Rolex DSSD James Cameron deep blue: 3 years on the wrist

  • The Rolex James Cameron deep blue is the biggest, baddest, meanest Rolex in production bar none. Let’s talk about how this watch has paired in my collection for the past three years. And we are going to compare it to another 44 mm dive watch, the grand Seiko srpb229.

    I love my DSSD James Cameron, it just oozes strength and class, something about Rolex’s own steel that has a special sheen. I can’t deny the Omega’s technical advantages, co-axial and all that malarkey but..... they just look.....well....disposable to me, not something I would expect to keep for ever, a watch to wear for a while and then flip for something better, frankly....

    @Marc Goldberg, I have both the black and JC 126660 Deepsea. I had the previous iteration in black reference 116660. The newer iteration definately sits better on the wrist and is better balanced. Love them both, but since seeing this video, im going to have to purchase a Grand Seiko for sure. Its a really nice piece and i think the aesthetics are alot sharper than the Rollies

    I think you hit it perfectly when mentioning wrist size. I also have a 7.5" wrist with flat top...and for me the 116660 DSSD is super comfortable. I think the titanium caseback helps it sit right too. The sub's are too small for me.

    • @markrosenquist8259
      @markrosenquist8259 Před rokem

      Absolutely. Subs are way too small. The DSSD is really the only piece from Rolex that I like. I have a Sub and a Daytona that I never wear.

  • @bloodymarvelous4790
    @bloodymarvelous4790 Před 7 měsíci +1

    I love the DSSD 126600 JC, but it's too big for me.
    I did a wrist check of a DSSD 126600, a SD4000 16600, and a Submariner 124060. The Submariner is by far the most elegant watch of the three, but my heart lies with the SD4K 116600 (they didn't have one to try). I like that it looks like a Submariner but it's far more than a Submariner.
    A non-watch guy may say: That's a nice watch. A casual watch guy might say: Is that a Rolex? A Rolex guy might say: I love your Submariner. But only a Sea-Dweller guy will know it's a Sea-Dweller. It's not oversized just to set it apart.
    I also love GS, but I wish they put that power gauge on the back of the watch. The GS dive watch though, I hate with all my heart. Put that GS next to any other dive watch, and it will make the other dive watch look amazing. A 44mm dive watch with a depth rating of 200m? Really, Seiko? The proportions are just all over the place. That clasp is horrendous looking. I can't take that watch serious as a dive watch.

      Nice watch Marc,
      I used to say, I am satisfied with one Rolex, then I had a chance for another and then I thought I am finished with a Patek, and I watch Archie that have 4 Patek and never really satisfied.
      There will be always another plateau in watches. It never finished till it finished when you meet Jesus.
      But so long as you wear it and be happy , enjoy with the watch what more can you want out of this life.
      The problem is we worry too much about what other people says about what we have, this watch win over that, this is winner and that is loser. It maybe true that each watch do represent social hierarchy ; but hell with this hierarchy bullshits ; so what if I win or so what if I lose. So long as I enjoy wearing the watch, other things , whatever fuck head says doesn’t matter.
      I am as happy as when I have one Rolex in my 20s as now having severals in my mid 50s. I have only one wrist and my age is ticking, game is over soon enjoy.

    I have the same watch, and it's the smallest watch in my personal stable. My standard are my 47mm Panerais, and if you ever want to upgrade to a big watch, look no further than a Slatoust 191 ChS which measures 60mm without the canteen crown and 70mm with it. I wear mine several times a week on my 8-3/4 (220mm) wrist and when I put the Deepsea back on it feels like a little girl's watch.

    Just got a call today from my AD. They just got a James Cameron Deepsea. Had to watch this video again. Mark I enjoy all your videos. I also have a SD43 red letters MK2. Not sure I will keep both. Honestly this watch wasn't on my radar but you are right if an AD call you on SS watch you have to buy it. Besides it just solidify my relation with my AD guy. Which you think should be a keeper Mark? I think I'm selling my SD43. Anyway if you ever in south Texas send me a line. Margaritas and a mex tex meal on me buddy!

  • @CrimFerret

    And the debate continues on the Spring Drive. It's a mechanical watch in how it's powered, wound, and driven. The quartz module regulates the speed of that mechanical system. It's a hybrid, but I'd say more mechanical than quartz. Both are relatively large watches. I think the case shape of the Sea Dweller could be a lot better as far as mitigating the thickness of the watch. It could easily sit a couple mm lower on the wrist with a more curved profile. I have the wrist size to wear either, but there's a limit to how thick I want a watch to appear and the Rolex exceeds that for me. I'm not a fan of Omega's Plantet Ocean line either for the same reason.

    Owned two Deep Sea's flipped them both. It's not the weight it's the distribution of it. It's top heavy and there's not enough weight in the bracelet to keep it balanced. The Omega plopruf is just as heavy but it's much more balanced on the steel strap as it has a heavy clasp, its therefore much more comfortable.

    A 44mm watch weighing 207 grm is not suited on a 20 mm bracelet tapering down to 15 mm. Thank God Rolex understood this and that is why in the Mark II series they made it 22mm bracelet. Since you are always used to wear big watches in a chunky metal bracelet that is why Deep Sea might have suited you well but if you ask me wearing most watches with leather strap for comfort I will say that being a nice looking watch ofcourse the Deep Sea is not a everyday watch.
