Yes. Realizing that Aeolian means 6 is what helps me remember this stuff. Like you said C maj - CDEFGAB are the same exact notes as A aeolian just starting on the 6th note.
The trick to learning modes that helped me was realizing this:
Ionian - 1 Mixolydian - 5
Dorain - 2 Aeolian (minor) - 6
Phrygian - 3 Locrian - 7
Lydian - 4
