Kirk (Chris Pine) accuses Spock (Zachary Quinto) of not caring about the death of his mother in order to provoke him to anger.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mission: Impossible III director and Alias creator J.J. Abrams resurrects the classic science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry with this feature film that embraces the rich history of the influential television and film series while also exploring some uncharted territory. Heroes star Zachary Quinto assumes the role of the Federation Starfleet lieutenant and Vulcan made famous in the original series by Leonard Nimoy (who also appears in an older incarnation of his original role), Spock, with Anton Yelchin stepping into the role of USS Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana assuming the role of communications officer Uhura, Simon Pegg keeping the ship in top shape as chief engineer Montgomery Scott (aka "Scotty"), and Eric Bana tormenting the benevolent space explorers as the villainous Nero. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle co-star John Cho also boards the Enterprise as Hikaru Sulu, with Chris Pine and Karl Urban assuming the legendary roles of Captain Kirk and Leonard "Bones" McCoy, respectively.

What people forget about Vulcans is that they're aren't unemotional. They're actually intensely, destructively emotional, which is why they've adopted a philosophy of keeping their feelings under tight control. When that control breaks, it breaks hard.

That's why no one tries to stop him physically: he could easily overpower them. Savek did the right thing to wait it out a bit because he could see when Spock was not able to listen until the right moment. I'm sure he would have done the nerve pinch on his own son if he had to.

The older Spock told Kirk he needed to make the younger Spock feel and express his emotions at the loss of his planet and his mother, because Spock due to his logical nature and by the book approach was not going to do what was necessary to stop the Romulans whereas Kirk was more willing to throw out logic, damn the rules and do what is necessary rather than by the book and be more likely to save the Earth.

I swear in this scene, Pine transforms into Shatner. The tonal patterns, the mannerisms, everything; the casting folks for this movie must have been geniuses or something. Every major character in the reboot retains the mannerisms they had in the original series while at the same time being slightly different (especially McCoy and Scotty; Kelley and Doohan would be proud of Urban and Pegg's portrayals, I'm sure of it).

He did fall in love with a human woman. They had their problems, but Amanda would often explain things to him. He didn't often get it, but she always turned out right when it came to emotions. Sarek is old enough to know how Vulcans had treated humans in the early days of their alliance (he was born 10 years after NX-Enterprise's adventures ended), which may have been a factor since he was a first-generation Vulcan to grow up with Vulcans and Humans as friends.

This is just my opinion, but to me Kirk is Spock's "human side" and that is the reason why Spock disliked Kirk so much; because Spock is in a constant battle with his human half and when his father Sarek tells him that he indeed loved Spock's mother was when Spock was truly able to stop struggling. Again, this is just MY opinion.

This scene breaks my heart every single time I see it.
Poor Spock, I cant imagine the amount of guilt, self-loathing, anger, and possibly even survivors guilt he was carrying at that moment.
From not being able to save his mother, his guilt in being the few vulcans survived and probably deep down wishing that someone else should have been taken. Not his mother.
Self-loathing and doubt of his ability to 'rule' in the face of something so personal. All the while he lost control of his anger, abandoned all logic, and resorted to severe physical violence.
Honestly, after all the 'transgressions' he committed I believe the hardest part for him was knowing that he lost control in front of his entire crew, but worse off the fact that Sarek witnessed the entire thing.

    • @girl1213
      @girl1213 Před 10 měsíci +5

The problem is he's been ignoring that he has to face his feelings and Sarek has a realization that his wife *warned* him *years* ago that something like this could happen.
See there's a deleted scene between Spock's parents where Amanda explains to Sarek that humans have to know when to walk away when they're in an argument because of their emotions. Vulcans *don't* walk away from an argument: they keep arguing until one side is defeated, be it by logic or by physical. And Spock has been vehemently trying to ignore his human side in favor of his more controlled Vulcan side, not understanding that it would only work for so long before the dam breaks.
Sarek *didn't understand* until this moment. That's why it takes him so long to respond: he's genuinely surprised to see his son lose control like this because Amanda, even in her most emotional, never did, and she explained why. Never occurred to him that his son needed to learn to walk away too because if he doesn't someone could get killed.
Spock has been dealing with his emotions in unhealthy way for a long time and the Vulcans can't help him with it because they genuinely don't know how. To them, emotions are to be controlled or purged, not accepted. It works for them, but that's because they are built differently brain-wise. Spock doesn't have the Vulcan-brain chemistry, control for him is a long-time practice and he's only 28, which is young for a Vulcan, a species that can live up to 200 years.
Poor Sarek. For all he knows his son is hurting, he never realized just how much he's failed him as a father by not helping him accept he's half-human. And for all he loved Amanda, the one thing he should have known that she would know better is the one thing his kind fear: accepting the loss of control of emotions is NOT an inherit bad thing. It's part of being human, which Spock must accept he is as much as he is Vulcan.

I honestly love this scene because it packed so much, from emotion to character. And I believe no one tried to stop Spock because like Kirk himself, who instigated the whole thing, they know that this, no matter how painful to watch or in Jim's case, feel, absolutely needs to happen. Superb acting here from all the actors!

I understand Kirk is provoking Spock because Spock Prime told him to. However, if many people have argued that Kirk is more of the guy that does stuff rather than a Captain/leader who makes rational decisions, why would Spock Prime not want his younger counterpart to command the Enterprise? Why does he want it to be Kirk?

+Rendersen22 because at this moment spock was making the wrong choice. the protical demanded they return report and if he pursued the bad guys spock would have felt he was attacking based on emotion or revenge. He isn't really thinking logically he just thinks he is. or in another way the logical choice was the suicidal choice. Instead Kirk knew that it was reckless to pursue the bad guys but the only real choice.

@Rendersen22 Apologies for answering your old comment question regarding why old Spock wanted to have Young Kirk be Captain of the Enterprise instead of his younger self...
In the Original Star Trek, the original Spock (who is also old Spock) has stated in several episodes that he has never desired to be a starship captain. "Mirror, Mirror" is one episode in which Spock prime makes this claim. Also Spock Prime (Nimoy) tells Kirk in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", that it was a mistake for Kirk to accept an admiral position - and Spock Prime gives the original Kirk (Shatner) back the Enterprise.

When I saw this scene in theaters, I was on literal pins and needles, because I knew Kirk was going to unleash a whole slew of insults and all manner of ways to get Spock’s blood boiling. And Kirk knew exactly how to push Spock’s buttons. And for anyone not paying attention, and who think Kirk is a regular human punching bag, I do have to point out that Vulcans, Romulans, and even Khan are all enhanced super-beings with ten times the strength of a normal human being. So, if Kirk was getting tossed around like a rag doll, it’s because against super-beings, Kirk is little more than a mere child sitting at the grownups table. And the point wasn’t to fight Spock, the point was to reveal he was emotionally compromised and therefore unfit to serve as captain of the Enterprise.
