  • This week we welcome Jonathan Turner to the show. Jonathan is a board member at Tottenham. We’ve covered ownership, management, players, but what happens in the boardroom of football's biggest clubs? Brought in by Daniel Levy, a lifelong fan with a background in investment and technology, Jonathan brings the breadth of experience and perspective that’s increasingly valuable in football.
How much of a meeting is focused on business strategy and how much is performance? How do you measure success? These are the questions as fans I wanted to understand, and Jonathan’s role at one of the biggest clubs in the country provides a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes world of football governance.
We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Turner to the Business of Sport.
    ----------------------------------------------------
    In Today’s Show We Discuss:
What goes on in the boardroom:
How much of the conversation in board meetings is short term performance related vs long term strategy?
A balance between good business and winning on the field can be hard to find. Why?
The new stadium was a major part of developing Spurs into a global football power. What opportunities have been created by having one of the best stadiums in the game?
Work in the community is a major part of the club’s social value. Why is this so important to teams?
    Tottenham’s global brand
Value of the Premier League to an international audience and the brands it has been able to create out of its clubs
Having an international reach puts pressure on the schedule to travel and take games to places like Australia and South Korea.
It’s estimated Tottenham have over 200 million fans globally. How do clubs measure this and what do they do to maximise the experience of supporting the club for all fans?
Growth of the game in the US has provided incredible opportunity to add further value and audience to the League.
    Jonathan’s role and motivations
A lifelong fan with a huge passion for football, how Daniel Levy asked him to join the board and be a part of the decision making setup.
How a background in investment and tech made him the perfect person to bring a new set of skills and perspectives to the board.
Football clubs, much like any business today, need to think like technology companies. What does this mean?
Building the right infrastructure behind the scenes is a key part of establishing success. How has the board recruited across performance and operations?

So tired of Spurs fans pissing and moaning about Levy. If they didnt have Levy, theyd be pissing and moaning about being stuck in the Championship or the bottom half of the Premiership. I am one of the “New” Spurs fans- started following around 2010. Love the club. I think we will find success in the coming years. Sucks that we couldnt afford to back Poch for those two windows due to the cost of the stadium. We are in great shape. Positive days ahead. Thank you, Daniel. COYS!!

I do understand where you’re coming from. Daniel has done a fantastic job of taking the club forward commercially. However, what’s the point of being the fourth richest club in England after, Man City, Man Utd, and Liverpool, and eighth in the world. We have overtaken Arsenal in terms of revenue and are just slightly lagging behind Liverpool and will probably overtake them in a couple of seasons. Yet, I cannot see a trophy dropping anytime soon. It’s really becoming beyond frustrating. Look at our personnel and honestly tell me that we can compete, we can’t. In the space of three seasons Arsenal have over taken us football-wise and have made significant key signings. We continue, year-in-year-out to rummage around bargain basement mid level transfers. Yes, you need to be prudent but heaven’s sake. Can we a least try to win something? Can we have a signing where people say, “Wow! Tottenham means business this season.” We’ve just brought Archie Gray from Leeds. A good prospect but we’re not going to win anything with him next season. He’s not ready yet. We need key signings now and Archie to build for the mid and long term. Plus players are volatile things that don’t always guarantee success, our recruitment has proven to be poor over the last few seasons. I think only Chelsea as a peer club have been worse (last season). However, even looking at the grumblings at Man Utd over the last 10 years. Their failure is still better than our success. Repeat, their failure is better than our success. They have still managed to win trophies. Yes, plural. Trophies. No one is saying that it’s easy, it’s not. But as my maths teacher used to say, “You must try harder.” COYS!

Football is about glory and silverware. That's top level sport mate. I couldn't give a monkeys about hotels. We didn't even want a new stadium either! All we wanted, and still want, is a team to be proud of. Levy has brainwashed a large section of the fanbase. We're only a top 6 club financially, but this sadly does not translate to the footballing side. Tottenham Hotspur is just a sideshow in the Levy empire. "To Dare Is To Do" Remember!??

Well, you're talking like a fan who only sees the pitch and the team.
But there's more to a club than just on the pit h.
Did Spurs deliberately go out to be trophyless? No.
Do you need money to compete? Yes.
Then how do you get the money? Man City and Chelsea had sugar daddies.
Spurs would need a self funding business.
To generate money, you need to think beyond the normal TV rights. Gate recipes, etc.
Spurs had to increase capacity as well as modernise the stadium for the next 100 years.
They've done fantastically well with infrastructure, and thst should pay in a long run for tip talents on the pitch.
Arsenal couldn't buy decent players for almost 20 years...
Spurs can still compete reasonably well, about 5 years after opening an expensive stadium.
You should also understand that Spurs is a public quoted company... Their business must be above board....
I always say that if all the clubs in the EPL spend £1b on players, only one can win the league, and some will be relegated...
So spending money must be done in a sensible manner, or you're in for a big fall
