  • Spain news update and a look at some of the main news stories that have caught my attention this week. Also, I look at the Chega political party that is shaking Portugal and see what they have to offer. Are they populists or far right?

    2.5 years in prison for an unwanted kiss. The same system that let free 4 (were they 4?) rapists who recorded themselves raping a girl at her house when she returned from a festival/fiesta in her town... That's the sure way to make people doubt the "justice" part in the Spanish justice system (the same system that protects okupas and not the property owners). While a "don't do that again" fine or a sentence to work for the community would have been acceptable (from my uneducated point of view, of course) for senor Rubiales, 2 years and a half of prison? Why, did he rape her? Do they cumulate other problems for this instance? Is it really a judge decision for 2.5 years in prison or is it just the press?
    I do not want to lessen the significance of doing something against a person's will, of harming someone. I do not want to give the impression that "I want" to lessen the sexual abuse punishments. But 2 and a half years of prison for a not-wanted kiss?!

      The feminist movement has caused so many problems for Western culture. From sentencing disparities in every country, to birth rates being unsustainable. Nothing is going to stop this until society collapses, and their no men around to defend it.

    • @az_spain
      @az_spain Před měsícem +3

      I think the sentence was because of prolonged abuses to the whole team, not just the kissing event, which was the straw that broke the camel's back. The abuses may have seemed trivial or a silly game to him or many, but are obviously not acceptable because of his position, so it is seen as ongoing sexual harassment and power abuse.

      If it had been a woman that gave a man an unwanted kiss, 2.5 yrs prison? They would laugh it off. Double standard?

      Like someone else pointed out the "kiss" was the straw that broke the camel´s back. He has had a history of unwanted and sexual harassment but it has always been sorta shoo away...this behavior will no longer be tolerated.

      We assume the kiss was unwanted. But do we have proof? What is the law on kissing? Do you have to get permission in all cases? How does the concept of romance fit in to this? Who makes the first move? This should be researched further . . .😘😘

    The programme as others have said sounds like a mix of right and left policies. Nothing that is “far right”. In my opinion “far right” is an expression that is very much over used these days. Far right describes parties like those that Hitler, Franco and Mussolini led. These current parties are a far cry from those days. People like to fling labels about and scaremonger

    Hi Stu
    The siesta should be scrapped, and working times should be 9.00 to 5pm like most countries in the union. Also to cut down on the enviroment having to travel 4 times a day back and forth to work crazy. And the time zone should also be put back to GMT.
    I feel sorry for those people who have to have two clocks that work in Gibraltar from Spain everyday. and Portugal when they cross the border. Afterall the canaries are on GMT time which is Spain. Thanks again for your videos.

    • @stevemitchell7839
      @stevemitchell7839 Před měsícem +3

      Working times should be flexible, because of the hot climate. It ain't Germany! Adjust for cultural & geographical differences.

    • @az_spain
      @az_spain Před měsícem +1

      @@stevemitchell7839 they pretty much are, although it is mostly the companies that decide, not workers, except for in some multinationals. In today's Spain, aside of the 'siesta myth', most workers don't get that privilege. In rural areas perhaps, when you work close to your town, you may go home for lunch, in most cities, nobody would drive out of town for lunch, and most companies will have shifts anyway, like 8 h work shifts and a short break for whatever lunch and rest you can get. Local small shops will close during midday hours, mostly because they can afford to go home and get their lunch cheap and cozy. So they do close, and then usually stay open a lot later for the evening tourists walking by. I do hear many foreign criticisms to the siesta, perhaps because they found a shop closed when outing in the mid day heat, during local lunch hours. That expression, "mad dogs and English men" I never understood as a (British) child, until living in Spain. I don't think the whole "siesta" dylemma interferes at all with work productivity, if so it would perhaps enhance it in my opinion. During the summer months most jobs will have a "summer time" shift, which means, work from 6-7 until around 15h when the heat is no longer bereable, and you are dehydrated for the day, then go a look for some intense shade, close the blinds and crash until the evening breeze comes. This is the reality of the siesta 😂 Many will also have bad night sleep during the summer when the buildings heat up and start irradiating heat out during the night, it can be hard to get to sleep even with a good A/C system.
      This is life in Spain, it is quite diverse and there are a lot of contrasts, traditions and lifestyle ideals, that most in modern times only enjoy if they are a passive income business owners, are on holidays, or unemployed and living with their parents 😅 I'm sorry for the essay Stu! The siesta is such a topic! 🥰 I love it

    So Stu, what your saying is be careful of the "rubbish" that is available on social media but it's OK for You Tube to censor what they want, of course, that's how you mainly make your living. Why don't you just tell it the way it is, the real way you feal about things and see how You Tube reacts.

    I say England and not Britain because the friendship predates the United Kingdom. It was English crusaders that helped King Alfonso capture Lisbon from the Muslims and we've been mates ever since.

      There was a bit of unpleasantness during the Iberian Union, when Faro was sacked and the Bishop of Faro's library was stolen (now in Oxford Uni), and during the Commonwealth there were some more issues, but we kept Boney at bay and kept Spain from taking over, and they helped out in WW1 and discreetly in WW2.

    In a time when people lived above the store, siesta was practical. Today, with long commutes and deliveries at all hours, siesta simply doesn't work the way it used to. Never mind any other type of economic disadvantage a business might suffer from closing for three hours during the day.

    Great video Stuart, thanks for sharing it with us. Interesting stuff about the new Portuguese political party. I can't blame people for giving their vote to an alternative party, especialy when they have put up with inadequate governments which have been failing for years and years. We have a similar new party in the UK which calls itself Reform. I'm expecting a big swing at the next election at least from the Conservative party following their abismal performance. About the forbidden kiss--why not just leave the guy alone. Wouldn't an apology be sufficient? Seems like many public figures committing far more unsavory acts have settled the matter with a simple apology. If he broke a particular law, what was it? Punishing him for simply stupid behavior. Ms Diaz needs to leave Spanish culture alone and let the market determine the working times. There’s a reason why Spaniards have a wonderful quality And quantity of life. The diet, the wine, the siesta. Even if you don’t take a nap, taking a break relax’s the mind & body. Plus the Spanish summers are Brutal in the afternoons. And don’t forget! The siesta has its origins in the farming community when as you know in Spain during midday it gets very hot.Im sure the Spanish will if these Northern countries shout loud enough at them they will change their working schedule to suit them.
