There was once a time in the past when people thought stainless steel looked futuristic. Now the trend is more towards different colors and more unique shapes.
well, we HAD different colors with the Redbirds...
The rolling stock is very utilitarian and lacks character with every line with these stainless steel units. As a New Yorker I definitely liked the older trains growing up.
Cheaper to maintain, which makes sense in a city like New York.
I still love stainless steel. I grew up in the 60s and 70s when they were multi-colored - due to graffiti.
@@TrainsFerriesFeet this units can still be stainless steel and be painted. I just think it is more about reducing expenditures of painted cars vs none painted cars.
My favorite is the R160s that Alstom made, I love how unique the noise they make is.
The traction motor sound on that stock is 380 hz-665 hz-1290 hz…
Same
Same
Same
so you like the 142s also.
I think this is a very valid list, especially on the R179s they get a bad wrap but are actually great cars they work good and I do ADORE the seats on the R46 and R68/As and in my opinion my favorite cars are the R142As,R62/As and R46
I always viewed r160s as the all time greatest cars, they have all the best features of NTTs to date, but don’t have the reliability issues of the r179s
Same I adore the R160'S 💝💖
I always see them in videos but tbh I like SMEEs like the Redbirds and others.
I love the R68s, 46s, and 143s; I've used them so often to go to school and work.
The 68s are starting to get kids kicking down the doors, especially on the D and N trains in the last car, shit is annoying tbh. I feel like they should start putting a transit agent on cars with operator cabs to prevent door kickers.
It would cost a lot to have Transit Agents in rear cabs. I think the best course of action is to get some better locks.
I was on the 6 r62a at the back and these kids tried kicking the operator door. It got so bad i had to move to another car lol. They somehow got access to the announcement speaker
Really informative for an outsider and a rail fan from india 🇮🇳, interesting rolling stock very different from the one’s we have in Indian metro systems and the whole station/platforms are very different. In Asia be it china, india , Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong all have similar design philosophy.
Hello from USA
bro honestly your so calming to watch, I just sit and watch your videos due to either how interesting it is, or how calming it is 😂 good work tho !
I love your break down keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks, will do!
Been waiting for this. 🤟
you know what i forgot to mention asking for a vid like this glad you made it lol.
Great Video! You should rank all of the NYC Buses for your next video!
Most new train operators have difficulties operating a R68A because of it's braking system. However the trick is when coming into the station take the break and hold it until the train starts to slow down and stop then release the brake slowly until you come up to your marker. The R68A breaking system is similar to the R62's on the 3. Regardless I like operating both types of trains it gives me a challenge as a train operator.
P.S. I love letting it rip on the 3 going express on Broadway. One time I was coming in through 50th street station going towards 42nd and I hit 48 miles per hour!!
So the R68 Is Gonna Retire or the Next Few Years
Cause the The N and Q Lines Needs New Cars
Yea that armrest window seat on the manhattan bridge is everything!
Hey MysticTransit! I’ve been watching your videos all day and I have to say I love your work, bro, keep it up! I think I agree your list, although I‘m not from nowhere near NY and I have only been once so I don’t really have much of a sustained opinion. I think I just would have put the lovely R62As further up because, asides from being beautiful and for the services they serve, they definitely are built like a tank, they are also very iconic, even appearing in animated movies like Madagascar.
But fir the rest, very good tier list! I really hope you can catch the TOMC next time!
At last. I can finally rest. Thanks for making this!!
Lol ur welcome.
I remember when the R46s were BRAND NEW...
Me too. F line. Remarkably smooth and quiet trains and much different in atmosphere than anything that came before them. The same is true of the R44s but the 46s had a shock absorber on their trucks. Then the wheels started developing cracks, one of many problems they'd develop.
Thanks for the video.
I don’t know anything about trains man I just take the Q to work but I still really enjoyed this video great work man 😂
When you make these type of videos I like them because it feel like Bloopers and stuff. The way you talk and explain things is way different than the other videos in which you talk thoroughly. 😂😂😂 Love the videos though.
These videos just contain straight up talking. I don't put too much time and editing into it because it's just my thoughts, like a ramble.
Cool video. My favorite subway cars are the R62A, and the R143.
The R-46, R-68, and R-68As are great cars. They are spacious and have good amounts of seating. I truly enjoy the variety of the side and straight seats.
Even though They old but they shouldn't break down alot
With the R160 it breaks down less
I really love NTT cars since I was as teen when I went to high school I rode R160 on the J line in 2007.
Hey I believe that the R42 is godly because of how cool they were and the memories I had with them. Also that ending though
One issue: "Formers", as I understand it, are by definition, strong railfans. Railfans, no matter how extreme, don't vandalize equipment. Foamers are called that by people who work on railroads but aren't railfans and they think railfans get in the way. They don't understand the "obsession" we have with trains. Foamers are not to be confused with vandals. At worse, I think, is they may trespass on Transit property, but likely will not break in and certainly not vandalize railroad/transit property.
Perhaps someone will give me an example of what a Foamer may do that even a strong railfan wouldn't?
Amtrak foamers are global laughing stocks😊

This doesn't answer the question.
Great video. I'm a train buff myself, and my number one subway car, R160 alstorm traction motor, all day long, with the R 211 right behind it. Again great video
I like the modern trains more than most people do. I feel like a lot of people don’t think the way I do
I like modern trains as well, but there's just something about the nice cozy feeling of the older trains that pulls me towards them.
@@MysticTransit yup
Most do trust me
@@MysticTransit I feel the same about the Green Line type 7s. Also those trains are the trains I rode to one of my first Red Sox games in so I have a lot of nostalgia for them.
I agree the R-62 and R-62As. They are bright and the old roll signs are easy to read. The ability to view from the Front Window is also enjoyable. Cannot believe they are approaching 40 years old!
i give my respect fully to this man this is a god tier list
My personal favorites are The R142, R179 and R160 because they have less impact and more of them have been since ida hit their always damage units for years.
The R160 Is a Good Train Because You Can Hear the Conductor Announcement Than the R46
As a Conductor I hate the 68s. The cab heat sucks, the cabs are tight. And the 68As always slides out the station at Newkirk Plaza and sometimes North Conduit whenever they run the 68A on the Apple.
ok i'm hungry
Oh yeah I've been waiting for this one
i remember when seeing the 46's on the N and Q was an extremely rare sight
12:50 looks like a sideways middle finger!
I also have good memories of the R142A 6 train back in the very early 2000's, riding 7200's and 7300's mostly until 2018.
Not to mention at 6:45, it looks like somebody broke into that cab by opening that window :/
Yeah I Remember R142 on the 6 Before the got transferred over to the 7 line I hope the next few years the 6 line should get the R262
I know they still use R62 And R62A
on the 1 3 6 and S
That's correct.
with the r62s especially if you get a driver that likes to speed. Man they be pushing those r62s along 7th ave. also kawasaki reigning supreme as always gotta love them.
Kawasaki SPEED.
This is so entertaining, 3rd time I watch this
Can you do a tier list of retired/current Buses in the system? Im sure the RTS will always win hands down
Maybe I'll do one of the current buses in the system. Not much, considering there are only different variations of the New Flyers/Novas/Orions.
@@MysticTransit I driven the fully electric New Flyers here in Utah. I'm trying to get to the Artic New flyers we have but another depot has it.
My personal favorite is the R42. I took it the most when I was younger. Even though they had many issues, especially towards the delayed end of their service life (a few broke down on the M shuttle back in 2018), I still liked them.
Same
I’ve been so used to the R160s on the R line.
…still remember that funny time when the R and N trains switched rolling stock, from R46 to R160.
My alltime favorites? It's a tossup between the R-1/9s and R-10s. I rode on both quite a bit. I also remember when the R-32s were new. Liked them a lot, too.
Old tech my favorite is the R62a, I always take them on the 1 train going to school and home. The R46 I’ve rode them when they were on the F before, loved it’s express run on the Queens Blvd Line. New tech I gotta give it to the R160 & R143, love taking them on the F, J, and M! Nice video man, love it!👍🏽
Don't forget about the R62AS back on the Pelham 6 line.
I love all the NTTs of NYC my most favorite one is the R160A and R160B and R160B alstom
Same
I agree with this list!! Explains why the R68As get flat spots on their wheels the most often out of all the cars. Although maybe the R68s come at a close second.
As for the R142As, you mentioned a mid-life overhaul. I was thinking, what if the MTA replaced the red LEDs on the front of the train and used color LEDs like they did on the R110A Prototype Cars? Red for 7th Avenue, Green for Lexington Avenue, etc… Or, they could use the outside circle as the color LEDs and use the numbers in the middle as only white LEDs.
12:50 "I hate the shape that it just drew on this now" LMFAOO
I have multiple experiences with the E train with the sharp turn Jamaica to Suphin Blvd the E train stops on the sharp curved and it leans to the left
You ain’t lying. Just stopped for 5 minutes in the tunnel leaning hard lol
The older subway trains on the BMT were called BMT STANDARDS built from 1914 till 1922 and the last order was a small fleet of 1924. These ran on all BMT lines until 1969 and were 67 feet long.
One of my favorite jokes about Bombardier is to call them "Bombardelay". Though now that they're out of the train business that might be kicking a dead horse.
I was at the 161 street station and saw the special trains. I have taken the R46 most commonly on the R line. I rode the R62 and R62A mostly on the 1,3, 6, and Times Square Shuttle. I also at one point I took an R62A on the 7 line before they were taken off the 7 line. I would take R68 or R68As to 161 street a lot. I once took an R46 A to an R68 D train. The R142 would be seen at my home station which was 66 street Lincoln Center. I used to use the R142A on the 6 between 42 street and Lexington Avenue which was 51 street. I used to take the R160 on the N and W lines and very rarely the R. I also liked R160B. I took the R143 only one time. I haven't taken or seen an R179 yet but the traction reminds me of the M8 that I took 2 times recently and I like it. You forgot to say that the R46 as well as R68/A trains were lemons before they were overhauled. I also didn't get a good shot of the special trains moving because I only got to see them from at least 70 feet away. I was on the street and I didn't have any money for a metro card and I didn't have enough time to see it but I did get videos of R142A 7666 leading a train to New Lots Avenue at 5:05 PM and 3 minutes later at 5:08 PM I saw an R142 number 1175 leading a train to Woodlawn. Departed at 5:09 PM with 1120 at the rear. Holly crap I wrote an entire paragraph.
The R62's and the 62A's are some of the best rolling stock introduced in my lifetime... Always solid, seldomly ever had a problem riding one, they had the best air conditioning in summer of any stock when introduced back in the 80s and still seem to be holding up.
The R142As are great for 21st century cars. Probably my favorite cars next to the non converted from r142, r188s.(Though the new build r188s are nicer than the retrofit 142s, the front or back car is usually a new one... Better lighting)
The R68 is also a favorite, those were introduced at a time they were replacing some filthy, graffiti covered unreliable ancient stock from the early days of the IND. They were a breath of fresh air, especially when riding over the Manhattan bridge or to Coney Island with those big picture windows. Great trains.
The R142 has Been Holding up for a while
The 6 Needs a New Train I do miss them on the 6 line
My favorite fleet is the R62As, and the R68. Plus the R46s are the ones with the armrests.
I liked this video. My favorite train is the R142A. I wish they would bring them back on the 6 line though
Would you be willing do a tier list ranking all MTA buses?
I could do something like that in the future.
Good list, 188s are the goat. And I like the Alstom too, just for its unique sound and the fact that its the quietist propulsion of any New Tech train so far.
You young whipper snappers acrynomize everything. There was a time once, a long time ago, when no one wanted to be The Goat.
188s have the same traction motors as the Boston Green Line Type 8s
Nice video!
In my [humble] opinion, the disadvantage with nearly all of the rolling stock is that some railcars were damaged permanently by fire or derailment. New York City Transit cannot afford to lose any more rolling stock. You were thoughtful and right to mention that no one should enter transit property, [including transverses (crew cabins), and other places that are closed to the riding public. Please do not say a swear or bad word with the name of [Great] God. I type to you as a railfan and a long-time subway buff.
That F train at 20:20 is NICE!!
good job on the video
Thanks.
The Redbirds, R32s, R27s/R30s, R38s, R44s R40 Slants and Mods are always my top favorite subway cars, sadly I was never a fan of the R62s from childhood through now (although they were my Grandma's favorite subway cars, RIP). As a passenger I love the R46s because of the window seats and the warm colored interior that reminds me of Fall, but as a Cleaner I don't like cleaning it's floors because it's way too much work and fatiguing to clean at times when we're understaffed at a terminal. Sadly the R46's propulsion sounds tired and their floors are in very bad condition, they are reaching their final lives. From the New Tech trains I am 50-50 with the R143s but the R142 Bombardier, R160 Alstom and the R179s are also my favorites. The R211s my comments are pending for now til I hopefully ride it when it enters its 30 day revenue service.
Can you do every mta bus that you know of not forcing you to just asking
My favorite I think are the R142As. I really love the propotion sounds. They’re also pretty fast. When I take these units on the 4 from Franklin to a stop like Borough Hall or Bowling Green, the trip is no longer than 10-15 minutes.
Despite this, I really think that the R142As are better off with Jessica’s Announcements solely, I miss those announcements on the 4 and 6 lines. I mean yeah there are some stations and announcements on the 4 from Jessica still but not as common as before 2018/2019 when the last of the R142As on the 6 were gone and put on either the 4 or converted to R188s for the 7. While I haven’t rode the 7 too often, the R188s are pretty cool when I do ride the 7(once in a while). I just see them as upgraded R142As.
My favorite rolling stocks are: R160B (Siemens), R160A (Alstom), R62A, R46, R142A, and the R42.
R42 are retired
ik
R42 are godly
My favorite is R142A R188 family due to their Mitrac 1508C propulsion and quiet AC on the other hand R46 buckles badly on some lines like 6th ave F train.
Love the R 143 first time operating an computer train
I think the same, and that's funny because my brother said the R179 sounds like it came straight out of a horror movie 26:14
The r44 were used in all of nyc but were scrapped in 90s .except on sirt . When I was a kid I went on a school trip on the brand new r44 trains. They were so smooth riding and had aloud Bing bong chime . They also had red carpet in door ways. They were subject of a major lawsuit because of the Rockwell trucks cracking taking them out of service many times
Scrapped in 90? 2010
@@lopwr1212 began in 90s
@@lopwr1212late 90s
Have you been on the 46 as a F train back in the day ? Never had any issues riding them
Nice list honestly I’d give both R68s in C or D mainly because during high school these car were nightmares in the winter
The R188 traction motors just remind me of the MBTA Green Line type 8s so much.
R62As are godly
My favorites are (I don't list the "A" suffixes since the designs are basically the same between models with slight differences):
R44/46 (since they're essentially the same design with small differences)
R160 (with SIEMENS SITRAC propulsion)
Honorable Mentions:
R68
R142
R143
I liked the R44 more than the R46 because they kept the plexiglass where the seats at the doors are. At some point they were removedon the 46s and you had to protect yourself from getting an elbow in your face during rush hour if you sat there. I also thought the 44s transmissions and braking system was slightly less noisy.
@@rudolphguarnacci197 Maybe the 44s felt a bit faster and built a bit better. I think they were St. Louis vs. Chicago Pullman for the 46s.
The R160 Siemens units can use the LCD screens and can also change it to a function similar to Singapore MRT and add time
before when I was on the R179, the announcement pauses used to remind me of the R110B even though R110B have more pauses.
R179's are pretty good, i love the propulsion
I love the R160 library wrap or the 2nd avenue wrap
Hi mystictransit can you do a part 2 of this like you did for the subway lines
Tbh, my favorite rolling stocks are the R142A, R62A, R46 and R179
Edit: I excluded the r188 cuz its an improved r142a in terms of engines
i take the 1 train and once i was at the back, some kids around 14-15 just KICKED into the back of the train and use the intercoms. it happens a lot. I would see the back door just smack'd open in the back.
1:15 bruh I feel you 😭
The R62 and R188 trains are amazing.
I fully agree.
Interesting ranking of the different series of NYC Transit railcars. There are a number of factors that go into reliability of a subway car. Let's say the engineering/design of the car is the first (it can be modified as flaws are discovered in train service). After that you have maintenance (& you listed the shops that maintain the various R series) and parts availability - no parts = no fix. If you maintain a car (train, automobile, etc.) properly it will function as designed. If it is poorly maintained (because of sub-par mechanics) then you will have failures on the road that were not anticipated. Some shops have a dedicated workforce (Car-Inspectors) with a supportive management team & some shops have too many under-performing workers mixed in with the dedicated ones. The availability of parts is another important issue. At NYC Transit if you don't have the right part in stock you have to "borrow" it from another train car. The electronic components for the New Tech trains (R142, R160, etc.) that are repaired at the Electronics Shop can often be hit or miss. They have bench-test equipment that is suppose to determine if the controller/module was repaired to specs, but there are some faults that elude the bench-test equipment. In those cases it makes more sense to "borrow" a know good controller/module to make a repair to a train that has to go into service. In most of the Maintenance Shops the midnight shift is responsible for getting their trains ready for the next day. The mid-day shift (called the PM shift) works on the trainset that was inspected by the day shift. Their main focus is on repairing defects that were found by the day shift that could not be repaired in time, instead of the more sensible approach of helping the midnight shift have a number of trains already fixed for them. What happens is the midnight shift runs around trying to make repairs to trains that have to be Pre-Serviced (looked at to determine if there are any faults) as more trains are being brought into the train yard. It is a lop-sided system that comes out of the stone-ages! In addition to that most of the Stock Rooms close from 2AM--7AM! So you cannot simply blame a certain set of train cars when they break down. It's the workforce behind them that typically makes the difference. It is amazing that a of these train cars have lasted for so many years. Since they have not rusted out a smart Transit boss would simply modify/retrofit these cars to be more reliable. Save a lot of money that way!
I favorites are the R160s because of the interiors, traction motors, and they have useful way finding such as the next stations.
Same I love the front part of them.
17:36 Foamers: Wtf did we even do?
Conquesters: Good he didn’t mention us
Valid list, you think your gonna make another one when the R211 arrives?
Most likely, yes.
Here in Massachusetts the trains have Overhead wires and the trains are curved from front to back you don’t see foamers on top of an MBTA train
lmao I use 720p on all the videos I watch, it looks fine to me. Where would you put the R32s if they were still in service?
C tier.
The last American made train on NYCT the R 46 s
2:41 “I’ve taken them on the Aaaay, I’ve taken em on the Ceeee, taken em on the N, the Q”
Sounds remixable
Love operating the French R 68s we
The long pauses the announcements take on the R179 are similar to the R110B, which was ironically also built by Bombardier.
If you are on the A or D train to 59 Street Columbus Circle, you get to sit back as you whiz through like, 7 stations.
2:01 I had ran into 6111 the other day, with graffiti on it
The 6 hasn’t been the same since the R62A train sets came back…
I agree
The MetroCard ads on the 143s were more relevant 5 years ago than they are today lmao
fr.
I took the R142A 6 train before in 2016
Try doing bus models and retired rolling stock
R188 are just an extra car to the 142A sets on Flushing line since it’s 11 car trains
31:50 the r179 failed its testing several and the r211 is doing the exact opposite, did r160 take 12 months of testing until revenue service.
12 mo = 1 yr
R46 was my favorite from an operations stand point
Yessssssss
Also has there ever been a R44 and R46 consist mixed together in their history?
alot of these look very similar do u mind if i ask u whats the difference between something like a 62 and a 62A ?
My opinions on the rolling stock:
SMEE units:
R46 (1975-78):
I think they’re pretty nice, but they have been breaking down a couple times from what I’ve heard. They have indeed reached the end of their service life, and as sad as it’ll be to see them go, the R211’s will definitely be an improvement. Verdict: B Tier.
R62/A (1983-85; 1984-87):
They’re ok I guess. IDK, maybe I’m just not impressed with them running on the 6 again (A sets). I’m more used to seeing them on the 1, 3 and 4 than I am with the 6. I was also used to seeing them on the 7 before the R188’s came along, but, well, yeah. Maybe for the time being, before the R262’s are delivered, few of the R62A’s on the 1 and 6 can be transferred to the 4. More on that later. Verdict: B Tier (both sets)
R68/A (1986-88; 1988-89):
Personally my favorite SMEE fleet. Love the interior lighting. Really adds to the charm. Not a big fan of the breaking on the A sets though, and that’s probably why most of the A sets run mostly on the B, as the D uses only the traditional 68’s. I think when more of the R211’s are built, we might see the sets transferred from the B and D to the A, C, N, Q, and W trains, as the B and D are in need of NTT’s after all. Verdict: Godly (Traditional sets); D tier (A Sets)
NTT units:
R142 (1999-2003):
They’re pretty great, though the only few downsides are the Alstom ONIX propulsion (not a big fan of the screechy violin sound), and the unnecessarily loud HVAC. The flickering LED’s are pretty cool if I do say so myself. Hopefully during their mid-life refurbishment, the loud HVAC and Alstom ONIX motors will be replaced. Verdict: A tier.
R142A (1999-2004): When it comes to IRT rolling stock, I ADORE these trains. As a young boy, I loved riding these trains both on the 4 and 6, especially the 6 since I mostly took that line when on my way to grade school. Sadly nowadays, they’re only used on the 4, as most of the 6’s R142A’s have been transformed into R188’s in order to be used on the 7. As I said with the R62A’s, I wish to see a few of them be transferred from both the 1 and 6 to the 4 when the R262’s come along. I wish to see both the 1 and 6 use R142/A’s transferred from the 4 as well as a few R262’s. The 4 should use mostly R262’s alongside the 3. The 2 and 5 can continue using only R142’s. I hope that during the mid-life refurbishment, the trains can keep using the Bombardier MITRAC motors, because they just sound wonderful. If not, hopefully they replace it with something similar. Maybe a Siemens propulsion with the same Bm pitch. Godly, 100%.
R143 (2001-03):
Like the R142A’s, I friggin ADORE these trains. It’s kind of a shame they were only built for the L, but at least the MTA is having them run on the J/Z line as well. I love the LED display that tells you stuff about Access-A-Ride and a couple other things, as well as the little art of a city skyline at night. Now if only they can update it so it can say stuff about OMNY instead of the MetroCard. I would hate to see the little LED screen go, because the little art of the city skyline means so much to me. I’ll start a campaign to preserve to the LED screen if I have to! Verdict: Godly.
R160 (2005-10):
I really like the R160’s. They’re sleek, pretty modern, and have an awesome FIND display which I really like. They looked pretty unique and futuristic when I first rode them on the N back in 2007 (I was only 8 or 9 at the time I first rode an R160, in which I believe was an Alstom set), now they’re the norm of the system we have today. The one downside? A majority of them use the Alstom ONIX motors, in which, again, I’m not to big a fan of. However a couple few use the Siemens motors, which I truly think makes them more unique. I love the whirring noise the doors on the Alstom-built sets make, but sadly, the Kawasaki-built sets have the whirring noise silenced. At some times when filming the trains, the LED’s on the front of the train make a nice flicker effect which I think is pretty cool. I have yet to see it actually happen with my human eyes if possible. Verdict: A tier (both sets).
R188 (2011-17):
My love for the R142A’s is the same for the R188’s. I don’t want any changes with their assignments whatsoever. They were built for the 7, and the 7 only. It is not like the R143. The R143 can run on both the J/Z and L lines, and the M if possible. The R188 is to stay on the 7, and I don’t mind that. In fact, it’s perfect.👌 Verdict: Godly
R179 (2015-19):
I love how they use the same door chime synth as the R142/A’s, and their unique Bombardier AC propulsion. They had a couple hiccups in their first few years, but as of now they seem to be running just fine. My only problem is the announcements. For some reason, there’s a small pause between what line it is running on and the next stop announcement. Speaking of the next stop announcements, whenever it says “The Next Stop is”, it’s only Kathleen Campion’s voice saying the line. Why they programmed only Kathleen’s TNSI line into the train and not program in any of the ones from Catherine Cowdery, I really don’t know. It just kinda feels like an oxymoron to me. Verdict: C tier.
When F trains ran anything but R46 trains i thought i was on the wrong train.
lol.
