Vendread - Failed Cards, Archetypes, and Sometimes Mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh

  • There’s nothing more upsetting than an aesthetically pleasing-looking TCG archetype being horrendous. Vendreads is that archetype made out of failed dreams and hope. It was already a tough climb as Konami was trying to figure out how to make Ritual Monsters successful. How you make a DARK-type deck with the most Graveyard-resourceful archetype in zombies terrible is beyond human comprehension. There’s definitely more to the case; we’ll explain it in today’s video of failed cards and mechanics

I play Vendreads. They're pretty good as a Link and Synchro deck and their Ritual spells are honestly one of the best, as all of them can Ritual summon from the graveyard.
One under-appreciated feature that both Slayer and Battlelord have effects in which they can search *any* Ritual monster and *any* Ritual spell card; you can build creative decks that way.
Their main issue is you have to special summon their main deck monsters onto the field, which often costs resources from the gy. One card that I don't see played with Vendreads is Lich Lord, King of the Underworld, whose effect is not limited to a once per turn, which provides Vendreads tribute fodder. Zombie World also helps a lot (you can banish Diviner and Herald of the Arc Light).
I think the biggest issue with Vendreads is the Rituals have lackluster effects when on the field. Sure, Revendread prevents targeting and Chimera (often considered the worst of the Rituals) offers protection, but if you didn't use the Vendread main deck monsters as field tributes, you are often left without the ability to interact during your opponent's turn.
One solution is to have either a Vendread Ritual Monster *or* Vendread Continuous Spell that allows you to banish your opponent's zombie monsters from their graveyard instead of your own. This will allow Vendreads to be a pseudo Bystials, and be balanced out by the fact you have to run Zombie World, which is vulnerable to removal.

I actually play these guys on a pretty religious basis, both in TCG and in MD, and honestly I think they are one of the best non-competitive deck since they don’t run out of gas easily at all unless you just get a bad start. But if you wanted to make these guys a competitive there I think all that would be needed is a MD monster that gives the effect to make the monster ritual summoned with it immune to card destruction. They already have very consistent ways to get 10k+ dmg on the field, great ritual spells, a board wipe trap, Vendread Reorigin, and a great link monster. Now they just need that little push that’ll make them at least tier 3

I would say that the last support helped vendreads a lot, being able to make an untargetable, banish 1 monster and 1 s/t executor is much easier now.
The problem is still that this deck lacks swarming, which is weird for a zombie deck, and that its kinda slow.
This is a deck that can see some really good amount of play in duel links, even without skills specific for the deck, if only konami adds the bew support.
Heck, they could even make a skill that allows the rituals to gain the monster effects from anywhere, not just the field.
Its kinda like how triamids has a deck that flows well, but then theres the trap that banishes the cards instead of shuffling them into the deck for whatever reason.

My main Deck in Master Duel is a zombie - deck that also contains some Vendread cards to support it.
I really like giving Houndhorde's effect to slayer - being able to banish one of your opponent's spell or trap cards per turn while also being protected by Revendread Origin is kinda nice.
Avendread Saviour is also quite nice. Makes it easier to get Zombie World on your Side of the field (by sending "Nekroworld Banshee" to the GY).You can also send Doom King Balerdroch to the GY for an even bigger debuff (-1600 ATK enables Saviour to beat over anything with 3000 ATK or less) and to get it on the field during the next Standby Phase (as long as there is a field spell on the field).
It might not be a good archetype on its own but some of the cards can be quite decent in generic zombie decks..
(Plus I really like the lore around them ^^).

I'm curious as to if Vendreads would have been good or even a decent rogue option if it had come out a format or two earlier. A lot of these failed archetypes probably would have been strong if they had come out earlier than they had been. For all we know, this one could have been great if it came out with the first wave of Link Monsters. The banish effect could stop early Link Climbing, and popping spells and traps would have probably been a good call to hinder the enemy if they were playing something like Mirror Force to deal with Links.
It's just a shame that Vendreads have such an uphill battle going for them. It's appropriate, given the story of the archetype, but just making the main deck monsters restricted to only passing on those effects to Vendread Ritual Monsters probably would have been more than enough of a restriction to allow their effects to be passed on. Maybe this deck could be fixed with a new field spell that recurs the banished Vendreads for constant recycling, and maybe adding in some level manipulation so that they can be more effective in actually ritual summoning the cards.
But hey. At least the Vendreads are powerful in Master Duel's N/R format. That's gotta account for something.

Still using Vendread in Master Duel, and it's still good enough even before Ravenous and Scar was released.
Revendread Evolution was great, even if it pop your ritual at the end phase, the point is just to put your Slayer or Battlelord on the field, so you can link them into Savior and triggered their grave effect. Or even better, if you open with Diviner of Herald, you can Synchro Slayer and Diviner into Ultimaya.
Though the deck release time was terrible. Their initial release is during the era where things like Gouki U-Link, Summon Sorceress, and Firewall Loop exist, and three years later when it released the last support, the deck can only be 'Decently playable' because the game already evolved so far.

This is definitely a case of Konami being too afraid to give Vendread strong support because of the zombie toolbox. Being forced to have the material on the field to give otherwise mediocre Ritual monsters halfway decent effects really forces this archetype to jump through so many hurdles when a normal deck can do better off of 1-2 card combos.

I honestly think it has huge potential, the struggle not so much the setup as much as it is just straight up bricking or only going into beat down because you drew no ritual spells or monster cards.

Imagine a world where their field spell could tribute a monster and special summon "Vendread" monsters from the grave face down up to the combined level of the tributed monster, thus turning on their ritual effects. And if you control a "Vendread" ritual monster could shuffle "Vendread" monsters from banished into the deck up to the combined level of "Vendread" ritual monsters you control. It wouldn't suddenly make the deck beyond op, but it could make the deck so much more useable

Vendread is also one of the first Archetypes to use Pre-Preparation of Rituals outside of it's intended purpose.
Pre-Preparation's intended effect is to search both a Ritual Monster and it's specific Ritual Spell, meaning it would support old Rituals (as these had Ritual Spells that only worked on 1 monster) while newer Rituals with their more generic Spells would need something else.
But Vendread was designed to ignore this, since all their ritual spells are generic for Vendreads, but 2 of them also have an extra effect that specifically lists a Vendread Monster.
Origin with an effect that only protects Revendread Slayer, and Ravenous with an effect that _Excludes_ Vendread Scavenger!
It's a very creative way to go about it, and I've found it amusing for years.

The main issue with this archetype is that the materials need to be on the field to give the extra effects. Sure Mezuki, Book of Life, etc facilitate that a bit but it’s still super clunky. They need to either errata the cards or make retrains that grant the effects when they’re used as material regardless of where they are. They should also make a card similar to Nouvelles “At Table” so they can recycle monsters and ritual spells from banishment (ha ha! New keyword!)

@@xelius2683Piercing and excavate are 2 of the few keywords/official terms we have. Prior to PSCT, prercing was used once with the Duelist Pack: Zane reprint of Cyberdark Horn. Excavate debuted as a keyword when the Sylvans debuted. With more and more cards interacting with banished cards, out of play cards kinda needed a collective term. For example Pokemon calls where their banished cards go The Lost Zone

suggestion for a side series, vendred, genex and ally of justice are usable in master duel's single player, how about going through those, the good and the bad. also two archtypes are fused together in later levels in single player so could be a good time to talk about decks and deck building for example one of the loaner decks is a wynn the wind charmer
epthys deck, is that a good or bad deck and why

I loved to play Vendread+Shiranui in Duell Links. Evolution, Nights or Gozuki sending Shiranui Swordsoul and a Vendread Monster to the Graveyard to Synchro Summon from there the "powerfull" Shiranui Synchros. With Shogunsaga often exceding 5k ATK dealing the final Blow in a 4000 Life Point game. But even Duell Links is now to speedy to make that tactic viable. You already lost to Gouki/Crusadia/D/D/Dark Magician by the point you have all preperations ready for the final blow. But I still like Ritual Summoning for some odd (maybe masochistic) reason.

Once per turn active one of the following effects
1 you can return 1 vendread monster from the banish to the gy
2 during the end phase return monsters from the banish zone = to the number of ritual monsters you control

Going second wasn’t a real problem either. It was damn near game ending too if I got nibirued or got my negates taken out, but I would have the extra origin to bring out executor and possibly take something out. if the ritual effect could be applied when used from anywhere would really turn the deck around, but if they had addition minor effects when banished by a vendread card then the cost wouldn't have been so heavy. like if banished, send from deck to graveyard a vendread that is a lower level. of course once per turn
