When you HAVE TO invest your time to learn something it's about stress.
When you WANT TO invest your time to learn something it's about passion.
I have an engineering degree and the university has been hard and stressful for me. When I decided to dedicate myself to the creation of videos, I started learning everything in every moment with a big smile on my face.
I think the HUGE problem that makes people avoid that route is money. Everybody traps themselves in a way that they're stuck and have very little time away from their jobs and therefore they are to scared to take the leap that they want.
@@georgev3320 I agree with you. But day after day the money you can get from an hour of your time are worthless if you feel that this hour was wasted. Obviously you still have to find a way to pay the bills (or you could have a few savings, like in my case)

Isn’t it crazy that, in school, we’re not taught how to learn...?
Content, content, content...📚
Homework, homework, homework... ✍🏼
Exams, exams, exams... 📖 .
But we’re never properly taught HOW to learn all that content, do the homework efficiently, and therefore implement what we’ve been ‘taught’ (not in the three schools I went to, anyway).
Maybe we’re given flashcards & coloured pens, but we aren’t equipped with productive methods to recall & implement information when we need it.
Therefore, we go out into the real world and we haven’t learned how to learn.
I don’t know about you, but that’s a problem to me.

Even though I'm a college professor and I encourage my students to stay in school, I'm impressed with your thoughts on self-directed learning. The hierarchy of competence is something I teach my students, and I appreciate your reference to it. I love that you encourage your audience to LEARN, which is what is important and it doesn't matter the vehicle used. Great job. Keep spreading this excellent content.
How do you have so much self discipline?
Start by making your bed, cleaning up after yourself, focusing on one thing at a time, do things you don't want to do, go to the gym daily, take cold showers etc. You'll never get anywhere when your comfortable.

Here is a fun way to build self discipline:
First, buy a chocolate bar or any kind of sweets and place it on a place that you visit every day (for example your desk). You're only allowed to eat it after a certain time period like 7 days. After those 7 days you will probably have some more self discipline and as a bonus a reward (the chocolate bar)
(Btw: if you have roommates this might not quite work for you 🤣)

I love the internet as a learning platform and use it actively every single day, but I feel that saying that we have access to all human knowledge through the internet, and you only need to learn how to find it, is only true for some very popular/mainstream interests (as fx photography, entrepreneurship etc).
Since starting university I can't tell you how many times I've been unable to find content on a subjects that goes deep enough, most of it (even if very high quality) is simply oftentimes too shallow. I think that you only realize that, when you've been exposed/pushed to discover aspects of a concept that aren't mentioned in a 15 min article. So in some ways I feel like the internet learning method can give people a false feeling of knowledgeability when comparing to oneself with (even great) internet sources/people and make them suffer the Dunning-Kruger effect.
With that said, I think all your points are valid when used in the right context.

I study programming online and I get distracted all the time. Learning to improve that will help me so much...

When I'm programming I'm in like a total trance almost drinking no water or eating for hours lol just did that for last 5 hours.
Only when I have a fun project though client work is mostly fixing bugs that's when I get distracted too.
The thing is if you start you should at one point go do fun projects on you're own outside whatever course you're doing. Courses are imo only good to get the foundation and starting point.
hey i am also a software engg, but want to do more projects for my resume. Is anyone interested in doing a MERN/MEAN/MEVN stack project? we can change M to any other datastore, thats fine. As long as the main backend/frontend is in js I am up for it. As to what to build, its up to you. facebook, youtube or any other clone is also fine.

The fact that you’ve said “mate” and “university” shows location. College in the United States places nearly everyone in inexpungable debt and basically promises nothing but a menial entry level job. It’s very close to useless. Nathaniel stated that he grew up in the USA. His success and flexibility are most likely a result of not starting adult life in debt from school.

Love your approach. I follow it pretty much every day when it comes to my goals in learning. Currently, I am learning about video, editing and stock footage. It's a lovely experience and the passion is key. It completely changes the way you absorb information and you approach difficulties in the process of learning. And everyone has to face them one way or another.
I also completely agree that this is the future and universities will be in big trouble in 10-20 years unless there's a significant shift in the way knowledge is delivered.

This quickly became one of my favorite channels. The quality of information is excellent. There's no rambling. Not to mention the aesthetics.
I absolutely agree with what you say here.
The most difficult part is really distinguishing between good information, and bad information. This is a skill that really comes with experience.
The thing about college (at least in some parts of Europe, specially Portugal where I'm from) is that not having a degree will greatly hinder your ability to progress in your career, regardless of your technical ability.
I can't explain the origin of this phenomenon yet, but it is reality. No college degree, and you will not get past a "team leader" kind of position (generally speaking). Of course this is focusing on the corporate or enterprise world, so this does not apply to everyone. But I can tell you I sometimes feel prejudice for saying I only have the 12th year (equivalent to what you call High School).
I want to congratulate you for this very concise, very straight to the point video.
Also, the quality of the videos are really really great, you have come a long way and should feel proud about it.
But don't sit on that accomplishment and keep improving and learning every day!
I started programming 3 years ago learning it online and by the first minute I felt so in love with it that since then I am programming almost every day. The hardest thing I learned was the full mechanics of Machine Learning. but now looking back at what I learned online so far, I can say that I’m really thankful to everybody who shares his knowledge in the internet and a little proud of myself.
I understand that you and a lot of people don’t like the college very much but it is just not what you need in life. You don’t need college to make your videos and be creative, sure. But a lot of things require it. I want to be a Data Scientist one time and I am learning and learning all the time and now I COULD work but I know that there is so much more that i can learn at a university and I understand that a lot of enterprises only hire people who have been there. Machine Lesrning is so complicated that I really look forward to university, so I can learn even more and deeply

Amazing video as always ! I love learning languages on my own . I learnt German and Norwegian on my own and I loved the journey . I was a good student at school and got into a top university for architecture , but I’m one of those people who only learns when they love a subject genuinely and so many important stuff in any major aren’t taught in schools . 80-90% of skills are learnable online though in my opinion it’s the education system that is broken (making followers instead of leader) and most professors doesn’t have process how to transfer knowledge into long term skill. Learning how to learn is a subject that must be added in school systems.
Some schools are very innovative and exciting though not everyone could afford them. But in self studies, it is more fun to pick subject you are interested in , finding a mentor that suits your learning style and manage your own time.
All your new videos just made me sure that hitting a Sub was the right decision!
