- Really? Electric log splitter you might be surprised! Today I'm testing the Split Fire 1165 on some larger firewood rounds. This little splitter performs really well splitting some elm, hickory, oak and maple.

Why is it so satisfying to sit here on a cold, January Sunday watching these guys split firewood? There is just something soothing about it.

It was nice to see you split down to smaller sizes. That is what I really needed to see. As I've already mentioned that I need this electric splitter for my wood fired pizza business. I need various sizes to control my heat with a rolling flame inside my oven dome. I mostly split Ash hardwood. I try to keep my wood clean and free from mud, dirt, paint, and moss. Don't want that inside my pizza oven. I like the four way knife for the smaller stuff. Most wood splitters are heavy-duty and built like a tank. My wood comes pre split for use with most home wood stoves. This splitter will definitely save my arms and hands from using my axe on the smaller sizes. Very good demonstration.

I bought a used electric log splitter 4 years ago for $100 bucks. I thought heck yeah 100 bucks ain't a lot. It does have a leak at the seal and leaks hydraulic fluid if it is laying down ready for a log so when not in use I lift it up for storage. It's a 5 ton Task Force and it's still going strong enough for my needs in St. Charles Missouri area.
Hard to beat that price. I was really surprised with the performance of this unit. I hope your little splitter takes care of you for a long time. Thanks for stopping by.

Great video. I’m up in Atlantic Canada, just next to eastern Maine. I have a wood furnace, so I leave my wood a bit bigger than what you are doing. Anything under 4 1/2” to 5” I burn whole. I have mainly maple, yellow and white birch and lots of softwood, fir and spruce up here. I burn the softwood in Spring and Fall and save the hardwoods for Winter. I have an electric splitter, similar in size to yours. I only have a single split head, which can easily handle any hard or soft wood up to 8-10 inches, as long as it’s not too knotted. I usually buy my kindling wood in big bundles (8 ft long) from a local cedar fence mill and then just cut into foot long pieces and store it in plastic tote to dry out over the summer. I’ve been heating my home with wood for the last 36 years. Hope to continue, as long as the Lord gives me the strength. I was 71 last August.👍🙏😍🇨🇦
Raymond sounds like you’ve got a system got everything working as it should. I use a lot of pine starting fires and to give the hardwood a jump start if needed. Hopefully you’ve got many more years in you. Take care God bless.
That Split Fire electric splitter is one solid splitter for the average home owner. Great splitter and video Ben! I am glad we don't have much elm out here in Oregon.
Truck update: hopefully done by September 20. It's been at the shop 94 days now. I have caught and relocated 3 squirrels so far.

Nothing that splitter can do that a Maul and some good old fashioned effort can do better, except enable lazy people I suppose..

They really don't.. all of these woods are 'soft' hardwoods.. put anything even remotely hard near them (Janka 3000-4000) and you start busting them, I have watched a few people around here learn that the hard way. Buy a maul, much faster, cheaper AND you get some exercise and really, if you can lift a round into a splitter, you have no excuse to not swing a maul..

I have always liked SpitFire log splitters. Electric is ok for the home. I like their big gas log splitter, 4601 I think. I wish I would have know about SpitFire before I bought my log splitter. Great products they produce!!

I have a little 5 ton electric splitter. I split all kinds of stuff with that thing, stuff I could never split by hand. It did have it's limitations, but I split about 2 cords a year with that thing. I graduated to a 25 ton County Line gas splitter which is amazing! I keep the electric one around in case I run out of kindling I can split some up real quick right next to the stove in the basement. Just keep the extension cord short and it will split well for even large rounds.
Yes I’m really impressed with the electric splitter. What does yours do with the longer extension cord? I’m can’t use this one in the barn where I wanted to due to that.
@@OGAOutdoors If the cord is too long it can’t pull enough power, it won’t split as well, and it’s probably not good for the motor. However, if you use a larger gauge heavy duty cord it may be fine. If the splitter works just as well on the cord as it does without it means you’re good to go

The electric splitter did a great job, I really thought it would struggle a lot more. Technology has come a long way.
The main issue with the electric is keeping it close to the source. A short big extension cord plugged into the house works the best. Take care, Ben.
Hi Ben - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I have run a 3hp 240volt electric Italian Thor vertical splitter for 15 years that has processed 100s of cords of Tree Service Company logs. I purchased 60 metres (65 yards) of 6mm squared HO6 cabling that operates perfectly provided the power comes from a proper ring circuit in the property and not just a low powered spur. If you operate at 110volt I believe you would need a suitably thicker cable.
@@rodneysweetnam8653 It works on 110 and does pretty well about 90 ft from the house on 12 gauge wire. The best is plugged straight into the house on a heavy 20 ft extension cord. Take care, Ben.

That splitter does pretty good. I have a County Line 22T gas splitter and been thinking about selling it and going with an electric splitter. That one has a pretty quick cycle time, but that cylinder kind of worries me that it could get bent pretty easily if a log was able to move and get it pushed off of its center line. During ram travel, it's not supported by anything, but if you notice most log splitters, the ram is usually supported in some manner. I don't know if they do that specifically to avoid bending the cylinder, though????
It does a good job for what it’s designed for. I’ve mainly just used it on smaller stuff. It’s a fun little splitter to operate. I’m not sure if the cylinder bending has been an issue. I’m sure Split Fire could help you with any questions or concerns you might have. Thanks for stopping by.
I bet that single wedge would make the elm an easy split. From what I understand about electric is that brief stop in momentum where one thinks it’s not going to split is just because the electric motor doesn’t have the rpm to build the pressure as fast. However, it does build and will split. Looks like it could handle some tough stuff. Anyway, great content as always!

Great job Ben. Do you ever have a problem with wood boring insects? If so, what do you do to correct the problem? My friends had 4 yards of mulch delivered last spring and it contained termites. I think they used some kind of special spray, but they were still concerned about the termites as well as the insecticide. Thanks. I enjoy watching your channel.
Christie yes they mainly get into pine so I don’t have a lot of that around. I think for the most part they move on as the wood dries out. If they don’t well they end up really toasty if you know what I mean.
Store split wood off the ground. This will reduce termite infestation.
I bought a 20 ton 7HP landworks splitter online since it was on sale ($540)and thought Id try a splitter. Had to assemble it, arrived damaged, and the auto return doesnt work BUT that thing is far faster than this unit, no surprise as his is lower tonnage

So I see u bought 1165 split fire long splitter. I built that and painted it too ..split fire has many makes and sizes. 2265 is I great long spitter too ..no need togo bigger.
Yes they do I have the 2265 and a 3403 on the back of my tractor.
Curious, how long a cord do you run that on? I'd have to have about 200' or so and I'm afraid it'd loose too much but that surprised the crap out of me!
Chris I ran about 90 feet of 12 gauge wire to run my pool pump. I just plug 25 ft cord into that. This is about maximum distance I tried about 150 feet on regular extension cords not going to happen. Even at the pool with the bigger wire it occasionally acts like it could use more juice. Thanks for watching hope this helps. They do make this same splitter with a gas engine.

You are Right, shocked that is is even slower than I expected when I saw "electric"
If you can lift a round, you can swing a maul, do it faster and cheaper while getting fit.
Also have the added bonus of getting an extra warm out of the wood 🤣
I’m pretty pleased with it using it on smaller stuff. I mainly use it if I have to make splits smaller for bundles. Here in Alabama I really don’t need any extra warmth from the maul. Thanks for watching and stopping by.

Some of the little bit smaller electric splitters are in the $400 price range and they still work very well unless you have 12" or larger rounds.
I’ve got a 5 ton Homelite electric splitter. It’s slow as snow but I’ve split up to 20” on it. I have to rotate the log around a bit but it will eventually split
My splitter has a honda engine on it. The gas tank is the size of a pop can and i can split for almost 2hrs on a tank.
Kevin my 2265 has a Honda engine on it and it holds 3.8 quarts according to the specs. They definitely sip the gas because I’ve split over a cord on a tank. Thanks for stopping by.
Hey Ben, I’m sold on that little mighty-mite, quite impressive. Would be interesting to see what the cost of juice would be splitting say for an hour. Don’t know how to measure the wattage use, must be a meter for that-just curious vs the gas splitter. For a quick splitting session that is great! Take care- Roll Tide!
Mike my thoughts exactly. I’m not much of the electrician type. I just know that where I want to split is too far from my house not enough juice that far away. I am a little concerned about the cost of operating the splitter because my last bill was the largest one to date but that includes the pool pump. I think it will be fine I’ve probably only ran it 4-5 hours. Have a great weekend take care, Ben.

Hi Mike & Ben - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Over here you can easily source a meter that measures volts, amps, kilowatt hours and even a capability to input unit cost , which then calculates actual cost incurred for any given activity. They cost circa $10 and I would be amazed if they aren't available in your part of the world.

That's extremely fast for an electric splitter! I'd almost be tempted to operate from the other side, just in case I accidentally hit that lever (as it's so fast). Anyone reading though, check for "cycle time" when purchasing a splitter... some are PAINFULLY slow.
Yes the little splitter is quick. Really good for the smaller stuff. Never thought about operating from the other side might give it a try.

I see the Split Fire 1165 is about three times the price of my cheapo, slow splitter. Looks like it has two speeds and automatic, load-based switchover to the slower speed - quite nice, and something I'd expect at that price. Not sold on the exposed hydraulic lines; I'm used to compact units with everything integrated into the main body/beam.
In any case it would need some modifications to be sold here in Europe as safety legislation now demands that it requires both hands to activate the piston.
BTW for speed, look into flywheel/kinetic based splitters - those are scary fast...

I've been looking at these, but most of them are SOOO short- like 12" off the ground. Not a good thing for your back.
I was just at the local deere/ stihl dealer today, drooling over the new tractors. They had 2 just like yours, and several of the 5055es. I really liked those, be great for woodhounding. TONS of ground clearance for woods work.

My electric splitter motor isnt rated for continious duty. I have to turn it on/off for each stroke of the ram.

@@OGAOutdoors Actually, I've created a cheat that is very efficient. My electric motor has a button you push to turn it on. When you let go it turns off. I simply hold it on with a clamp.
I run my power cord through a foot switch so I can run my splitter one handed to keep my other hand free to manipulate the wood. The foot switch is an on/off switch that is simple to use.
All in all I love my machine. It is a "bilt hard" splitter I got off Amazon for $175 several years ago.

Actually I used this little splitter yesterday. I split some hickory shorts I had. I like the splitter I’m just not sure I would go with the electric option again. I don’t have enough electricity at my barn to operate it. That could be resolved by running new electrical wires out there just not in my current plan. I have to use it plugged into the house or out where I ran heavy gauge wire for my swimming pool pump.

I still use my home lite electric splitter. I split about 10 cords or so a year. Love it !! I've split 20 - 24 inch rounds with no problem. As I get older I'm looking into a splitter with a log lift. 😀

@@OGAOutdoors Yeah, the homelite only makes that noise when engaged to split the wood then stops to retract, so it's not always running.
Bollocks!! I’ve owned a 5ton electric log splitter for 15years and it will split all day long. I’ve split 30-36” green oak with it no problem and ash and beech are a doddle to it !! So don’t come on here saying it can only handle up to 12”, that’s a downright lie 😎

Bad design, as I had told dad that the end of the pushing head would bend at sometime. He said NO! So when splitting hemlock, it did. So then he did redesign it the way I suggested. So then no problems after that. just a matter of time for that to happen
I guess time will tell. I mainly use this splitter for smaller things. Works well breaking down larger splits for bundles.

Not sure I’ve never split mesquite. It does work good for making kindling and splitting down the smaller rounds.

I don’t get it I got a 20ton wood splitter and it run about a cup of gas running it all day , this way you have to plug it in or use a generator that will probably burn the same amount of gas. This is stupid to me.
This splitter has an option for the gas engine as well. It’s designed to break down small and fit in someone’s garage for the homeowner with limited space that doesn’t split a lot of wood. Thanks for stopping by.
I like the idea behind using an electric splitter, but the noise it makes I don’t particularly care for. Perhaps that “squeal” is common to them all, but the thought of wearing ear protection just to use it negates the possibility of me ever using one.
Mark I agree it has its own unique sound. It has a couple options for gas engines as well. The electric has been a slight challenge because I have to use it close to the house. I’m not an electrician but I don’t have enough juice to use it where I want to. Thanks for stopping by take care, Ben.

I have a Boss 7 Ton Electric Splitter, that I’ve used for the past 3 years. Splits up to 12” rounds very well and great for making kindling. I keep it in my Man Cave shed and can split in any weather conditions. fYI, it’s 135 lbs and cost me less than $400.🪵👍
