Elm has been the bane of the firewood industry since its inception. I personally like to buck it up and forget about it for a few weeks or months. It seems to split better when dried out a little. I also use a fat wedge.
The dreaded elm! It's the ugly stepchild of the firewood process. The Axis does a fairly decent job since the wedge goes almost to the table and pretty much slices it all the way through. Stay safe and hydrated.
Depends on what you are splitting elm for. Bundle or campfire wood is not the best choice. Split it big to get it over with and toss it into the boiler.

The single wedge would definitely make splitting elm a lot easier.
Elm is the worst! and if you let the rounds dry then they are still stringy not as bad but then the bark comes off in full pieces. Good video!
Basswood bark cones off in sheets in log form.
The butt end of Douglas Fir is not as stringy as Elm but i also split it the same way to make it as neet as possible..
Too bad you have "west coast hardwood". Would love to see your beast take on big oak.
@thefirewooddoctor : I have some big white oak here. I am just now being able to get to it..
@DanielAtkinsFirewood can't wait to hear how you think of splitting that big oak.
That elm is no joke
I've also had elm that split cleaner than hickory. Figure that one out.
That was painful - Enjoy the journey - cheers
Elm is definitely painful to split. You should've seen the big elm round I got stuck on my wedge.

There was an elm log in that batch that split nicer than hickory! Crazy how elm works!
Yikes stringy crap!👍👍
Push it all through to quarter it up, then resplit.
Messy stuff. Almost not worth the time or effort?
