    Received the 2x as an anniversary present from my husband. I car camp 7-8 times a year and because I love hot food I needed a more serious cook system. I appreciate your review (as I have not used this yet). Your video really was helpful. And….I’ve been furiously looking for that pan! It was amazing. I usually use cast iron but I am hopeful to ever find a pan like you’re using to add to my camp collection. Thanks for a great video!

    We also have an older version and it’s great. Ours is in a trailer in Pennsylvania and gets used two weeks per year. The only problem we’ve ever had was from spider webs blocking an orifice. We recommend against using this stove on most tables. The burner heat can damage plastic tables and may discolor wood surfaces. We think of this unit as a commercial range with the need to take similar precautions. The burners put out more heat than a lot of home ranges do, so it is easy to burn stuff if you are not paying attention. But we love ours! Take care.

      Thanks for the warning. The information I relayed was what I was given by the manufacturer, bit I have not yet tried using the stove without the leg extensions. I am planning on building this into an outdoor kitchen space as soon as I receive the pizza oven accessory. Thanks for watching!

    • @BrainStormAcres
      @BrainStormAcres Před 4 lety +1

      The Upside of Downsizing we used ours on a plywood topped table that was polyurethaned. The urethane developed small bubbles. Your newer stove may have better heat shielding. We’re planning on installing a second similar unit in an outdoor kitchen. Since it will be in an outdoor installation with weatherproof surfaces the heat doesn’t concern me. FWIW, it’s pretty easy to “heat proof” the surface the unit sits on. Take care.

      @theupsideofdownsizing  Před 2 lety +1

      We too are in Arizona. And when the wind is blowing, it can be difficult getting the stove up to temperature. I ended up building a "wind break" out of dry stacked cinder blocks to protect the stove from the prevailing sw winds. I built it 6 courses high and that did the trick. Now the grill box will heat up to 500 degrees even when the wind is blowing.

    • @theupsideofdownsizing
      @theupsideofdownsizing  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for watching. The first time using it, the paint, or coating on the grates will burn off but after that it should be fine. There will be a air flow regulator that can be adjusted to get the flame to go to blue. I'm not familiar with the model with the shroud so you'll have to consulted the owners manual if you still have it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

      Still going strong. I've bought the griddle and the grill box with the hinged lid. The grill box was a great purchase, I use it almost daily. It's easy to clean because there's no burner, so pick it up, spray it down with simple green and hose it off. The griddle is nice too, but I don't use it nearly as much as I had imagined. I use a large cast iron pan much more often. Easier to clean and works just as well if not better. For others the griddle might be a great choice. It's really nice quality.

      I've never tried, but the burners will accommodate a huge pot and put out quite a bit of power. I guess the only concern might be how high you would have to lift the turkey to get in in the pot. I think dedicated turkey fryers are much lower to the ground.

    Personally, I'm not impressed with the Explorer 2 at all. I find the flame is very difficult to control, and it goes out with the slightest puff of wind. To grill a swordfish steaks, it took 5 matches and restarts. And swordfish takes only about five minutes to grill at 500 degrees! If you're grilling many things like veggies and then meats with the Grill Box, the knobs get very difficult to move up or down. So while it seems extremely appealing, please, give me my old clunky Weber back! It was reliable, temperature accurate, and very easy to to clean for TEN years.

      I haven't had the trouble you talk about keeping the stove lit. I find the stove to be most effect for us when using the accessories. We have a griddle, grill box and pizza oven. When using any of those accessories, the flame setting is perhaps not quite as important because we are able to achieve great results. I especially like the grill box!
