They are supposed to come with a peice that makes noise when the soil gets dry. A family member of mine has a bird version. Look up soil moisture meter alarm. It should bring the bird version up.

I tried the Google search "vintage ceramic plant tender"

So for the sound, if you look at the advertisement, it looks like in the front, they show the stakes you'd use to place the piece into your pot, and it looks like there's a little something electronic on it. I imagine their version of a plant tender was a moisture sensing thing, rather than a passive watering. And the sound would go off when the sensor went below a certain level of soil moisture. So nothing to do with the ceramic part, just electronics.

    • @TT-_-
      @TT-_- Před rokem +21

🤯you are right, those two thingies at the front of the ad are some kind of electronic probes! "Soil moisture meter" search shows some similar thingies with two sticks and a top part, modern and available for purchase😉

My mom has some "plant tenders". They are a moisture meter of sorts. They are meant to alert you when the soil is too dry. Some change color, some make sounds, some with shift up out of the soil. They are handy little things. I have one that is shaped as E.T. and when the moisture gets too low it will change color from brown to grey like when E.T. got sick in the movie. I've never seen this particular model but, my mom has a bird that will chirp or whistle. I don't know how it works but it does. So excited for the series to be back. Love it.

After looking closely at the catalog and looking up ceramic plant tenders, I found that what you have is the top cover of a watering sensor. So if you look at the page with the frog, in front of the tenders are two stick-like items, those are the sensor parts and the ceramics go on top of them.
    Awesome job!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️

The sound might happen if you leave a hole in the branch, bury part of the bottom in the soil and then pour in water? Like the air escaping makes a whistle sound. Sometimes when I water my big potted plant that's on a ceramic plate, it "whistles" as the water comes out at the hole at the bottom.

A plant tender is used to indicate when a plant needs watering. They are unglazed pieces of terracotta pottery that has the bottom part buried into the plant pot. When the plant is hydrated, the terracotta is dark and when it needs watering the terracotta is light x Alternatively, you can glaze the top part, leaving the bottom bit unglazed and putting a hole in that indent big enough for a houseplant watering can spout. The "plant tender" part of the name is saying that it is a "tender of plants", as in when you "tend" to something it either means that you are nurturing and caring for it, or more modernly that you usually do something in a set way. It's an old usage of the word, but you can easily find about 100 years ago phrases in conversations such as "I will go tend to the dinner/garden/children/washing", if you said "attend" instead it meant that you were at the persons service, such as "I'll attend to our guests".

  • @belug23

I've found some ceramic plant tenders on etsy and from what I can see, it's juste a watering system but there's they don't have any information about it making noise. I wouldn't be surprise that the "Dinosaure sounds" was a typo or a translation error. Too bad that the "Gone fishing" tech sheet (tech sheet 177) doesn't have any information about the plant tender.. But from what I've seen from other ceramic plant tender, the mold is missing the Cones that goes in the ground.
P.S. I'm so happy that the season 2 is now here! I was missing those relaxing moments of my life.

This mould, plant tender, requires an electronic probe that chirps when your plant is dry. These probes had different sounds depending on what animal was cast for them. I had seen something similar to the red robin and bull frog/toad. I don’t know if if you are able to purchase the probes, I would think highly unlikely, as there are so many different methods available today. But I absolutely love the idea for a ring holder or a small necklace child’s necklace stand. Keep up this beautiful and wonderful work and I -ray that your upcoming market/exhibitions are everything you desire.

If you zoom in to the bottom of the picture of the plant tenders, there are some little spikes that I believe are meant to be attached to the bottom of the frog/bird/dinosaur. They are probably battery operated and will make a sound when the ground is dry.

I was so curious, so I googled and plant tenders can be either a watering globe style, you fill it up and then stick into the plant and it waters over time, or a plant watering spike where the unglazed part of the ceramic should be porous (many seem to be made with terracotta) and fill with water that can seep into the soil. I have no idea how these adorable frog molds could be made into either? So odd! I love what you did with them, tho!

    "How do plant tenders work?
Plant tenders are easy to use, just insert the cone shape spike into the soil and fill the frog reservoir with water. The soil absorbs the water through the porous spike, just fill the reservoir when needed. Plant tenders work well to keep plants watered while you are away, can be used indoors or outdoors."

I googled “plant tender moisture alarm” and I think I found what it’s supposed to do and there’s lots of modern versions.
I have tons of houseplants and I do sometimes use a device called a moisture meter and they’re a prong that goes into the soil and it’ll show up on the display the moisture in the soil. These seem to be decorative ones you constantly leave in the soil, so the prong is always in there and instead of reading the level on a display it makes noise when it’s dropped below a certain level. I saw birds on aliexpress that sing during the day when the plant is dry and have a light/dark sensor so stop at night as well as the moisture sensor. These are definitely seem like they’re missing the electronic pieces that go with it. I wonder where you would have sourced something like that for a pottery piece like this?🤔
They’re kind of fun! I could see this if you only had a plant or two and needed to remember to water, but I’d need 100+😂

On the Gone Fishin' photo there seems to be little mechanical devises next to the tenders with long rods to push to the bottom of a flower pot. They probably are meant to go behind or underneath their matching ceramic buddy, but the ceramic part does not make the sound. Most ceramic animal sounds I've seen have to be carved a certain way from the inside.
As for what a plant tender is, it's usually something that is soaked or filled with water so the soil stays moist without having to drown your plants. They are usually some sort of ceramic spike that is not glazed on the part that enters the soil, or the top where the water is poured.

They also provide a little Cuteness to your plants! Perfect for vacation trips - also is great for feeding plants - slowly releasing food into the root system
however, as this one doesn't have a spike i feel this is designed to be a garden statue/ornament more than a traditional tender. Statues are generally either themed for a garden design or just something to brighten up a garden or pot plant :)

Love the blue frogs! Plant tenders are usually water reservoirs that can be put into pots to water them but generally have a cone shaped bottom to put into the dirt. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not sure on how the sound works

That is so helpful! So maybe would that hole I pointed out in the video, would I cut that out and then it would somehow slowly dispense water into the plant?
I actually know about the tenders you are talking about! Thank you for helping! Hopefully we can figure it out!
P.s thank you for being the first to use one of the custom emojis, its so so cute!

Further to this, I think "tender" may be a regional term - where I am from they were always called "plant minders." I don't know if that would help your search, but you never know! Good luck!

A plant tender usually helps with watering your plant as you fill it with water and it slowly drains into the soil -maybe there is a spot to remove on the frog or branch?

    1. I see it as a support, the sound may be a typo.
    2. Never saw the alien before but I do now.
    3. My favorite is the green, it seems stealthy, and would be fun to discover in a plant.
I’m glad to have a return to the Mystery Mould series.
    Cheers from the Midwest USA💜

Panamanian frogs are yellow with brown spots. I'm thinking of having that tattooed on my foot. Even if they are only decorative, they are great!

They could make good key jolders if you added a little plate to the bottom! You could paint it like the stick is coming out of a little puddle!

To make them plant tenders you can upen the whole you saw and add an unglazed hollow spike to the bottom and voila. I don't have this particular one but i do have several that are made from ceramic.

A plant tender is basically a watering spike from what I can find. There should be a hole in the branch is supposed to be an unglazed spike at the bottom. So when the soil dries out it leeches out the water from inside the plant tender

functional Plant Tenders. Simply place the bottom portion of the Tender down into the soil, fill with water and these Tenders will slowly allow the water to seep into the soil helping to keep your prized plants watered.
