- This second generation Citroen C4 is overlooked by many buyers making it a used bargain. If you are looking for something that is comfortable, easy to live with and cheap to run then you may want to take one for a test drive. Just don't expect it to raise your pulse in the corners. Best driven sedately.
This car is fitted with the EGS automatic gearbox and the very popular 1.6 litre DV6 diesel engine which is used by many manufacturers such as Peugeot, Ford, Volvo, BMW, Mazda and more.

I'm surpirsed that Citroen, after the c3, which was renowned for catching fire, named their next car the c4 .
😂 I didn't know the C3 had a problem but yes, naming your next car after explosives is brave.
Never heard about the c3 catching fire.
You know what caused it? The c3 was pretty standard using the same engines and such from other PSA models.
Oh my goodness 😂😂😂 The mat Watson bit was hilarious!!
I love these reviews. I have no intention of buying most of the cars, I just love Richards honesty. :)
Man your reviews are so so good ! Complete and you give a really nice feel of the car to the viewer !
Just found your channel and enjoying your detailed information about the cars you tested. I had a C4 1.6 Hdi auto for 2 years and it never let me down and was as you say very comfortable and did 60 mph on a run.
The automated gearbox was not perfect but if you lifted your foot as you did it was ok and even smoother using the paddles.
I so hope that Mat will see this. :D
This video is so timely.
I just bought 2017 C4 1.6HDI in automatic😀
Can't wait to get delivered.
I hope you enjoy it.
You got the car? How you like it? :)
@@Rush2112001I took delivery and done 500km so far, very comfortable and quiet.
@@ektherising Thank you. Hope it will serve you well and give many memorable moments:)
I've been a fan of your Conquer Driving channel for some time. I knew you also had a car review channel but have only just found it and shall subscribe. I sold the Nissan Note DIG-S CVT as it was too high a spec for me. I now have a Citroen C1 Flair ETG automatic.
I have owned this car for 13 years, it has been amazingly reliable (been changing only bulbs). I am very surprised with your seating position as I am 186 cm and I still have plenty of space to move back my seat. Honestly I think there is something wrong with your seating position. I confirm that the interior quality is great (much better than my almost 45k brand new Cupra Leon Hybrid), has lasted amazingly good 13 years in the very high temperatures in Greece. The automatic gearbox is the worst I have driven ever (especially if you compare it with the brand new 7 DSG I am driving), the fact that it is not creeping means that your car has not had the latest update as Citroen updated the software sometime in 2014 I think. This car saved my live when I was driving at 150 km per hour on a very rainy day and the ESC, ESP intervened and literally saved my life. It is a car that it is not meant to be driven fast definately but i havent seen a better cruiser yet thatn this one. When I bought it I managed 1400 kilometers in one (60 lt) tank. The boot is amazing , I have managed to squeeze in there a whole sofa! Rear axle is paleolithic and very noisy in potholes but does not cause any problems at all. The chassis is amazing sturdy and I think it was the first car in the category with double gazing windows and fully robots laser wielded roof and chassis (there is no seamline on the roof). For Motorway driving it is one of the best cars you can drive for longer ranges and the economy for the 1.6 ehdi car I am driving is enormous. Very quiet car needs some time to heat up this oldie but goodie diesel engine. Amazing equipment for the time it was sold and in Greece as Citroen didnt have a good name at the time it was 30% cheaper that any other competitor and it has lasted much longer and better that any of them! If you find a well maintained one do yourself a favor and go grab one!
I really love driving.
Very useful review.
4:01 I instantly knew he was talking about Matt when he said "not throwing it in the bushes" or something along those lines 😂
I've a 13 Manual 1.6D (110). Six years of great service so far. I'm 6'3" and have no problems at all.. Odd.
Any tips for handling this car for so many years like you did, meaning what are ur technic
Ty for the video ❤️
"Oh here's some potholes! I'm gonna go into them!" 😂
It really is much smoother than I'm used to.
Great video
Great car for sure. 👍
I've owned the manual 1.6vti for roughly 5 months now, it's a nice car. Although i would say that the gears are really short on the manual. I can drive comfortably 50kph in 5th gear at like 1.5k rpm and it will hold its ground even at 25kph in 5th gear which is funny. Based on how little gear changing you can get away with you might aswell just get the manual lol
My ‘13 c4 e-HDi has done more than 360,000KMS. Still drives great
what oil do you use for servicing?
@@mkondotemwanharawa1308
I take it to a mechanic, I’m too busy to service it myself
@@dardamnit okay thanks, do you also experience that slowness in gear shifting when driving in automatic mode?
@@mkondotemwanharawa1308 Yes! It is common with this model of EGS gearbox, i have adapted my driving style to allow for a smoother drive. It is one of the flaws of this car.
How did you take care of it for it to reach 360000 km ?
I don’t know why, but I kinda like this car. My parents have same car, but specs are lower. It’s fun to drive a car
I think it's important to listen to what you like. My girlfriend likes hers, not a bad car to own as it's quite cheap to fix.
Great review. I recently bought used and I thought my 1st gear is broken because it was very slow to pull out quickly on roundabout
Try it an MB C class or E Coupe ... the same feeling and the outer edge of the front tyres show damage from having such a fantastic turning circle.
Diesel 16v HDi 110 not good, but HDi 112/115/120 with 8v is very reliable
I bought today 😄
I hope you enjoy it.
Great video as always
Quick question : What do you think of the new Peugeot 208 ?
Thank you. I haven't tried one.
The last citroen i had broke down on me on a main road due to the robot failing. Never again! I'll stick with manuals or torque convertors
For under 3k I think this is the best newish car you can buy if you aren't bothered about badge.
What's wrong with citroen badge?
@@whothis5642 well a lot of people in my country are obsessed with having a German car as a status symbol
@@George-nv1ri those people should really consider switching to 21st century and stop living in stone age
Thinking of getting one of these next but as I'm 6ft2 would you say definitely not enough room? Maybe the later model's have more legroom. Great review btw Richard 👍
I'm not happy with the driving position. If I was much taller I think I would like it less.
Yes newer models have increased legroom. I have 14plate with the seating allowing to go as far as rear passengers seats
I am 190cm and quite overweight, I think that the c4 is quite comfy, it’s more comfortable and spacious than other cars in my opinion, the auto gear box is rubbish but it gets its job done. Mine is a left hand drive, maybe it’s because of that? I don’t know…
I am 193cm tall and own a 2014 C4, very comfortable and drove to Spain from the UK with no discomfort.
I have a 1.6 auto petrol. Very comfy not so good on fuel. Crap center console shit cup holders. Very smooth very comfy to drive. I like it.
What happened to the picture quality on this video? A lot of green strips sometimes there
Spent an long time trying to figure that out. Turns out it was just a bug in the latest software update of premiere Pro. Sorted now but I didn't have time to redo this video.
Well Matt Watson makes so much better reviews 😂 he said that front space is okay but back seats a bit tight 😂 I’m 6 foot tall, went to see one yesterday and had to move the seat closer as I felt too far away from pedals and steering wheel
How the c4 going now, a year later?
Good video thanks
I still don't like it, my other half likes it though.
Matt won't be happy with that 😁
My dad has one of these, it has the same 1.6 HDI engine but it’s manual and the clutch slip is very bad
what engine oil type is suitable for the petrol 1.6 turbo? 2013 citroen c4 exclusive.
I would refer to your owners manual. You want them correct viscosity - the number with a W - and the correct ACEA.
@@RichardFanders thanks unfortunately it is in French managed to google some, how.about gear box oil, and how long does it take to change it, and what quantity should it be?
Would you ever be able to do a Ford Focus?
I may do.
How does it compare to the Peugeot 308 mk1? I have the 308 with the 2.0 hdi engine and its a perfect car for me. Now we need a second car in the family and I am thinking of getting another 308, or go with the C4 mk2(the mk2 308 is out of my price range, otherwise that would be the choice). Anyone had expirience with both the 308 mk1 and the C4 mk2?
I've not driven the 308.
308 Mk1 with 1.6 HDi is terrible. Noisy interior and feels extremely dated
Bmw f30 review please
Love the mat Watson joke😭
Is it loud in the cabin what do you reckon?
I think road noise is quite good actually.
I'm ol to buy the exact same model.. Have you driven it for quite long time.. What was your experience and do you still recommend it for beginners?
My other half has done 12,000 miles in it now. I really don't like it but she still likes it. I would much rather a Golf, Leon or A3 ect as they drive better.
The first two month is a great car than is a continue headings
As far as i am aware its a smoother gearbox than a robotic gearbox but not as smooth as a dsg
Who's Matt Watson?
He is a motoring journalist who does the car wow videos. He always throws the parcel shelf into the bushes.
Yeah, the seating position is a fail. Was looking to buy one for my sister. Maybe the MiTo and Giulietta are better buy.
Iam also considering between the C4 1.6 vti 120, or the Giulietta 1.4TB/1.6jtdm, have you come to a conclusion?
30 quid a year to tax?
Yes, same as my Leon.
Hello can i contact with you about cooperation
You're welcome to send me an email.
The new C4 looks like a coupé.
I c 4 of em micky
this car not for you as you can't seam to drive it i have had three of these gearboxes and if they start to have a bad clutch take up you need to have the gearbox reset and the clutch bit needs to be seset
E
Must say the design has not aged well, looks 20+ years old
I don't think this child is old enough to have driven and mainly test cars , why do they all want to be the Hammonds And Clarksons of this world .
If he had been given a bonus free hotel and food for weekend this would have been the best car in the world. You will not beat a Citroen for good value and without doubt the best engine ever made .just be honest why find fault .
Bad quality really bad
