I have Jaco Pastorius to thank for my love for bebop. I was getting into jazz in the 70s, mostly listening to the jazz-rock fusion that was in fashion at the time. And I heard Jaco play “Donna Lee” on his bass. (First cut on his first solo album.) I had heard bebop before, but never really listened closely to it. Something about the way Jaco played it made me sit up and take notice. I realized that this was some awesome stuff. Been a fan ever since.

I actually got to hang out for a bit with Jaco once when we had missed his gig upstairs at 7th Ave South Bar, NYC. We were all at the bar. He was just nice as can be and humble and just plain chill! & What a trill too!

@@davidseagalmusic So you experienced “good Jaco.” You’re fortunate; a lot of people had very different experiences with him as he struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues. It’s part of the tragedy of people like him; they need help, desperately, but their behavior pretty much guarantees that people won’t be there for them. (There were people who tried to help him, of course, but he wasn’t an easy guy to help.)

like I said, he was sweet and kool as can be! If he did in fact have bi-polar issues, it certainly has it lows and highs. But now that he's gone, let's dwell on the good!~

Thank you so much for the tutorial David, I subscribed to your channel but I have one question, how do you come up with the fingerings to play different tunes in all 12 keys? I have a good ear but I don't know what fingers should I use when playing the melody and it happens to me all the time when I'm trying to learn heads and solos by ear...Cheers.

    It's hard to learn
How tears can burn one's heart
But that's a thing that I found out
Too late I guess, 'cause I'm in a mess
    My faith has gone
Why lead me on this way?
I thought there'd be no price on love
    But I had to pay
If I could perform a miracle
I'd revive your thoughts of me
Yet I know that it's hopeless
    You could never really care
    That's why I despair
    I'll go along
    Hoping someday you'll learn
The flame in my heart, dear
    Forever will burn
If I could perform a miracle
I'd revive your thoughts of me
Yet I know that it's hopeless
    You could never really care
    That's why I despair
    I'll go along
    Hoping someday you'll learn

I wanna point out that in the sheets that are displayed in the video, at 5:32 . that Fm7 chord, he plays it with a Bb while the sheet says normal B , obviously the version he plays is the correct and not what is displayed :p Correct me if I'm wrong or missing something

Hmm another thing if u may please, at the 24th "box" (sorry i dont know the term in English) D7 chord ontop.. those two 4-note chords... It sounds very weird when I play it... are the notes not accurate to what you played or am I reading it wrong? you play that chord with right hand . :)

Hey David! Since this is a vid from 5 years ago, I’m not sure if you’re gonna see this but I have question:
Will the LH: root/7th RH: 9th/3rd concept apply to any tune one is learning?

  • @rik-keymusic160

Thanks man, it's a very cool arrangement! But in the first chord of the second bar (F-7) that should be a Bb in the melody and in the second chord of that same measure ( Bb7(b9) ) i guess the note in the bass is also a Bb or do you play extensions (flat 9 = Cb or B natural) also in the bass? Probably the B natural in that chord is in the middel?... (I'm learning your arrangement, so i'm not really sure if it is correct what i'm saying but it sounds beter to me.)Please tell me if i'm wrong! :) Regards!

  • @rachelsmename6
    @rachelsmename6 Před 6 lety

I'm practicing learning this song the way you play it, but not understanding why in the unison part why you are learning the melody in the left hand if the finish product does not play the melody in the left hand.

    • @rachelsmename6
      @rachelsmename6 Před 6 lety

Great information! Thank you David! : ) I hope that you continue to make song video's like this. I like the way you arrange your songs. In fact, I would love it if you made a video that explains the how's and why's of arranging music and all the different ways one can do. (if you haven't already) What I'm really talking about mostly is the left hand arrangements. I hope that I'm not asking for too much...just a suggestion or a request. By the way, I do realize that I probably can learn those arrangements by just studying the way you have written them in the songs. So if you choose not to make that kind of video, I know that I have this option too. Keep up the fantastic work!

he used extension. in C the E is the 3rd, A the 13th, and D is the 9th. so in this chase i think he played Cmaj13
