  • I've spoken to many people about how far distance we should have between our fruit trees and have many answers. I put the information to the test and can tell you the best distance to place and what not to do.
    If you have a yard and you are growing fruit trees I'd love to come and film, especially if you are in the South Florida area. You can contact me at paul@rawlife.com please include the area you are in.

    I didn’t realize how much they grow in one year😅. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • @IncredibleEdibleLandscapes

    Spot on Paul. 16 ft is the absolute bare minimum for mango trees and still requires lots of pruning. And if doing multiple rows, the space between rows needs to be wider, 20-25 ft. It is important to know the growth rate of the variety before planting as well. Other fruit trees (besides mangos) can allow more flexibility but still important to have enough space to get between them

    Hey genius I had an epiphany in the last 2 weeks that I’ll share with you. Think like this. All the mango trees keep growing every year. Some can grow even 6 feet a year. All the trees need to be lowered if not this year then next year. If you feel like you just expressed that it’s going to be too crowded going forward and you are obviously young and healthy enough to work on your trees start thinking like this. Play musical chairs with your trees. Alternate which trees you don’t care that much about not fruiting next year and prune it straight across at 4-5 feet. OK the 2 trees adjacent to the Sweet Tart will get lots of sun and have a chance to maximally fruit and the Sweet tart in between might have a none or maybe a few on it’s side then next year you have to prune the 2 adjacent trees way down but you’ll be getting fruit from the Sweet Tart and a few fruit from the adjacent trees if you were able to leave some branches on the sides. Pruning never ends unless you are lazy or you think it’s OK to plant the trees more than 40-50 feet apart but even then they have to be lowered so you can find and pick fruit but more importantly for the tree’s health to cut down on fungus and pests. You know that game in the video arcades where you get a hammer in hand and those little animals pop up and you get points when you hit them do the same with your trees. Plan on having fruit on certain trees 1 year and none the next year. The trees will be all the more healthy growing back their wood and leaves without the fruit sucking the life out of them. All the pointing at the trees and removing is not necessary and it’s funny your first pointing was at Sweet Tart because with my crowd I decided to lower big time many of my varieties and this year unbelievably Sweet Tart is on the top of the list. Others include Pineapple Pleasure because it hardly produces and it’s hard to pick and ripen as easily as Lemon Zest. But in any decision making you ain’t king the trees tell you what must be lowered and what can stay tall but reachable and what needs to be cut back for the trees own health. And all this work will keep us human caregivers mental and physical health and keep us young and vigorous. The biggest problem if you don’t figure it out right is debris removal and patients. And you can’t even be a tree doctor if you don’t have “patients” and your patients are your trees!!!
    PS otherwise I loved the video cause there were some great tips in there for example pruning 1 side and when you spoke about how some trees help by growing ways to their own advantage like growing where there is space.

    As a homeowner, first you tried to grow a few fruit trees, then you wanted grow more trees, and then, there is no more space you can walk.

    You have some problems over at your house.lol Love your passion, I move around my yard just like you. I had 2 lemon zests! Both were blasted in the hurricane. My LZ was 18 ft tall in 6 years by 22 ft wide and not near full size. You need a 30 ft spread for that tree unless you want to continually prune when your 75 yrs old and tired of all the work. Plan in advance! I am putting in 3 more trees and spacing 27 and 28 ft apart except for the Cecilove which will be 21 ft away for I am out of room at the end of lot. Of course I am allowing a 15-20 ft spread for Ceci which should be plenty of room in case I need to use fungicides and whatever else. Rather have 5 healthy trees over 8 that are crammed in. Always good to remember, you cannot eat all the mangoes. Nobody can have and utilize more then 5 trees of fruit, even if you freeze all the fruit. Save room for the watermelon crops is what I say!

      It's about fruit production, more sun, more fruits. Leaving the mangoes to do what they will, you'll end up with fruit 20+ feet up in the sun exposed areas, difficult to pick. Trees pruned to 12 ft is perfect. Vigorous trees should be avoided unless you have acreage in my opinion.

  • @stokedonearth
    @stokedonearth Před rokem +2

    I think the moral of the story is self control😂. The high density approach is more for the standard backyard gardener when u want a few mango trees and other varieties in your yard not 20+ mangos. Just too big a species. We have two (6 years old mangos) planted 6 feet apart as a mango hedge, but as u noted open on the other sides 4 light and get great production. Any more it wouldn't work (plus we have no more space). Again these are comments 4 the average home gardener that want's variety in their standard sized urban yard.

    I'm just learning but papaya grow long with only a top smallish canopy and also only live to be about 20 years old. Hence, I'm planting papaya between the trees that grow to a wider canopy span. By the time the wider trees grow in, the papaya's life would be on the decline. I'm also growing melons on the ground under these young trees while there is still ample sun between the trees. I'd appreciate your opinion on this method.
