In the end of the movie, Roland doesn't kill the rex, but he has defeated it - shown he's the better hunter the same way he has every other animal - and it still feels hollow. The type of people who have shown complete disdain for his identity as a hunter are the only characters who have shown any real honor and integrity. They also "defeat" Roland in his main goal, stopping him from killing the T-Rex. Nick gets one over on him and maybe this is as worthy a foe as Roland will find in his life. Meanwhile, Ludlow, the man Roland worked for, just got people killed, including Ajay, Roland's only friend. A lot of people don't like Lost World. I love this scene even more now than when I was a kid. Yeah, Roland is being a badass, but there is so much more going on here than just that.
@@rchhowe I actually have to disagree with Ajay's assessment in part because it feels WAY too much like the scriptwriter trying to downplay what Roland does in the scene. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, because the writers for some reason thought a bunch of idiots with little care for human life (our protagonists) were somehow easier to root for than the mostly competent expedition led by Roland Tembo despite having the protagonists make the worst possible decisions they could at every turn.
This scene really accurately captures the personality of real life game hunters. A good friend of mine, who happens to be a hunter himself, once told me that you can only hunt an animal that you really love and respect. It's not about dominance, it's matching your strength against a worthy adversary. This scene for some reason was added in the censored version of the movie on tv. The way Roland managed to dodge was basically Ultra Instinct in a nutshell
I don't get why people don't like this scene. It's an amazing scene to add to Roland's character arc. Although the theatrical edition is still good, as Terrordome 3000 puts it, "slaps Ludlow up the side of the face with words only" but this scene really makes Roland look like not a complete bad guy, he's a character who's doing some bad things, but you can't help but love and respect the fact that he's a man of honor.
Yeah. Like, he was on the side of the bad guys, but he clearly had a good heart AND he didn't take anyone's BS. He went to the islands for his friend and for his own thrills, but as soon as he loses Anjay and Dieter and sees what else is going on, he didn't even care about getting his trophy anymore.
Punches the guy with one arm tied behind his back so hard it knocks him down along with 3 of his friends, immediately downs a scotch then punches the guy even harder. Then at the end of the movie captures a t-rex alive. If that doesn't scream "bad ass" I don't know what does.
No. His character never wants to go near dino's after losing his friend. Hes living his life away from that fiasco.i love his character, but he doesnt need to come back.
I can see how much that coincides with how tigers became an endangered species from years of hunting and poaching them all the while it is now illegal to do so today since 1972.
This scene was most definitely taken from the Fox Network broadcast that came out back in 2005. I remember it because during one of the commercial breaks, there was an announcer that said to stay tune for the trailer for War of the Worlds, which was going to be released later in the summer of that year, which I got so psyched about, since I was a fan of the original book by H.G. Wells (I read it in my school's library). But when this scene was presented, I immediately began to feel a sense of fascination with the character of Roland Tembo. I didn't know what it was when I first saw the character but I thought to myself he's kind of an awesome ass-kicker standing up for the waitress being harassed and disgustingly fondled inappropriately by the moron in the green shirt. And I also felt a sense of warmth by Roland's friend Ajay, who seemed to not have enough of screen time in the final theatrical version. But here we get a very good in-depth presentation of the friendship that he shares with Roland. The scene is very unique because you get a sense of Roland's morals and life philosophy. He is truly one of a kind of movie character. Played by one of the greats no longer with us. R.I.P Pete Postlethwaite. You did such a great job playing a complex character. He was a cool giant of a man from across the pond.
no in my opinion, Roland had a couple reasons in how those drunks were disturbing him from having a peaceful day reading and enjoying a couple drink shots and for also harassing a female waitress, u can tell how he adheres 2 his own moral especially when he later orders Sarah 2 assure none of his men tell Kelly about what had happened 2 Dieter.
From Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner: "ROLAND searched the continent, for the man who done him in. He found him in MOMBASA, in a BAR ROOM drinking gin. Roland aimed his Thompson gun, he didn't say a word. But he blew VAN OWEN's body, from there to Johannesburg ."
@KyodaiKen1979 Nedry wasn't trying to porposely kill anyone either, he just fucked up his plan. Van Owen was malicious and didn't give a shit who got fucked up.
Definitely a mistake to remove this scene - I know the runtime was pushing it already, but they could have edited this down too. As cool as it is to see Roland effortlessly beat up a smug groper, it was just a side show. In the brief interactions here between him and Ajay, we establish not only both their characters (the finished film just has Ajay appear as one of the many hunters, and its not unless you watch carefully that you realize he and Roland are close friends), but their relationship and their history. Here, Roland goes from just being any old big game hunter to one growing tired of the sport until a new quarry turns his head and gives him a new lease of life, which adds to the emotional weight of when the drive gets him his prize but at the cost of his best friend. This scene completes Roland's character arc, and without it, the film has a conclusion but limited set-up.
I know why they cut this out after thinking about it. Roland's character was very forward about wanting to hunt the Rex when arriving on Sorna. In this scene he comes across as "everything is too easy and there's nothing to challenge him" when talking to Ajay, so when Ajay died on the island and he went home defeated, his scoffing here in Kenya literally bit him in the ass as being "undefeated". It's better to leave this scene out, it shows him to be just a hunter looking for a new trophy instead of being pompous as shown here
This should have been left in, it wasn’t just a badass scene on Roland’s part but cemented that Roland and Ajay were old friends looking to return. It also feels like it mirrors the scene of Nedry and Dodgson in Costa Rica. Nedry was the straight-up greedy villain while Roland was the leader in it for the sport and actively trying to keep people alive.

I gotta imagine they didn’t know what they had with Roland. They obviously knew he was an important character, but he became such a fan favorite, more scenes with him would have been amazing.
Didn't see it anywhere below, but this scene was actually included in the TV Broadcast of the Lost World Jurassic Park. It was one of my favorite scenes! I was confused as hell when I got it on DVD later and it was in the Deleted Scenes.
I was watching this version earlier and I laughed my ass off when I saw this scene. Should've been in the original version. Who knew this English dude knew how to kick ass? Very funny scene.
They really should put this back in in future releases of this film. The only reason it was deleted is that it makes Roland Tembo look even more like the films true protagonist than the released version already does.

I like that Tembo said a dialogue from the novel originally written by Lewis Dodgson where he says that it is a worse crime to kill a tiger than to kill your parents.
If only Michael Crichton wrote another Jurassic Park book. It was only supposed to be a one and done book but he was pressured into writing a follow up. Had he been motivated to write a 3rd book, he may have been able to get Steven on board for directing another one.
This scene should've been kept in considering that it shows the introduction of both Ajay and Roland. And it also shows that Roland's got a heart despite being a big game hunter.
I still don't know why they deleted this scene, it should have been in the movie, it gave better background to Roland and established why he is even there
Tembo is such a powerhouse performance in this movie. Badass, complex, and easily one of the best characters in the entire franchise. I’d say he’s the last truly great character introduced in the Jurassic movies.
Going to say it, leaving this scene out was definitely a 'white Hollywood' call. Sure Roland has enough of a chance for us to see his character, but this scene is pretty crucial for us to even care about Ajay or his death in the least... he's a character that DIES, and they took out the only thing that makes it mean anything to Roland or the audience. Even Dieter's death means more because at least we see him being a jerk.

I certainly don't think of it as highly as I did when I was a kid. But the stuff with Roland is among the best parts of the movie, and it's a shame that so much of it seemed to get lost on the cutting room floor. The Lost World is "just" an action movie, but I love action movies, and having this level of depth and character development really can elevate a good action movie into something more.
Tembo was a great character, I loved how he was clearly smarter and more honorable than the other mercenaries and poachers InGen hired. Shame we never saw more of him.

They added this scene in a TV version I saw long ago and I've been looking for it ever since
I just saw yesterday with the scene on it
"What do I have to do to pick a fight with you? Bring your mother into it?"
- Roland Tembo
Are you kidding? I'd take you one hand tied down.
Rolland ruled, he knew he'd have to drop down to his level to pick a fight. Great scene should have been left in the movie.
@@billycausgrove9657 Roland - "challenge accepted"
@@billycausgrove9657 Oh is that so?
This scene for some reason was added in the censored version of the movie on tv. The way Roland managed to dodge was basically Ultra Instinct in a nutshell
I don't get why people don't like this scene. It's an amazing scene to add to Roland's character arc. Although the theatrical edition is still good, as Terrordome 3000 puts it, "slaps Ludlow up the side of the face with words only" but this scene really makes Roland look like not a complete bad guy, he's a character who's doing some bad things, but you can't help but love and respect the fact that he's a man of honor.
who doesnt like this scene??
@@seena96 a lot of people, apparently
I do think it goes on just a little too long, but that is my ONLY complaint
Punches the guy with one arm tied behind his back so hard it knocks him down along with 3 of his friends, immediately downs a scotch then punches the guy even harder. Then at the end of the movie captures a t-rex alive. If that doesn't scream "bad ass" I don't know what does.
One of the best deleted scenes of all time! Roland was a boss!

That phrase...
It's actually a line from the JP novel. Originally, Dodgson said it.
I can see how much that coincides with how tigers became an endangered species from years of hunting and poaching them all the while it is now illegal to do so today since 1972.
Nobody messes with Pete Postlethwaite and his killer cheek bones
I love how Roland repeatedly attacks the guys nose. It’s hilarious.
At least it would have told us he wasn't a bad guy, just like a...honorable anti-hero.
I LOVE HOW ROLAND TEMBO BEATS THE HELL OUT OF THAT GUY WITH ONE HAND TIRED TO HIS BACK IT'S SO AMAZING
R.I.P
Pete Postlethwaite.
You did such a great job playing a complex character.
He was a cool giant of a man from across the pond.

fuck sake man.
no in my opinion, Roland had a couple reasons in how those drunks were disturbing him from having a peaceful day reading and enjoying a couple drink shots and for also harassing a female waitress, u can tell how he adheres 2 his own moral especially when he later orders Sarah 2 assure none of his men tell Kelly about what had happened 2 Dieter.
I know why it was included (breaks the pacing, is out of place and adds only to two side-characters) but I'm still glad I saw it.
The uncut version was on TV? Cool!
Roland is a grade A badass.
Yes he is and he spoke some truth when he said these days it's a worse crime to shoot a tiger than it is to shoot your parents
Makes Owen Grady look like a child.
Although Roland has many redeeming qualities in the film, this just makes him that much more likeable!
From Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner:
"ROLAND searched the continent, for the man who done him in.

Roland fought that guy because he was bored as fuck.
And he fought him considering that the guy was sexually harassing that waitress.
I always remembered seeing this scene in TV airings.

Roland is awesome. Like his friend said that beat down was out boredom but I’m glad he did, that guy deserved it. It was really satisfying :)
After Roland fought the man with ease:
“I’m sorry J.R., you where saying?”
*Ajay
When Roland mentioned Ajay's name in the movie it felt somewhat out of the blue. There was no character development. This scene makes that so much meaningful now. After all these years. I don't know what to say. I am happy to see this scene but sad too that it wasn't in the movie.
I gotta imagine they didn’t know what they had with Roland. They obviously knew he was an important character, but he became such a fan favorite, more scenes with him would have been amazing.
They take fully fledged bad ass characters and you only see them in one Jurassic movie.
Partly coz they die.
Its actually better like that. They shine for awhile then disappear. Dragging them through the series kills their mystery.

I liked his original intro. It added mystery and made you wonder if he was good or bad.
I never saw him as bad. When he scolded Peter I knew he was just in it for the hunt, not for ingen. I see him as neutral.
Ladies and Gentlemen...Peter Postlewaite. RIP
I definitely saw a version premiere on TV with this scene in it
1:28 Fun fact: This is the same quote used by Lewis Dodgson in the second novel. I hope Dodgson said that in Dominion as a great easter egg.

I love Roland. Best character in the film. Great scene.
This scene is better than half the movie ,don’t understand why they left it out
If only Michael Crichton wrote another Jurassic Park book. It was only supposed to be a one and done book but he was pressured into writing a follow up. Had he been motivated to write a 3rd book, he may have been able to get Steven on board for directing another one.
This scene is so crucial to Roland's character later. It should have never been deleted.
I don’t know why Roland had to get so worked up. Everyone knows that’s how Louis C.K. is.
Why am I just now seeing this!!! Omg
Roland is such a badass ! Sad they’ve cutted out this scene. But I suppose they did so to make his first appearance during the hunt more impressive.

Tembo is such a powerhouse performance in this movie. Badass, complex, and easily one of the best characters in the entire franchise. I’d say he’s the last truly great character introduced in the Jurassic movies.
I wish this had been in the movie , Rolland came off as just a hunter to me as a kid . I’d have liked him a lot more if I’d seen this .
Hands down the best scene in the movie, and it's not even in it
Going to say it, leaving this scene out was definitely a 'white Hollywood' call.
Roland is actually really a awesome and a good man.
