- In this episode I race my '70 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi vs a 2020 Dodge Challenger R/T. Old school vs new school muscle cars, Hemi vs Hemi. Watch it go down at Willow Springs no prep street race style drag race. My 1970 Challenger is Hemi swapped with a 5.7 gen 3 Hemi and a 6-speed manual and the 2020 Challenger R/T has a 5.7 Hemi with a 100 shot of nitrous and 8-speed auto drag racing. It's a battle of classic vs new muscle cars, automatic vs manual transmission, nitrous vs naturally aspirated V8 street racing.

The 1970 challenger is a thing of beauty ❤
Definitely rather have the 70 RT. Great video
Give me the 1970 all day long.Beautiful car.Wins on personality alone.
I mean the 1970 is lighter plus the driver knows how to change gears effectively
As the driver of the 1970, thank you sir
2020 used nitrous?
Absolutely amazing shifting.
Thank you sir
Other than the engine sizes, the power-to-weight ratio is the biggest thing that separates today's muscle cars from those during the glory days and the late 80s into the 90s.
Duude that was sick! I'll take the 1970 100 times outta 100. One of my all time faves.
Not old Vs. New when they both have modern Hemis.
Exactly! It is converted! Lame for a comparison.
It is a pre eagle heads Hemi though.
I agree, this is stupid and a waste of time.
The '70 ran a 14 flat @ 104 back in the day stock .... and those numbers were corrected to sea level specs.
In reality they'd squeeze a mid 14 @ 98 mph.
The 70 is a great looking car. I only wish it had the gen 2 426 hemi to really roast the new car.
Nice shifting bro, and those drone shots are awesome!
Thank you sir!
There are no losers in this race.
Another thing people miss the 1970 rt ran 4.10gears
A 4:10 axle differential ?
Regardless of winner, I’d take a classic pre fuel crisis counterpart every time.
Nice work!! Both performed well. Thanks for sharing :)
It's crazy seeing 2 5.7s running high 11s. Over here making Hellcats a lil scared haha.
Don’t worry, this was a 1000ft (un prepped) track 😂. On a prepped quarter mile we’d be in the high 12s
Bro relax that was not a quarter mile haha
I was thinking the same thing. Those et and mph aren't matching up for a quarter mile.
Those older cars were lighter my thoughts. I thought the Cuda's were more popular in the day. Glad to see someone is responsible & keeping it on the track & off the streets. :)
Excellent!!
Honestly, couldn't tell you were driving a manual. That was some fantastic shifting.
Thank you sir
No Bolts Left Behind, You're the best! I just had to subscribe!
Great video love to see the the comparison...👍
I just love the 1970 BEAST that look 👀 and everything about it ❤😊thank you so much from Sydney Australia 😊😊😊
If the 70 had an old school engine, it would be even more of an ass whippin'.
Would have liked to see a fairer comparison with a 6 speed 2020 R/T. Im surprised to hear this engine was pulled out of a SUV and not a original Big Block Hemi! Very nice runs brotha!
Sooooooo sick of these newer Dodges. Wow, you can BUY a fast car, now try building a fast vintage car!
Modern tires allow the '70 to really hook up.
I own a 70 with a scat pack. One day I’d love to put a Helliphant in it.
Crazy the new one so nuch heavier over the 70 when they were all steel.
I like the pre2015 Challengers because they take more styling cues from the 1970 like the grill & tail lights & hood. Newer ones are more like the 1971 with two grill inserts and separated tail lights
The old one will be around for another 50 yrs... new one won't be running after 10... I'll take the old one.
Great racing.. love the classic.. and for a manual to match a modern auto.. outstanding shifting
I prefer the older quarter mile care my Grandpa Jim had a 1964 440 Dodge 426 Himi Cornett. It would the Quarter mile 11.66 and the difference between his and these two cars is that his was stock.
Awesome! Was a lot of fun, you’ll have to do another one when you come up sometime this summer!
Absolutely man, let’s do it
Beautiful challenger ! Very slick car...
wow, thought the new one would blow the doors off of old school.
That drone was hauling butt!
Badass!!! I’ll take the classic any day! Love classic cars
old school all day long.
I was definitely hoping for a 440 under the hood
Damn, I could imagine somewhere in the mid to high 12’s on the qtr., which isn’t bad for a 5.7 Hemi.
That’s why you were the Crown 👑
Nah, Nova is top dog now
😱
Impressive for a Pre-Eagle Hemi with cam only. I have the same engine in my 05 Ram single cab.
The eagle heads Hemi in the 09+ Ram trucks had about 45 more HP.
Nice, you know your Hemis sir. Yes mine’s a pre-eagle truck motor I pulled out of an 05 Durango. I was surprised too how much the motor woke up with just a mild/medium cam and a tune.
Great content! I think if it was me, I would want the 440 6 Pack in the Original Challenger, or the 426 Hemi, 4 speed Manual. But, whatever works, I am not trying to be an armchair critic here...lol
A big part of my decision to go with a Gen 3 Hemi for this build was weight over the front wheels. I do road race/time attack racing with it (here’s one of my races: czcams.com/video/XcmjrrKhtI8/video.htmlsi=iyQ3m3C46TfShlMM ) and the 5.7 Hemi weighs around 485 lbs, vs a big block 440’s weight at 670 lbs and the old school 426 Hemi’s whopping 840 lbs! Makes a huge difference in weight balance.
@@noboltsleftbehind Ya, that makes sense from a drag racing perspective. Weight reduction equals better ET. I was speaking from a purist's perspective.
I’d only take the older car if it were engine swapped with the engine from a modern Challenger.
Otherwise I’d take the new one
It is swapped with a newer gen Hemi….
And the best use for a drone award goes to….
I want to see the telemetry on the 2020. Lifting?
Really wish the 1970 would have had a period correct engine in it. Cool video nonetheless.
Nice! What 60’ times are you guys doing in these two passes? The lighter weight and 4.10 sure gets you off the line hella quick from the looks of it.
For sure, my 4.10s are what got me out of the hole and able to get out ahead early. They weren’t measuring 60’ at this event, it’s a sort of pop-up drag strip on the straightaway on one of Willow Spring’s road course tracks. But on a regular prepped drag strip I do around 1.9 seconds 60’.
1970❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
You need to bang shift that 6 speed.
So, what's up with the LOW trap speeds?? Both should easilly be 113-119 mph if indeed this is a true 1/4 mile.
It’s 1000ft unprepped, not a full quarter mile
Are those blow valves in the grille on the 2020?
Those are the nitrous purge
Neither car stock is fast by today’s standard
Old school all the way.
Great video! Was that a 1/4 mile run?
Thanks! This was 1000ft unprepped
@@noboltsleftbehind - Outstanding. I'm doing a G3 stroker for my 68 Cuda and followed your series on your build. You do outstanding work and are very methodical and thorough. Keep up the great work!
Very cool!......
BUTTTTTT.....
Nothing more cool than the 1025hp factory built 2023 Dodge Challenger DEMON 170 However! THE LAST & ULTIMATE AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR💪😎🇺🇸
I wish that 70 rt had the 426 wouldve loved to see how it would've done against a modern 5.7. great video nonetheless!
Trust me man, I do too. Unfortunately an original 426 Hemi will set you back about 30 grand nowadays, and that's before you build it up. It's also an 800 pound engine, not exactly ideal for weight distribution 😂
30 grand or more like 300 grand. I have a 14 Plum Crazy purple bought new it was over 40k@noboltsleftbehind
@@thomasthurston6656 for an original Hemi car yeah, no kidding. Those things are going for crazy money nowadays. I meant just buying a 426 Hemi engine to drop in, just the engines themselves for for like 30k
Morning sir found an explorer with a 5.0 buts it’s not an HO will that still work for a 65 mustang swap
What year is the Explorer?
@@noboltsleftbehind 1998
@@Emmanuel-oo5yu that’ll definitely work. I think they’re all HO motors from 96-01
@@noboltsleftbehind awesome thank you
New motor in that 70 is a damn shame…
Think what you’d like, but the truth is it keeps it on the road for us all to enjoy 🤘
Any weight reduction on the 2020? Awesome color on that car too
Not sure but there didn’t seem to be. Still had full interior and everything
Although the car did great i think the 1970 5.7 hemi needs a real COLD AIR INTAKE as you are losing a lot of potential free horsepower with your current air filter inside engine bay
You're 100% correct on that, I see pretty high air intake temps especially at cruising speeds. Building a ram-air box for my hood scoops is on my long list of to-dos.
Original Challenger had a 4 speed manual and maybe a 4:11 sure grip rear end sooo...??
I basically told a guy other day this a new mustang and a 68. He was like my new stang can pop a 120 in a 1/8 mile. I told him idc if it did sexual contact while doing it id still take the 68. Looking good vs being fast any day of the week. Granted yours is as fast but id take your car even if it was much slower than his.
Are those 1/8 mile times ? Burnout box is weird. Tires would be cooled off by the time you get to the starting line.
The 70 R/T is way cooler.
This is a 1000ft track, no prep.
How is it old vs new when they have the same engine?A real challenger with the REAL hemi would be fun to watch against a new one.
Dude trust me, I’d love to have an original 426 Hemi in my Challenger too. The reality is nowadays that engine costs 30 grand or more and that’s just to start, you’d also have buy all of the parts to get it set up and running. Installing a modern Hemi is the way to go for a guy like me who’s building this stuff in his garage with very limited funds and needs something fast and reliable to go have fun racing at the track. Modern engine swaps keep these old cars out there on the road there for all of us to enjoy 👍
@@noboltsleftbehindOh i didn't mean anything bad.Just wondering.
1970 has Street tire radial, Not Race R radials
Love the older one!! I have a “stupid nissan 370z” but I appreciate the classics…. The modern version is just a dime a dozen and with all of the sub prime financing = not the best reputation of most of the drivers put there…
Thanks man! The ‘70 Challenger is my fun car but my daily is actually a Nissan Z car as well, a 1995 300ZX. I actually did a build series on my channel for it. Funny enough here in Southern California Nissan and Infiniti drivers have the same reputation, haha.
@@noboltsleftbehind I think those bad drivers are unhappy and trapped in a fight/flight mode... Or psychology called them "short life path history" types - where - they "live a quarter mile at a time" while endangering the lives of people around them. I live in Phoenix for a while and did the 60 from Gilbert to Downtown - same story - you're in the 2nd lane from the exit lane minding your own business after a stressful day of solving peoples financial problems - and - BOOM - A Nissan Altima driver flys by you - you only see a blurr in your rear view mirror as just 2 seconds ago there was nothing there!!
I now live a in a busy mt resort town - instead of Altima drivers - we have the lifted "dude bro/bruh" drivers here - Some locals and a TON of tourists - same problem - "I wanna see all 63 national parks BRO, in 15 minutes BRO..." So - I pull over and just let them pass...
It sucks trying to own a nice car in constant fear some moron slamming into it... "itz fo duh grahm dude bruh"
Is that a 1/8 mile track? Why are the top end speeds so low?
This is a 1000ft track, unprepped
I used to do 11.30 at the 1000ft track in a 1974 Nova 350 on high lift and duration cammed engine with 12" slicks 530 gears in 9' ford rear end, linelock, electric motor driven water pump, Victor junior intake and 750 holley and foot brake launch in my transpack reworked turbo 350 tranny with 3500 stall.
NHRA are all 1/8 of a mile
That was a really close race. Your car is running good, that 100 shot didn't help him at all
If it was a full quarter mile he would have passed me, he was reeling me in pretty hard on the second run.
@noboltsleftbehind You guys should do it again on a prepped track
@@noboltsleftbehindHad you been running an eagle 5.7 you would have worked him even worse. Gen 3’s in the classic bodies are the way to go. I own a 2010 challenger r/t and a 72 Duster with a 440 and it’s almost a 1000 pound difference. I’m putting a 6.2 demon engine in the duster with an 8 speed, because to me the lx/lc is platform is a wasted effort. I’ve did a little to my 5.7 like 392 factory shorties and cam, ported heads and intake, but that’s as far as I’m going. I only did that because I got all the parts cheap mainly from crate engine take offs.
Hi Friend,
Your vids are awesome! This is Alloyworks! We specialize in the production of automotive radiators, heat exchangers, and cooling system components. We're wondering if we could collaborate. Would you like to put our products to the test and review them on your channel?
Is this a 1/8 or a 1/4 track? My car runs 11.40s @ 119 mph in the 1/4 and 7.40s @ 96 mph in the 1/8, why is the MPH so low?
This is a 1000ft track, so right in between an eight and quarter mile. It's also un-prepped
That was my question! My Hellcat is in the 11's and my MPH is in the mid to high 120's.
@noboltsleftbehind Hi from SoCal, what track is this ?
@@thomasthurston6656 this is Willow Springs Raceway, they do a pop-up drag strip on the long straightaway of the road course about once a month
@noboltsleftbehind I have never been. I have run Pomona and LACR when it was open with my 67 Buick. I wouldn't mind trying my 14 R/T Classic Challenger. Lmao, the color makes it go faster. Plum Crazy. That car has been nothing but trouble from the day I drove it off the lot new. 1 of 36 made, I see why now.
The MPH seem too low for high 11 second runs?
This is a 1000ft track
Get this guy a helmet
Must be 1/8 mile due to the trap speeds. 11.0 times relate to 14.5 1/4 times + - .
If they are satisfied good for them.
This is 1000ft, unprepped. So halfway between 1/8th and quarter mile 👍
That 70's challenger is definitely not stock.
Definitely not, neither is the 2020 👍
So 2020 use nitrous???? To win ? 70 real car for real drivers
70 is the chit, I don’t like the dental gas bs! That’s weak
I was under the impression that it was going to be a old school hemi engine it was up against
The 1970 Challenger looks a hell of a lot better in every way. A thousand times better.
the Biggest Killer is the GEAR set is not right
what are you doing trying to run like a Chevy
you would do better by reworking the math and better gear set there is power you leave on the Table with that gear set
Great run and FUN to watch
and have a great day
70 doesn't have the original motor
It still has the original suspension and that makes a lot of difference.
I thought it was classic stock vs new stock!😒👉the old one looks like it has been supped up! It’s not the original engine!
There shouldn't be any power adders.
Its 2 new cars , ones just got an old body
Nah still got leaf spring suspension, live rear axle, no traction control, steering. Horsepower is horsepower.
no comparison of years
New cars are so bloated with no style. The 2020 hurts my eyes!
Great video. God awful music.
Click bait a modern Hemi vs a modern Hemi one just has juice
The only thing old school is the body............... Disappointing....................
Who's got the coolest car. Yup you do.👍👍👍👍👍🍻
It’s engine swapped- not relevant.
Cars are beautiful, the music sucks
There wasn't a 350 hemi in the 70's.
