World War 2 has a lot of first-person shooters. Some of the great, some of them bad, some of them really bad like Call of Duty. Today I am going to tell you why I think Brothers in Arms is the greatest World War 2 shooter you can play.

i wish they would make another brothers in arms. the gameplay was so crisp and realistic. I felt like I was in the movie Saving Private Ryan at some moments.
or in the series Brothers in Arms?
Me too !
In 2021 there were some vague suggestions that there's another game in development. Haven't heard from it since though
The gloominess of the normandy terrain in rainy june has never been better depicted with more or less polygons.
Rth30 and EiB was two masterpeices.
@@Nyllsor while when I first played the series I liked Hell's Highway best, over time I've come to like the first two games more for their graphics- and artstyles. They just feel more immersive and gritty
One of the things that stuck with me was how your squadmates reacted when you died. They would shout and scream your name with genuine shock and desperation in their voices - all while the firefight countinues and the rain pours down.
And I died alot lol
Hells highway actually stuck with me how realistic The damage inflicted on enemies is like when you use high caliber rifles from up close their limbs will fly off
'Zoom, zoom, close-up, slow-mo-style'. Called the Action Cam. It can be turned off in the menu to speed things up. Cheers.
Other than limbs don't fly off with most of the weapons used by you in the game.
Correct. Graphic dismemberment seems random. @@Kilo_Charlie626
I remember getting this game for Christmas as an 11 year old. I was expecting something akin to MoH or CoD. First slow motion camera shot of enemies limbs flying off let me know I was in for something different.
How is that realistic? Thats not realistic at all.
30-06
8mm M
7.62x54R
NONE of these rounds will remove a limb via a limb shot. I have no idea what your shooting experience or knowledge is, but you have almost ZERO internal ballistics knowledge and it shows big time
Hidden and Dangerous 2 is also great memorable experience that I would recommend everybody
What a forgotten game.
Definitely worth the effort of remaking if stealth and infiltration or higher priorities then guns blazing.
By the way, have you tried the overhaul mod for the first Hidden and dangerous game? A friend of mine and I spent years designing and testing that mod.
Jacob did the modding and I did the beta testing. He still alters it to this day.
The gameplay was janky and I never finished it.
God I love H&D2. Doing SAS raids whilst having to do actual tactics is cool.
This section over here is pure Gold 🥇🪙- Mentioned HD2 ! Holy Moly !
A series that while broken, woukd have been an all time classic if it only had the budget.
I remember a mission in this game where you had to take out the German mortar team. It was so hard lol. Still get flashbacks all these years later. I do think it was on highest difficulty though.
Replaying the games now, its nice to play an acual hard game where you might have to restart the entire mission. Ofcourse i dont accept any casualties.
OH and did you know the first 2 games are on sale on steam now, 4EUR for both games!
Im new to pc gaming and cant find these games in the steam store @@Nyllsor
This game gave you PTSD lol
Holy crap yeah man!! I remember being stuck with low health all alone, having to charge towards enemy mortar positions. All this while playing on my PSP1.
I remember that I restarted the whole mission a quite lot. These were the days
I really liked this game a lot, I’m surprised there was nothing else like it made. Hell let loose let’s me relive some of these awesome flanking moments!
Ikr, the gunfights in brothers in arms games are extremely realistic in their own way. If you notice, it took WAYS a lot of ammunition in order to eliminate a single German two men group, which is very realistic compared to real life gunfights. Sometimes when you shoot at a soldier while they are not yet suppressed, there's gonna be a chance he is going to execute a duck animation to avoid the shot, giving the feeling that these are the real human beings, not machines.
@@sussyb1471 İ played the second game in hard diffucuilty and i had to empty the magazine to kill 1 guy
what, HLL have nothing to do with this game playstyle
@@Luis-bo2uj HLL is just Unreal Tournament in WW2 with railguns masked as M1 Garands and MG42.
Leggetts death is the most memorable thing ive ever seen in a video game
I love how like its not confirmed to be paranormal, you could just be losing your shit, and your squad by chance dies from holding the pistol, but it also could be cursed inlore, it makes it feel more real because it genuinely makes you wonder if its a cursed handgun or not.
YES! The beauty of using your squad to suppress the enemy while you took your assault element along the flanks. The 30 cal. keeping their heads down while it slowly chews up their cover. And then to finish the foe off you spring on them with the assault team they panic only to be cut down by the mg team when they break cover. It is so beautiful, the sound design is the greatest I've ever experienced.
Yes, the sound is still very good today after 20 years.
Brothers in Arms is the only World War 2 shooter that understood that the "meta" of gunfights and tactics in the Second World de-emphasized precision and individual heroism. Rather, the "meta" of World War 2 was very much the need to apply overwhelming heavy firepower on area targets and follow up with mass assaults by large combined-arms formations. Not 3 or 4 guys. If you sent less than a Company to capture an objective, you weren't doing it right. It's not that individual achievement or precision was impossible before digital technology-but these things were not the norm-they were the exception.
Only Brothers in Arms managed a "mode" or a configuration of gameplay that illustrated these concepts-and that's unfortunately probably why it's been forgotten. Because its shooter mechanics totally downplay individual empowerment and underline the *scale* of fighting in the biggest armed conflict in history.
Terry nailed it on this review. Brothers In Arms is the WWII video game standard that I didn't know I had when assessing other WWII games.
Honestly since playing the Brothers in Arms series no other WWII games have truly been as good to me.
Using actual tactics whilst having a story that's clearly heavily inspired by Band of Brothers is simply a brilliant experience.
Fan Fact. In road to Hill 30 when you give orders to Fire Team Matthew commands Allen once and then Garnett, and back and forth!
"Remember boys. Gimme three days and three nights of hard fightin, and you will be relieved!"
"What is the damn hold up Captain Sobel?!"😂
"flies spread disease... so keep yours closed!"
@@Please_allow_me "a fence sir"
The 3rd person animations in this game are some of the best I've ever seen. The K98 is butter smooth.
Hell's Highway is one of the best games I rented from Blockbuster
Same here. Medal of honor airborne too. Miss blockbuster man :(
This remains the series that I most want to see get a remake / remaster / sequel
so many good memories coming home after middle school and firing those bad boys up. I would love to see another entry in the series.
Hells Highway was a great cover based shooter. Good story, great gameplay. The sanetorium level was very chilling if im remembering the game correctly.
Was shattered when they announced the 4th game.
Played all of these on PS2/3 hundreds of times, these are my childhood. I have all 3 of them now on steam and still play them once or twice a year. I wish they would have continued this series.
When it comes to shooter games, I never quite enjoy the 'superhero' trope. The thing I love the most, is when you feel like you are just another soldier in a bigger war. You're not trying to win the war, you are trying to survive it.
Older Call of Duty games still gave that feeling sometimes. I remember and I don't know if it was COD 1 or COD 2, there was a section in I think Stalingrad, where you started a certain section with 1 or 2 friendly soldiers and had to go through quite a few streets to get to the next bigger battle. The section was a few minutes long, probably not even lasting 5 minutes.
But the friendly soldiers if they died, they were gone and you were on your own.
I always loved trying to keep the alive, not by leaving them behind and clearing the level on my own, but by genuinely pretending to be working together with them. They weren't special soldiers, just carrying auto-generated names. But it felt like we were in this mess together.
Brother in arms truly did it better than any other game. I've been wishin for a part 4 for a long time. Though I'm not so sure if newer generation has the patience for games like Brothers in Arms anymore. Or they just want over the top action.
Holy shit I think I remember exactly which cod mission ur talking about and you could not have described it any better
Man I need more people to know about this BiA......in all of WW2 games I played this game really carved its place from my childhood......
Even replaying this to this day I still never get bored playing this
Band of Brothers just hits different....
One thing Terry, you kept referring to Baker company. Understandable with Matt's name but they were part of 502nd's Fox company in the first two games and the 101st's Recon platoon in Hell's Highway :)
I had the pleasure to work on a project that payed homage to this game. The mood that the soundtrack and the careful attention to detail creates around this IP is just wonderful. Best WW2 game series hands down.
We need a studio to bring this series back with a new group of brothers
Perhaps North Africa campaign could be good or the Pacific
Eastern Front
Brothers and Arms
"Meatgrinder"
No no. We need them to finish the main story first. Bastogne it is
I remember watching the "Inglorious Brothers In Arms" and just thinking WTAF!
Very sad.
I think Handy Pitchfork must have gone off the rails and lost the plot.
The only thing remotely close to BIA was Hidden and Dangerous 2.
However, Brothers In Arms is the benchmark for realistic World War 2 combat gameplay.
(edit:typo)
100% agree with you Terry, the best modern ww2 series of its time! Story, tactics, atmosphere had it all.
09:35 FYI each mission was based on real 101st airborne engagements, with the game developers using aerial reconnaissance photos, after-action reports, and location scouting in France to recreate historical operations down to the last detail. Every mission in the game was based on real life including the geography, which was a big selling point of the game upon release. Surprised you missed this major detail.
God i miss this series. Thank you for giving it some love
These were the best years to work at gearbox all the historic extras and seeing the development team being able to actually go to these location in france also troy baker did a good job voicing baker
thank you for making this video.. i played all of these when they first came out and loved them..still have the discs to this day.. but then over time i forgot about them.. then after watching this, i remembered every part, aspect, and line from them and how important they were and how they made me feel.. i started yelling the lines when they came on screen in your video.. i felt like i missed these characters and stories..
I remember playing this game when i was in middle school it was so much fun and it was a great introduction to the PS3 with amazing visuals.I did not know what quality game i played till i watched this video. Thank you so much for unlocking some of my core memories man.
I always loved how at the beginning of RTH30 when Mac and Baker link up, they hear a noise of someone running behind a hedgerow, and we find out in EIB that it was Red and Doyle
Hells Highway slowmow killcam was so epic to me at the time
Terry this is one of the best vids I've seen in a while. Thanks for putting this together. I enjoyed watching it.
Thanks for making this video, seems like these game have been erased from memory and completely forgotten but for me it was one of the most unique experiences I've ever had with a shooter and something that really left a mark. I'm still waiting the sequel to this great story
I will say that Call of Duty 2: Big Red One did a similar good job of making you feel as part of the World War 2. You start out as nothing more than a private but part of a squad of what feel like real people. Only your squad leader is the one set up to die/no longer be around due to the prologue being in the "future" when you are now the squad leader. The deaths of the others feel impactful and not really seen coming, and as replacements come in you don't really care to know the new guys. Yeah, it still plays like a Call of Duty, but the writing was pretty good for the time and I think it overall holds up even now.
ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES OF ALL TIME WITH A TRUE EMPHASIS ON FIRE AND MOVEMENT. I don't know if Hell Let Looses suppression is broken or intentionally nerfed but in recent videos I watched the suppression in HLL no longer makes enemy aim inaccurate. Nor does it produce blur or screenshake half the time if the bullets land in the dirt next to you or on walls/surfaces next to you. They really need to fix that because having a fire element to suppress and an assault element to move is the most fundamental thing a squad based ww2 shooter or any shooter needs. But especially a tactical shooter like HLL. EDIT - AND WTF WAS THAT BROTHERS IN ARMS 4 BS.
Hell's Highway was an incredible game, and the Multiplayer was the only experience that peeled me away from Gears & CoD for a good while. Was a bit laggy here and there but when it was behaving it felt super rewarding to do well.
You never even mentioned the situational awareness mode! It is a huge and unique part of the series.
I'm happy to see that this wonderful series is not yet forgotten!
I still play hells highway daily the series is so good.a lot of people complain it feels clunky but it just adds to it for me. been waiting on the snow for 17 years now !!!
I miss this series. I miss the multiplayer community I was part of with Hell’s Highway. Played Hell’s Highway multiplayer for a solid 2 years and then everyone just disappeared, which sucks. A very unique game series but I understand why Ubisoft didn’t continue this series. In the age of live service and cash grabbing, the final game couldn’t be possible. These games were meticulously made with passion and historical research. You really don’t see this level of dedication anymore in AAA gaming.
I have to agree i loved this game so much played it over and over such a shame we didnt get another one of these
As a former infantryman I've always enjoyed this series for it's accurate battle tactics. It kind of falls apart somewhat as you exist between the two fireteams, floating around trying to direct them. But that's only when the game sets up multiple bounds and expects you to move through them linearly. In reality fireteams each have a commander with a brain (hopefully).
The details were amazing. Remember getting blown back by a mortar and thought I was dead. But just had dirt all over me and ringing in my ears and I got back up and resumed fighting
I had forgotten about how much I loved this series.. made me reinstall it, I like that you didnt mention the curse of the pistol, I always found that a bit weird
Was in a mohaa clan in my teens. I'm actually a PC player at heart but don't tell anyone that Haha. I played the first brothers in arms but that was it. Great game. Thanks for reminding me what happened and showing the stuff after Terry. Loved the Team America gif, actually lolled.
I remember that people complained about the first game because of the fact they added real gun sway while aiming down sights that would depend on if you just stopped running or in a crouched position.
The action in the game isn't over-top like everything else and was more about the story and characters.
And you had to think when it came to controlling your squad in combat.
This is one of myball time favorite games. Thank you for giving it the recognition it deserves
I've been waiting for a Brothers in Arms sequel or at least a remastered version of the 1st and 2nd game; the last game was released 16 years ago...
Full Spectrum Warrior is the one that reminded me most of BIA, but that didn't have the layer of Band of Brothers type relationships. Brilliant games.
I thought so too, I loved those games back in the day. Really made you feel like you were part of an actual squad, rather than just going full Rambo like other shooters make you be.
I remember as a kid playing road to hill 30th demo.
And the language barrier, smol kid bren and difficulty really humbled me hard.
Since i guess i developed a love for tactics and slow pace gameplay
I only really played earned in blood, but Red is my favourite character. I loved commanding every single one of my squad members. Even kinda liked Doyle, despite having to save him and the 82nd numerous times. I permanently lost a squad member in my earlier play throughs and really felt bad about it.
There is no game where I was so much connected with my squad mates, I remember that I even cried when Allan and Garnett died in BiA hill 30.
Man this game just randomly popped in my head 2 days ago and I thought I was the only one who remembered it and here you are in my CZcams
I always loved this series as a kid. To me it felt like a playable band of brothers and especially a child I loved it so much. I met to find them all again and replay.
Hell's highway still looks great today. And plays as great too.
Such a great game. I remember just how epic it got when you were pinned down.
I bought it fot $5 in a marketplace, its a great game, and the story is god, baler having schizoid like mental health problems is something that you dont see often in a war story
I loved Hells highway, I remember looking thru the net to see if there was a button code you could push to mount that sexy 17 inch bayonet you carry on your pack the whole game, was such a tease lol but no melee so ig.
I remember when i was 15 at release day after school me and ny friends rushed to the store to buy it. I really hyped this game as it was such a good game for ww2 lover especially with the airborne
I always enjoyed this series a lot. Especially Earned in Blood on Xbox back in the day. I really love the hybrid FPS and TPS style those games had. It's really awesome. Rainbow Six Vegas, Quantum of Solace and Hell's Highway had awesome system.
The action RPG Deus Ex: Human Revolution used the "hybrid" style for its combat system as well.
In hells highway the enemy would try the 4 F,s on you if you werent fast enough
. Very cool game
Really great job summarizing this entire series and highlighting all the things that separated it from the glut of all the other WW2 FPS games. Really wish this series would get rebooted. I'd even be happy if they did the exact same things with other eras, ie Vietnam or Afghanistan/Iraq. Just please don't do what they were planning to do with the over the top 4th entry that never got released.
i dont remember anything about MOH and COD games apart from the first dday mission in one of them, but i remember the characters , story, missions, and can still remember the voices. Thats how much more it felt like a real world. Fantastic game
Liked the whole series but I got my start on the Xbox version of Road to Hill 30. I still have my sealed Matthew Baker figurine from the Hells Highway limited edition, back when pre purchasing actually got you something tangible.
Brothers in arms was always a fantastic series. I think the original call of duty and united offensive were also brilliant for their time.
I would absolutely love to see them release another Brothers in arms though
The multiplayer for this was actually pretty fun, as i recall. There was mission oriented gameplay. One that sticks out is one side having to destroy either AAA guns or Artillery positions and the other side defending it on a time limit. You would set the explosives and then have to protect the area long enough for them to go off. The back and forth gameplay with each person controlling a squad of ai was pretty ahead of its time, to be honest. I think something like this could work really well today if done right.
They should end this saga at Bulge.
Man, I really love this geme so much since it have been released.
I really wish they hadnt went with the dramatic route as much as they did in HH. Road to Hill 30 had so much extra historical content and a grittier feeling to me. However, I love HH as well. Great game and I lived the historical aspects of it as well
Brothers in Arms was in fact inspired by Band of Brothers. I love that about the game series and was debating revisiting the games hoping they still hold up.
Debating? Revisiting? Yes, the entertainment value still holds up. These games are not for the impatient. Understand controls and your 'golden'. Cheers.
Howdy Terrydactyl! Looks like CZcams wanted Brothers in Arms to come back into the zeitgeist, both our videos resonated with so many people! Wishing you all the best, and hope all is well! Great video!!
Another improvement I've noticed in "Earned in Blood" is that unlike Hill 30, you can no longer just use a grenade inside a tank, you have to kill the hatch soldier before that is possible. If "Brothers in Arms 4" had happened, I can picture a new mechanic, where they player has a temperature meter which forces them to constantly take cover behind objects in order to avoid body temperature dropping to danger level kind of like Tomb Raider 3 in the Antarctic levels.
Hello highway was the first war game I've played, my mind was blown on my first enemy Kia, I threw a grenade and everything was in slow motion and the guys leg blew off, it was dope, still fond of that memory I wish I could get the same feeling like the first time again
There was also a version available for the psp too, mainly a mixture of missions from the first two games ( but I could be mistaken about that last bit ).
I would give anything for another Brothers in Arms. It has so much potential. I still feel they could get another 3 games out of the current story. It's probably my top 3 of all time games. Every once in a while I think about the gameplay that it could hold with modern technology, it gets me excited like no other game.
I always wanted a sequel where you commanded a platoon. I mean, squads don't really operate independently haha, ya know? It made sense immediately after the Normandy airdrop before everyone regroups but after that, it's silly. I don't think they're sending single squad or two out to accomplish missions. Just not capable enough. And it'd be SO cool to command 6-8 (depending on size they did if 4 or 8 or 10 men) of an entire platoon
Would be interesting, maybe like a half-RTS half-FPS style where you go overhead view and give squads orders, while being able to switch back to FPS mode whenever you want
I remembered playing most of this game titles in ps2 as a kid back in the day and i loved it ,spend hours and replaying the game because i love it so much . 😊
In the third brothers of arm game, my favorite part was when you got that tommy gun and you could use three weapons in there
I've started loving history with BIA RTH30 when I played It on my old PS2. I was 11 yo. I'm still fu*king waiting for that new chapter. Best Series of games ever.
I miss games like brothers in arms. Bia, ghost recon, and rainbow six. I loved being able to command the team but also be a shooter too. Not many of these exist anymore. Or in the fashion it used to be. Brothers in arms was great because it really did emphasize how much you needed to focus on tactics.
That itch is thankfully being scratched nowadays by games such as Ready or Not. But yeah, the loss of most Tactical Shooter games was a true example of how bad the overcorporatisation of gaming was.
You should try Squad44, it’s a multiplayer milsim on PC that is the most realistic WW2 fps of all time, it lets you do everything from squad lead, to logistics, tank operator, to platoon leader .
I didn't understand BIA when I got the first game in 2005, but after coming back to it a bit later, I was enthralled. I must have played each game at least 3-4 times over. Randy Pitchford really went off the rails doing that to BIA 4... And it's such a bummer they don't work on modern operating systems.
I absolutely loved this game, planning your mission taking your time, there hasn’t been any other game that has come close to it.
I remember playing Brothers in arms: Road to Hill 30 multiplayer back then with friends and it was really interesting gameplay because it was the same as in the single player campaings that you lead the small team etc.
Brothers in Arms and Brothers in Arms 2 are definitely the standard for ww2 infantry combat sims. Played it so much as a kid
Completely forgot about this game... Wow. I played it a lot and absolutely loved it.
Great video - keep doing content like this.
Totally loved this series, been waiting to long for another game😔
I never liked how they changed the third person and the way health works in Hells Highway
Crap, you got me reinstalling Road to Hill 30. Mission accomplished!
EDIT: And the mashup of Team America's puking scene with the Furious Four trailer couldn't have been more perfect. Ditto for the "STELF" gag.
I was so fortunate to grow up playing this trilogy one of my favorites and imo all time greatest, I wish they could get a remaster instead of games that came out less than 10 years ago 😢
Thanks for this video. I am big fan of the series. Regarding similar squad-based gameplay games. I guess you could look at games like: Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Spec ops: The Line and Mass Effect
The memory that sticks with me was the first time i threw a grenade and heard the awesome 'crack' as it exploded, i remember me and my mate looking at each other in awe 😂
Love this game. can still hear baker shouting "Corian GET THE LEAD OUT" !!!
Cant agree more...allthough MoH Frontline, CoD1 and CoD2 are amazing...BiA series is totally amazing with the whole approach of telling the story...i hope there will be news so on for the be at game.. Its supposed to be under development already
I played the series in 2015-2016, and i enjoyed it more than i liked the OG COD trilogy (that literally everyone forgets about in "Which COD is best" videos and such) they were good games, Finest Hour is STILL my favorite COD, but Brothers in arms tells such a compelling story, and its gameplay are really good for their time. It has CHARACTERS not just useless NPCs there to not make you feel alone
I still remember the last time I saw the game disc for hell highway. It was in a black (no cover for movie) CD case. It was accidentally brought with us travelling. I think somehow that’s how it was lost. I don’t why I still remember that particular memory. Wish I could play it again. Little off topic. I just don’t understand why it was in that case and not in the game case. I am pretty sure we still have the case somewhere in the house. I’ve always hoped it would one day reappear. It never did. I still have some memories playing this game.
My friend you are absolutely %100 correct, I agree with everything you say because I've experienced it myself the bonds and connections you make are real life well the best you get compared to cod moh if anyone reading this has not played brothers plz crack on
Great video mate, I love BiA to death and really hope for a sequel!
Full spectrum Warrior was a similar team leader based tactical shooter. Really good!
