Prod. & Dir. by - Gregg Carson
Dan Curtis, one of the most prolific TV genre producers of all time (DARK SHADOWS, THE NORLISS TAPES, TRILOGY OF TERROR), and literature's "king of the unusual" - writer Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, SOMEWHERE IN TIME) first teamed to great success on the 1972 hit TV movie THE NIGHT STALKER, about a modern day yet old school Las Vegas reporter (Darren McGavin) who stumbles upon a serial killer who happens to be the present day incarnation of an ancient vampire. The film would inspire a sequel TV movie (THE NIGHT STRANGLER), a weekly series, a 21st century TV redo, and even Chris Carter's THE X-FILES.
In a rare sit-down interview, Curtis talks of the genesis of the long beloved NIGHT STALKER phenomenon.

Facinating interview. Dan Curtis was the man. Best part just might be at 11:31 where Curtis gives some important insight as to why those tv movies that he and others made in the early 70's were so good and why the stuff that's made nowadays sucks. "In those days we had fun."

Dan Curtis was a responsible 3 of the best vampires to appear on tv. ! Jonathon Frid as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows , Barry Atwater as Janos Skorzeny in the Night Stalker and Jack Palance in Dracula . One of the best Dracula pics IMO ever made and most certainly the best one ever made for TV. The Norliss tapes were fantastic it's too bad it didn't get picked up as a series as was intended.

I watched Kolchak when I was 8 years old and this show stuck with me till this day. So many episodes of the X-Files were inspired by this classic show. Loved both movies and I wish there were more seasons of this fantastic cult classic

My all time favorite movies are The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler! Darren McGavin was great in both of these movies and the tv series! When they did the tv series...I never missed an episode! I finally found these 2 movies on DVD and introduced them to my youngest brother & his friends. They didnt think a couple "made for tv movies" would be any good. I proved them wrong! lol They loved them! 😂🤣😂

This man is SO right about what he is saying about how things are done in hollywood today. It is total B.S. and I honestly do not see it ever being corrected.

Such an amazing movie. I remember being paralyzed with fear when I was a kid watching it. And it still stands up today. Interesting PostScript: if you remember back to the credits at the end of the movie they reveal who played the vampire with a flourish - Barry Atwater. I spent the next five decades looking for his name in the credits of shows, for the most part unaware that I was doing it. In spring of '23 I finally saw it at the end of a Twilight zone episode.

The original Night Stalker franchise"2 movies and the most diverse ever series"is a jewel.A monument of television. The rebooted 2005 Night Stalker in my opinion was the biggest epic fail with some of the greatest people of the history of horror, sci fi,and fantasy.i eagerly awaited that and said to myself"this is shit"it was aweful.Thank god for the X Files coming back.Enjoy the X Files when it starts its 10 episode run later this year and next year.David and Gillian love the fans, the material and the fans love them.

What I would love to know is whose idea was it to have the vampire whimpering? Curtis or Matheson? And who decided that Dracula in the 1974 TV movie was said to be a reanimated corpse since the Night Stalker movie never did this, according to my understanding of the film.

Oh the days of 3 networks. Entertainment sure has changed. Now, you potentially have thousands of online channels but you still need a huge budget good talent and a great story. But even if you have all that you still run the risk of no one seeing it and losing money on it. It's interesting to see how things change.
