  • It is early in the morning as Vidal gets himself ready. But before Vidal can brace himself for his dangerous way to school he must take care of his family`s sustenance - like every morning he checks the fishing nets. After work it`s time for a Uro bread and he drinks a Mate tea. Both things, like almost everything else here are made form the totora reeds. The Uros are a people that are very rooting in their tradition. They have even managed to preserve the Pukina, their mother language dating back to the colonial time.
After two hours of paddling, Vidal reaches the center of the village. He floats past houses, where a family is building their new island since the old one has began to rot. It is the normal rhythm here. Every three years a new ground under the feet and a new roof above the head needs to be made. The construction begins by cutting the roots of the totora reeds in 30 cm long blocks. Five hundred of these are then tied together with ropes and soaked in the water for three months until they melt into one large block. On top of this block, the family piles totora reeds up to two meters high, until a part of the block sinks in the water and starts to rot. The gases released from this biomass under water produce a buoyant force that causes the new island to swim.
After three hours of paddling, Vidal has finally reached the Uro elementary school where he learns to read and write. Here besides his native language, he also learns Spanish. It is not the language of his parents, but at the same time it is his chance of a future outside of his village.

Of all the documentaries I've watched, the documentary from Bolivia hits me the most. The 2 sisters who had to walk almost 4 hrs a day just to go to school and had to pass through the jungle. Upon arriving home, they will still have to help their mother who's a single mom to the 3 of them. Tears were falling from my eyes watching that documentary. It is heartbreaking seeing children suffer because of poverty.

I'm very much addicted to this series, I've watched few of them, and it makes me humble myself as well as recall my childhood days, where I and my friends also walk 3-4 kilometres to reach school.
It's one of the best things that happened to me.
It made me mentally stronger and when you walk with friends, you don't feel tired at all.
Along the way, my male friends would climb a coconut or a guava tree as a treat for us when we get hungry.
I am saving these videos because now I have a son, and I wanted him to see how lucky he is that his school is 500 meters away from home only.
I hope that the government of Peru help this tribes, lifeboats, meals, free school supplies, uniforms, more schools and better safe transportation.
Thank you for this video. It's good to see how these kids help other kids.
It reminds me that it's not always late to help other people and that kindness still exist❤

At home we could work till darkness forces us to sleep. My first job abroad was baby sitting dropping and picking kids 3 blocks away from the house. They could fight over tv n i always got sclolded when they refused to eat or when they watched tv. I spent a whole 6 months wanting to vomit from what i was witnessing. Kids throwing themselves on the floor in shopping malls for toys. I was under a scolarship n made frends coz my classmates never beleaved u cld see wild animals without paying lots of dolars. I told them to pay tickets n come help in the farm. We have a big farm house. I told them to carry as many shoes as they cld coz while growing up shoes are a luxury. 8 yrs since our travel n till now they tell me what a good time they had. My 2 kids are 4 n i take them back to the farm to appreciate that life is not easy. I even volunteered in a school 4 6 months so that they cld learn my local language. Those kids are super adaptive

They’re so cute all of them 🥺 really shows you the limits kids can actually go to, and makes you appreciate what you have.

There is another ancient tribe in Iraq that lives in a huge marsh off of reeds and builds everything from the reeds like this. It's crazy how similar and so far away from each other.

The children are so intelligent because they have time to think. No video games and tv to distract them. All I can say is wow!
