The Rashtrakuta Dynasty | That Time a South Indian Empire Conquered the Heart of North India

This video is about the Kannada Rashtrakuta Dynasty, which established a powerful, highly-militaristic empire that ruled for over two hundred years. The Rashtrakutas "Tripartite" struggle with the Pratiharas and the Palas over the heart of North India -- Kannauj -- is fundamental to the politics and history of the early medieval era in India.
It may surprise many casual Indian history buffs to learn that for many decades between the 8th and 10th centuries CE, there were Kannada speaking soldiers and nobles conquering and administering large swathes of North, West, and Central India.
    Enjoy!

Indian historians have not been diligent in unearthing ancient manuscripts and sources. Much of what we know was done by British historians. Amonghavarsha is well known because he wrote or put his name on Kaviraja marga and other works and probably completed the Ellora temple

@Saurav Singh If you are going to blame commies or anybody else, you need to back up your statements with logical arguments and facts of why you think that is so. You have hardly done that. If you are thinking of school textbooks, are you aware that school curriculum including textbooks are decided by individual states. Delhi or commies do not have a say in the matter. If you are thinking of University education, that is also the case with the exception of Central Universities. The vast majority of colleges and Universities are either private or run by state boards and curriculums are set by the University board based on the degree of autonomy the University has from the state government. . Regarding the Kushan empire, thee is plenty of material on that even in school textbooks which mention Kanishka and the Buddhist council. If there is a bias, it is perhaps regional. In the South we never heard of the Pala kingdom in Bengal, while in the North the Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, are barely mentioned. A better word than bias is parochialism, an intellectual laziness to engage with eh vast and complex history of India.

Evidence for human habitation in Karnataka exists until at least the 2nd millennium BCE, and it is postulated to have had contact with the Indus Valley civilisation. The existence of artifacts (such as Roman coins) shows Karnataka was involved in trade as early as the 1st century CE. In the 4th century BCE the land was ruled by the Mauryans and Jainism was very popular. After the Mauryas, parts of Karnataka were variously ruled by dynasties either ethnically Kannadiga or outside. The Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas and Holysalas were some of the many major Kannada kingdoms and dynasties ruling the region. The Vijayanagara Empire was founded by Kannadiga chieftains and they were great patrons of Kannada art and literature.
The Kannada language has written inscriptions since 450 CE. Kannada literature is mostly composed of poems and treatises on religious works. Kannada architecture is dominated by stone-carved sculptured palaces and temples. The ruins of Hampi are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Kannada music and dance is rich and varied, including both complex.

For many years, Satavahanas were thought to be Maharashtrians. They were actually Andhras from the Krishna region.
Similarly many do not know that Rashtakutas are of Kannada origin. Eastern Chalukya founder Vishnuvardhan was the brother of Pulakesi the 2nd. His boyhood friend Bharavi wrote Kiratanarjuneeyayam which is a Mahakavya in Sanskrit. The Eastern Chalukyas ruled the Telugu speaking Vengi kingdom for many years. The last in that line got the Mahabharata written in Telugu by Nannaya. He had a Kannada poet Narayana Bhat in his court. But his works are not available. In fact the scripts for Telugu and Kannada were identical till Krishnadeva Raya's period. Even Sanskrit works were written in that script. Finally the Eastern Chalukya lineage merged with the Cholas. Kulottunga was a Chalukya Prince adopted by his maternal uncle who was the Chola Emperor.
The history of the Southern India was neglected by many Indian historians.

    Hello there, odd compass,
I am Anurag.R.Simha from Karnataka. I am a native speaker of the Kannada language. I am solemnly grateful to you for sharing a video based on the forgotten empire, the Rashtrakutas. Unfortunately, the point I lament is, the history we are taught at school. South India is almost completely neglected. Also if there's some south Indian history, it's only the Cholas who receive the spotlight. The Kannadains never get to learn about their history at schools. We don't get to learn about our ancestors and their profound accomplishments. I heartfully thank you for this video. Now I got some information on Karnataka's history. The sketchings of the royal members in your video are marvellously apt for the topic you narrate. I would also like to share with you, the name of another dominant empire of Kannada origin.
The Hoysala empire. An empire that's indelible in the heart of every Kannadain (An anglicised term I created for a Kannada native). An empire with such a profound architecture erasable by none! The empire ruled by the great sovereign, King Vishnuvardhana! I solemnly appeal to you to make a video on the Hoysalas and the architecture of the Hoysalas which I call, the Hoysalan architecture in an anglicised manner.
This video you created helped me to understand with no qualm the vast history of the Rashtrakuta empire. And once again, thank you for the excellent video, old compass (Sincere apologies for not being aware of what your name is). Keep up the good work. May God be with thee.

But Kannada King Pulakeshin II (Immadi Pulekeshi) defeated famous North Indian King Harshavardhana (Shree Harsha) in battle of Narmada. And he given back Harsha's territory. I read about the Rashtrakuta Dynasty a few years back and even as a non-Indian studying world history, they really stood out as a forgotten state from the Medieval Era as a whole. I come from the place where amoghavarsha lived, the capital city of rashtrakuta "manyaketa" present "malakheda" kalburgi district Karnataka. Sad to see the place of manyaketa now' it's disgusting, the fort or the place is completely neglected by both centre and state governments. Ridiculous to see this once an empire which was world top 4 strongest empire and world peaceful, diversified and ruled for 62 years under amoghavarsha is written in the history but none of them given what they deserve neither recognition nor preservation of their places. I bet any north indian know about this empire and even kannadigas(those who speak kannada and lives in Karnataka) know about him his empire and his story. The great amoghavarsha(full name - amoghavarsha nruputunga) was was so kind and humble, once there wad draught and people/animal's were dying after seeing this situation he decided to pray to god/godess, he sacrificed his hand/finger for the people and after some time everything was sorted out. It's not about sacrifice or beliefs it's about a king(that time king had everything and literally enjoyed everything)decided to do such things for the people well being, it's unseen in the past. Due to his culture, tradition, diversity, adminstration and peaceful rule he often compared and named as sothern "the great Ashoka". Present Karnataka bus transportation named after him - "nruputunga ". The 200 history of wadeyars is celebrated and recognised in Karnataka but vijaynagar empire and rashtrakuta empire were completely ignored. Justice still not served.... Jai Hind Jai Karnataka

All those who were wondering why Ghazni succeeded in invading India while Alexander failed, this is the reason. During Alexander's time there was unity among Indian Kings. It was absent during Turkic invasion as we see here.

@@OddCompass I love history bro I looked up Indian history and discovered the most known parts like the Gupta and Mughals but, I knew nothing about these other kingdoms snx empires from the south you've shed light on its awesome. Btw you should do a video on the Western Indian Ocean trade network I believe Indians traded with my ancestors in Zimbabwe indirectly via the Swahili and Somali in the medieval era.

I absolutely will! It’s on the agenda. If you’re curious about East African links, I can also recommend my video on Malik Ambar 👍🏽

@@OddCompass oh I've seen that too loved it I knew about Malik Ambar but, you went into more detail. It was again another awesome piece of history they don't shed much light on. Honestly I hope one day we see more stories in pop culture based in India (done right ofcourse). Anyway can't wait to see more of your content keep up the good work.
