Stam Fine looks at JJ Abrams' big budget movie version of Star Trek, starring Chris Pine as James T Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Mr Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Simon Pegg as Scotty. It's big and flashy, isn't afraid to completely reshape the Trek universe, or something.

Yes! When JJ was about to go on the star wars, the world said "JJ, back away from the lens flare!!!"
The only thing that really stands out as sloppy for me is Kirk becoming captain in a matter of a few days. It would have been more realistic if they (in-universe characters like the Admirals) just allowed him temporary command because of his initiative, but they (writers) didn't actually _think_ in that regard.
Spock tried really, really hard to save the Romulan homeworld, but he failed despite his best efforts. Nero should be sad but grateful, but instead he goes on a multi-decade revenge spree to destroy the Vulcan homeworld. Yeah, that makes sense. Good one, J.J.
When Nero went back in time why didn't he just go home and warn the Romulans of what was to come?
To be fair, Kurtzman and Orci wrote the script. Kurtzman and Orci are hacks. They ruined Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers, two franchises aimed at children. If they couldn't get two children's franchises right, they should have never been given the reins of Star Trek.
I just can't get past the inconsistencies of the plot. Kirk becomes a captain before graduating, Nero is a miner but somehow he turns his civilian ship into an unstoppable juggernaut that defeats the assembled might of Starfleet, Nero going into a rampage AFTER capturing Spock, his unclear motivations to hate Spock... The list goes on and on. Sorry, the movie is lots of running around blowing things up and busting the FX budget. But it's truly abominable.

My memory...I had to actually think about who the heck Dr. Benjamin Spock was - good one!
I had a little hope for JJ Abrams after this, until I saw Into Darkness.
After that, I knew the Star Wars sequel trilogy would be awful as soon as the writer/director was announced.
Simon Pegg's Scotty isn't "Glaswegian." He's all the cities/33 counties of Scotland at once.
And Jimmy Doohan was Canadian, so ditto.
I kinda like all trek films equally I think. With the exception of wrath of khan which is special.
Great review of an exciting but middling movie. I'm as old-school as you might guess from my thumbnail, when it comes to ST. TOS, close second DS9, NG, Ent, Voyager in that order. I liked your comments and observations.
JJ Abrams just ran out of things to write about so he just reworked the Wraith of Khan movie with a few changes plus some more spectacle.
I really wanted a Dr McCoy spin-off. Urban is great.
Urban is wasted in this. Most Trek Doctor characters are either dull, pompous, annoying or all of the above. Except McCoy. And Urban made a good McCoy. Because, he was the real McCoy.
I thought Urban was bad. He looks like McCoy, like Kelley. But he had to play McCoy the way that Kelley played him. And he didn't feel comfortable doing McCoy's accent.
Some short stories surrounding MCCoy would be nice. But he's a doxtor. How much trekkie story telling he could gwt Ofg the ship is beyond me
I thought Urban catured his accent, intonation and gruff demeanour perfectly. He was the only character true to the original series, though Spock comes close

It's like the movie was written with them not figuring out how the crew got into their iconic positions and just forced it to work. It actually doesn't work.
George Kirk senior was lost and considered killed in action in the regular Trek timeline as well.
He was a scientist if I remember correctly and Sam Kirk was JTK's brother, killed by alien parasites
JJA came to ST from "Lost"...
I know there's so many differences from the original timeline that its pointless to mention just one, but wasn't Spock already an ship crew member when Kirk was still just a cadet?

@8:06 I'm on a different page. I don't like the film. I did like Karl Urbans McCoy pretty well, and Quintos Spock was OK. But JJ should have been an 80s music video director or something. His "movies" are insufferable. Shit man, even Michael Bay movies rely less on contrivance and coincidence.
I still consider it one of the worst movies ever made and I'll never sit through it again.
I did not like this movie or its sequel--but I thought the third one, Beyond, had its moments, third-act trouble aside. It finally felt a bit like Star Trek, though somehow they needed to blow up the Enterprise to achieve that. Sadly that one flopped and killed the series.
In this one, the best thing is Karl Urban as Bones.
The third one BEYOND was the worst. It was really bad. Motorcycles and playing Beastie Boys? AWFUL.
