In Norse mythology, Thor, Loki, and Odin are the most famous and powerful trio. Known for their legendary stories and moments, they’ve always been depicted in media as a force to be reckoned with. Leave it to Konami to make this not the case. Introduced in the 5D anime and given a hype set properly named Storm of Ragnarok, the Nordic/Aesir archetype was expected to overtake the TCG and compete with the best in the format. From weak effects to Head-scratching conditions to support not meshing well, we’ll be talking about all the reasons why the Nordics had a Viking's death in the TCG.

Making Thor a "Beast-Warrior Type" Monster in a game that QUITE LITERALLY has "Thunder" as a Monster Type is one of (if not THE) biggest missed opportunities/screw-ups in Konami's history... 🤦
And it wasn't even like monsters that were humanoid in shape didn't exist in the Thunder Type by that point.

We have cards who have the thunder type on a metaphorical sense like united resistance they could've definitely given it to Thor

The Nordic / Polar God cards were cool in the anime.
...but just like every "God" card, it gets massively nerfed when coming over to the TCG/OCG
To be fair: since 5D’s came out at the time when the card game has solid rulings, card are designed to be much closer to what the actual card game is. So the big boss monsters are all the same from the anime except their attributes and type (Divine are Egyptian Gods exclusives), what made the big boss fail was their specific tuners. Towers, literally, weren’t a thing until 2014
How many anime/manga cards are NOT nerfed in thr real world?
@@brotherhood7596 A lot, considering some were buffed to ridiculous levels and then had 0 meta relevance. Others are just 1:1s from the anime/manga.

You forgot to mention the biggest slap to the Nordics is that they released Generaider which is also norse mythologic but in a consistent archetype.
Such amazing legacy support that can't overcome the crap it started out with. Would be nice if the Aesir monsters got an Orcustrated Babel. Make their effects into quick effects.

@@Bezaliel13assault mode(or atleast the legacy support) is fine, its just that there are better choices for the exact job that they do in the form of PUNK who in their own has access to 6 above cards in easy ways with less bricks since unlike Assault mode all the cards combo into each other rather than needing specific starters and cards to not be drawn

I feel like I am supposed to elaborate Assault Modes were to address the Aesir part specifically... that was all.
So fun fact... I actually built a nordic deck after a friend of mine who was done with yugioh gave me the decently sized stack of cards he owned (like, maybe 2 or 3 decks worth)... and it included a Ghost-Rare Odin.
Nordic Valkyrie not being a Valkyrie but the Winged Dragon of Ra Spell card, Blaze Cannon being considered a Blaze Accelerator card will never make sense to me
That's decently easy to explain. Archetypes depend on the japanese names. Valkyrie isn't a Valkyrie card because the Valkyrie cards are Siegfried's Valkyries, and are pronounced in German (Valkyure), but Valkyrie is pronounced Valkyuria.
Meanwhile, Blaze Accelerator is just called Blaze Cannon in Japanese. Blaze Cannon is called God Blaze Cannon is obviously a Blaze Cannon card.

I mean, I guess because it was named before the Valkyrie archetype was printed in the TCG, but still, it could have been avoided.
Like duel log’s previous video (from a month ago), Red moon baby becoming Vampire baby was not necessary, but because the original Japanese card in the first set it came out of (and still is) is named Vampire Baby. But, who would’ve known that these “old” cards randomly getting inserted into an archetype 😂

One of the coolest archetypes because its Norse mythology but maaan the artwork for them do no justice. The valkeries look more like tiny fairies and both Thor and Loki are super underwhelming in appearance.
Nordics prove the old adage of “you can print broken card effects as long as they are attached to bad archetypes.”
The Asier are far more awesome in the anime then thier real life counterparts, especially since they were divine beasts there and have more synergy with each other.
On the same tier, and power as the Egyptian God Cards and Sacred Beasts.

Yeah it is far more automatic rather than just banish a specific card for them to revive.
Also, they were DIVINE in the anime but not when they came to the real game, this doesn't change much but it set a precedent for basically no future cards (Except the extra Ras) getting the DIVINE Attribute and left them vulnerable to the occasional targetted anti-support of their new, more mundane attributes
The Aesirs need a retrain. When Baronne de Fleur is a better level 10 than all the Aesirs, you have a problem.
To be fair, baronne is a better level 10 synchro than most level 10 synchros. But they definitely need a retrain
Nah Baronne is too much considered she release 3 years ago. A better comparision is Leo, the Keeper of the Sacred Tree
that is more of a baronne problem
When the generic Scyncho 10 is better than 3 gods who need specific tuner's to make
I'm sure it is more fair to say that Baronne is a easy-to-summon Synchro monsters with busted effects, if she requires 3+ monsters, then the comparison would be fair to the Nordics synchro monsters.

More evidence that shows us that basing an archetype specifically designed for bad anime only plot devices (especially those that are only effective DURING THE BATTLE PHASE) are destined to fail faster than hearing the anime side characters voicing out worthless expositions of what the cards do to pad out the episode(s) run…
Especially if you nerf the hyperspecific cards before printing them

Nordic needs more protection for Gullveig, lower level synchros and retrained versions of the Aesir monsters
a more appropriate effect for Odin would have been to just have straight up immunity to targeted effects and to be able to revive any Nordic monster once per turn but negate its effects since in Norse Mythology, Valhalla was Odin's personal army for Ragnarok

Given that this archetype already has a busted Link-1 and busted, searchable, Trap card and they're still ass, they'd have to give them totally new Synchros that completely ignore the old ones to make Aesir, slightly, less garbage.
Still shocked he hasn't done Ally of Justice in one of these, yet.

I actually run Laevetian and Golden Apples. One of my funniest Yu-Gi-Oh memories is using Golden Apples to copy and a 7300 atk Tragoedia, getting rid of said Tragoedia, just to lose the token to a Hammer shot 😅.
I can only imagine how many times he's twisted his tongue pronouncing those names.

Well nordic is an ok pick for a synchro deck in tengu plant format that doesnt use tengu. And they made some top. So I call them a success with how little support they have
If I remember correctly, there was a nordic beast hybrid deck that topped a YCS in 2011, I cant remember how, but I swear it did, I remember.
Edit: Just looked it up, Nordic Beast/Tengu synchro YCS Toronto top 32 October 4, 2011. It was true they had a top! Also famously the YCS where Billy Brake basically intruduced Maxx C to competitive Yugioh in his victory.
It was funny when Ottawa was mispronounced.
I like the beast side, plus the goat mates in duel links are great.
Here’s the thing about Nordics back in 2011, it actually was at least a decent rogue pick during Tengu Plant format with it getting top 32 finish at YCS Toronto.
The main strategy revolved around using Tanngnjostr’s effect which the Trap Rota Gleipnir works with since you activate this when your opponent declares an attack that would destroy your monster by battle.
Tanngnjostr was also target off of Super Nimble Mega Hamster so its effect giving you access to either Synchro 7s or Rank 3s was able to happen more consistently than people thought.
The version that topped in YCS Toronto paired the Nordics with Tengu since it’s great Synchro material, and Tour Guide since that also help to search for your Tanngnjostr.
I think with the limited information at the time, and the perception that the Nordic cards were filler, the deck was not given more of a chance back in 2011. Especially with how modern Tengu has been making new innovations, Nordics could definitely be given more attention if more players gave it a chance.
Nordic is a good deck in the making, but Konami doesn't want to make an interesting deck out of them (and if they do decide to do that it'll likely be a damn otk for the 50 thousandth time)
it's weird how often konami comes up with "god cards" and they turn out useless and way underpowered compared to everything else they release. nordic dudes could've easily had 1 super effect each like naturia synchros.
Konami prefers making their decks broken and make the ones they adapt very weak.

Honestly, at this Point, if somebody wants to play Nordic Monsters, just play Generaider, pretty much the same but better in pretty much everything other then having huge Attack.

I remember when this set first came out, i was mainly after legendary sam stuff so i showed up for the release thing but i was "lucky" to pull golden apple and people were offering almost $80 to 90 bucks for it, every one kept talking about how this set was gonna be crazy good and then like a week or two later, nothing.........good times😌😌

I like the nod to the source material with having mini Kaijus in Fenrir and Jörmungandr, and gave me the idea of a "road to Ragnarök" kind of gameplan for an alternate version of this archetype. Basically, you build up your board with Thor, Odin, etc, and your opponent's board with Kaiju-like cards for Loki, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr. Then you activate a card(s) representing Heimdell blowing the Gjallarhorn which would activate an alternative win condition for you if any of the fated battles occur like Odin vs. Fenrir, Thor vs. Jörmungandr, and Heimdall vs. Loki. Maybe your plan goes south and you need to reset? Out comes Surtur to nuke the board with Baldr getting revived from the graveyard to restart the cycle. Throw in cards for Hel, Yggdrasill, Valhalla, maybe field spells for the nine realms, and of course Ratatoskr too. Nordic mythology is too rich to be limited to being a mediocre at best Synchro deck. It makes me wish that Konami would make a modern/good deck for the Olympians too.
Thor, the God of Thunder, who's name means "thunder"...isn't a Thunder-type. I know they wanted to make him more connected with the Nordic Beasts by making him Beast adjacent, that being Beast-Warrior...but come one dude...
if this archtype ever gets decent legacy support with better Aesirs and some more maindeck stuff with synergy it could legitimately be good, given how insane cards like Gulveigg are

Finally! Been waiting for this one forever lol. Man, Konami really screwed up this one. It had the potential to be great but ended up as a dumpsterfire instead.
The nordic deck needs like a couple more main deck monsters and complete retrains of the Aesir. Maybe just some other gods but I doubt they'd ever make other gods that like 5 people know the existence of yet the three everyone actually knows from pop culture remain unplayable. Loki should get a retrain that negates spell/traps in any phase and during either players turn + some other effect. Thor I envision as having an ultimate conductor tyranno-esque effect to be a board breaker, just kinda makes sense with the flavour at least to me + would make sense with retrains of the "summon myself for the opponent" gimmick with fenrir and jormungandr. And Odin should be either another negate or some other equally powerful but generic stuff. The two pieces of dog and snake shit fenrir and jormungandr should be like one is a bootleg kaiju, the other a double search or something but they lock you into nordic/Aesir summons.

I want to say this archetype is a simple fix but I dunno. I guess the simpliest fix is to retrain the Aesir monsters. All of the overcorrection still summons garbage monster. Even give them the condition of "This card can be summoned with any Nordic tuner but the other materials must be Nordic or Aesir monsters"
I think Odin and Thor would be fine if they just had "quick effect" tied to their main effect (loki is screwed on that tho) so if they just added a card that made them quick effects kinda like Orcust and their field spell "Orcustrated Babel" I think they would be fine, not strong but decent.
Maybe a monster that can be summoned of the link 1's effect and that searches a field spell that makes them quick effects while giving some form of protection.

What was the first deck that abused special summoning ?(in other words the deck that turned the game into solitaire)

Gow's release was prime time to print busted Nordic support and retrains . Such a missed opportunity . Side note, the fact that the Chair spell could've been a 1 card combo but the L-1 isn't a Aseir . So you just lock yourself out for nothing

Hope you cover Ancient Gears soon. They have one plan, beat-down, but they have some good support to let them do that. Biggest problems they have are lacking an good option for going first , their signature spell&trap battle negate not really mattering in the modern game, and not being able to interact with the opponents board outside of the niche backrow destruction after battle of Engineer and Reactor Dragon
I feel like if any archetype should have an instant win condition, it should be gods.
🤔 interesting deck actually, but could used something to cover the weakness especially Try to protect the Link, 🤔 and to be honest i don't know how to activate the Traps on first turn
idk about everyone else but i had fun playng the nord and aesir. thor shutsdown alot of dumb effects monsters have, odin being able to swing thru anything and loki stopping their traps in place. if you build a good deck around them you can otk. i did it yesterday, video is on my page.

This series is like the polite version of Legacy of the Worthless
Would pay good money for Nordic support in the form of Buri, Progenitor of the Aesir.
They just need to launch an entire retrain of their boss monsters, then slip in a few new supports that actually synchronize with them. But this is Konami we're talking about, so thats about as likely as a meteor made of gold landing on my left foot tomorrow.
The synchros need a retrain and they need an solemn judgment esque card

I really wish they would remake some of these archetypes for the modern era. Half of the meta archetypes have lame card art / themes and the other half cost 1K to build. Just remembered that generaider exists but all the more shows it needs help as an archetype.

I will say there is a hilarious combo you can excecute in DL with the Odin and Jörmungandr with block defence
Bring out Odin, special summon Jörmungandr to their side, play a block defence and hope it doesnt get negated, and there goes 3k life
Then crash into it with Odin after activating his effect
It’s janky, it’s only going to work once every 30 duels, but when it does, it feels great

They should have either made it one cohesive archetype, or made 3 actual archetypes that are somewhat compatible (so they could function in the TagDual format like in the Anime)

It's both hilarious and sad that Team Ragnarok's Archetypes got all the extender supports during the years just to end up with terrible _gods_ who were *never actually useful.*
Tag force adds to the insult that Halldor pretty much always prefer summoning *Brionac* (Usually Valkyrie+Token) instead of Odin regardless the board lol
Brionac over any Aesir is as poetic as Rei (GX) entire deck in the anime were so bad, borderline unplayable, they straight up give her Lightsworn instead in Tag Force.
@@ReifinDFanchon That became kind of a tradition/meme with Tag Force - Girls who barely dueled in the source material or had terrible archetypes getting overpowered decks. 5D's TF had Mina using all sorts of weird stuff like *Dogma Blade, Chaos Lightsworn and Planet Agents* :/

It's a shame this Archetype didn't work out. Could've been really awesome to have various archetypes based on different mythologies and gods, yet much like the Egyptian Gods, these guys came up quite short.

Still dont get why Konami decided to just make a better Nordic Deck in form from Generaider, which are pretty much the same Monster, just named differently, but just better in every way, even tho they let your opponent draw Cards.
It is sad how these awesome cards with a cool deck plan don't work (they were my first deck given as a gift, had valkyrie cards in it too. Quite fun)
