When I was 15 years old my drum tutor invited me to his home to sit and watch this video. My life changed! I then started studying 15 hours a day. Dennis is a true master. Thank you Dennis for your passion, your love, your respect for your instrument and the desire of the soul to play like you do. I am watching this video 29 years later, that just shows what a huge inspiration this video was to me. 👍🥁👍David Curtis
This is like an early version of the isolated drum tracks. This was the golden age of fusion and funk drumming. Vinnie, Dave, Simon, Chad, Dennis etc. It was a great time to be playing.
Agreed! And Don’t forget about the Hudson Music videos too. This is my go to gem. czcams.com/video/W2pZD0sCkQI/video.htmlsi=JaPZmHPj7kDCyswh
I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis after a Mike Stern gig at Jazz Alley in Seattle back in 2008/9 period and he was an utter gentleman. Incredibly unassuming and modest. A true master of his instrument and incredible musician. A wonderful example of how meeting one of your heroes can far exceed your expectations!
yo I cant believe this on youtube my dad had this on VHS when i was a kid i watched this a million times
good kid ❤
same thing 😂
My dad too
Same here
These videos changed a lot of drummers lives. Me included. Thanks Dennis
I had Weckls Modern Drummer +1!
Chambers is a fucking legend.
Dennis here, was intouchable .Always one of the GOAT
Dennis is definitely one of the best set drummers ever! He seems so relaxed when he drums, too, which is also impressive.
I know man. Listen to his syncopation funk on that ride bell too. I love it!!
That’s the difference between the masters and the professionals. A master will look like it’s nothing and their form is part of them. Dennis Chambers, Carter Beauford, Marco Minneman among other greats are so relaxed with insane chops, power and dynamics, the total package
I played the hell out of this VHS back in the 90's and it still fascinates me to this day, one of the best studies of mind melting funk. Utterly brilliant.
That fill and bass pop @0:23, always brings me great joy. It means good things are to come. Get comfy, it’s about to go down. It means I’m about to lose and hour of my life and I’m so excited for it.
It's all about working on relaxing, that's what I'm finally realizing, practice playing in a relaxed fashion and your playing will be so much better.
That's gonna take time , practice and your forearm strength and speed will increase making a lot of what he does feel real easy. A lot of times we struggle because we don't have the endurance.
@@MultiRedman30 WORKING OUT WITH THE REAL SLOWER TEMPOS WILL INCREASE UNDERSTANDING SPACES, AWARENESS, AND WHAT I CALL CONTROL OF MOTION RANGE THAT IS WHAT REAL FLUID RELAXATION IS BUILT ON
@@larrytemp3063 good advice
@@larrytemp3063 bruh who you yell’n at?
My Dads drummer had a collection of VHS's he gave me in the early 2000's/late 90s, one of them being this "In the pocket". I had never heard or seen drumming like it. I was already playing drums for a while at that point too but this blew my mind. Til this day, I still think he's one of the GOATS. Im grateful i discovered him so early on!
Damn. When the bass and the drums just make that connection, shit gets funky.
No matter how many times I've seen this video, I still love it , Legend
One the Best of all times.I am a percussionist myself and been following him since he played with the funkadelics
Then you should know that they were Not called the funkadelics! They were FUNKADELIC!
That bass drum triplet fill @39:40 . And Gary Grainger's smile reflecting the uncanny sync feeling they got. Shit. When that happens in a practice session it's just amazing. At this level it's so magical that sounds rehearsed
It's definitely written out and rehearsed -- and it's definitely one of the landmark moments of late 80's fusion that's still blowing minds over 35 years later
See 'Good Times Bad Times' Led Zep
@@ratatat9790 yes of course its reminescent of that, anong many other fills. Ian Paice also has done similar stuff, its a nice resource by drummers who dont use double bass pedal. And amongst them Bonzo was THE MAN
Chambers is such a soloist it's great to see him drum in the pocket along with other musicians
what equally impressive is that if you listen any of his discography: Steely Dan, Scofield, Brecker Brothers, Mike Stern... and realize that he can't read and therefore had to memorize everything! He's truly one of the greatest ever.
Came for Dennis, stayed because of the music. Epic stuff. The bass tone is my kinda thing. 👌🏻
How in the holy hell does anyone click a thumbs down on this!?!?!?!?!? Timing is everything!!!! Chambers is gold!!!
People who don’t have taste. That’s who.
Envy.
They're probably complaining about the quality of the film. There are some of us who grew up with this non digital quality.
FUNKING perfect! chambers, you are the best
15:12 - "I never went to school for music. I'ma self-taught musician. You know, I had to get it the best way I can. And the best way I knew it was emulating those records."
One of the most disgustingly good drum players on the planet is self-taught...
Dennis can’t read music…
@@ChromaticHarp he'll probably be able to read music now though... When he's talking about not being able to read he's talking about the beginning of his career.
Every good drummer is self taught. Period.
@@adamthomas6803 Nonsense. Everybody has 'examples'. I know this guy who plays just like Hendrix, because he started out learning guitar with some cassette box with a guitar course based on Hendrix. Another guy was a BIG fan of The Police and developed his drumming to sound just like Copeland. But they are self taught.
@@JonathanFosa Why? You don't need to be able to read music.
This vhs got me into harvey mason. Dennis and Harvey sound almost identical. Both legends! Thanks for the upload.
Man, the Loud Jazz Groove! 😳😎 When I saw him the first time with Scofield, I felt like witness to a wonder.
OMG !! i remember when i was younger like 9 yo listening the dvd at home ! nostalgic times, miss it hahah thanks Yuri to share this pearl !
funky drumming ice cube.
super damon I said the same thing bro 😂😂 I was like i ain’t know I’ve cube played drums
🤣
そうやで
Dennis Chambers is the man
Don't disrespect a legend
That vhs cassette has inspired so many drummers.so freaking groovy
Definitely. Next level funk
Very true!
Fam...you just don't know...
I'm a drummer, and I remember renting this video at my local music shop in the 90s....Dennis and Weckl were my ish!......
We'll never see drumming like this again. Larnell Lewis is the only modern drummer on their level....
Yes yes yes!!!
@@marsournexthome Lewis sucks sir.
Blue Matter hits HARD
Jack Heet Damn, his ghosting and open/closed rolls with his LH in the intro and outro are a freakin’ Moeller technique masterclass. So tight!
Its still being one of my favorites songs of drums...
The CZcams algorithm just blessed me with this. Otherwise I would've never found it
When I think of Deno that is what I have called him since our days growing up in East B-More. I love Dennis, he is not just a great musician, but he is a great man. He has always been a family orientated person since we were kids. I am so proud he's the person these 60 plus years. He has always fascinated when watching him play the drums. He is passion personified. The love is has always carried in his heart comes through in everything he's ever done, like I said since were kids. I pray that God continues to bless him and his family.
This is awesome and amazing. I grew up on Dennis Chambers. In The Pocket & Serious Moves! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯💯💯
uwielbiam Denisa, byłem na koncercie Scofielda w Warszawie. Pozdrawiam
I saw him in Clinic and he did like Tom roll explosion after Tom roll explosion. So much power it was endless man. The best! He was calling out Dave Weckl too man. Awesome!!!
Something about he and Dave on a Special EFX recording. He felt slighted.
My favorite and 1st drummer I admired and started listening to.
O que estes fizeram pela música, ficou eternizado! Esses não tem comparação, resta apenas admiração.
Thank you for this one! Whenever I need some inspiration I just watch a few minutes of this.
Simplesmente o Mestre Do Groove! Chamber é muito tipo!
Mad thanks for uploading this!!
beautiful playing. makes it look so easy!!!!
Is you feel the music it is easy
👍🙂 FRICKIN' AWESOME!!! Great tune, too!🙂💙
Whenever I hear the name Dennis Chambers I immediately think of the intro to Protocol off of Scofield's Pick Hits Live album. Thunder.
Back in the day it was difficult to lay hands on this vhs. Its so readily available on tube.
I still own that VHS 📼 😂😜
Eu vi esse vídeo qdo era adolescente e tocava batera na igreja... muito legal, aprendi muito com esse cara... Monstro...
Amazing playing, legendary master of groove. I marked a few time stamps to parts I want to attempt learn, .
WHAT A PLEASURE IS THE FUNKY GROOVIN....
Never gets old
Muito obrigado por disponibilizar isso!!!
:D
My dad bought me this VHS easily more than 20 years ago. I truly looked up to Dennis he was the most amazing drummer to me at the time
Ko
WHAT A GRAET DRUMMER! DENNIS CHAMBERS.
So clean!
Flawless!!! This is beyond geniality ...
I used to practice with this VCR video of D-ch. I learned a lot with Dennis
God bless 🙏🏻
Sco made a beast with this Unit. Miles would be pretty happy with what Scho did here.
Amazing
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH big fan in Brazil
개대충치는데, 그래서 나오는 톤이며 손빠르기며 그루브며.... 이때 데챔형님은 넘사였다....👍👍👍
Awesome upload dude, I still got this vhs tape from back when I was studying drums in the nineties, fuckin love it!! Thanks man!
Hi Dennis I remember when I first heard you play with skylab you were a great influence on me so I started practicing more until I got the chance to play along with Panama band your biggest fan maurice from Baltimore thank you my friend
When will you have another drum clinic here please let me know I have two mean drummers you got to hear call me
VERY NICE
Freakin' AWESOME.
John's guitar solo is at 1:31 .Ends at 3:30
Just WOW!
Let's face it we're all impressed, even Mr. Whoopie say's Chum and I should give up on our dreams. Dennis is my influencer.
LEGEND...
heard so much about you.you are great.can't wait will meet you some day just to shake your hands.
DAYUM He's Da Bomb !!!!!
Flashlight is a masterpiece.
tantissima roba!!!! parlo in italiano che fanno tutti i sofisticati.... grande cozzolino per aver messo in circolazione sta bomba nucleare!!!!!! LET'S GROOVE....
Surreal!@@renattoharrison3797
This guy is a natural player!
This is the shit right here and the reason I have huge respect and admiration for players like these four gentleman. Because although it would be wonderful I couldn't come close to playing like that. If I could change minds with Scofield for a year or so I would do it in a heart beat so I could steal his licks.
Classic!
Wow, Dennis really is good in this video
lol nice cissy strut groove section
love how sco jumps it early and the whole rhythm section then just carves right into it 20:28
Toca muito p mim é o melhor
Apparently this was circa 1992 in case you were wondering :)
Nice ty
he is so groovy!
There is a ridiculous fill at 1:00:40! Back in the late 90s, it took me months to learn it because I had to put the VCR on slow motion to see the contact points.
I feel you. Now I copy every track on my harddrive, then play it on my cell phone on VLC at the exact speed I want!
My question is are those nice doubles or hella fast singles?
MultiRedman30 Fast singles
Nice upswing on the crash to finish off
Damn I remember watching that over and over and not got it down🤣
The drumming here is so cool: 50:54
Brasil 👏👏👏👏
trop fort ce mec
Lenda!
Champion - Braovo - Super - Génial
Back in 2000 I used to study this video every day before I went on tour. And I don’t even play drums 😂
THE MASTER
Arnold et Willy :) good time !!!
Thks @Yuri C. !
at 39:00... It's a gift I have that kind of chemistry.
Most people take it for granted.
.... for some reason it doesn't appeal to them to be real enough.
The fact that I wasn't schooled traditionally for educators but still can follow and write the words to the music that people playing the same way has been dismissed even after fronting as the singer...was never good enough.
More thier loss than mine but noot reslly bcause of ignorantized faantaciess tghat nnesver becaame to the depth of true reallity.
We only live once.
...thankss for almost something?...is what I sayy to the has- beens that neverf were.
Super talent we watchin herr🎶
My tempo ❤
Watching this back all these years later, it makes perfect sense that Chambers should have been Led Zeppelin's replacement. It would have sounded massive.
I still have the vhs and can’t watch thanks for the rip
31:40 "yeah it took me 3 years to get used to all the pot.."
GOAT
Can you find Rick Latham Advance Funk Series. I love it too, Thank you!!
traduzido pra português? nem acredito 🇧🇷😎😎😎👍👍👍👍👍👍
Is that John Scofield on guitar?
+SuperBass1964 Yeah! I love Sco with these guys!
+SuperBass1964
yes he is, is the scofield band of the mid 80's with which dennis chambers rose to his position among the world's top drummers.
💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Ainda tem gente, que dá deslik. Com certeza essas pessoas não entendi de música.
Deve ser fã de pagode ou sertanejo para dar deslike...
