vocal arrangement is sublime (Lead and Background). Lyrics are fantastic. Music is fresh and enjoyable. Just a stellar nugget for the ears to dine on.
You can't beat the music from the80s...
This song sounds better than anything released in 2014. Annie Lennox is a rock goddess...

Such a kick ass song. Saw them in concert in 1990.
People freaked out with this video… brilliant work
Annie and Eurythmics forever.
Damn, I wish we still had music like this! Between Annie's powerful voice and the harmonica and the hard-driving beat.. you can't beat it!
probably, lady gaga lol, just kidding, I think gaga is somewhat copying their music....
Bo Lan If she's copying it, she's doing a piss-poor job! Give me this old stuff anytime!
Lisawrit of course gaga always doing bad job lol, check out the song called Energy by Fire Tiger, some old 70 80's tasted song
Yup. It kinda blows away today's top 40 llama manure.
Lisa Cunningham I lived between Liz Frazer and Annie Lennox a few years ago , Still Happy!! Yeah
if only all 80s music videos were remastered like this ! God, it's incredible !!! 4k.... Can't believe it
Lol 😂 I see what you mean!
if only all 80s music videos deserved it..
Annie, Dave, someone... They had the foresight to use 35mm film to record the video. If the original print is still in good shape, A.I. extrapolates the color and definition. Expensive choices, but very smart. Thank the gods.
The fabulous Annie Lennox
This is some of the best music to ever come out of the '80s.
I've loved this song since it came out.
+Jorge Rodriguez
Jimmy Zavala, apparently...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Zavala
This song kicks MAJOR ASS!
Dellani Oakes same.
you are so right. I love every thing by the Eurythmics. and they are not a punk band. they are like rock and classic music combined
This is the song for me from Eurythmics. My favorite from all their many hits. The harmonica, backing vocals and outstanding '80s production from Dave Stewart make this a rock classic.
Annie is so talented and SO HOT!. I graduated in 90. The 80's were awesome. To those who missed out I'm sorry
There is no front woman like Annie Lennox....only she can share the vocals of a song with another (very talented) woman, letting her do all the ad libs.. And still your eyes can t keep from following Annie s every move.. She has Charisma
Annie can rock a corset. Harmonica playing and background vocals pulled this song into something hard and dirty, I've always loved.
Wow, Annie Lennox body was bangin'!!!
+Dalle Smalhals What a great body and it wrapped in leather, nice...
Yasmin88 c'mon it was the 80's, that is definitely pleather
Yasmin88, you said "banging". Heh heh heh heh.
James Marcino You probably wanted to destroy her hips, didn't you?
@Dalle Smalhals that too. 1:13 swinging those leather wrapped hips
This video still stands today, fantastic. Annie Lennox was/is a fantastic force in music.
Annie Lennox is gorgeous!
Wanda Sykes got mad vocals.
This song/video is pure badassery!
Annie Lennox did not come to play with y’all - at all.
❤️👑❤️
Annie looked irresistible here
The passion in her eyes slays me every time I watch!
This song hit me like a bolt of lightning when I first heard it. Great tune, haunting lyrics and aesthetically appealing music video all at the same time. I love Annie and her talent!
I agree with ALL the comments here. I think Annie was the best and still is! She is WAY more beautiful than any other woman singer ever AND WAY more Talented than others, including Madonna! NO woman on the planet earth has EYES LIKE HER'S!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLY beautiful! Just like rivets through your soul.....
I agree! I'm a huge fan of both ladies!
Eurhythmics were one of the greatest artists of the 1980s.
@@danmseattle975 I gave away half of my vinyl collection. I was overjoyed that I still have to Be Yourself Tonight and The Beethoven remixes lol!.
So well said
I disagree cause I am in a Björk phase 🙂🙃. I hope it ends soon. I had me Annie phase back in 1994.
this goes hard
so hard
Damn straight. SO hard like my ef-GF said repeatedly as we tripped on LSD during an in-theater screening of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a film I was completely into while the only thing she was into was my lap. I'm like, "You're missing an amazing movie, Jenny" and her only response was "It's so hard" (sigh). But yeah, what you said: This goes so hard! If you're reading this, Jen, you know it's true so bwah ha ha ha ha haaa! Also, sorry 'bout my inattention that afternoon but like I said, the movie grabbed my attention fully and plus during the few times I tried LSD my libido was at, like, zero. But I digress. So hard. Yes.
That voice.. Those hips... And the blonde pixie cut yowza... Harmonica, too
She's a knockout in this video. Both in appearance and voice.
Dear.God.!! ANNIE RULES!!! The voice! The face!!!
Eurythmics One Of The Greatest Bands Of The 1980s.
They Were Extremely Productive.
They Released One Album Per Year.
The Albums Were Masterpieces Right Through.
Missionary Man Is The Fourth Single Of Their 1986 Album.
One Of Their Best.
Congratulations to Annie and Dave of Eurythmics for their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year. There are cool pictures on-line.
Also, congratulations to Eurythmics for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Nov. 2022 which is soon now. 🏆🏆😎
Edit: Ceremony is in LA on Nov. 5, 2022 to be broadcast at a later date on HBO.
Amazing cluster of musicians, including Joniece Jamison in backing vocals, Blondie's drummer Clem Burke and the harmonica man, Jimmy "Z" Zavala.
Annie Lennox's eyes are iconic
DON'T MESS WITH THE Missionary Man
ANNIE LENOX IS AND HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN EXTRAORDINARY BEAUTY....I LOVE HER!
God , music was
light years better in 80’s
My mum's favourite band. I miss her so much. New Years Day 2020 it'll be 8 years since she passed.
I thank her so much for introducing to me such good music and telling me to always be myself.
Love you mum.
🙏❤️
Hope their whole music video catalogue get the proper upscale as this awesome job here !!
God, I miss those times back then! Gaga & Madonna can't hold a candle to her kind of brilliance back then...
you are so right. not even Joplin compares but I still love Janis
I miss that decade too. The 80’s rocked. I was blessed to be a teen through the 80’s. Born in the 70’s
I bet Anne Lennox had a strong influence on one Ms. Lady Gaga.
Dale Bozzio too, don't forget her!
Gaga is a man ..jeeze...what would you dumbasses do without us boomers
@@markperry3517 So, what would it matter...or are you Boomers just bigots?
This is what was needed to pump me up this morning !!!!! It’s only 930!!!!

I loved this song back in the day and still do. The music and the lyrics are awesome
Oh, my God. She's the Borg Queen!
Resistance is futile!
Please. The Borg Queen wished she was as captivating as Annie.
Such a banger after all these years
Excellent piece of music art perfectly performed and done here by Eurythmics.... Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart amazing combination huge musical talents and incredibly creative artists made so many excellent pieces of music 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 art and this is one them.....
This awesome tune popped into my head today, so I played the video and I recalled exactly why it popped into my head. What a voice, and what a beautiful lady...
You can have Lady Gaga, I'll take Annie Lennox.
Oh yes 😊
Definitely ❤
Gaga is no slouch watching her with Tony Bennett was awesome but yes Annie is fantastic
I'm sure Lady Gaga would gladly credit Annie Lennox as an inspiration.
Bro I will take em both and Aretha!
Yes, Ghost brought me.
Ghost messed with the missionary man. She told you not to! Hail Casper.
quite the opposite, went to check ghost cover after ur comment
Darth Spidey I was just about to say that!
my dad introduced me to the 80's musik i listen to today
ghost brought a shit ton of people here, including me
Wonderful music back then
Searing, electrifying and 100% dope AF forever, from back in the day when vanilla MTV aired music videos and cool cartoons until the corporate bosses realized that music videos were uniting we the people in solidarity so they pulled the plug.
Awesome show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony last night in L.A.
This is when Music was Edgy But very Classy! We LOVE Annie Lennox!
Miss this good music
VERY HEAVY ROCK AND WE MAY HEAR THIS UP IN HEAVEN TOO.......
Eurythmics videos were always works of art in themselves and really interesting and sometimes really dark.
Lennox was hot like a volcano.
Annie was BLAZING in this video!
Here from Ghost, wanted to hear the original
Unforgettable.
what a jam! i just love this song. thanks for sharing!
Just a timeless video.
This was such a powerful song.
I Love this whole song, but that harmonica and backup vocals kill.😎😮🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
She's gorgeous!
Mindy Lafler, I like how she's in a machine!
John Shutterbug
When I was younger, I thought she was gorgeous. She just has that incredible look about her, and her music videos are definitely "Avante garde".
One of EURYTHMICS absolutely best videos!
This song is awesome. That is all I can say. Awesome.
One of the few 80s acts I haven’t seen live. I hope to one day.
BEST EIGHTIES DUO OF ALL-TIME. ANNIE LENNOX ROCKS!!!!
4k holly crap the 80's is growing i love it
That harmonica solo was sick
Annie Lennox has the VOICE, the look and the attitude of a female boss. Love U, Annie
what ever happened to music like this?...where did we got lost?
Napster & free file-sharing killed the music industry, when people stop paying, music suffers.
Replaced by crap
She is like an alien, cold and aloof and so cool and then there is Dave with his guitar, 80s icons. Her voice is mesmerising too......
One of the best music videos of all time
Annie was ( and still is ) absolutely fantastic
I don't get why they didn't play this more on the radio back when it came out. Everytime I heard a song from Eurythmics, it was always "Here Comes The Rain Again", nothing else. This song didn't get the respect it deserves.
