Hidden & Dangerous 2 released on PC only days before the very first Call of Duty. It has many fans across the globe, but the series ended with this game. In this retrosepctive review, I take a look at how the game plays, its system, its good bits and its flaws, to let you know how good it is.
Hidden & Dangerous 2 is a first and third person tactical shooter that builds upon the tremendous success of Hidden & Dangerous. You lead a small squad of Allied soldiers deep behind enemy lines, to carry out secret missions during World War II.

The magic part is when I was playing HD2, I could actually feel the weather in each mission. I think that just means how capable the developers are in making the gameplays and telling the stories.

First mission H&D1? Crossing the railway bridge in Italy? Never saw a more perfect rain.
My dad has never been a gamer, but when I was a kid 20 years ago I used to watch him play the first H&D on an old monitor. When he played night levels we had to sit under a towel with the screen because we couldn't see anything otherwise. And then I'd get really nervous and get out the room and go to my mom to tell her about it. And when I'd come back I'd ask him if all the men were still alive.
No way.. that's exactly the way I used to play this game too, lol. With an old CRT monitor there were no other way to pass the first two missons and Burma :D

Back in the day they made amazing single player tactical shooters where you could actually command your own squad. Imagine.

glad people are still talking about this game. It was so fun, so much customization and variety of the missions. The North African missions were so good
One of the greatest WW2 games ever. Needs a remaster or a sequel, from the same company, on modern hardware!
finishing this on lone wolf on the hardest difficulty is one of my best gaming moments
If you want to play an awesome spiritual successor to the old CoD and MoH try out Easy Red 2! $8 and it has several campaigns, offline mode, map editor and even an ARMA style inventory. Xbox and pc I believe.
Not sure about now but it was/or is developed by one guy as well. Reminds me a lot of the old BF1942.. which I put way too much time into back in the day

Tried that game, really wasn't a fan - it fell flat.
I think that the reason most of the times you cannot loot uniforms is due to them having been shot and therefore the uniform being damaged/bloody - i think in one of the missions you either have to or are advised to loot a uniform and you have to take someone out in a particular way. Its a bit bit pedantic, but thats what they were going for.
Generally you could make all enemies surrender, you'd just have to surprise them. Most levels could have you benefit from wearing enemy uniforms.
that is the very reason, if you get an enemy to surrender you can get his uniform, but getting an enemy to surrender is a mechanic that feels very random.
I was amazed as a kid when playing H&D2 by sneaking under Tirpitz and the other fun missions. I will revisit the game now. Thanks for the reminder.

Loved this one! Think it's called tactical for a reason. Enjoyed the overview mode where you gave orders to rest of the party - like bird eye view and stuff...
Damn man you've taken me back years and years... I used to love H&D and H&D2, desperados, commandos and such kind of games!
Try Brothers In Arms. It's way simpler in gameplay, but really hardcore, especially in highest difficulty that turns off parts of HUD and checkpoints. Actually, it's simplicity of gameplay gives huge freedom of tactics. I've 41 hours in this game(maybe even 40 more if we count non-licensed versions) and I still find new tactics
Payed 3€ for this game on Amazon in 2005 and loved it! I played it many hours!
My squad was always:
1.Sniper
2.Medic
3.Stealth
4.Heavy Weapon carrier
Playing this game with only German, US and Soviet-loadout via cheatcode was also fun

another thing about the jeep with the browning machine gun or the truck with the anti-aircraft gun is that you can doire while controling the gun, you simply make all the soldiers get in and switch to directly control the soldier using the gun, now if you use the movement keys (WASD or whatever you prefer) you will drive the truck or jeep while using the gun.

this game is an absolute masterpiece. I still play it to this day. If you can get past the aging (though still quite serviceable) graphics, you are in for an absolute blast. No game quite like it so even though its old, the experience feels quite fresh. Oh btw, you can loot the uniforms as long they dont have blood on them
This game is like Commandos, mixed with Mafia, mixed with Arma (inventory and orders systems). As an Arma fan i really liked it, and its realistic aproach (you can die pretty quickly), although it's better in coop (with a mod or in the expansion), for me. It's a shame it isn't that well known or that it probably isn't that accessible nowadays. Or is it? I played it a long time ago with my brother and cousins, and it was a great experience, similar to SWAT, maybe. You can see that the developers had a heart and ambition (just like Mafia 1, whose director also made Kingdom Come: Deliverance).
EDIT: 08:19 You can regulate your speed with the mouse wheel in Zero Hour, also.
EDIT 2: 16:02 Hahahaha that woman has the same face as Sarah from Mafia 1.
EDIT 3: If the AI was your main problem, then maybe you should try the coop expansion with other people; or to play the first game with a coop mod, as i did. I mean, these kind of games, including Operation Flashpoint and Arma, are designed in a way where it's just so much better to play it with people.
You can take their uniform as long as it’s not been damaged in the fight. Surrendered enemy for instance. You can take their uniform

Loved Hidden and Dangerous 1, and Hidden and Dangerous 2. I still reinstall HD2 every once and a while and play through the main campaign and the expansion pack's. Love it.

As a Czech kid born in the 2000s i remember my grandpa showing me this game and i Played the first part for 7 years ( 2011 - 2018 ) actively about 2000H and the game is super by playing online or play at one PC a share soldiers ( When you die the other players plays ). Sadly not everyone has experienced the glory of this game and H&Đ 1

This was truly a hidden gem. Spent many hours diving into this back in the day
I played through this and it's expansion again very recently and it brought back so many fond memories. Yes it hasn't aged all that well, but it still looks pretty good and has absolutely bags of atmosphere. There are parts where you feel you are the main character in various war films. A special mention also for the music, which is absolutely epic throughout the game.
It just nails the feeling of what you'd imagine WW2 to feel like.
And to those of you who haven't seen it, check out SAS Rogue Heroes which aired here in the UK in 2022. It's the closest thing we'll ever get to H&D the series.
The first H&D was released three or four years earlier. Featured a mission inside the "Scharnhorn" barttleship while she was already sinking. I have yet to see a better mission on any wargame since.
Amazing mechanics, stiff as hell, full of open ended levels that rewarded replaying, amazing atmosphere, great sound effects.
Jank but rich and incredibly ambitious. I would fight for a HnD3.
Since I was a kid, me and my dad would play the original H&D, I still played it on 2023, and the mechanics was so simple with that game that I could never wrap my head around H&D2, because it was just "complicated" because one, English isn't my first language, and the mechanics of the game is way different, so I never got to try it to fully discover how the game worked.
But the first H&D? Now that was a banger
If you still have the original game, do you have the deluxe remaster version of that game from steam?
If you do, you should give the ultimate overhaul mod a chance.
By the way, the one drawback of the original game is that nobody ever improves their skills unlike in the sequel game.

At 16:30, when facing the enigma machine, look directly to the right and on the floor and you will see hidden hatch at the end of the room and in there is the secret code book.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory also had the scroll for movement speed. This is a cool little hidden gem that i'm pretty sure will click with me. Chur

I miss this game. So formative for my early years and I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about it.
WW2 Shooters to me were Medal of Honor series (all were great games growing up but were awkward on GameCube controller’s shape) brothers in arms (awesome games and great on PC) Red Orchestra/rising storm and Day of defeat. Hell Let Loose, Post Scriptum and Squad 44 are the most realistic and fun nowadays and allow for giant maps and 50v50 battles with tanks which are relatively realistic with loafers drivers gunners and commanders as well as other armor (light tanks, half tracks, trucks, jeeps) n artillery pieces static and deployable, fortification building and a plethora of accurate weapons and different battles.
Probably played H&D2 about 50 times, and there is always something new to discover, or a new way to approach a mission.
Uhh nice... I've been waiting for this one. Watching now.
i loved this game when i was a kid.
ill never forget about that moment when i shot my last bullet and reloading would kill me so i just dropped my gun, took the K98 a finished the guy that was running to his cover. you dont have such moments in other games and i enjoyed playing LS3D engine ones with all the clumsiness and stiffness

100% agree, what makes it more impressive, i don't know HOW< players made the multiplayer work for this one!
Great game. The same people who made this made Mafia 1 and 2, all great games.
8:55 actually that stealth meter only applies if you are wearing an enemy uniform.
Otherwise you have to rely on the number at the bottom of your profile picture we simply tells you the distance in which anatomy can see you and if he sees you, he opens fire immediately if you are wearing your British uniform still.
Or if you have something visible on you that doesn't belong while wearing an enemy uniform.
It's fitting that you didn't use the disguise in the final Norway mission because the attack dogs can recognize you instantly anyway. It must be your aftershave they smell.

I remember seeing the absolutely lazy historical distribution of weapons in the new CoD games, and remembering that this game perfectly modelled the entire Japanese arsenal for the one mission you're in Burma, I really miss that level of dedication to detail.

This game It came to mind a few days ago, early 2000s I was just a kid I have no idea how I even discovered it, I spent afternoons figuring out how to move forward on missions😅

I was growing up with this game. It was pretty much my 1st game I played in multiplayer. I love it and I wish somebody would make some kind of remake of it. But ofc with larger maps and more players per server than it was back then - to fit the today's or UE5's tech & graphical standards.
HLL despite most successful WWII shooter atm, it failed its players (many broken promises, many bad-working metas, many broken features or problems that haven't been even attempted to be fixed in many years now).
my first gamplay was hidden & dangerous fight for freedom.

as a huge fan of mafia 1 im suprised i never seen this game before
illusion software were really never into explaining things in their games lol getting through mafia 1 without any guides is a big challange i think they were always a little too ambicious and didnt realize the technology limitations of their time and just tried to do everything they can, i would love to see a game like that release now if u could play 4 man coop it would be an insane experience

this is one of the games that i dream would be remade! but
10/10 idea, 5/10 execution. I really dislike savescumming and I usually play on the most authentic difficulty in such games. However old games had such poor AI that coupled with extreme difficulty it just mean frustration. HD2 and Bia rth30/eib are the top offenders imo, while being the best games in this genre.

@@Terrydactyl Long time ago but I think it is before you start the first mission. Above the stats just double click on the name at the team selection. I used to name them like some of my buddies even watch them progress from Private up to Major. xD

The first H&D was incredibly difficult and clunky the 2nd was a lot more playable, but still clunky. Underrated game for sure.

10:35 that soldier was scripted to behave like that, the game encourages you to take his uniform. I think they might've spotted you because of carrying a british weapon as a german soldier ;)
the desert campaign honestly had generally bad level design though.
It is the best ww2 tactical shooter to date . I was hoping new games build on this base but none has successfully done so. And in my opinion call of duty is a boring repetitive game.
Nice to play as the British exclusively (with a speckling of free Czech,etc soldiers). No Americans for once. No offence.

H&D 1 and 2 are masterpieces IMO. I miss the days when Devs didn't try to inject a Z-tier narrative into every game (complete with current day social politics). H&D was all about immersing, putting you in the shoes of the operatives and experiencing grounded missions. Great stuff.
