You need to know the pentatonic scales -- especially on the guitar. That's because these patterns are popular in guitar solos and riffs. But WHY?
Most people just memorize the pentatonic scales and never fully understand the true power they hold. So this video explains exactly how pentatonic scales work ... and why they're so important in music.

Songwriting is fun when you can actually see what you're doing. I use the familiar patterns of color to explain music theory so you can write songs. - Hudba
this channel is cruelly underrated
I’m glad you like it. (And please tell your friends.) 🤘
Agreed!!
Totally! He is a great teacher!
This excellent work of explaining with these very clear visual helps and connecting them in a way that make sense to dummies like me... will be rewarded, I have no doubt !
I found it and liked it and subscribed!
You explain this so well. The graphics helped me visualize the theory behind pentatonic scales. Well done!
The mode overlay part was particularly insane. I really appreciate the way you approach theory in such a visual/mathematical way. It is way easier to digest in this format for me. Love it!
Mike, your explanations along with the graphics are amazing. I've been playing guitar for 40 years... learing a lot from your channel. thank you.
Such a clear explanation. Your illustrations are also very helpful. So appreciated!!!
Beautifully done. The visuals were great, and your explanations are concise and straightforward
I am so glad I stumbled upon this channel. This is the first time in 11 years of learning guitar that the theory is starting to click. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video (and the rest, which I’m about to go binge watch!) I can only imagine how much effort went into this.
Thanks for another great video. You have joined up different areas of my musical knowledge and inspired me to explore more of the musical knowledge landscape.
Mike you are an unbelievably talented educator, these lessons should be what music in school is. Views should be in the millions!
This is the BEST explanation for this I have ever received!! Awesome. Thank you so much!!
I just wanna say. I’ve been searching for someone like you for a hot minute. You explain it well to me as a guitar player
I'm shamefully new at this guitar thing - like the aspect of learning it. This view indeed solved a lot of my problems and questions concerning the pentatonic scale. I kind of understand what I am suppose to do now, which is by far better then where I was.
This is such a wonderful explanation, your videos help make understanding music theory so much easier.
Thank you! This cleared up a lot for me!!! Exactly what I was looking for! Subscribed!
~Enjoying your way of teaching us...I am new but will learn this stuff because I love music.
This is the clearest explanation of why the pentatonic matters that I've found in a year of self-study.
Thank you!
This is the best video about the pentatonic scale for guitar!!! every guitar teacher needs to watch this.
Amazing, Mike. I now finally understand how about his all works and why. Your explanations and graphics make the pentatonics so easy to comprehend. This roadmap will serve me well! Thanks for sharing. Subbed!
Love the way you explain things! I Liked the video and subscribed
What a succinct and excellent explanation of the pentatonic. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks for the video! Finally a CLEAR explanation! 👏👏👏
Things I learned for few weeks on this channel are insane, more than I learned on my own for 8 years!
Always well thought out theory.
Awesome explanation! Thank you! 🤝
You are a great teacher. Thank you.
Thank you for this video!
Such a great explantion! I play guitar for over 40 years but classical, and I had to learn scales but I never really understood all the theory, no picking up the eGuitar I need to learn the pentatonic...thanks!!!
I just realized something...
The "colorizing" of the notes in the Circle-of-5ths formation allows one to "create" a name for any particular "nameable" grouping.
Example: The (C) Ionian Major Pentatonic is the "Reds-to-Yellow Major Pent".
Example: The (D) ...
..I'll have to graph-and-name all of the rest to see if this is true and/or useful.
I've been "struggling" to see how the colorizing of the "Circle-o-Fifths" actually helps to FORM chords QUICKLY, and this "color-naming" thing might be the "key/unlock" that I need to be able to actually USE the "colors on the fretboard" to SEE/FINGER what I want to play without "thinking about it (translating)" too much.
Thanks again! 😊🤙🏄☘ Aloha nui to 'ya..!!
Great video, connected so many dots for me!
I also subscribe to your Locals and am at the stage in learning guitar journey where scales content is what I need most. This was amazing to see your philosophy applied towards scales. Please go into all scales more and provide pdf version of all scales. This is surprisingly hard to find good infographics of and nobody would do it as well as you. Thank you!!
Thank you for your feedback. I’ll make sure Mike sees this. He’s moving in that direction - you’re on the same wavelength.
every video from this channel is better than any college course i could ever try thank you
Really well explained Mike, I especially found it useful to understand why the notes in the Minor and Major are dropped from the Hepatonic scale to the Pentatonic when you showed them as Tritones in the Circle of Fifths.
Thanks for your feedback, Matthew. And I'm glad this makes sense! Cheers.
Very didactic--- subscribed!
This is gold!
Underrated channel 100%
Thanks 🙏
❤❤Man I said to myself o.k. IT is time for me to learn this easyness of recognizing where and how to improvise. After this video I AM choosing you Master. I will get back how its going. Peace mate, video is very consistent and you are on point. Internet is better with people like you. You have got my subscription. ❤❤❤❤
Subscribed and liked. Phenomenally explained at a depth and level comprehensible for even the entry level. Side notes: I found you from shorts-you should consider doing more. Also, if I can offer any insight on what I would personally benefit from is if you had a video either in the corner or as an added content to emphasize/reinforce/infuse the music theory side with physical practice. Thanks!
Jay, I'm so glad you're here -- and thank you very much for this great and helpful feedback. Cheers.
I know nothing about pentatonic and this is such a a holy revelation!
Amazing videos
It kind of puts things together for the first time for me of course you know I've been three chords and the truth since 1970 but about 10 years ago I hooked up with tremolo guitar shop in Kalamazoo and I've been buying and selling guitars there that I sometimes repair or find
Plus. Scott got me started on playing the minor pentatonic scale with the b minor pentatonic
Several light bulbs switched on in my brain watching this, your circle of fifths explanation was key, Thank You!!
Awesome! Cheers, Dom.
In a 2011 documentary called "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" a cave was discovered undisturbed for 32,000 years. Maybe the most amazing thing IMO that was discovered was a flute made from a bone. The researcher played a perfect "pentatonic scale" with it. It has resonated with humanity for a long time.
I’ll come back to this in 10 years.
I like playing a diminished pentatonic scale (R b2 b3 b5 bb7) over a diminished chord for perfect zestiness
O God, this video is a giant super and fruitful for all musicians. 👍
Thanks for the great videos. Can’t thank you enough. Can you show a video that shows why the dorian, phygian, etc are different. Are they just scales that start at a different note? D is dorian?
If you’re in the key of C and play as if the D is the root instead of the C, then you’re playing D Dorian. Dorian because D is the 2nd note in the 7-note C major scale.
Hello Mike,
I am a beginner guitarist.
I have only one guitar 🎸 & I am unable to play chords.
What are the possibilities?
Please tell me. It would be a great help.
How do I purchase the stickers for the fret board?
Hello can you please guide us how to read advance tabs
Can someone please explain how does mixolydian in chord of C scale has bflat? I’m confused because mixolydian is the fifth note of key of C scale. Thank you in advance.
PENTATONIC C (Do)... MAYOR Y MENOR...
Mayor Do... Do - Re - Mi - Sol - La - Do.
Menor Do... Do - Mi bemol - Fa - Sol - Si bemol - Do.
I gotta tell ya... moving to México is easy. Talking about it ain´t all that easy.
Gracias por tu video, Señor Mike. RT sends, envía, Colonia Centro Histórico, Puebla, México...
I know this one will be a major once I fully understand what's going on here. gotta meditate on this stuff
Been playing for 8 month and i only just start to understand what is major/minor scale and the purpose of it 😭 why this video didnt pop up on my feed WHEN i just started man...
Quick question. I’m a newbie guitar player so forgive me if I’m misunderstanding something. At 1:05 you say we can play this particular scale as it’s all the same pattern, just different octaves. But the pattern of C-D-E-G-A-C appears to be different that’s the same set of notes when comparing the starting point at the 5th string - 3rd fret and the 3rd string - 5th fret. More accurately, the shape of the pattern appears to be different. Am I missing something? Thanks.
Been playing guitar for 2 years now, and I’m just now starting to learn some theory😢
Noob here. So if I think about colors on a color wheel... they are sorted by their wavelengths. It's hard as a beginner to understand why the
"color wheel" of music is sorted into these particular circles. Why is that ?
you need them to noodle at home or for unfortunate friends. unless... you really good, like John Zorn.
Wawww!
💯💯🤟🏻🤟🏻
finally got the answer.. I used to think that Pentatonic was made for lazy noobs who don't want to memorize all 7 notes in scales so I ignored it for yeaars. thanks bru
The only take away I got from this is that penta means 5 and tonic means notes
I need to think about why a C# minor pentatonic works on the key of E.
Oh, it’s the same as E major pentatonic.
Many guitar solos shift between major and minor. (Clapton - Crossroads, Sunshine of your Love, Iommi - Fairies Wear Boots, Iron Man, etc).
Also, an A minor pentatonic scale is Aeolian over A (the I chord) Dorian over D (the IV chord) and Phrygian over E (the V chord).
You’re playing modally by using A minor pentatonic over the I, IV, V, chords in the key of A, for example.
you gotta be careful playing these pentatonic scales in a youtube video. you could get copyright striked by marvin gaye
Overall, 34% of people enjoyed the book, compared to 27% who preferred the movie. Although 82% of those surveyed agreed that "screen adaptations help books come to life," 46% of people argued that film adaptations "would never be as good as the book." Almost 25% declared that movies even ruined the original book. The medieval and modern meaning of album, as a book of blank pages in which verses, autographs, sketches, photographs and the like are collected, derives from the Roman use. This in turn led to the modern meaning of an album as a collection of audio recordings issued as a single item on CD, record, audio tape or another medium. What origins the word album came from? Pros of reading books over movies
There is more depth to a book, scenes are described in more detail, and have more plot-setting scenes.
A book allows the reader to use their imagination.
Readers follow the plot as it was intended by the author. Cons of reading books over movies
Books take a long time to read, sometimes several days.
Some books can drag in the middle.
Dialogues can sometimes be unrealistic in books but come to life on the big screen.
Pros of watching movies over reading books
Movies are quicker than books.
You can watch a movie with a friend, but you can’t read a book with someone else.
You don’t have to concentrate on a movie and there is less need for your own imagination.
Acting is an art form.
Cons of watching movies over reading books
Scenes are often adapted or deleted based on what looks better visually.
Viewers are often left asking questions because scenes from the book not being included.
Characters can often be drastically changed.
WTF? post this somewhere else
