  • In this demo/review I run through a few Nirvana songs to demo this Short Scale "beginners guitar"
    Squier Bullet Mustang:
    Thomann - thmn.to/thopro...
    Andertons - bit.ly/3Ut9QtF
    Sweetwater - imp.i114863.ne...
Big in Grunge music in the 90s and slightly easier for people with smaller hands (people like children), I'm pretty sure this very cheap, small electric will be popular
    Other notable Mustang players include
    Bilinda Butcher (My Bloody Valentine)
    Azusa Nakano (Houkago Tea Time)
    Matthew Healy (The 1975)
    Adrian Belew.
    Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
    Rob Buck (10,000 Maniacs)
    David Byrne (Talking Heads)
    John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
    Gear used
    Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amplifier
    Boss DS-1
    Arion SCH-Z Chorus (MODDED)
    MightySound M3 Fuzz
    Shure SM57
    Audient ID22 interface
    Mac running Logic Pro X

Really hate when people don't give credit to Kurt on the guitar.. Was he Steve vai? No but the songs he made with that instrument will forever be remembered as some of the best riffs of all time, while 99% of the people in the world can't name a vai, bonamassa, malmsteen song to save there life, guitar playing is not always about shred and speed, and tapping

B Mark I think it's better to be known as a great song writer than guitarist mind, which in kurt's case is why he's so remembered over his technically average guitar playing ability

Honestly I killed the video right when he said who his favorite guitarist was. There is nothing in Nirvana's whole catalogue that tough to play. What makes him a good guitarist? Easy to play songs? It shouldn't make you mad that not many give him credit. He played it very safe and never really challenged himself on the instrument.

no... he wasn't. he was definitely a product of his time. listen to bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins and Unwound and you realise he was just extremely marketable. that's not to completely discredit him, as he had a great ear for melody and made many iconic pop songs, but he still wasn't ahead of his time.

I started playing guitar in 1987(not that it sounds like it, and there WAS a 10+ year layoff), and back then, a $150 guitar would have made a better door stop than a musical instrument. The inexpensive(-$600) guitars nowadays have increased in quality **exponentially** in the last 10-12 years.

soulagent79 out of curiousity, is the pickguard on the bullet mustang the same size as the fender mustang? Do you think they'd be interchangeable? I want one or two of these, but one I want to modify with the pickup switches, and add a toggle for Tom Morello style effect. But I'd like to keep the 'buckers too. Idk, unless it would be easy enough to cut out a spot for the switches, but I don't know if I trust myself not to screw that up.

A guitar is a tool. You don't need to shred a million notes to create a song that will be remembered for decades. Usually takes 3 to 5 chords, and a good voice. Cobain had all that and more. Like Pink Floyd, like the Beatles, like Radiohead.. Like the greatest musicians ever.

Great review! I've had mine for a week and love it. I even had a spare mustang neck lying around, but decided to use the stock one. Just polished the frets and replaced the nut. Not sure if only my guitar had this problem, but the outer saddles had too short height screws, causing the saddles to vibrate. Changed them for longer ones and have had no problems since. All in all it's hard to believe this guitar costs only 135€.

The height screws on my saddle are just fine. Maybe you got lucky/unlucky. I think that's the thing with Squier guitars outside of the CV and VM range, they are a little hit and miss. Even so, €135 for this much guitar is frankly shocking.

I play 11's on the strat & Tele, so I would imagine I'd want to put 13's on such a short-scale guitar (couldn't imagine this one with 9's - sheesh!). I used to own a real, vintage 1966 Mustang (shouldn't have sold it)... That thing absolutely refused to stay in tune. This new one with the hardtail must be much better.

After watching this review I ordered one for my son and I to modify. We picked it up over the weekend, and either we got lucky or Squier/Fender listened to complaints and fixed the issues with it. With the exception of one thumb-sized spot where the neck and headstock meet, the neck is perfect. The bridge, which I was expecting to need modifying, was already perfectly intonated. I checked the screws, and the problematic ones looked to have either been filed down already, or replaced by shorter screws.
I'm blown away by how great this guitar is, and even more so with such a low price. We picked up this and a G&L Fallout Tribute to compare and then see how they'd compare after making some changes to the Mustang, and while we are still going to make them, it honestly doesn't need them. Truly is the best budget guitar I've ever played. Still can't believe it's only $150.

      @bufferkiller Před 7 lety +2

I was thinking that maybe they got enough complaints that they fixed the issue, since the screws in my bridge were not all the same length and seemed to have been adjusted just as you had to do.
Will do. Right now we are just replacing all of the hardware with black hardware of the same kind, with the grover locking tuners and roller trees like you have being the exception. Got a matte black pickguard as well, and will be throwing in an orange drop. Leaving the pickups as is, just shielding them, because they really are perfect for what they're made for.

Easy nut lube is a little coconut oil on a qtip and apply it in the string slots every time you change your strings. Coconut oil is also ok to use on the dry fretboard these are notorious for. It's not the best product to use, but it's cheap, common, and will do the kob well.

I bought this guitar on christmas for my little brother but he doesn't use it at all, so I'm going to mod it and use it as backup guitar.
    My impressions:
    - The guitar is very light
    - The action is very(!) low and it plays great. I really like the neck.
    - The intonation is slightly off, especially on the higher frets
    - There is a tiny ding on the side of the fretboard(first fret)
    - I can't really judge the pickups too much because of the intonation but I don't seem to like them
It may sound like there are lots of negatives, but for that price this is actually a very good guitar imo.
And with the mods, I'll try to make it a good guitar, not only for the money.

CNC machines work the same way building Squiers as they do building Fender Custom Shop guitars. The big differences are in finish/setup and electronics. I have a Squier Jazzmaster because I just liked the neck. It felt better than the Fender alternatives I had available to try out so I bought the Squier for $200. I then did my own setup and bought some new electronics to install. Done. What disappoints many in the market for a cheap guitar is the inconsistency from unit to unit and the poor setup out of the box. If you don't know how to set it up yourself, it's well worth the investment to get a pro to do it for you.

      Hi Robert. Thank you.
I have large hands and I find playing anything past the 12th fret quite difficult at the moment. I may lower the action which would help this. I certainly wouldn't want this as an only guitar but as an addition, it really stands out next to my strats and more "normal" studio guitars.
1:58 is "Come as you are"
      2:47 is "Heart shaped box"
3:38 is just something I was jamming, loosely inspired by "Prehistoric Dog" by Red Fang. Great band by the way

You can always swap the neck out with a Warmoth if you want, or swap the pickups or tuners. Honestly imo it'd be smarter (& more fun) to upgrade a squier than buy a way more expensive fender. Not trashing fender at all (though I do like PRS way more) but I do think Squiers are super underrated, they just need some TLC & mods. Yeah they're generally for beginners but at least they're well made for the most part, plus they're absurdly cheap. Are the frets buzzing or is it the electronics? Like is it a hum kind of sound, or a buzz? If it’s a humming, you may need to get it re-shielded on the inside. If it’s the frets, bring it to a luthier. The recording might be a microphone issue.

@@nehemiahzo_ I recorded it directly from the rec output in the amp. It is a buzz coming from the electronics. I opened the guitar and tried to change the position of the grounding cable, because I thought that it might be the problem. Sadly I was not successful until now.

I think it's an excellent guitar. Definitely the best Squier I've played in recent years (not counting classic vibe)
Are you thinking of getting one?

i hane a squier jazzmaster its nice if you make some mods with the bridge and shim the neck, i think the classic vibe 50s strat is the best
