Vikings in Italy: The Norman Kingdom of Sicily

  • The Norman Kingdom of Sicily was founded by the Normans (surprise, surprise) who were ex-vikings that had settled in northern France. You may have heard of the Norman king William the Conqueror who invaded England in 1066. The less famous Normans made it over to Italy and have a fascinating tale of their own.

They might not seem high quality, but those videos actually require a lot of time and effort, not to speak of the fact the writing of a script for such videos AND handling it so well requires more time as well. Saying they're not high quality is like saying a working hand made phone which runs as fast as any standard phone isn't high quality. The fact it might not look as good (which is very subjective anyhow) doesn't matter if the phone is working so well.

The most common name in Sicily and in Southern Italy is Russo, which comes to us via the Byzantine Greek from Rus the word for a Norseman (In French a Norman) The Byzantine language was the one spoken in Sicily when the Vikings from the West first arrived. The Varangian Rus were there 100s of years before them. The Greeks, Sicilians and Arabs called all norsemen Rus. Russo means a member of the Rus and in Scandinavian the word means He Rows or the Men who Row. It is also the only word of Scandinavian origin that the Normans left us in Italy. The Normans were busy translating everything to Latin and writing that word Russo, later Italian writers didn't recognize the word as Greek, thought it to be merely some ignorant Sicilians trying to say Red. The name Russo meant a Norman long long before it ever came to mean a Russian.

I liked that you took the time to animate and draw different backgrounds/characters/poses. Additionally, the video was very informational without being overwhelming -- your narration sounded great, you did a great job at explaining everything; at no point did I ever feel lost throughout the video. That being said, I really wasn't a fan of the small skits in between your narration (4:33). They felt really drawn out and slowed the pace down way too much. When I'm older I wanna move to Norway and I at least wanted to see if I had some Scandinavian heritage in me. The Normans were vikings and they settled in Italy. In short words, I most likely have a lot of Scandinavian heritage, which makes me happy considering that I recently switched to the ásatrú religion :)
Edit: btw, my dad has told me that there is a nearby village which takes its name from the Normans and my town was apparently founded in around the 10th century

Sicilian norman king Roger II was a cousin of William the Conqueror. Both the norman kingdom of Sicily and of England descended from the House of Hauteville. The Norman kings of England and Sicily maintained close contacts with each other throughout their reigns. They shared information, military support, and political advice. They also intermarried, further strengthening the ties between the two royal houses.
For example, Roger II's daughter, Constance, married Henry II of England in 1156. Their son, Richard the Lionheart, would later become king of England and play a key role in the Third Crusade.
The Norman kings of England and Sicily also supported each other militarily. For example, Roger II sent troops to help William the Conqueror suppress rebellions in England. In return, William the Conqueror sent ships to help Roger II defend Sicily from Arab attacks.
The close relationship between the Norman kings of England and Sicily helped to maintain Norman power in both England and southern Italy for over a century. However, the two kingdoms eventually drifted apart in the 13th century. In 1254, the Hohenstaufen dynasty took over the throne of Sicily, while the Plantagenet dynasty continued to rule England.

Normans are really mixed group, they are not really much scandivian as many think they are. There was even a big difference with the previous Frankish invasion: the Norwegian raiders generally came alone in their boats to Normandy. They found everything they were looking for in the raided countries - including women. Very few Norwegian women came to Normandy. Usually the children of the Norse warriors were born to Gallo-Romance mothers, and raised by them while the father was at war far away. It is not surprising that they mostly spoke Romance.

Today, it is in north-west Sicily, around Trapani, Palermo and Agrigento where Norman Y-DNA is the most common, with 8% to 20% of the lineages belonging to haplogroup I1. Ancient and medieval Greek genetic paternal legacy is estimated at 37% in Sicily, and Arab-Berber (Ifriqiya) between 0% and 7,5%. So the greeks are the largest not the Normans. Also the scandivian DNA in the Normans (or viking) is not really that much common as many people think, Normans are more French then Scandivian. In fact, the invading Normans were a minority compared to the native Romance population - just as the Franks had been four and a half centuries earlier. Their fate would be overrun by the natives.
There was even a big difference with the previous Frankish invasion: the Norwegian raiders generally came alone in their boats. They found everything they were looking for in the raided countries - including women. Very few Norwegian women came to Normandy. Usually the children of the Norse warriors were born to Gallo-Romance mothers, and raised by them while the father was at war far away. It is not surprising that they mostly spoke Romance. Even in the Rollonid dynasty, knowledge of Norse died out within a few generations, and by 1066 it was forgotten.
Nevertheless, the Normans left many traces in the local French dialect, and many Norman place names are typically Norse, or Norse-Romance hybrid: Noms et mots d'origine viking en Normandie. scandinave, nordique, noroise (in French).
Also remember that William the Conqueror's invading army was not purely aristocratic. Although the knights were probably of Norse descent, the foot soldiers probably were not

@@ek5891the Normans were not French being the Vikings (Norse) settled in France of the North the so-called Normandy ed being in contact with the French it was normal that they too started to speak French but above all the future generations, the Celts are another people and francs too and see what's there much difference between Gauls (Franks) Bretons and Celts (Anglo-Saxons) and the Scandinavian population (Norse) but if you tell me they spoke French and otherwise Norse and obviously I agree with you but they are not French. However, the Blood dominant (origin) of Sicilian is half Latin and half Viking(Norman)The Vikings were already present in Sicily in 850 AD. and always before like mercenaries hired by Byzantines to remove the DOMINION ARABICNorman name () given to populations who, in the High Middle Ages, they inhabited northern Europe (Swedes, Norwegians, Danes), notes also as Vikings, a term that in reality refers more correctly to the oldest phase (7th-9th sec.)Normans, or "men of North", was the term with which the populations of northern Europe they called the Vikings, that is, the raiders who left with their ships from Norway, from Denmark or from Sweden, to plunder the coasts of Europe. There is therefore no difference between the Viking and Norman terms.I'm Sicilian, I have studied and informed myself before speak and intervene, I have no Arab features neither me nor my parents, we are very light skinned etc.. mine too ancestors and not just us, many too Sicilians they are, there is the famous one legend that the Vikings were there Mostly blond and blue eyed "WRONG" Many Vikings, therefore, they had brown hair, not j hair as blonde as one typically imagines. THE various Norse groups, moreover, were very more isolated from each other than they are thought previously. Just search on reliable sources and find out about us Mysterious Sicilians

Given the content of the video, it should be renamed NORMANS IN sicily. Not vikings. Also i got sth to add. The franks / french managed to fend off viking attacks in Paris back in 886. So Rollo accepted the deal to settle down in Normandy. Plus, William the Conqueror imposed french on england after his conquest. Facts are facts

Normans, or "men of the North", was the term used by the populations of northern Europe to call the Vikings, i.e. the marauders who set off with their ships from Norway, Denmark or Denmark, to plunder the coasts of Europe. There is therefore no difference between the Viking and Norman terms

@@gwynbleidd1080 i think this is an oversimplified interpretation of the terms ‘normans’. Yes originally it means population from the north. But the ‘Normans’ we’re using nowadays are those who have settled in Northwest France since 886 when the vikings couldn’t capture Paris and became assimilated with the Frankish / French.

@@gwynbleidd1080 the differences are actually quite obvious between vikings and normans.
      1. Vikings still believe in nordic mythology, but normans become christians.
      2. vikings fight mainly on foot while normans fight on horsebacks
      3. Vikings don’t speak French but Normans speak French / a dialect of French
