I just started the Shadow of the Fox. Not very far in but I am liking it. I have always loved Japanese culture so I am really looking forward to being able to dig into this book.
I really like Grim Lovelies too. I agree that it was a great world and really enjoyed the magic system. I did a review of it for the first video on my channel. Looking forward to the Booksplosion discussion.
How do you read a book in one sitting/in long periods of time? I have the attention span of a fly so it's hard for me to do anything for a long time, even the things i love doing the most like reading and singing. Do you have any advice? I love your videos Kat!

I just finished Evelyn Hugo a couple of days ago and really liked it as well. While I haven't read Shadow of the Fox, you might enjoy Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright and its sequel, both heavily inspired by Japanese culture and mythology :)
What are some other good urban fantasy books? I think it is one of my favorite genres but I feel like there are so many that I do not know about

Listening to Evelyn Hugo rn on my commute to/from work and on my down times at work. I'm super into Old Hollywood (silents especially) and it's like a mashup of Elizabeth Taylor & Gloria Swanson's lives - if they were bi! 😁 I'm halfway through and I'm loving it so far, the audio is soooooo good.

I think I want to start doing more productive things like reading instead of playing on my dvd player doing zumba dancing, but I might just do both. as a bisexual irl i found the plot point about april's bisexuality in absolutely remarkable thing (im assuming you mean the thing with her agent) to be sad but VERY realistic, there is a LOT of biphobia in the world, and it made sense that if the agent wanted to market her she'd want to erase it and it would make sense that april would feel pressure to give into that, because bisexuals are CONSTANTLY pressured by people to give into either being straight or gay and not their true selves.

okay so here's my confusion over the plot point: i would totally understand april's agent asking her to pretend to be straight, but if she's trying to appeal to people on a global level, where in the world is being a lesbian more acceptable than being bi? i've definitely heard things like "it'd be easier if you were only straight or only gay" but if the agent's goal is marketing her globally, including areas where same-sex relations are illegal, why would being a lesbian be "better"? i feel like many of the people who would have a problem with her bisexuality would have the same problem with her being a lesbian (excepting of course biphobia within the LGBTQ community which definitely exists.) BUT this isn't even my main point of confusion. like, i could rationalize it the same way you did if it was JUST the convo with the agent, being pressured to CHOOSE ONE is (sadly) realistic.
what really gets me is when it's brought up again and used against her during the debate. i was so confused about where peter was getting his information? (maybe from the agent directly? but that's not clear) like, april agrees to pretend to be a lesbian, but then it's never mentioned again. soooo... how public is her sexuality? does she go fully into the lie, does she put "lesbian" in her twitter profile, does she mention it often? does she build her brand on being a lesbian? i could understand how lying and being deceptive could be used against her, but we don't see any lies/deception in action. there's zero proof she's intentionally lying.
like, people are allowed to change their labels. someone could identify as bisexual initially and then later decide that the label of lesbian suits them better, or the other way around. and that's NOT lying or being deceptive. also, plenty of bi/pan people say things like "i'm so gay" and that's not lying or being deceptive either. and then some people will see two women together and say that's a "lesbian relationship" but.... both of them might be bi?? so i do understand the angle of "i'm bi but it's easier to just say i'm gay sometimes" but what i don't get is how that can be used against someone in a GOTCHA moment like what happened in the book. it just felt so strange that he was policing her language and labels with zero proof. how did he know FOR SURE she was bisexual and intentionally lying about being a lesbian?
so yeah, it's not just the first convo with the agent that confused me, it's the whole arc of this. i feel like we needed receipts, we should've seen april actively lying and being deceptive for that to be used against her. and we should've seen proof from peter (something like "you claim you're a lesbian, but in this post from a couple months ago you said you're bi! and you've dated men!" BUT EVEN THEN. labels can change! especially for someone in their twenties who is still figuring shit out!)
ANYWAYS. sorry for the essay lmao but yeah if you have more thoughts i'd love to hear! OBVIOUSLY i've been thinking about this a lot hahah XD
@@Katytastic this is all I've been thinking! I'm a lesbian and I felt like I'm being told by the book it's easier to be globally/publicly lesbian than bi, which I found really upsetting. It's not easier either way. Thank you for saying all this!

Shadow of the Fox sounds great but I’m personally worried about how faithful and accurate the Japanese lore is in it though.... and the romance worries me too; I don’t like romance all that much in my books.
i i don't know enough about japanese lore to speak to the accuracy, but the author is of japanese descent, so it is #ownvoices! and as for romance, there's VERY LITTLE in this book! (the trilogy might progress in a more romance-heavy way, but at least for this installment, the adventure plot is definitely the focus!)
I really wanna know the plot point in the hank green novel about the main character being bi that Kat talked about... Being bi myself makes me drawn to reading books with bi protagonists but I don't really want to read it if its showing bisexuality in the wrong light, y'know?

@@Katytastic i think I got the picture from your other comment, it's really interesting and I totally get what you were saying about both being a lesbian not being easier than being straight AND Peter not having proof that she's not a lesbian. I feel like it is supposed to be some kind of commentary, but with even a quick google search of "lesbian celebrities" there's really not that many who are globally famous, however, there are quite a few bisexual women who are globally famous (most likely because they became famous before coming out as bi, or because that kind of coming out doesn't get as much attention/isn't as well known as coming out as gay). So, I don't understand why it would be preferable to pretend to be Lesbian, unless she was trying to fit into a niche (appealing to the lgbtq+ community, which being bi would already do). Also, I can think of a lot of really big influencers online who are male and gay but I feel like being female and lesbian is a tougher.
Also, if it did come out that a lesbian woman who is an influencer was actually bi, I don't think people would really care?? because they are still attracted to women, that bit wasn't a lie. There might be a bit of biphobia from some of the lgbt community but I don't think it'd be monumental. So I really can't see someone being "exposed" as being a different lgbt label being all that interesting? Like I don't see it as spilling the tea. Especially as you said there wasn't evidence
IDK this feels like there's been a bit of a misunderstanding about what it's actually like to be female and part of the lgbt community, maybe it's like a huge thing just because she lied? but yeah it doesn't feel like that much of a lie, but I guess the lesbian community would be pretty mad at someone using their label for their own gain? but I think that's pushing it a little bit because I really don't understand what she would actually have to gain by publicly identifying as gay.
I also think that if she was forcing herself to identify as being straight, then some readers would probably feel for her more and identify with her more, it would essentially be forcing her to stay in the closet. And we know that a lot of people have actually gone through that, they don't want to put their career in the public eye at stake because of homophobia. She's still hiding part of herself by pretending to be lesbian, which is bad, but I think having her pretend to be straight would be more relatable, as someone who is bi women in a relationship with a man, I am not really out as bi to a lot of my parents and friends because I can pass as straight and coming out is not necessarily something I want to deal with. But I'm still hiding part of myself and it feels good having friends and a partner that knows how I really identify. And because I can't really imagine pretending to identify and come out as gay, when I'd be both be hiding part of myself as well as coming out, that's something I can't see the logic in really.

@@emberbalmain7733 yeah exactly!!! thanks for taking the time to write this comment and share your perspective! i really think the whole plot line there just wasn't well thought out. like, maybe hank was trying to comment on biphobia/bi-erasure, but i feel he missed a lot of the nuance surrounding the situation because, well, he's not a bi woman. and yeah, if a popular female influencer who was dating a woman (like april is dating a woman in the book) was "exposed" as being bi instead of being a lesbian.... that's hardly a SCANDAL, i feel like many ppl in the lgbtq community would be like SHRUG (i know that's what my reaction would be) (actually i'd probably personally be excited, like yay another bi! one of us! lol) and again, there's no proof of anything, we never see april lie publicly that she's a lesbian, and there's not proof that SHE IS FOR SURE LYING. and april is very clever and calculating, like why couldn't she just say she's queer and dating a woman and let people ASSUME she's a lesbian without actually lying about it directly? or she could've doubled down on the lie and been like "i used to identify as bi but now i identify as a lesbian" which how could someone argue against that?? that's PERFECTLY OKAY TO DO (i mean changing labels is ok, not the intentionally lying part lol). but yeah.... just a lot of confusion and things not adding up. again, thanks for chiming in!!!
Katytastic yes i totally agree! I might give it a read just to see how it all turns out in context, and because I don't think that Hank Green has written a bi person necessary badly, but kinda just missed the mark a little bit. Which is fair because as you said, he's not a bi women, but I also feel like i'll be forever questioning why he chose to write that plot point the way he did (i already am tbh haha). Looking at other reviews of the book I haven't really seen anyone else mention it which is interesting, but I'm guessing it's mainly bi women who would be intrigued by it the most!
@@emberbalmain7733 yeah, i searched other reviews for mentions of this and didn't find anything, but i think it's like you said, it is the kind of thing that would stand out most to other bi/queer women. like, it's certainly not offensive/terrible rep, it just feels a little off, so i understand why others aren't commenting on it bc it's not a personal thing for them.
