  • Jose, age 26, thought he was perfectly healthy when he stopped by his doctor's office to pick up the results of a blood test, but he soon learned that he was very ill. After extensive testing, doctors determine that Jose has both lupus and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a dangerous clotting disorder. To learn more about TTP and other blood disorders, visit ASH's patient resources webpage hematology.org/Patients/.

My mom was diagnosed with TTP in 2003. She had epilepsy, seizures and at least once a week needed plasmapheresis. She fought going in and out of the hospital for 9 years. She died in 2013 just before her 36th birthday. It was very traumatic for me growing up having to watch my mom go through all of that. It’s almost been 8yrs that she’s been gone and it’s like I never had a mom cus all my memories of her are so blurry.
I sure hope one day there’s a cure to this horrible disease🥺

I was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 16 I am now 49 and suffer from TTP, as well as APLS which is another form of lupus. I'm on approximately 34 medications including blood thinners but once you have it managed you can have a good life. In the 32 years I've had these diseases it has come along way with the technology. I was in the guinea pig stages but I'm happy to say I got married and I have five beautiful daughters that are in their late and mid 20"s and still are negative for the disease. I have had them tested every year at their physicals since they were around 10. Good luck and have a happy happy life. One thing that helped me get through was the belief that I controlled the disease it did not control me. God Bless

It is truly a blessing that more information is now available about TTP. I was diagnosed in 1988, very little was known then. It took 3 months for a diagnosis (I had migraine headaches, bruising, and multiple mini-strokes). I was given a 10% chance of survival. By the grace of God, it's 25 years later and I'm still here. There is still much to learn about this rare condition.

My family and I are tremendously grateful to all the doctors and nurses at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for seeing what the problem was in 2hrs. I was diagnosed w Lupus (&many other auto immune diseases) in 1987 I then got A severe case of chronic TTP (twice) in 1995 &97 I lived 8 months on oncology floor at hospital having the community blood bank coming in daily getting 13 units of donor plasma for 8 hours every day through Plasma pharesis. Eventually coming in every day as an outpatient doing it. I suggested to my Dr if he could Just INFuSE the plasma instead of TRANSFUSE & it worked ! I only needed 3hours of plasma instead of 8 hours of taking my blood out, separating throwing my plasma away & putting my whole blood & donor plasma on me thru plasma pharesis! Matter of fact my Dr was so happy he wrote a paper about my idea how it worked & he had the paper published in a medical journal & he told me that it helped many patients !
Now in this video they it sounds like there is a medication & patients don't always need Plasma Pharesis ? Wow so cool! Also now that my TTP went into remission I have Completed opposite another but different auto immune blood disease called Anti phosphis lipids where my blood is Now Too Thick ! When I had TTP my platelets were 2000! Now I have Also DVTs! Unfortunately I have an ivc filter in me (cuz the. Blood thinning meds are too dangerous) & the filter is a Recalled one! But it's working so I'm not rushing to have it taken out tho I shld so it doesn't break
But I'm happy positive & just trying to live like I don't have 13 diseases ! LOL blessings! 🙏🏻🙏🏼🙏🏽

This disease may be caused by the lack of an enzyme (ADAMTS13) that is involved in blood clotting. Not having enough of this enzyme causes clotting to occur. As the platelets clump together in these clots, fewer platelets are available in the blood in other parts of the body to help with clotting. This can lead to bleeding under the skin and purple-colored spots called purpura

The way you feel is painfully familiar to me too. I’m 27 yo and I was diagnosed with unidentified thrombocytopenia at age 5. I’ve been in and out of hospital for my entire life with 12 years of remission until October 2020 when they diagnosed me with TTP. I can’t hold my blood counts even after plasmapheresis and plasma intake. Doctors also think I was born with it but it got worse after I got pregnant. I had an abortion because they couldn’t save both me and my baby... I’m in hospital for 2 months now undergoing plasma treatment every day.

Hi Gautam, I had ITP for most of my childhood growing up, and I want to tell you that I cured myself by eating only fruit for 3 months, My platelets went in the normal range and I never had it again, and its been 20 years since.
I found out after it was the nutrients and minerals that I was lacking. If you are on processed foods then go plant based for three months and watch your ITP disappear as you heal and replenish your body with what your microbiome needs.
Much Love sent to you, I hope you try to go plant based, just for 3 months. There are lots of plant based recipes online, but fruit is the key ;)

I'm glad to report that I have been symptom free and off medications for over 7 years.
I was on a high dose of prednisone for most of 2 years and received emergency IVIg infusions several times.
In late 2011 I underwent treatment with Rituximab. We then began tapering off prednisone and things were looking good. About 7 months after the Rituximab things went bad, Evans returned. Anemia, bruises, petechiae, purpura, bleeding, and not healing were all present again. Late 2012 to early 2013 we did the Rituximab treatment a second time. Over the next few months I did several juice fasts. I consumed only organic fresh vegetable and fruit juice that I prepared daily for stretches of about a week at a time usually. No other food was consumed. I was able to taper off the prednisone and have been symptom free ever since.
