Alright it's a new month on the channel and we finally accomplished our goal of getting up north in England. We visited Cumbria a county which is a hot tourist destination for The Lake District. Places like Windermere and Keswick are world famous. The national park is fully of mountains and lakes. But there's a side to this famous beauty spot that the average tourist will never see or know about. But on the Western side of the lakes are a collection of towns that nobody ever sees or visits unless you're from here! We visited gems such as barrow-in-Furness, Workington, Windermere and Maryport on our Cumbrian visit.

Pretty fair assessment of Bowness, from someone who lives just up the road in Windermere. You quite rightly pointed out how much of a nightmare it must be to live there, so I’ll give you a local perspective.
Weekends and holidays sees the population rise by the thousands and for a village the size of Windermere, that increase puts a real strain on everything, especially the transport links. If you can’t walk to where you want to be, it’s probably best not to bother. A 15 minute run to pick the Mrs up from work in Ambleside, can turn into 90 minutes sitting in traffic. Windermere is a terminal train station so the top of the village gets stupidly busy, but if you add poor planning of the roads around the station, there’s regularly 2-3 mile tail backs heading back towards Kendal. The roads and access to Windermere are being addressed with the new Windermere gateway project, so that’ll hopefully help people on their way down to Bowness.
It’s easy to be perceived as hostile, as a local, towards tourists but without them most locals wouldn’t have decent jobs, and as a quick aside, Cumbria(especially in the Lakes), and Cornwall have some of the lowest paid workers in England, which fucking sucks when you see the 2nd homes on the lake shore, and the super cars taking the owners to them.
We appreciate you all coming here, but if you could stop treating the place like a theme park, take your shit home with you(or dump it in Maryport), and maybe acknowledge that people do actually live here, I’ll spend less time silently cursing your existence 😉

This is the reason why the harbour in Whitehaven looks orange:
In Whitehaven, there is a train station connecting it to towns at both ends (St Bees to the south, Maryport to the north) However, as many of you may have noticed, there is no train tracks to be seen in Whitehaven. This is because the tracks are underground, in a tunnel that goes under the town. The rails in this tunnel often get rainwater in it, and therefore there is a lot of rusted things in the tunnel. And there is also a lot of rusty water in the tunnel, and the drainage system in the tunnel funnels that rusty water into the harbour. I live in Egremont, the town just over from Whitehaven, and all the locals agree that it is an eyesore, but the council are actively trying to solve the problem.

What unites many places on this video, indeed this channel, are the statues erected to remind people why the town is there. It's like, "Aww mate, you should have been here 100 years ago. It was a right laugh and everyone had money to spend." It's as if the paltry arts budget left over from paying benefits and NHS costs always goes the same way, a couple of metal blokes in miners helmets, welding goggles, or some other useful activity as a reminder how far the place has fallen.

I'm fairly sure they will rank alongside the very worst places in England.
Stafford is worth a look as well - it used to be pretty decent, but it now has a dead town centre full of broken pavements, boarded up shops, homeless people and drug addicts, and about half of its suburbs are incredibly rough. Silkmore and Highfields are particular lowlights - I should know, as I grew up on both of them! Highfields was even featured on Britain's Worst Estates on TV 👍

Whitehaven - the frontage for the old baths is listed and so although the rest of the building could come down, the frontage needs to stay and sharing walls with the old John Paul Jones pub means that the pub is likely to remain until the whole block is redeveloped. The marina water colour is fairly recent - thought to have come from water escaping from old flooded mine workings - investigation is still on going and hopefully a solution will be found fairly quickly.
BTW - Cumbria is no more - the county ceased to be April 23 - however all but Barrow in Furness and Bowness on Windermere are in the new county of Cumberland.

You've captured those towns so well, I knew nearly all of them, back in the 60's and 70's and 80's.They were troublesome shit holes then but seem even worse now. I used to drink in the pubs you highlighted but they're all closed and in disrepair now. The worst town in my view is probably Frizington though Cleator Moor comes a close second. You latched on to the sense that any outsiders aren't welcome, a bit like the "The League of Gentlemen". You've gained a new subscriber.

I love Keswick... Do Kent...Ramsgate...Dover...Margate...real dumps...and yet there is beautiful Canterbury...sure there are many turdtowns in the UK but there are also some beautiful towns and cities...however it is of course more fun to focus on the negatives...

Isolated with people who generally haven't lived anywhere else.
They vote for a councillor who has never lived anywhere else then you get a whole council who are isolated and blinkered who then fight any development.
    Welcome to Cumbria!

Hah I was fully expecting Workington, my Mother's home town and a place I've spent a lot of time over the years, to be on this list. Had no idea about the crime rate however, though I won't argue with how rough it feels. My Uncle (from here) is an alcholic so I guess the drinking culture does fit.

Don’t mind Whitehaven. Spent loads of time there because it’s one of the UK capitals for Cycling. Quite a bit of effort going into renovation. Fantastic cultural history.

I'm from Wigton but I've lived in Leicester for like 20 years, agree with most of your observations about the rough towns of Cumbria, never been to Frizington but no need to now haha. My favourite bit of Cumbria is the Eden Valley, too pricey round there though if I ever took a notion to move back to Cumbria.

I was driving from Glasgow down to Grange over Sands last January and decided to try the "scenic" route via Silloth and down the coast. After Silloth we didn't stop anywhere as all of the towns looked very depressing.
Most of Scotland is beatiuful but if you're looking to do a video here then you should visit North Lanarkshire. My choice for No. 1 would be Coatbridge. If you look at any photos of the local football team's stadium ( Albion Rovers - Cliftonhill) it sums up the whole area.

Don't know if Possilpark counts as it's part of Glasgow, but it's well worth a mention. It fulfils every negative stereotype people have about Glasgow: heroin addiction, stabbings, the works.

I went to Maryport a few years ago, parked up by the front and the car park had about 10 cars who all looked as though they were going to drive into th quay. It was pissing down and a miserable day.
