  • Avocado flowers are amongst the STRANGEST in the plant kingdom. In this video we get into the avocado facts of life, why avocados can't self pollinate, and about sequential hermaphroditism!
You need two avocado trees to get fruit. You probably need more if you're attempting it with home grown trees! It's all because of the avocado flowers.

OK I’ve listened to more of your video and now I understand, both of my trees are homegrown from Haas seeds.

Thank you for this. I've been growing Avocados strictly in water for 3 years now. I saw tiny potential flowers but dried by the next two days. First time seeing this in water only.
Pretty cool to see even cooler if could bear fruit in homegrown water fed trees.

Some plants will have both but still be self sterile so they can't polinate themselves anyway. Cherries and chestnuts are examples. any old chestnut tree (true chestnuts, not conkers) so long as it isnt a clone will work but only certain cherry varieties can polinate other varieties.
Could pollen be collected by hand in the morning and then used to polinate the same flowers in the evening for a successful avocado? Or are they at the end of the day self sterile too. Labour intensive for sure but im curious.

I have a raðer obtusely related question. I recently (3 days ago) jarred an avocado seed to start it germinating. Everyþing I've read about ðem says it should take upwards of 2 weeks for germination to start, but my seed cracked after just 48 hours, and I can already see some root formation inside ðe crack.
Is ðis normal, or someþing to be concerned about?
