I loved watching this! I have a mallard couple that are in our salt water pool for the 3rd year in a row. If you are familiar with salt water pools, you don’t notice the salt when swimming even with your eyes open under water. A few weeks into pool season, they will actually stay in the pool while we are swimming! We named them Lucy & Ricky🦆🥰

what a special video again that you are sharing Janice...I love watching the hatchings....so happy the ending for the little one looks to have turned the corner and it will do ok now...but as the 'underdog' it probably will have to learn fast to be tough for it's size. It looks like such a cute little ducky. I would be tempted to make it into a 'pet'.

Thank you for sharing the sad parts too as it is important for children to learn about all aspects of life cycles, etc. Explaining it in a way they will understand for their age is key.

This brought back memories of when I was growing up and we would get a dozen hens eggs to hatch!
In those days it would take at least six months for them to get big enough to be dinner - you can get chicks now that are ready at twelve weeks, they hardly move around and just spend the day with their beaks in the food trough.

Drama, drama, drama Duck Drama. Wow I'll bet you are relieved to have your Duck drama over and done with. So many losses but some pretty cute thriving ducklings. I've never known ducks to come Breach .That is very interesting. Or Chickens for that matter. You are a trouper for sure. I did enjoy your Videoing of your experience with your hatching out the Ducks. I think that your new Incubator is at fault for the loss of so many ducklings. I'm thinking that that Incubator does not read the Humidity properly. I've had experience in the past with low moisture in the Incubator causing the chicks not to be able to hatching out. Low moisture causes problems with Hatching. I would send that lousy Incubator back to where it came from. I do believe it is defective. Looking forward to your next Video of hatching out whatever you have in mind. God Bless You all.

How sweet. I’m sorry about the loss of the others. I just started my own little chicken and duck family. I had 6 chickens and 2 ducks. However, a dog got and killed 4 of my chickens. I’m going to replace them if possible with larger chickens but the ducks are both good and the two remaining are doing great. I was devastated though that we lost 4. We are in town of a rural community so just for my husband and I the 6 chickens and two ducks are plenty and we have a huge fenced in yard. It’s just the dog getting into the duck and chicken pen that caused my Drama. I’m having to put the dog on a run when outdoors and the chickens and ducks are out in the fenced in yard. Learning how to protect them and meet their needs has been a bit of a learning curve. I have thoroughly enjoyed them. I wished though I would have known what I know now so I could have protected the other 4.

How frustrating sorry the new incubator wasn’t working well and you had a poor hatch rate! I’m glad the little one is doing well and I hope it continues to do well! It’s so hard not to help them but they usually don’t do well! My mom was a preschool teacher so she used to hatch ducks and chicks 🐣! I did embryology with 4-H and that was lots of fun!

I hatched eggs in a small incubator like that for 40 years some advice I can give you is you need to rotate the eggs every couple of days outside eggs to the center and center to the outside edges there will be cooler spots inside there in corners mostly the hatch rate is effected by the first to hatch constantly rolling the unhitched eggs around I speak from experience I was fortunate to be able to buy a new cabinet incubator a few years ago it is amazing at the time I was hatching 1500-1750 quail a month

It is so much work for them to get out of the shell!! Don't feel bad Janice, it's a well known fact that animals produce more young then they expect to make it. That way they ensure survival even with the death rate. It happens and it's natural for it to happen, you didn't do anything wrong! It's like the duck or chicken you had that hatched somrthing like 13 eggs and you took several from her because you knew it would be too many for her to raise. She had more than she thought she could raise to ensure she had several survive, it's just nature! If you didn't take several of those chicks from her I am positive that several would have come up missing from predatation or sickness or her inability to make that many chicks thrive. There is a species of hawk or eagle or owl that LETS the dominate chick kill the others because the "parents" know they can only raise one chick to be strong enough to survive, it's harsh but it is survival of the fittest and it is natural! Sometimes you can help out and sometimes you can't change natural selection. If you incubate 1 dozen eggs and 3 fail, you don't feel too bad but if you incubated 5 dozen eggs and 15 fail, then you feel bad when the failure rate is the same!

I would keep the smaller ones in a smaller cage . Ducks can be very mean and even kill other ducks. They are so cute

You should not open an incubator once hatching has begun. You sadly shrink wrapped the eggs which is why they were having such a difficult time

You may have had a better hatching rate if you didn't open the incubator so often, you messed with the humidity and the poor babies membrane got too dry, can't believe you didn't know that being homesteaders and all.
