    I'm from Aachen, born and raised. This video makes me proud :D
    Edit: 4:06 I have to correct him there: Aachen functioned as an imperial palatinate under Charlemagne as the capital of the Frankish Empire (It can be said that Aachen was the capital of Europe at that time) between 768 and 813. At the time of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Aachen was a free imperial city from 1166 and accordingly enjoyed autonomy and various economic and political privileges within the Empire. Aachen was also called the Aachen Empire. Only with the occupation by Napoleon from 1792 Aachen lost this status.

    • @walkir2662
      @walkir2662 Před 11 měsíci +10

      Yep. Capital of the Frankish Empire. The Holy Roman Empire didn't even *have* a capital.

      As another guy from Aachen - born and raised - i appriciate that correct comment as well as the whole video. Sometimes you have to see how people from other places react to what you are used to to really enjopy it 🤭

      @publicminx Před 8 měsíci

      there was no 'Charlemagne' (stop usng this WRONG name - which was a much later localized french name which the english wrongly adapted). The name of the guy was Karl/Carl (or latin: Karolus Magnus/Carolus Magnus). And because of that ALL historical sources refer to 'Karl', the entire history (which was a mixture of Germanic law and Roman) can only understood by getting this. And if one gets this then it is also not surprising that from Italy (CarloMagno) to Spain (Carlo Magno, but also the name Carlos/Carla), all Germanic language spheres refer to Karl/Carl, also Slavic refer in different variations to a Karl or later Karl Lines (like 'Karluv most' for the Karlsbruecke/bridge in Prague) ... Charlemagne is a typicl result when people without knowledge just use English words without knowing that it is NOT always 'correct'. 'Charles' is also based on he original Karl (obviously) but in difference to many other historical localized names (likeTutanchamun) there are still Karls/Carls around till today and one also has the entire scripts/textsl, architectures connected to that.

    Just to give you a perspective about the Aachen cathedral seen at 3:30 : The main door, the wolf's door is still the original bronze door from around 800.
    When the founding fathers sailed to America with the Mayflower 400 years ago, that door was already in use for more than 800 years.

    if you are interrested in beatifull and historic important cities you are in Germany in the right place.
    The sights are very diverse from north to south and east to west and they are all beatifull as hell!
    Here are some beautiful Cities you should definitely see besides the 'typical" Places for a short visit in Germany :
    Dresden (!!! definitely see Dresden if you have the chance to !!!), Leipzig, Würzburg, Bamberg, Hamburg, Lübeck, Heidelberg (yeah, I know... ), Rotenburg ob der Tauber, Potsdam, Weimar

  • @benjamineer3045
    @benjamineer3045 Před 11 měsíci +17

    Aachen or Aix is literally one of the most important city as it was the Capital of Charlemagne's Empire. The history of western and central Europe started here. Without the Court there and the library that Charles build, Europe probably would never started it educational and scientific flurish. Neither France nor Germany would exist in this form (and many other nations as well). Aachen remained a very important city throughout the entire existence of Holy Roman Empire until it end in 1806. Many of the old buildings were build on behalf of Charles and since he was such a crucial leader were always maintained well. Onto of all that Aachen has one of the best technical universities in Europe, that is part of the backbone of german engineering.

      @@Dave1507some buildings were completely rebuilt. But some others like the Frauenkirche were rebuilt with the original material and incorporating the original structure.
      The Frauenkirche is amazing, you can clearly see the difference between the completely burned and heavily cracked stone that survives together with the new sandstone that was used in the reconstruction. Also you can find a huge number of war memorials some active and some places that were intentionally not rebuilt.
      Those places are amazing. Just got to be a little careful with the right wing demonstrations and counter demonstrations. They can and do get violent.

    nice that you made to Aachen. I went to university in Aachen and now my son. I frequentlly do a little visit and enjoy the city. It's imho one of the nicest German cities. History, of course. But so much more. A quarter of the population in Aachen are students. Which makes it to one of the "youngest" cities in Germany. And it is an international city. You can simply walk to the Netherlands and Belgium. Hence there are no boarders in the EU, it doesn't matter where you do your shopping. Wanna go to Ikea? The closest Ikea is in the Netherlands. Want to visit a really nice dutch city? Mastricht, 45 minutes by publice transport, 30 minutes by car. It's right in the heart of western Europe. You here many languages in Aachen. The city got a great spirit. For more then two millenniums now.

Cologne was more destroyed during the war compared to Aachen, but it is also one of the most chaotic cities I gave ever seen.... maybe it is a little comparable to Boston in terms of traffic jams and one way streets. Even though, the streets in Boston are different. Love to see more. Take care and enjoy life ❤

I actually wasn't much in the "big cities" though, although coming from a town, which is pretty much right in between Aachen and Cologne. Speaking of which, you might want to visit one of the biggest digging places in the world. Check out "Tagebau Hambach", there are also visiting points with an overview of that gigantic hole. Due to that place I can pinpoint my hometown by about 5km, when googlemaps is so much zoomed out I can see the whole planet. ^^

This town is actually better known world wide than in Germany because of that. Where many Germans haven't heard of it, ask a Japanese and he'll most likely have heard of it. It's crazy.
    Quedlinburg does have a castle with a cathedrale/big church. It's got an amazing inner city with a lot of Fachwerkhaus. A large market place in front of the town hall, loads of smaller areas that are former trade areas for one craft etc. Some of the roads are tiny, like max 2 people passing each other. There's even a road called "Hölle" (hell). The houses in the inner city are mostly well taken care of. Maybe try to get on a tour with the Nachtwächter (night guardian).
    In contrast, there's also Plattenbau, buildings built during the time of the GDR for housing as many people as possible.
    Also, you can start a train journey through the Harz mountains. The Schmalspurbahn has a starting point there, as far as I know. It's tracks are different, more narrow. You might even are able to get on o coal powered train (like, a real old train, they're keeping them well maintained and run them on special occasions and also on a regular basis on certain routes - at least the last time I checked).
    The town's different from Cologne or Aachen. It's small. But also a beautiful little gem, that's also pretty open to the world due to a lot of tourism.

    I'm absolutely stunned, that when at the fkn Aachener Dom, you didn't take five minutes to sit down at one the benches or the fountain and just take it in...although, maybe you did, in which case i apologize sincerely. I hope you did, mate...😉😘❤🍻

    You really should look for a trip to the Mosel Region in germany. Many castles and medieval city cores. In Alken there is a very nice 'city' core and a castle with a funny story up the hills. ^^ Also it's not too far from Cologne and Aachen. Maybe liek 2 houres in a car. Also you get super nice views on all the wine fields.

    Next time you're here, think of visiting the Ruhrgebiet👍🏽 there are a couple of citys so close together that you wont even notice when you go from one to another. You got all sorts of interesting stuff with for example the biggest Football Stadium in Germany (look for "Gelbe Wand"), the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. In Essen you got the "Zeche Zollverein" a Unesco World Culture Heritage where there used to be coal mining and processing. And there are a lot more.
    When you hear about the history and then visit it's completely insane because just 50 years ago it was dirty and grey due to the hightime of the coal mining in the area.
    Today there is almost no coal mining anymore and it became so green in the area that you can't even imagine it anymore.
    When you liked Aachen and Köln it's a great tip. It's always crazy to see how generally peaceful the area is when you see how many different peoples and cultures clash here🙏🏼

    Heyo, really enjoying your videos and experiences! Here's a quick tip, when filming in Europe, set your camera settings to 50Hz instead of the US standard 60Hz. This way you'll avoid the weird flickering from our light sources 👌

    A tip for your next trip to Germany: I like your videos in general, but I especially celebrate your enthusiasm for historic architecture seen so far in your travels to Germany. Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen or Aachen are beautiful cities, but if you really want to see historic medieval city centers in Germany, there are a few tips that will definitely blow your mind. For example, Bamberg in northern Bavaria. And besides the medieval architecture, the beer there will completely blow you away, no matter what you've tried before.
