  • Byland Abbey is a ruined abbey in North Yorkshire, England in the North York Moors National Park. It was made a Cistercian Abbey in 1147. The design of the church was one of the most elaborate attempted for a Cistercian Abbey at that time. There are standout decorative 13th century floor tiles all around the ruins. The large, imposing ruins still give an idea what life was life for the monks and lay brothers that lived at the abbey.
It is now an English Heritage site and well worth a visit. The volunteers on site are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful too.

These ruins were more impressive than I expected, not sure why I thought it would be a small abbey. Most ruins had the stone removed to make other buildings in the area but I'm not sure about this one. I was in love with those tiles! I'd never seen anything like them. Thanks so much for watching, hope you two are having a good week!

I stopped here briefly when I was a child and I've been having a recurring dream about it ever since! :)

Oh wow, that is strange! My recurring dreams are usually about flying. I hope the dreams are pleasant and not scary. Thanks so much for watching.

Oh flying dreams are the absolute best! Yes, very positive. In my dream the abbey is restored and I am walking along with many other people, down a vast corridor with bright sunlight shining in through the windows. Surrounding the abbey are hedgerows to mark the boundary and for some reason I know that no evil person can cross past it, so I feel safe and protected 🩷

These ruins are amazing to see. The tiles that remain look lovely. Even though it is in ruins, what is left looks well preserved. I can't imagine many buildings and tile floors being built today still being around so many centuries from now. I am glad you showed the picture of what the abbey is believed to have looked like in the past because I was wondering what it would have looked like since so much is missing. Thanks for another fascinating tour of a cool historical site!

When we decided what to see in the area, I thought this would be small for some reason. I was so wrong! There was so much more there than I expected, especially the floor tiles. I loved those. I always appreciate it when they have drawings of what it would have looked like so you can see how impressive it was. Thanks so much for watching!

Stunning. However, I believe it was attacked mainly by Scots in the 12th C, Henry VIII was a cpl hundred years later, but I've only picked this up recently so could be wrong.

You are correct, the Scots got there first, then things like the black death saw the monk's numbers decline drastically, then Henry VII came along! It didn't have a lot of luck during the last few centuries of its existence. Thank you for pointing that out. After the Scots and the black death, there were only 11 to 25 monks there until it was closed in 1538. (I love my history but cheated by reading the Byland Abbey page on English Heritage.)
