Finally, someone besides me uses a blanket on top of the food pack. Any neoprene blanket, like a yoga mat or a piece of rubber floor runner from Home Depot works great. It's the right width, cut in the length you need and it's spongy but a bit thicker. Makes a good separating layer but any rubber/neoprene will do.
But the big tip I have for those needing to really protect their cooler from the heat and humidity, such as we have here in Georgia, is to visit your home improvement store and pick up an insulating blanket for a water heater and a roll of aluminum tape like used for heat and air ducts, cut top and side panels to match your cooler shape, tape the top and side seams together with the aluminium tape and... PRESTO. You have a fitted, insulating cover to protect your cooler's exterior, whenever not being frequently opened. Leave one side untapped for a little easier handling, if you like.
A cover keeps the moist air and direct sun from syncing out the cold. My ice lasts way longer. A great benefit for not many dollars and when you store your cooler between trips, just tuck the thermal cover inside for the next time.
If I'm going on a longer trip and/or its really hot and I need to seriously pre-cool the chest, I'll use a couple pounds of dry ice to pre-chill the cooler. The -0° temps produced by the dry ice maximizes the coolers potential and there's no melt off to worry about as it evaporates instead of melting. 😀

Cool idea. I have one that virtually assures that I’ll have a cooler full of ice. I don’t camp in summer. Sweaty sleeping ain’t fun. If you need a Gatorade when you wake up, it’s too warm. Frost on the sleeping bag? Just right!

I'm down with that. I'm originally from Canada (have dual citizenship with US) and spent ten years in the Rockies.
I hate trying to camp when moving = miserable.
The group I camp with has year round gatherings so, if I wanna play, it includes warm weather jaunts. I just make sure I sleep in the dsy, camp in the shade and have a cooler full of ice. :) Not much happening till the sun starts to fade, anyway.
Summer in Georgia isn't fun. Fortunately, it's only one trip or so out of 6 that sees real heat.

Great advice for the cover. I’m also in Georgia and leave my cooler in the back of the truck. The heat kills the ice. Definitely going to try that.

Simple and very practical video. I'm impressed! But I agree that adding frozen bottles to the top layer is also needed.
Camping tip: If you want your stuff to stay cold after several days you must fill the cooler completely with ice. If you like your beer at 45 degrees just pull it out of the cooler 10 minutes before you open it. That said... any beer that starts out at 45 degrees will be 55 - 65 degrees before you finish it. The rule of 50 degree beer is from the days of drinking in a pub that stored their stock in a cellar and didn't have central heat. I think we are beyond that now.
we freeze big two litre bottles of water, and make sure there in the freezer for few days. Tho his cooler looks alot better quality than the ones we have
@@karl787 ... have you noticed that water bottles ae usually round? I use the rectangular bottles (milk jugs) and clean them first. Less air space and more ice! BTW, you can also cover the cooler with your jackets during the day to keep the sun off.

If its warm, we'll sometimes use the damp towel trick, basically cover the box with a towel that you keep damp to do some evaporative cooling..
Oh and... for frozen stuff, put the freezer on super cool before you transfer the contents.....
Good tips. I also lay a sheet or 2 of reflectix (the shiny bubble reflective insulation) inside on the bottom before I put any items inside. Helps with conduction heat loss from warm surface cooler is sitting on. I also place another reflectix sheet on top of items vs the blanket in the video. The reflectix is easy to wash off so any food or liquid is easily cleaned. I also place a white sheet or blanket over the outside of the cooler to help with convective (wind) heat loss and the white color absorbs less heat from the sun. Use these techniques in my ORCA 75, Otterbox 65, & 2 Otterbox 25 coolers and it seems to extend cool temp times.

@twinturbo5212 the reflectix has a layer of air trapped inside, that's what gives it such great insulative properties. I don't think tin foil would give the same results.

Ok , Hercules... I want to see you lift & swing that full cooler up into your vehicle ! lol. When I formerly tent camped, I’d have saved up , cleaned, & froze milk & juice waxed paperred containers w/ water. The bigger blocks fit better being square, and last longer than bottles, but yes...are a LOT heavier. I located & packed the cooler in its dedicated space... i.e. not moved about. A rubber tube attached onto drain spigot, once on site allows draining the depleted replenishment ice bags every few days to a not used area.
I use reflectix insulation in between. just shake off water if it gets wet and it keeps cold in since it's double foil bubble wrap.
What about those 12 volt coolers, are they any good?
also you could use a smaller one, as you would not need the room for frozen bottles of water, ice packs or bags of ice
And as far as draining the truck battery, most people have a smaller generator anyway, maybe a solar panel

One and 2 gallon jugs filled with salty water lasts WAY longer than bags of ice and keeps meat much colder, as salty water needs to get to a lower temperature to freeze so the salty ice is colder than fresh water ice. I have a big cooler with the layered insulation but it uses up bags of ice within 2 days. With jugs of salt water(look for the flat sided 2 gallon jugs for better packing), my cooler stayed cold for nearly 5 days in 90 degree+ temperatures.

if you are drinking good beer then 45 to 50 degrees is not warm that is perfect, shitty beer has to be super cold in order to not taste like total sshole. the best alcoholic beverages can be consumed at room temperature (good red wine and very good beer) or even warm in the case of some really good whisky's.you probably drink bud light and are calling that beer. if I had to drink a bud light then yes I would want it almost frozen so I didn't have to taste how terrible it was.I would rather just drink water and get hydrated than to waste my time drinking highly carbonated horrible tasting bud light or similar.

The only reason I can think of to put the beer on top is because that's what you're accessing the most. Still want ice on it though.
Two problems with high end keep it cold forever coolers is that they now have these really thick side walls that reduce capacity big time. I Don't know about you guys but I can't get block ice anymore by so I just make my own freezing water in pitchers and sliding the ice from those into the cooler. I'm also a big fans of frozen drinking water bottles but they just don't seem to make the cooler as chill as it should be. In a hot day partially melted drinking water is "cool". I know I can access dry ice but I've never tried that.
I just put acouple ice packs on the bottom and one large on each side then pack like u did and add sum ice on top. And don't put warm drinks or anything cuz the ice will melt faster. Gotta try the cloth thing

You forgot #8, which is to pack a small efficient cooler with just ice to put in your regular cooler when the ice gives out there.
I do this, I was starting to think I was the only one! I own one yeti cooler 35 qt and literally ONLY use it as an ice reservoir. my other coolers are still good quality, not crazy expensive yeti quality but since I am opening them frequently it doesnt make a huge amount of difference to be honest, the ice will be melted in a few days no matter what but with the yeti staying closed for three solid days it barely melts at all, allows me to refill the other coolers end of day three and keep them good another couple days. 5 days is the absolute max I ever need to keep coolers cold and that's about twice a year so this system works great for me.
Right, I stumbled upon this trick when I just insisted on buying a roto cooler (75qrt)and had a smaller one to sit inside.

Hey, you're extremely knowledgeable about coolers that are way beyond my question. I own a Coleman 60 quart wheeler cooler. I work out of town for anywhere from 2-5 days a week, and would like to bring food with me. I'll be staying in a hotel room. Could you tell me how many days prepared fish and chicken will stay good in this cooler, and would you recommend the water bottle ice that you demonstrated, or is there something on the market I could buy, since I'll be doing it 50 weeks a year, I don't mind spending a buck. Thank you for any help you can provide.
If you're on the road that much you absolutely want to go with an electric cooler. They're not cheap, but I think you'll realize the value almost immediately. Expect to spend $300-$800, depending on which brand you go with. Make sure it can run on DC and AC, so you can keep it cold both in the car and in the hotel room. Some of the best made ones on the market are by Dometic, but they're expensive. The compressors are insanely efficient and they're very quiet. A CFX28 would run you about $800. Coleman and Igloo have a few options that are DC/AC as well, and they'll be cheaper. Good luck and safe travels!

If you are drinking main stream beer I agree. Beer manufactures even promote this by doing things like Coors Light and push you to chill it more. This dulls the flavour and helps when less than prime ingredients are used.
Breweries that focus on higher end ingredients and products will generally suggest drinking it at a higher temperature as it, like the guy in the video said, bring out all the unique and subtle flavours.

@@lastshadow7821 Nope. I drink pop/soda as cold as possible. I agree with you not an IPA guy. It sounds like you are drinking mainstream lagers like Budweiser or Heineken. When available I drink darker beer, Amber ale or Guinness.

With the top layer, finish filling yer cooler with frozen water bottles, leaving as little air space as possible. I also agree that even if your meat is hermetically sealed, put it near the top of your pacing, but beneath the insulation layer, less chance of contamination of the entire cooler.
Or....you can just put your meat in a separate plastic bag with ice bottles in it.
Pre-chill a large 150qt cooler by packing it with frozen water in old plastic juice bottles. Start 24 hours before you will load the cooler. Then get some dry ice. Put a layer of cardboard in the bottom of the cooler, then cover with a bag of ice, then place the dry ice on the ice, then cover with another bag ice and another layer of cardboard. Keep these first two layers of ice in their bag. Add your frozen food, or meats and other prepared foods in tupperware containers on top and sides of the ice/dryice stack. Then top off with more frozen bottles of water. Add another bag of ice if you have room. Keep your soda, beer and other cold liquids in a separate cooler. I have had a cooler with dry ice last 10 days fishing in the Bahamas as long as the cooler stayed in the cabin or on deck under a blanket.

IPA is never refreshing at any temperature. I put my Lagers on the bottom so they are good and cold. And keep my meat in a separate cooler with dry ice so as not to spoil it with moisture, but yes always pre chill the chest it makes a huge difference.
Amen. I don’t care what anyone else drinks but IPAs suck. They are mainly for folks who like conspicuous beer consumption. 50 degree beer isn’t cold. It’s “crap my ice in the cooler melted, I don’t have any more water, I’ll choke down this beer “temperature. I just threw up in my mouth thinking about ipa’s.

Max ... I have one of those 12 volt electric coolers and it's fine on a road trip but will kill your battery if left on overnight.
I usually line the very bottom with aluminum foil, shiny side up.

Anything vinyl, rubber , ect. I use a rubber mat that was made for cats to clean their paws off on when they get out of their litter box. If you have nothing else on hand a dollar store piece of foam board will suffice but is not as desirable as the other products.
id never put meat at the bottom of a cooler of ice but if you are using ice packs like this guy then sure that's the best place it will be coldest. I find the best possible coldness situation is medium quality cooler with a combination of ice packs and actual ice cubes. I dont know the science behind it but the ice stays frozen WAY longer when there are even just a few ice packs mixed in,particularly the really cold type like yeti or engal -20 degrees or whatever it is. really expensive coolers dont offer much in my opinion because we are opening that shit all the damnd time and letting air in, you are better off with just a medium priced cooler (roto molded ,yes but jut get a yeti ripoff rather than the real deal, I really love my grizzly brand cooler and it was half the price) if you want to own a yeti use it only to hold ice and never open it until its time to replenish your other cooler(s) that's what I do with mine ,it is an ice reservoir for longer outings, most of us aren't out for more than a day or two anyway though so you could literally just buy the cheapest Walmart cooler throw a couple bags of ice in and your good for two days. who the fuck has 5 days at a time they will be gone and unable to buy more ice? not me, not to often anyway. and in cases where I am out longer I plan to consume stuff that needs to be real cold sooner OR I dont bring shit that has to be really cold in the first place.

Tip:You should put your cooler in the complete shade on the ground because heat rises.If you transport your cooler in your car or truck don't put it in the trunk because that's the hottest place in a vehicle. You should put your cooler on the seat beside you or behind you on the floor of your vehicle to keep it cool in the air-conditioning or even if you just keep all the windows open when you drive and you get a strong breeze inside your vehicle. Also you should know that eggs and bread are non perishable food that do not need to be refrigerated. The same goes for all foods containing a lot of vinegar, cured meats and vegetable oils (include canola oil and olive oil) beans,chick peas and lentils.Only certain foods need to be refrigerated like potato salad and an6 other food item contains mayonaise.Whole milk,butter and margarine need to be refrigerated but I don't eat cows milk or butter (or full fat ice cream) because those foods are too high in Saturated fat and cause heart attacks.The same goes for cheese.
I hope you’ve re evaluated your thoughts on saturated fats. All of that was sold to us by the sugar and other industries. Important and vital ti get enough healthy fat into your diet

Jason ...keep the cold water in the cooler and it will provide thermal mass. Also, more water = less air space. IOW, stays cold longer. Any soggy food can be prevented by double zip-loc bags and at least attempting to keep those higher than the water level. (by keeping drunks and stoners out of your cooler)
And put your cooler into a sleeping bag! Especially if it’s a 0° bag. You will have ice no matter how hot it is outside.!

Why would you put ketchup and mustard in the cooler? They don't need to be refrigerated. Leave Them out, and save that space for ice.

A man drinks the beer that he enjoys the most with his friends while hanging out. Whatever you like most. Based on "Steve Thomas wisdom" (I'd love to hear your take on sour beers, haha) I must be a pretty big douche, but I'm one that likes a variety of beer, and doesn't care what other people want to drink. If they want to understand how the heck I can like we IPA, I'll tell them. If they really don't care, I get to enjoy more of my beer while I can can grab one of theirs for them while by the cooler.

Dry ice is good for either freezing food (for a very long trip) or keeping a cooler full of ice (for other coolers) from melting at all. It's far too cold for beer.
I respectfully disagree. I have used it many times. Just don't set the beer on the ice.
I've often wondered how to make that work. I must have used too much dry ice, because in a decent cooler even if the beer isn't touching it the temperature will still easily drop below zero. Maybe I should try it again with less dry ice.
If your beer is freezing, you’re neglecting your beer consumption. Speed up.
We have never froze our beers. Cold air falls warm air rises. We have racks that we put the DI on. If the DI touches the beer then they are done. Just pack it right and you won’t have any problems. I have been doing this for about 20 years.
