When I was young, Mom and I had gone to the local Giant Grocery store to buy some groceries.
It was Christmas time. They had a stand with a variety of Christmas music on cassette tapes.
It had one in particular that featured different singers on popular songs.
I asked Mom to get it. She agreed.
As we were preparing dinner we played the tape.
When it got to O Holy Night, I heard this rich, deep, and melodious voice singing. I was mesmerized.
I asked Mom "Who is that singing?"
Mom was suitably amazed that I did not recognize that voice. She replied "Why that's Jim Nabors, Michael!"
It was my turn to be amazed! You mean "Golly?!"
Since then, I have heard, and thoroughly enjoyed listening, to Jim Nabors. What a great guy!
Love it! Thanks for sharing your memories, Michael!
@@jdsundstromit is always my pleasure!
Carol Burnett was one of those rare people that let the people around her shine and didn’t think it was all about her. That’s what made the show really great.🤷🏻♀️
Well said, Maryann!
But she is alive
Maryann Lockwood you’re right. They looked good cuz she made them look good and vice versa. Had she been a diva it would’ve showed. Plus u could tell the cast was close. The tighter the cast the longer a show will last: Jeffersons, Cheers, MASH, etc.
soulman2000 so true. Team effort just like most things in life. 💁🏻♀️
Zachery Kubish true. Just her and Vicki Lawrence left now.
He had a wonderful singing voice.
Boy oh boy...he sure did!
"OH, MY PAPA🎵TO ME HE WAS SO WONDERFUL 🎶"
And when he sang, he didn't have his natural accent. I've heard him being interviewed and that twang was apparently his own voice.
I still see him every day on the Andy Griffith show as Gomer. One of the funniest men on TV.
Without a doubt!
The Carol Burnett was also mandatory watching in our household each and every week and one additional fact; Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. was a strong influence in me Joining the Marines. I can still remember him singing "Oh My Papa".
His influence on you (and many others) is one of the reasons he was made an honorary Marine!
@@jdsundstrom I did not know that fact so Semper Fi always to the late Mr. Jim Nabors U.S.M.C., a title that will always remain with him.
I remember going to the Brickyard 400 and he would sing “ Back home in Indiana.” Great voice he had.
I went to the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and 2001 where he sang
"Back home in Indiana". He had such a beautiful voice.
I used to love it when Jim Nabors sang "Back Home in Indiana before the Indianapolis 500. It was such a huge part of the whole racing Memorial Day weekend. And MAN, did he have a voice! One for the ages, for sure....
This show was family time for us! We always gathered around the tube every Saturday night. My parents had some of Jim Nabors' albums, and now I have them. Love them both!
Thanks for sharing your memories, Nicki!
Harvey and Tim in skits was the ultimate TV! The way Tim would get Harvey to crack up was hilarious. As far as Jim Nabors, I loved him. It's rare that I shed a tear for a celebrities death, but for Jim, I did. My dad was a Master Sargent in the Marines, retiring in 1973. We all shared a love for Gomer Pyle USMC. Thanks for the memories! Carol and Jim were great together and their chemistry was spot on.
Thanks for the great comments, jillibeens57!
Boy, ohhhhhh, boy, loved that show......when Tim and Harvey would have a skit and would lose it, so would I. Jim Nabors was a great special guest star. I have a friend in Sylacauga Alabama that grew up with Jim and was part of his entire life. They were childhood buds until Jim's death in 2017. He said that Jim was the most genuine, kind and considerate friend anyone could have ever had.....well "Go-o-o-o-llee!"
Thanks for sharing, Mr Shifter!
Carol Burnett would be the greatest Aunt to ever have! Her kindness to others never ceases to amaze me. Once in a lifetime talent.
WE used to watch the Carol Burnett show every saturday night when I was a kid. It was clean, entertaining, and, most of all, funny. Back then entertainers weren't obsessed with telling their fans how they should vote. At the time I didn't get all the movie parodies because I had not seen the films. Now that I have seen many of the movies, those parodies are even funnier. And television doesn't get much funnier than Harvey Korman and Tim Conway together in a skit. They show the Carol Burnett show on metv, but it's the ones they chopped up into 30 minute segments. If you're a fan, get the dvd's so you can see the whole show the way it was meant to be seen.
Jim Nabors, from everything I've read and seen about him, was just a good, decent guy. He ruined the chances of his own variety show because he refused to fire Frank Sutton when the network demanded it. Ronnie Schell (Duke Slater) referred to Nabors as one of his best friends. The two of them became close on the Gomer Pyle show and remained that way for the rest of Jim's life. Ronnie even got married at Nabor's mansion.
Now for Gomer Pyle. I miss the days when a show could be clean and funny and not aimed at children. The whole family could watch Gomer Pyle. I miss the age when writers had to leap over the hurdle of not writing anything sexual or offensive. But they did it. People should check out old shows like Gomer Pyle, Car 54 where are you, and SGT. Bilko, not to mention Andy Griffith ( yes, even the color ones), and many more. People may like the Walking Dead, but give me some Gomer Pyle to put a little joy in my day. Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton were one of the great comedy teams of television, and it's a shame Sutton didn't live longer.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Joe!
Joe, "WE" is the perfect descriptor. The Carol Burnett show was a family event. Watching the show with mom and dad, my sister, and myself. The true humor, talent, and music were the standard for all variety shows. The pre-SNL product commercial parodies were completely original. As for Jim Nabors, his loyalty to Frank Sutton, at the expense of his own success... the siģn of a real friend. Jim, being so talented, playing the exact opposite character type - now that's acting. Oh, a legendary singing voice, too.
I got to meet Carol Burnett a few years ago at a book singing. It was such an honor
So cool!
Jim Nabors was such an amazing talent. What a gorgeous rich voice. I miss him. Losing Mr. Nabors is a tremendous loss to the world.
hi dave, love carol burnett and jim nabors, they seemed like truly good people and great comedic actors. they really did have good chemistry together and it showed. i really admired all that they did and thanks for this little tribute to him and carol. two major talents indeed! take care and stay safe, rob
Thanks Rob!
Jim Nabors was a unique and exceptional talent. The Gomer character was exceptional and I will never forget the episode where Gomer had to fight the bully. Variety shows were an amazing format and sorely missed. The Carol Burnett 'Family' series was one of the most intense examples of comedy and pathos. Carol gave Jim a spot on one of the episodes..
I really miss variety shows as well!
The Carol Burnett Show is still one of the best comedy shows ever. I was so lucky to have it on Friday nights during childhood. Carol, Vicky, all the great guest but Harvey and Tim were the guys. 40 years later those sketches are still hilarious! I'll never forget bawling when on the last episode she sang, " I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together" for the final time - I still get choked up a little. The folks on thatcshow were/are all fine people! :)
After hearing Jim talk one would never imagine what a great singing voice he had
Carol is still with us. RIP Lyle, Tim, Harvey
I used to love that show when I was a kid.
I'm from Indiana, where Jim Nabors would sing for the opening of the Indianapolis 500! He was in the parade for decades and even my son got to see him! Great memories!
I wasn't a big fan of Jim as far as his recordings, but loved his voice when he sang on the Andy Griffith show, the way bought down the deep vocals was great!
I will always love Jim as Gomer Pyle!
Love, love, love Carol Burnett and all the co-stars and guests. I wrote a paper about her in 3rd grade. Jim Nabors was so great at playing Gomer Pyle that I always felt like I was in bizarro world seeing that dapper man with the beautiful voice on the CB show.
Yep! A bizarro world is a great way to describe it, Car Key!
I remember them together. I remember Carol in Jim nabors Gomer Pyle show. They were a beautiful pair. I love them both.
....AHH YES - THE 70'S would be nothing without the Carrol Burnett Show.....So many Great memories...My mother always insisted we watch it - Im glad she did....
That show reigned supreme, on Saturday nites in my home, too. Ten pm, channel 2. I can hear father's & mother's laughter, as I type this.
Didn't Carol Burnett guest star on Gomer Pyle once or twice? 🤔
Edit: 😊 yes, she did👍
Yep, Corporal Carol returned later as a Sergeant!
And Carol's character had the hots for Gomer, if I recall correctly.
Of course I loved The Carol Burnett Show. What an amazing ensemble of talent with flawless chemistry between them; clearly one big, happy family. If there was an ego among them, it never showed.
Tim Conway could have done silent films; the things that he could do, the comedy he could achieve, with nothing more than facial expressions and body language was easily as good as anything Buster Keaton ever did...and Keton was _the_ master. Nobody -- and I mean _nobody_ -- could milk the lead-in to a joke like Conway could. Getting to the punchline was often the funniest part of his routines. Every pause was more hysterical than the previous one.
Well stated, Michael!
Thanks, Dave! I will fondly and always remember the Jim Nabors episodes of the Carol Burnett Show...they always made back to school season so much easier.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Jack!
Well Dave, once again it seems you're inside my head! I have recently started watching episodes of Gomer Pyle USMC and loving it. Nabors was brilliant! Squeaky clean and yet hilarious. He and C. B. were like two peas in a pod. Now that I'm somewhat on in years I find the show (and so many others from that era) more enjoyable than they were the first time around. Keep up the good work my friend, and may God bless you.
Glad you enjoy it, CG!
Carol Burnett was and still is an amazing entertainer and person. It is so nice to hear about genuine Hollywood friendships that stand the test of time. Jim Nabors was great in everything he did and always came across as a really nice man(Shazam!", "Golly!", "Sur-prise, sur-prise, sur-prise!", "shame, shame, shame!").As far as Lyle Wagoner my favorite role of his was when he was on the Golden Girls with Sonny Bono. MY favorite Carol Burnett was the Gone With the Wind sketch-all of these years later that skit makes me laugh until I have tears in my eyes. Once again Mr. Sundstrom-thanks for the memories!
I'm glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane, Mac!
I am so happy Dave that Decades tv is running the hour long episodes of The Carol Burnett Show dating back to 1967. I am happy they have the song and dance numbers as well with the Ernie Flatt Dancers
Saturday night was date night for my parents. When they would go out, my aunt would come over to watch me. Some of my fondest memories come from rolling around on the floor with her having tickle battles during commercials on the Carol Burnett show. Over forty years later I remember that time with a smile.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Diane!
My favorite Tim Conway line from the Carol Burnett Show, family segment, "She would have made it if she hadn't been wearing her good luck ham." 🤣
Since I usually comment, sometimes super-comment, I can offer that Jim Nabors and Barbara Eden were essentially neighbors in Hawaii. Eden used to maintain a place to live in Hawaii. While Nabors may have been a permanent resident of the State.
I loved everything about the Carol Burnett show. Vicky Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner. Harvey...Gorman or Corman...I forget his last name...I wish shows like this were still on TV
It's Corman. But I'm sure either way, Harvey would be pleased being remembered fondly for his work.
One of the things that always amazed me about Jim Nabors, is the fact that his comedy was so good and he always always kept a straight face. I was also amazed at his incredible singing voice. When I heard he'd passed away, I stood up and saluted the TV in Gomer's honor. It's hard to find people like that these days.
Nabors was irreplaceable.
I love Jim Nabors I sing his songs make feel so Great
Carol Burnett show was amazing. Tim Conway was outstanding, and I had the pleasure of meeting him during the 70’s (I was a little kid), but he was so kind and genuine. Great video. God Bless Dave.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, CP!
Thank you Dave for this awsome tribute to miss Carol burnette you are truly a great human being and I'm truly blessed to call you friend
You are very welcome, Bessie!
He was from my hometown n Sylacauga, AL. I worked for his uncle and he made our grocery store have the feel of Mayberry. Loved his talent
Thanks so much for sharing, Lisa!
I saw Carol Burnett in November 2017 when she came to put on a show in my city. What surprised me is how witty she still is in old age. Her response to audience questions was just as we saw it on her show. Jim Nabors and Harvey Korman were gay and I admire Carol Burnett dearly for embracing these men during a time when many people who would know about their sexual preference would stay clear of them. She is a true sweetheart that I adore.
If Harvey was gay , I don't think he was convinced, seeing how he had two wives and four children, not that it matters one way or the other.
One of my favorite episodes of Gomer Pyle was when him and Carol did that show together and sang a duet. That was so entertaining.
I always enjoyed both shows, in retrospect, they were a lot better than today's TV shows. I enjoyed imitating Gomer's gol-lee Sgt. Carter! Both actors were great entertainers. Every actor on both shows brought a lot of quality entertainment, that you just don't get anymore.
I love those Carol Burnett / Julie Andrews misadventures too !
They were great together. The “good stuff” for sure!
What a wonderful video about two entertainment legends. This made my day.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, MrWATM!
@@jdsundstrom And I love your voiceover pipes. Very comforting and I hope you do it professionally. If not, you should. :-)
Good video. I looked forward to The Carol Burnett Show every week, but didn’t realize Jim Nabors was always on the season premiere. Variety shows were the best. So much fun. Carol Burnett, Gary Moore, Andy Williams, The Smothers Brothers, Flip Wilson, Glen Campbell, Dean Martin, Red Skelton, did I miss any? Those shows were fun, now TV is either silly or darkly serious. Same as our world
TV has definitely changed...and not for the better!
Jim sang " Back Home in Indiana " at the Indy 500 for years. Great show and talent.
We watched the CB show every Saturday night when I was a kid. The entire cast was great and hilarious! I especially loved those "commercials." Jim Nabors could sing!. You wouldn't have known it by his speaking voice, but wow!
I totally agree!
When Carol came out wearing curtains as a wardrobe , in a episode,. Along with Tim's deviation of skits to throwing off Harveys role ,
. I miss variety shows,I hope they make a comeback.
I remember tuning in to one of the last season premieres of "The Carol Burnett Show" and before Carol brought out Jim Nabors they rolled a compilation of all of the previous seasons' introductions of Jim Nabors by Carol. The transformation of Carol and her makeup and costuming was pretty dramatic. Some of those snippets even got a chuckle from the audience as the way fashion changed over the years to the then-current time (late-1970's). Your montage @2:34 helped remind of this. Thanks for a wonderful and tastefully done video once again, Dave.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, Ronald!
Growing up I looked forward to it each week because the kids at our house were allowed to stay up late year round to watch it since it aired on Saturdays. And it was funny! Loved “The Family” skit where they played the board game Sorry. “One, two, three...I’m gonna slide!”
Thanks for sharing your memories, Norton!
Thanks for rekindling my memories, Dave!
Thanks for pointing me to this one. I seldom miss anything you post; but I'm embarrassed to say that I had missed this one. 🥴
Happy birthday miss Carol burnette wishing you best wishes on your special day thank you for giving us lots of laughs and smiles you truly are a special lady and friend to us all
I still ❣️this show‼️I’m sorry she lost him. RIP MR. Jim Neighbors. Thanks Dave ❣️‼️Stay Safe‼️
Yep. It was a bummer when Jim left us. Be safe, Thelma!
The cartoon janitor lady Carol was one of my halloween costumes as a kid...i obviously used the mop bucket for my loot
Thanks for sharing, Marianne!
Carol Burnett's shows had so many memorable moments. I was just a kid, but remember literally falling over on the floor laughing at the drapery gown in her Gone with the Wind spoof. Don't worry, I didn't fall off furniture, we kids sat on the floor. As for Jim Nabors, who didn't love him on Andy Griffith and later Gomer Pyle USMC? Both shows are very fun to watch rerun after rerun.
Genuine love and mutual respect. Thank you for the post.
Right back at you, Moose x2!
I absolutely loved Carol Burnet growing up!! I watched her every afternoon when I got home from school on reruns, I adored her show! I also watched her show every Saturday night (not reruns in the 70’s) Hearing this makes me love her more ♥️
A great piece Dave about Jim Nabors..I loved him in Andy Griffith...he was like Conway great playing the dim witted doofus with the heart of gold.. somehow you just couldn't get mad at Gomer no matter how much he messed things up..they were all legends ...thanks for the memories!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Charles!
PERFECT EXAMPLES OF A TRUE LADY AND A GENTLEMAN.
Yes indeed!
Watching Carol Burnett was a must in our family. Mainly because she was a crazy woman and we all wanted to be entertained by her. She had many guests on her show including Jim Nabors. I guess if they weren't as crazy as she was they weren't going to be on there. Another regular was Lucille Ball and now it was two crazy redheads. What's missing from TV viewing are the Variety Shows nothing like the good old days.
Thanks for sharing your memories, Joe!

Neither one of them ever saw the need to be vulgar to be funny.

Watching Carol Burnett now, I'm amazed at how much raunchy material they had in the shows....😂
But they did it in a way that wouldn't offend. It's weird because you're right...there was quite a bit of innuendo BUT they still managed to keep it clean.

Great video Dave. I never got to watch it when I was younger. That style of humor was not appreciated in my house. Not sure where my parents went wrong we have almost nothing in common except our faith and our love for each other.
But those two things...well, they're pretty big, coolnegative. :)
@@jdsundstrom absolutely! It's never really been a problem. A few heated debates maybe, but nothing that ever was a true negative.
Dave did you watch the HONEY MOONERS? Ralph kramden, ed Norton. Lol. Thanks for coverage Dave, Great job
I've seen a few episodes but I never watched The Honeymooners as a kid, Keith.
She knew great guests help make a great show and with her own talent it worked. She was never jealous of other peoples success and talent. Johnny Carson did the same. The opposite in my opinion was Tom Arnold. When his then wife Roseanne forced the management to give him his own show he tried to do everything. No wonder it failed.
Aw them two Carol Burnette and Jim nabors never knew that . I also must forgot about Lyle waggoner .because for years I was wondering seen him in and Wonder Woman and I watched that show too
Hey Dave! 😊 A couple of thoughts here... 'The Carol Burnett Show', and Carol herself in any roll were, as they use to say, 'Must See TV' for the younger version of myself, (I wonder what ever happened to him/me? lol) I still watch snippets of 'TCBS' right here on CZcams. It is as clean and funny now as when I was a kid! Last night, I listened to an interview with an 80 year old Jim Nabors on, 'Two Chairs No Waiting'. Jim told the story of how he was (kinda) tricked into singing, 'Back Home Again in Indiana", which he use to sing just before the running of every Indianapolis 500 race. I won't spoil it for everyone, but I will leave the link below if anyone is interested in hearing that interview. Also, there is a scene in 'Gomer Pyle USMC' where he is sitting on the stairs of America's magnificent Lincoln Memorial. In the short scene 'Gomer' is having doubts about his ability to sing in a Marine Corps singing competition, when a caretaker notices him and helps him with some sage advice. 'Gomer', of course, knocks that song right out of the park! He sang 'The Impossible Dream'. It was only one of two times I ever saw my ole Pop cry, I'll never forget that touching moment. I can see why she loved Jim so much, he was one of a kind, so talented and just a lovable guy! *Great as always, Dave!* Jim Nabors Interview: czcams.com/video/fqtFrwYAG-c/video.html And, Jim Nabors/ 'Gomer Pyle' sings 'The Impossible Dream': czcams.com/video/yJlgio-UOng/video.html

I did see the episode with Frank Gorshin the other day on Decades tv. Dave did you ever do a segment on him? He was more than just the riddler. His impressions were funny, he was in Las Vegas shows, in movies both comedies and dramas and besides Carol Burnett was on other variety shows like Ed Sullivan Show. In fact he was on the show from February 9, 1964 the night The Beatles appeared for the first time. You can also see it on Decades
I haven't done anything on Frank...yet. But I'm sure I will at some point.
@@jdsundstrom One other thing on Frank Dave. He died of cancer from excessive smoking. Adam West once said he could smoke a whole cigarette in one puff. Also he was to costar in the movie Run Silent Run Deep with Clark Gable but unfortunately he was in a car accident that had him recuperating at the time so his part went to Don Rickles
Two of my favorite people.

Hey Danny!
I enjoyed reruns of the Carol Burnett show she also did something special for Vicki Lawence she gave the part of Thelma Harper to Vicki Lawence. the part had been written for Carol but she desided to give the Role to Vicki while Carol played Eunice.
