in US, the phrase is easily used for someone clearly smart enough to continue on w/ academic but takes another path ... so I'm genuinely asking, how do you phrase it for that situation?

Tim Hirst not true. You can leave at 16. However, depending on your birthday you may have to stick around until Christmas during 5th year of high school (this is just Scotland cause for some reason we follow the English law even though our school starts and ends at different dates).
5th and 6th year of high school is optional. Just like University and College are optional.

Kate did not 'drop out' of school at 16. She attended a theatre school and completed her GCSE's, which are the British equivalent of graduating high school. She simply didn't attend 6th form college or university, which was not uncommon in the 1990's. Also working in a sandwich shop is a pretty normal (even good) job for a 16 yr old with no other work experience.
Please stop with the rags to riches angle, she was a middle class teenager who already had an agent and had been on TV by the time she got lucky and scored a movie role. She doesn't need to be cinder-frickin'-rella for her story to be interesting. She's great anyway, so focus on the true bits and don't make shit up, it's insulting to both her and your audience.
Yeah, it's annoyed me as well. Only in the last few years are kids required to carry on with either 6th form or go to college or something in education.

She´s one of the most genuine people in Hollywood, you can really tell she´s just good in her own skin and a wonderful person.
What I love about her the most, is that she is a normal person, someone you can have as a friend. She also a real woman, her body, her face, not mentioning her talent.

I did; I left school at 16 and joined the British Army, where I got my degree in Electrical Engineering.
Leaving school at 16, you’re not viewed as a “high school dropout” like you are in America; many people choose apprenticeships over university.
There are kids in the UK who leave school before even getting the certification needed to leave school at 16. I don't know if Kate was one of them, but I knew of some.

Misleading title. Compulsory education is only until 16 in the UK, you then have the the option to work, to an apprenticeship or do A-Levels.
Yeah I "left" at 15 as school ended July and I was 16 in the August.

Winslet, Hudson, Blanchett, Moss, Beckinsale, Perry, Moss, Olson, Mulgrew, Middleton, Walsh.. many more...You name it...Its like 50 of them and I love them all... I love them so much that I am no longer able too see one Kate from the other... Hell, if I had a kid and he was a boy, I might have named him Kate (no I wouldn't do that) but u see what i mean... its like 80s generation went on sale and we only had one name.......and all of them became something, except me... grrrr
