  • Alright welcome back to Turdtowns the channel which covers the good and the bad places of the Uk. Today is a video which could be seen as a bit of both. We visited the most expensive towns in The Cotswolds. This was based on data from Rightmove for the last year. We also discounted anywhere with a population less than 1000. We had to draw the line somewhere! The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty in the West of the UK. It is very touristy and posh.

Blockley? Unspoiled? That cafe and shop used to be a Cotswold stone toilet block.
All around, one can see where people cashed in and put mini housing estates on their front gardens! And... oh, BOY, you should've been there in the 60s and 70s! 4 pubs. 2 banks open full time. A post office/general store plus two other large convenience stores. 2 butchers, a hardware store, toy/sweet shop with newsagent and a chemist... a couple of cobblers, 2 independent greengrocers and a couple of bakeries.
Furthermore, two hairdressers and a barber!
    The place was alive!
These days, it's a fossilised themepark filled with god knows who doing who knows what but only at the weekends.
Such a lack of facilities that on that score, it's qualify as a TurdTown.

Interesting to look at the financial history of most houses currently for sale in the Cotswolds. Whatever you bought in the late 90's for 200K will sell for close to 1M today.
There's a house for sale in Blockley on one of the mini housing estates you refer to, with a common garden, swimming pool and tennis court (1K per month for maintenance?). I can't escape the feeling the whole village is sh*g hotel for the rich, just like you suggest.
And let's not forget barn conversions. Plaster your pig stable, fit a few windows, kitchen and bathroom, and call it a medieval house.

Live on the Gloucestershire/Warwick shire border so know all these towns except Tetbury very well as most are in the North Cotswolds.
    Few observations
Stow-On-The-Wold - has huge traffic issues and is an absolute nightmare to drive through as it has major roads criss crossing through it. Locals use back roads to avoid this, would never live there.
Moreton-In-Marsh - is actually a lovely place and more attractive than the video portrays. The market on Tuesdays is NOT worth a visit and is NOT large at all.
Blockley - is a strange place. A village of second homes mainly it lacks any community atmosphere whenever I’ve visited and leaves me cold, Ilmington a Cotswold village in Warwickshire is far prettier and charming.
Chipping Campden - Stunning town, my friend lives on the high street and The Volunteer Curry House there does delicious Indian food and the staff are great.
Broadway should not be an honourable mention but should be on your list!! It’s beautiful especially the top half of the high street, it’s much nicer than Burford, which although has a lovely high street is constantly jammed up with traffic.
Bourton On The Water - Sorry just too many tourists make it a place I could never live.

So glad my Cotswolds town didn't make the mix, good old Chippy (Chipping Norton) - yep, that famed town of "The Chipping Norton Set", except nobody rich actually lives _in_ the town, they all live in the countryside around it.
A little Labour town in a sea of Tory blue, down to earth, a little bit grubby around the edges, but as real as it gets.
Still a working town ... just about.
Sadly, time is taking its toll on the town - it's becoming more gentrified, slowly but surely.
Still not posh - god help us if it does become that - but it looks like it may go that way.
Once the cheapest of towns in the Cotswolds to buy a house, right on the very edge - but lots of development is starting to ruin it.
    Such is life.
