  • This is my manual learning progress in two months on a BMX. This video will show how much the manual machine can help you learn. With a freecoaster you don't have the chain tension as you do on a cassette.

    A random tip I’ve got:
    Air down the tire and it’s much easier to balance. It’s great for learning. As you get better, you can run normal pressure. Full pressure tires just loop out really easy compared to aired down tires.

      Hi Chris, it depends.
      For me having the tires at max pressure help me keep the backwards manual longer.

      I like running with my preferred psi the only reason why is sometimes I get weak from practicing so it helps me do that little extra pull up and lock in, I think the longest one I did was 50 feet at most. I gave up five years ago after I got the link bmx I use now and I got alittle more discouraged on my first week of restarting cause people say I’m to old and stuff and I figured I wasn’t cause I’m only 19

    What helped me get good at manuals was, I pick the front wheel up as if I’m going to hop, but lean back over the back wheel and almost hang off the handlebars until you feel tension in your elbow joints and your arms should be completely straight when in the right position!

    Great video, I'm 46 and trying to learn wheelies and manuals on a MTB. This video is great. It's really hard, I have a manual machine and removed the chain day one, can hold for 45+ seconds no brakes or chain in the manual machine, but on the street, about 1 to 2 seconds... I'll get it one day. But good video. Wish I had the guts to loop out like you do. I just grab the brake! :)

    • @realuptime

      I tried on 26 inch mtb and it wasn't that hard, but on a ebike ... OMG, it's very hard to get into the balance point. The ebike is such a heavy thing. Comparing all of them, the easiest is with the bmx, and of course, the most exciting :)

    For me the best way was to practise manuals everyday, no machine but i started on short grass like a football field, you really need to keep low and and your backside right back, practise looping out firstly like this guy was doing, 1 hour everyday or every other, and slow take your time, they take along time to master, once i was confident on grass and had decent control i went to concrete or the road. Thanks for the video 👍

    Great vid. I have seen a few different styles of manual machine and I have to say i'm digging yours the most out of all i have seen. I noticed you shortened it and removed the rope on the front tire. Do you think this helps because you have the ability to practice looping out on the machine? Seems like your getting practice on how to balance better and also how to get out of it if you go too far.

    • @realuptime
      @realuptime  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Joseph. Don’t focus on the manual machine too much. As it is more unstable, it will help you keeping your balance better. Sometimes I put a rock underneath to be more unstable. Absolutely remove the front rope as you progress. It will tangle and twist with the front wheel ... very frustraiting. Of course you will know better when is the moment to loop out.
      Key point is to practice and relax. Try to make very small adjustments to the balance point. And always mix the manual machine with street!

    Nice vid! Would you say the Manual Machine is easier or harder than trying it 'in real roads'?

    • @realuptime
      @realuptime  Před 3 lety +2

      In terms of muscle effort, on the manual machine your legs are doing more work. ‘On the road’, it is harder to stay, for example 30 seconds. Definetly mix both ways. What I want to point out is that it helps a lot if: you look straight ahead (your brain will get used to keep the balance without thinking); stay lower, but that should not br a rule, because in the future you will have to recover from a lot of “landing” positions; try to use very small adjustments to the equilibrium, otherwise you will get tired very fast; don’t get into bad practices like padaling backwards on a cassette (take your chain off or use a freecoaster); relax and practice.
      Now, after three months I feel like I am controling the manual much easier.

    • @theoriginalmars
      @theoriginalmars Před 3 lety

      @@realuptime You're doing so well. Thank you for the advice! I will make sure to look ahead and make my adjustments gentle and not too aggressive! I can bunny 180, 360 and pull up barspin but the manual was by far the hardest trick for me to learn. I am still trying to learn it! Thanks again!

    • @mortumatiidekkt

      I learned only on the road, bumpy a quarter of the time. In about 2 years, i can turn the bars 90 degrees, but not consistent, and definitely move the bike better, and recover. Haven’t looped out in a year and can steer sometimes. But manuals always come with good and bad days.
