    I have bought this guitar in sonic grey (which is a grey color with greenish vibes) in 2021. The strings it came with were 9s and I had to tune it constantly. The neck was very dry, almost like a raw wood feeling. The fret ends were a little bit sharp, but it was not that bad. I did file the frets anyway, oiled the fingerboard, changed the strings to 10s, adjusted the action, set the intonation and now it plays really well, stays in tune, and it's generally a fun little guitar to grab anytime. I would also recommend it.

    since they stole my usa stratocaster year of construction 1972 I bought the mustang because i can not afford expensive guitar anymore as a pensioner. I have tested many guitars under 180 euros ... there is no better for the price than this mustang. the humbucker surprised me with the clear sound and the guitar is so light that comes my old back after more than 50 years of stage performances to good.the only thing I changed is the strings at strength 0.10-0.46

      Thanks for your input Willy. Yes, I absolutely agree with you on these pickups, they are pretty clear and not muffled. They have a great balance for a humbucker. With my experience with a guitar at this low price you can almost expect to change the pickups. There is no need to change the pickups on this Squire Mustang. The pickups are great. Thanks so much for your input, it's great to hear your opinion based on your experience. That's a pitty someone lifted your US Strat. Sorry to hear that. Take care.

    I got a Surf Green model today at my local Guitar Center. Brought my amp to use it with, although it turned out they had that exact same one (go figure!). Floor model sounded great, but just to be sure I asked for and received one from the stockroom. They had two back there, so I picked the one that appeared to be in the best condition. It only needed some nut adjustment. For its price, it sounds _awesome._ The humbuckers have a much better-rounded (to my ears anyway) sound than the treble-heavy excuses for 500T clones on my PRS Mark Tremonti Signature, even with the difference in string gauges (for now). I was thinking of replacing them with a Duncan Custom/'59 combo when the stock strings wear out and I get heavier ones, but now that I've heard how they sound in person, I might keep them.

    The reason the guitar or any guitar sounds like it’s out of tune when you’re cording after you’ve turned it with all the strings open. The intonation is off. If you want to get more accurate turning after you Adjust the intonation, tune your guitar strings at the fifth fret instead of open strings. That is more accurate

  • @marike1100
    @marike1100 Před 6 lety +123

    You likely need to set the intonation by adjusting the bridge saddles. If I had to guess, I'd say the fretted note at the 12th fret is way sharp of the harmonic of the same note. This is the first thing that needs to be fixed on most inexpensive guitars.

All of this is normal 1960's style playing, but do any bends, etc... get one and retune. I think the Mustang at 24 in is a good go between of a full size and the crazy that is 3/4. The intonation issues can be resolved by installing shorter screws (I think 3mm diameter) in the Low E and G string saddles. The screws are too long and hit the string when these saddle are adjusted. I also put in a graph tech tusq nut (42mm - PQ-5042-00). I also put in some wilkinson ez-lok black tuners). Additionally, the .09 strings IMHO are to slinky and finger pressure variances in chording make it very sensitive and can cause it to seem out of tune. I put .10s on. With these mods, the guitar plays real nice and stays in tune well. I have the black color model, but like the looks of the surf green.

      Patience is the key if there is something specific you really want; decide what you really want to hunt down, do your research to see what a good price would be, set alerts on eBay/FB etc and save your cash so that when one eventually comes up you are ready to pounce. I picked up a Squier Jazzmaster Deluxe (basically the awesome J Mascis one but red instead of white) for circa 240 USD recently (so not just a Jazzmaster, but a really good quality one) and previously got a Fender Tele for 100 (Korean; oddity from the 90's, crappy body but good neck).
      As an aside, don't be afraid to try lesser known brands to see if they suit you. My go to guitar is a beat up but solid Hohner JT60 from the 90's that I picked up for about 40 USD; went to it not having any expectations (I do love to try an offset guitar) but turned out it was the guitar I didn't even know I was looking for.
      The Peavey Raptor I picked up for pocket change on the other hand, I'm gonna donate to the local school music room (nothing 'wrong' with it, but it's just not for me). Money I could have saved for something I really wanted, but heck, maybe some school kid will appreciate it more than the usual garbage instruments they have in the school (I do feel obliged to upgrade the electronics first though; as the stock electronics are junk... there I go spending good money after bad where I could be saving up for a nice Jaguar or something if I listened to my own advice 😋..... no one said guitarists were consistent or smart!)

I really love this guitar, but the top load bridge is shit (I hate them), and the saddles suck ass on this guitar, so I have a new TusQ-XL nut, stringsaver TusQ saddles, Fender locking tuners, and TusQ-XL string trees coming for it. My old Squier Fat Strat ended up giving me CTS due to my small hands, and I was using my wrist to compensate in very bad ways. WIth this guitar I can do a full four finger F Barre chord.

      Absolutely killer for punk. Maybe put a higher output humbucker in the bridge after a while, but otherwise, this thing is great for punk. I tuning bothers you (which it shouldn't for punk) then also change the tuners, but at that point, you've already payed the value of the guitar again in mods. Maybe look at the fender duo sonic/ mustang with the humbucker as a long term investment.

    • @MikeFromNashville
      @MikeFromNashville  Před 6 lety +3

      kmatt12 There are a few options. Here is what I did and mine doesn’t go out of tune.
      1. Tighten the Tuning Machines. Mine were loose.
      2. Make sure you stretch the strings when you install new strings or with the current strings you have on. Tune the guitar and pull each string stretching each string with a good pull. I installed 11 gauge strings because the short scale the heavier gauged strings don’t feel as heavy as they would on a longer scale neck.
      3. The nut is almost always the culprit to a guitar going out. I avoided changing my nut buy applying “Nut Sauce” to my bridge slots. I use Big Bends Nut Sauce. You can find it on EBay. You lube each slot. That for me does the trick.
      If this doesn’t work you can have the Nut replaced but this is what I did and it no longer goes out of tune.

    Played one at the store today. Same color and everything. Honestly, all the upgrades you suggested are cool and i would do them too, but really I dont think it "needs" to be modded. A fresh set of real strings and fixing the intonation is all it "needs". A few weeks ago i got rid of all my supposedly great used old gear for the money garbage amps and guitars. Took the 💰 and bought a blues junior, vox ac15 and a bullet strat. Best sounds and most fun ive have in years on guitar. To any beginners who might be watching, buy the best amp you can to start off with and get whatever guitar you can afford with the 💰 left over. The "tone" is 90% in your fingers, 9.9% is in the amp. The other .1 is in the guitar. Oh, pedals are worthless, skip'em.

      Mister Knight Bear & Co. your totally right about that. I put 12 gauge strings and adjusted the intonation and it was great. I also added a new nut but only because I had one that wasn’t being used. Thanks!!

      If your guitar won't stay in tune, it definitely "needs" the mods, dude.
