RIVALS: Whistler VS Blackcomb

- Steeped in history and fueled by passion, the playful rivalry between Whistler and Blackcomb has always been the driver of progression. Whether it was building the chairlift that went just a bit higher, the invention of the sniffle station, or the never-ending argument about whose terrain will open first, it’s one that will bring out the best lift line banter on the deepest days of the season.
With the guidance of the forefathers who were there from the start, the crews who epitomized a competitive dynamic, and the storytellers who were there for iconic moments along the way, watch this story of how a rivalry over 40 years old has evolved and pushed Whistler-Blackcomb to become the greatest ski resort in North America.
Along the way, that same rivalry has simultaneously pushed the skiers and riders who make up the community to be some of the most progressive on the planet, and it shows-what mountain boasts more pros that call it home than Whistler Blackcomb? Who’s got a deeper snowpack and who could possibly go bigger than us?
To be great, you need someone pushing you-and in so many ways, that’s exactly what the rivals have done for each other.

I didn't know there was another mtn right next to Blackcomb
They are really one big mountain. Both owned by Vail Resorts and connected by a gondola.
I think that was a dig at whistler lol
this is such an epic little film, nicely done
I remember that 1983 or 1984 TV add for Blackcomb @ 15:43. It wasn't their 1st TV add either; they had one from a couple year earlier too! then in '85 Blackcomb got the T. bar making it the Mile High mountain. Then in '86 Whistler got the Peak Chair, then in '87 Blackcomb opened the three quad lifts and two T bars. Great video, thanks for posting!
Whistler blackcomb will forever miss Hugh Smythe. His passion was infectious.
so so epic those whistler freeride guys throw down, met a couple of them at a party a few weeks ago
Can’t wait for this season
Such cool cinematics and old footage! Makes me miss riding here there so much
They competed to see which one would open the first. That doesn't seem to be terribly important now, since even Cypress Mountain opens earlier.
so well put together
I love both, however with what Symphony chair opened up and my experience of the visibility means Whistler just about edges it for me - but I need to put a lot more research into it 🙂
great video. This should have more views
Can't wait to come back this year. :)
This is art
My wife and I are going for NYE in a couple weeks. This video has us hyped!! Any local hacks or tips?
Can't wait to go for my 1st time !
Didnt know there was a rivalry for so long
Damn, this would have me hyped if I could afford to ski here still.
skiing is so fucking expensive
When I get older I need to live here.
Needs more snowboards.
Amazing mountains run by the crap hole vail
there is only one spanky and its on Blackcomb!
For the advanced, wanna push yourself skier, Blackcomb is the way to go. Family and more fun oriented to Whistler
As a freeride club skier, I must disagree
Whistler Blackcomb was my favorite mountain. After I got out of high school I wanted a job there so bad. No Americans I was told. I was so bummed. I ended up moving to Tahoe and working at Squaw Valley instead. Always wished I could’ve made that happen.
really?? do they try and keep it locals only?
@@xAliPoPx well, not, “locals”, but common wealth nations only. It’s not uncommon. Most countries have laws that prevent foreigners from taking jobs. That’s why there’s special rules for work visas. For example, in Brasil, you cannot have a job as a foreigner unless your hiring company can prove there’s no qualified nationals. If there isn’t, you can work, but!, you have to train a Brasilian while you work and as soon as they can do the job, you have to leave.
@@mikeuptegrove ahh good to know, thanks. Luckily I’m from the UK. Doing my instructor course there this season!
@@xAliPoPx yeah, no problem for you as a Common Wealth citizen. The Common Wealth still mad at America for rejecting the King’s tax collections, and then whooping his army’s ass and bankrupting him. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
@@mikeuptegrove But WB is owned by an American corporation…….
Rn I just be skiing what’s open 😭😭
Song at 10:50?
I was hoping they'd stick to the original build plan from 2013, but that all changed, first with that "Renaissance" indoor water park idea, then the Vail purchase shenanigans.
Let’s go WB!!
The tree skiing isn't through cedars. Most of the mountains are all Mountain Hemlock.
isn't Khyber mix of OG yellow cedar, WRC and hemlock?
Build the halfpipe!!!!!!!!
There's a spring pipe between Catskinner & the terrain park on Blackcomb. The original pipe is being used for jump training with an inflated airbag landing area. fyi...
what a marriage!!
Researching Windows rn
Blackcomb 😍
I love both mountains but I'll always love Whistler a little more. Most of my snowboarder friends prefer blackcomb, most of my skier friends prefer Whistler.
Blackcomb is better. Whistler is great, but Blackcomb is better.
Nothing beats peak chair/
#teamblackcomb
Either way, you have to deal with the crazies that live in BC
I take the Whistler side!
Which one handles Global Warming rain better?
blackcomb every day
CBC traverse beats everything
*WHISTLER IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE SUPREME*
amazing mountains but if you go on the weekend, they both suck. hour long ques for the gondi, 45 mins to get on chairs, over crowded runs and mass powder panic...a 30 cm night that gets skied out in a cpl short hours. add crazy village traffic and 3-4 hr return drives back to van and you got yourself a waste of time.... not to mention the cost
Go ski somewhere else, no one on WB will miss you ;)
@@CrushedCity don't worry I already do! :)
Whisyler is better when Creekside Gondi is open.
love everything in this film but Bob Dufort , he aggressively grabbed me in creekside line up. He would dissaprove of every side hit in this video. Glad he retired
If whistler doesnt cost arm and legs.....
no need for the virtue signaling land statement
Funny how they profile all these different skiers but then show clip after clip of Stan Rey skiing for so much of their segments 🎿
Luckily I, and everyone else who has shot with stan, has had many winters shooting with him so the B-Roll folders are very Stan Rey heavy ahahahah.
Why the woke thing at the beginning?
What is this new trend of always having commentary from people with speech impediments?
