I know it's not a movie, but the Castlevania series on Netflixis genuinely really good! This is coming from someone who's never played Castlevania as well
Paul W.S. Anderson was going to do a film of CASTLEVANIA. I read the script and, of course, like everything else he has done it was just another ALIENS rip-off.
I will admit.. it wasn't bad.. but.. there was SOOO much wrong in it. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but.. the way Alucard is in this, is just.. wrong, even moreso in the end of season 2,
Lawrence Luffman -- That certainly says a lot and it convinces me enough to want to watch it. One-Eye -- I'm always very suspicious about games made over popular movies exactly because of what you say here. But I watched a bit of gameplay and then read a lot of reviews about "Alien: Isolation", and it convinced me to buy the game and try it out. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised and will do another play-through some time. "Alien: Isolation" is among my favorite games. It was clearly created by people who love and respect the movie franchise. So in short, this is just to say there are exceptions. :) .
Street fighter the movie with Raul Julia he gave it his all despite the bad script and the fact that he was dying and he even refused a stunt-double may he rest in peace.
I remember watching Doom with my mother, surprisingly she loved it. I freaked out when it went first person in that glorious scene in the final act. Loved it
Does FF7: Advent Children count as a video game movie? ‘Cause I loved that one. Had it’s flaws, but the graphics, music, and everything were fantastic.
@@seancannon2193 You could then make the argument that The Resident Evil movies and Shining Hill movie were also video game movies. I think a distinction between a movie based on a game, a movie about video games, and a movie that is part of the games lore needs to be made here
Mortal Kombat had iconic music. I think the first 2 Resident Evil movies were decent. Warcraft seemed to be alright overall and pretty good looking. And honestly, Silent Hill was pretty in-line with the games in pacing and tone. Oh, and Doom. Doom was pretty fun for what it was.
The problem with the Warcraft movie was that it was made for people who played Warcraft. Someone who knew nothing going in would be confused as hell. Kinda like the original Dune movie, where the DVD comes with a guide on how to understand the movie's language.
As movies based on videogames it's the only one I can think of that actually gets the tone of the game spot on. So many others like Silent Hill just lift elements and then completely change the tone; Silent Hill games are about dread and paranoia, the movies are generic spook show action fests.
Lake Gyllenhaal was the only good part of the movie and I was massively let down when they made NO USE of the time dagger's ability to slow/stop time or feature any sand demons
PoP was alright, but it lacked the action that the games had, sure there was a few action sequences, but it should've been action packed and not fixated so much on the story that it dragged on.
Surprised that no one mentioned Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist. Technically it was a web series, but when viewed on blu-Ray it could be counted as a film. It was the best live action adaption of a video game I've seen to date. Actually gave the characters depth and development, with some fantastic fight scenes. If Jules loves the 90s Street Fighter film, he'd likely have a bliss induced stroke if he watched Assassin's Fist.

I'd say it's either Resident Evil Apocalypse or the first Silent Hill movie. Both of these captured the atmosphere and the whole "feeling" of the games the best in my opinion.
Silent Hill is definitely my favorite video game movie, no other movie has so seamlessly recreated whole sections of a game. I haven’t seen the resident evil movies but I assume they didn’t shoot many scenes from fixed camera angles.
What about Prince of Persia Sands of Time?! I think it’s better than all of these entries. It was extremely entertaining. Jake Gyllenhaal did excellent as the Prince. Also Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children was fantastic!!!!
@Keramel they dont need to, between CC and FF7 itself, you know why Sephiroth snapped, he found out that he was a test tube baby created using Jenova's DNA in a human woman, and his entire life he was used as a tool, so he sought to aid the one person in his life that never lied to him, Jenova. his actions were made in both madness and rage, he wanted revenge against everyone, especially Shinra Corp.
Tales of Vesperia first strike, its a actual good video game movie, excellent animation, great characters, a good twist, plot might be a bit simple when summarized but it is amazing and the game it acts as a prequel to is even more amazing
i know many hated it but damn i LOVE the Doom movie with The Rock and Karl Urban, fucking loved that movie, while the plot of why these ''demons/monsters'' came to be was very far fetched compared to the videogames was a bit weird. Still loved the atmosphere of the movie, dark corners, and rooms, lots of creepy silence. Also i loved how every single actor who played one of the soldiers actually received real military training for the movie, so they knew how move and behave, also the fact they used real firearms for many of the scenes that had shooting in it was also a nice twist.
The best ones really are the Overwatch shorts and Castlevania on Netflix but since they're not TECHNICALLY films (at least not feature length ones) they don't get mentioned in lists like these too often
Resident Evil, Doom (I know), Mortal Kombat because they did a good adaptation other than missing fatalities. Did I miss it or did no one say Tomb Raider?
Josh, my dad also loves Resident Evil; he loves the whole movie series. He's never played the games but got a big kick out of watching me play the original on Playstation because I am entertaining to watch when I'm playing horror games. (I have played others but the first game is the one that scared me the most and I didn't jump as much with the others I played.)
Whats funny about Street Fighter; Jean Claude Van Damme made his career in movies as a guy entering street fighting tournaments for revenge or honor or money and he gets into a movie called "street fighter" and its about a war.
I'm not sure Advent Children would count, yes it had the characters from FFVII but it was a continuation of the narrative from the game, not a movie about the game. You are right though it was epic.
Not a movie but the short clip for Paper, Please is the best out there, it beautifully brought out the player's feeling when playing the game. The whole aesthetic, acting and simple cinematography is just perfect.
Ark Survival Evolved (dont shoot yet) has epic cutscenes, and for the 30 seconds that you hear the music and flying around space and then it all ends and you just sit there until you snap back to reality and go why doesnt WC make animated movies because the cutscenes are the most refined parts of the game
I suggest making use of CZcams and finding one of those cuts of Street Fighter that only have the scenes Raul Julia's Bison is in. The whole thing is just glorious then. 11/10 So much ham.
Silent Hill movie #1, best video game movie adaptation EVER. In terms of story, world, tone and even the characters, no video game movie has ever been so faithful to it's source material while still being a damn good movie
Super Mario Brothers, just kidding. Mortal Kombat was kinda good, despite ripping off Enter the Dragon. Should’ve made an R rated version. The sequel Annihilation on the other hand, even Christopher Lambert wouldn’t come back and he did those Highlander sequels. I’m okay with the Resident Evil films, but I just couldn’t get into the game (why is my character rotating when I want her to go that way, Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem is my Resident Evil). I do like Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez and Ali Larter too.
So glad Scott said Mortal Kombat but I’m surprised nobody said Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist! I think it may have been a web series which might be why it was overlooked but I bought it on DVD and was actually impressed by how well made it was. Akuma’s backstory sprinkled on top of Ken and Ryu’s story. If you missed this one then go check it out

I like it too. I think it is too bad they actually did not make a trilogy based on the original sands of time scenario.I think this is the story that I have appreciated the most in my whole gamer life.
"Techno Syndrome" (the Mortal Kombat Theme), was not written for the movie. It is from Mortal Kombat: The Album, music inspired by the original video game.
Postal. Yes, it’s Uwe Boll. Yes, it has pretty much nothing to do with the game. But it was unashamedly offensive and campy. It was basically a live-action South Park, with everything from an inept jihadist sleeper cell, a hippie cult, and Uwe Boll legit boxing one of his critics. The only tie-in to the movie is the eventual shooting spree and just how random everything seems, and that’s why it works. It simple mindless fun.
3:33 Wrong. The MK theme was a part of Mortal Kombat:The Album, that came out during the release of the home versions of MK1. It wasn't made for the movie.
Also speaking of the Street Fighter movie the scenes where M Bison goes "But for me it was Tuesday" i love so goddamn much. Unironically, it's the best scene in the movie because i feel like it fit M Bison so well
I actually liked Resident Evil Apocalypse (2nd film). I feel like the actress for Jill Valentine was a good choice for the role, and if it wasn't for Alice (Mila Jovovich), that film would've been far better.
Yea the actress playing alice is the wife of the director or something. The aesthetics and Jill Valentine made an otherwise terrible film enjoyable despite the terrible character that is Alice.
How is "Tomb Raider" not on this list!?! It knew exactly what it was, didn't try to disguise it, didn't try to fap about with a "real" plot; it just had Angelina Jolie (sporting a bad British accent) teaming up with Daniel Craig (sporting a bad American accent), engaged in hilarious action movie hijinks. That is...perhaps the only Video Game movie I watch to have a good time rather than watch for the pure value of mockery (though, don't get me wrong, there is a LOT to mock in TR).

I've never watched a video game movie. I don't get to watch that many movies since I'm disabled and can't easily go out. But here's my take based on your video... I have to say, the few shots from the Warcraft movie that Rach mentions blew me away. It looks awesome and I'd like to watch it simply to see how well they've done all the makeup and effects etc. The movie that Ewan mentions look well done too, but I don't even know the game so I can't really give an opinion based on what he told us and the small movie clips. The Atari docu that Rich mentions sounds like it may be interesting. If I get the chance I'd like to watch it. I'm not surprised to hear that almost all video game movie adaptations are bad. After all, they are mostly made to generate income and lots of profit, they're not made out of love for that particular game, and I'm sure a lot of corners are being cut to lower the expenses as much as possible (although the Warcraft movie looks like it could be an exception - at least makeup and special effects wise). Thanks for sharing, guys. 'Tis a good theme you chose for this video.
Warcraft was good but was too aimed at established WOW lore fans. They should have started with a period that appears in game to appeal to a wider audience and then gone back and done prequels. Due to the rather sombre response it got I fear we'll never get to see what they could've done with a whole series of movies. P.S A thumbs up to the Overwatch shorts if we're counting them as movies.
warcraft, doom, street fighter and mortal kombat are probably my top 4. ive got a teenage novelisation of super mario bros as well. ive got books based on the doom games (the 90s ones. i dont have the doom 3 novels ... yet)
I prefer Resident Evil Apocalypse to the first film personally....and of course the first couple CGI animated films are the best of the bunch. I also love the Street Fighter movie and the first Mortal Kombat.... a few others I love include Dead or Alive ( I actually own that one on blu-ray :P ), the first Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the Pokemon movies ( especially Mewtwo Strikes Back, the first movie ), Street Fighter II the animated movie and Bayonetta: Bloody Fate
The first Resident Evil movie is not bad and has everything you could ask for in my opinion. The Tomb Raider movies both Jolie and Vikander are pretty good also.
Not a movie based on a video game but Scott pilgrim vs the world does a great job showing us an amazing look at what itd be like living in a video game world. Love that movie
I have two and both are from the same director: Ace Attorney and Like A Dragon (Yakuza) by Takashi Miike. Both nail their respective franchises to near perfection. They have a rather dark sense of humour, but they're both shot beautifuly and the acting is actually really damn good.
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation Why? Because it is literally the only video game movie ever made to have accurately recreated the plot of a video game. This movie IS Mortal Kombat 3.
Forward Unto Dawn the Halo 4 movie The fact they scaled the Spartan-IIs ALONE makes me love it more than any other (I have love for Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for the reasons given here but that's a different kind of affection)
I absolutely agree the first Mortal Kombat movie is awesome. The movie knows exactly what it is and it doesn't take itself seriously at all.

I hate on him for every film he's ever done, except for Postal. I loved it.
Yes! Thank you!
@@TheGuerrillaPoet I get it, for me Postal, Rampage (1st one), Seed, and Assault on Wall Street are so mind blowing to me they make up for the rest.
Detective Pikachu. I know it’s not out yet, but they’ll have to do something truly awful to ruin it at this point.
It's Street Fighter and it's ALL because of Raul Julia
warcraft, doom, street fighter and mortal kombat are probably my top 4. ive got a teenage novelisation of super mario bros as well. ive got books based on the doom games (the 90s ones. i dont have the doom 3 novels ... yet)
Mario is definitely so bad it's good.
The terrible costumes for the koopa and goomba lololol
I prefer Resident Evil Apocalypse to the first film personally....and of course the first couple CGI animated films are the best of the bunch. I also love the Street Fighter movie and the first Mortal Kombat....
a few others I love include Dead or Alive ( I actually own that one on blu-ray :P ), the first Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the Pokemon movies ( especially Mewtwo Strikes Back, the first movie ), Street Fighter II the animated movie and Bayonetta: Bloody Fate
Super mario bros movie. Idc what anyone thinks I absolutely it
It's a fun movie for what it is.
I like it, it's so horribly good! I like it a lot.
Love it!
It was terrible but in the best way. I enjoy that movie so much
Bob Hoskins makes it. What a champ.
The first Resident Evil movie is not bad and has everything you could ask for in my opinion.
The Tomb Raider movies both Jolie and Vikander are pretty good also.
Silent Hill Best video game movie everrrrrr and then is Street Fighters
Not a movie based on a video game but Scott pilgrim vs the world does a great job showing us an amazing look at what itd be like living in a video game world. Love that movie
Silent Hill is the best videogame movie, period
Exactly
I have two and both are from the same director: Ace Attorney and Like A Dragon (Yakuza) by Takashi Miike. Both nail their respective franchises to near perfection. They have a rather dark sense of humour, but they're both shot beautifuly and the acting is actually really damn good.
Tomb Raider anyone? The ones with Angelina Jolie
The new one is better but i also really liked this one too!
This should be updated, on who picks Sonic vs Mario, as they are the actually good video game movies now
Mortal kombat
It's one of those movies that so bad its amazing
I Love, Love, Love, Mortal Comabt, Warcraft, Resident Evil, and I totally forgot about Doom!!!
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
Why? Because it is literally the only video game movie ever made to have accurately recreated the plot of a video game.
This movie IS Mortal Kombat 3.
That movie was trash
Yuck😫that movie is so corny
I'm with josh. I got all the resident evil books
I think we might all agree on detective pikachu when it comes. Last pokemon game I played was pokemon xd on GameCube
Forward Unto Dawn the Halo 4 movie
The fact they scaled the Spartan-IIs ALONE makes me love it more than any other
(I have love for Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for the reasons given here but that's a different kind of affection)
