Clarifications & Corrections:
3:10 - Soldier is talking about Amelia Earhart's love for honey, not Pyro's gender. The joke in its entirety is of course a reference to community speculation about Pyro's gender, but Soldier himself does not have the suspicion. Given how the scene in Meet the Medic is delivered much like the punchline to a joke compared to the above sources which are intentionally player profiles and much more consistently repeated by Valve, it makes a lot more sense for those to be considered "canon". But if you want to eat your cake and have it too, the profiles say he has no *"verifiable"* medical training, so you could argue that the license he refers to could plausibly be an "unverifiable" one, thus both canons can exist as one. Hooray, everyone wins!

@@Casperr The shirt is called ''Jussi-Paita''. It's a common shirt in Southern Ostrobothnia and elsewhere in Finland. But it's not a Russian/Siberian shirt :)
Heavy has a PHD in Russian Literature and even in the Russian dub of the game speaks with a more refined manner than others.

I like the idea that Soldier isn't there because he's the best man for the job, but because he just so happens to know half of the people there, is willing to kill on the cheap, and is surprisingly resistant to dying.
I mean he was never soldier. He just got into hot spot and started to kill every german he saw. So thats much as well be true.

When you think about it, Heavy's friendship with Medic makes sense lore-wise. Heavy states that he's "yet to meet a man who can outsmart bullet", and Medic _is_ a man who can outsmart a bullet. And death. And the Devil.
I think it was scout who can outsmart bullets? Im not very cultured on tf2 lore, hell i dont even play, im just here for the shits n giggles, but i do hear it from tf2 fans in certain comment sections that scout can do that????
@@Dr.Arson_is_on_fire Maybe he can't outsmart them, but he can indeed outrun them: it's an unlockable 'weapon' added later into the game: It's an energy drink which makes him invulnerable for a couple of seconds after consuming, like becoming the Flash in a Popeye-esque kind of way.

I love how Spy, Scout, and Soldier canonically has killed Santa Claus and everyone treats them like heroes for it. Also I believe the reason why Solider is as dumb as he is, is because he has been lead poisoned by the water in Tuefort which also poisoned the entire town.
TBF, the Santa Claus of the TF2 universe seems to have a penchant for kidnapping children instead of spreading gifts.

It's funny to me that almost all the mercs are fabulously wealthy for some inexplicable reason. Demoman has the DeGroot estate, Pyro was the CEO of a major corporation, Scout has his priceless Tom Jones collection and lord knows how much Heavy spends on minigun ammo
they're fabulously wealthy because they're mercenaries. do you think a merc works for very little, or even no money?
Mercenary work pays a lot of money because you don't expect them to stay alive for very long.

I like to imagine Soldier’s parents didn’t know about Jane Doe being the name of unidentified female corpses and just named him that by accident.
One of my favorite facts about the mercs is how Medic's blatant ignorance of the hypocratic oath does not mean he doesn't have at least some inkling of how very odd his life is; as when Pauling asks how Medic is reviving them just by pouring a mix of the partially incongruous blood types into each of their bodies; he lightheartedly acknowledges it makes no sense and shouldn't be working. Then when she tries to parse the non-existent logic he becomes very serious about not questioning it in the moment.

It's possible that medic has some awareness that they are just cartoon characters. Like there's more to him than meets the eye. Like he's seen something unknowable. How else could he just casually rip the souls out of his fellow mercs and use them to con Satan himself. Medic knows what's up if you ask me

Fun fact: Scout’s first name, Jeremy, was inspired by Jerma985 (Jeremy Elbertson). When TF2 was being written as a TV show, one of the writers was a fan of Jerma’s TF2 content, and found Jeremy looked strikingly similar to the scout. (I’m not kidding, by the way. You can look this up.)

You missed a large portion of Demoman's backstory.
The parents we see in the comics ARE his biological ones. They simply abandoned him at birth until his "Degroot Blood" manifested when he accidentally blew up his adoptive parents. His real parents then immediately returned to take him in and teach him how to harness explosives.
This is all part of an old and extremely unnecessary family tradition, designed to ensure that Degroots never rely on (or get attached to) their parents.
In a twisted way there's a tiny grain of logic to this, because Degroot tradition ALSO dictates that every Degroot will eventually blow themselves up, meaning it's important younger members of the family know how to cope without parents.
Still, if you ever wonder why Demoman has a drinking problem, and why he sometimes breaks down and calls himself "jus' a one-eyed bloody monster," this is probably why. Dude had a ROUGH childhood.
Oh, yeah. Jobs are also an important part of Degroot tradition. The men of the family are expected to work as many jobs as possible, until they inevitably make a mistake and blow themselves up.
It's unclear what the women do, however considering Demoman's mother has ALSO blinded herself via explosives, it's safe to say it also involves demolition.
Perhaps Degroot women are tasked with experimenting on explosive formulas?

And despite the degroot tradition trying to break down paternal bonds, he clearly loves his mother. For a man as chronically drunk as that to not lash out at her, he must really love her.

My favorite fact about the mercs is that if you play as red scout, you can sometimes here a bird cooing. There’s also a very small chance of a bird flying out of red scout when hes killed, both in reference to the ending of meet the medic

I know the canon validity of this is dubious at best, but we learn quite a bit about Heavy from his guest appearance in the game Poker Night at the Inventory
Here is a couple of them:
- Heavy got his PHD in literature from the Soviet College of Mines, Farms and Science. Heavy also uses his PHD in his line of work "more than you think"
- When asked by Tycho if he has any hobbies, Heavy states he collects rare coins. However, he only does so to melt them down and create custom bullets for his miniguns (which could be why his guns are so expensive to fire).
- Heavy has taken boxing classes. In his school, students had to sign up for either goat herding or boxing. He didn't like it at first but grew to love it.
- Heavy finds red-haired women attractive. This comes up after Tycho mentions his girlfrend.
- Heavy's favorite movies are The Dirty Dozen and the first twenty minutes of Rocky IV.
-Heavy's favorite book is Tsar/King Hunger by Leonid Andreyev
- Heavy has recurring nightmares of either himself or his teammates being killed.

You kinda get why Sniper is such a reclusve when u know he is actually a Kiwi, he probably felt super out of the environment of Australium buff people, leading to him adopting a more aloof nature.
I think this is supported by his lines in the comics about how he never "grew australia-shaped chest hair" and preferred to pelt his classmates with rocks from trees instead of fighting hand-to-hand

I always thought it was really sad that Spy was too scared to confess to scout who he was with his true body, even though it would’ve been the last thing Scout took in before he died 😢
You forgot to mention how musically tallented are our mercs:
Scout can play bongos
Soldier is great with brass instruments (Bugles and Trombone to be specific)
Pyro propably knows how to play guitar (as his air guitar default melee taunt suggests).
Engie loves his accoustic Guitar.
Demoman not only plays his native bagpipes, but also was seen playing piano in "Expiration Date".
Heavy really likes to sing, mostly russian classical and folk music, and, let's be honest here, Kazotsky Kick, while it's an all class taunt, is based on a traditional Ukrainian and Russian dance. It would make sense if it was Heavy who would have teached other classes the Kick.
Medic can use his saw as a violin, plus he's great with accordeon.
Sniper knows how to play sax and digderidoo.
As of Spy, while he isn't shown to play any instrument, one can assume, that to impersonate other classes, he must have learned all of the above. Plus, in one of Miss Pauling's lines from Tough Break, The Spy is teaching her how to play piano, using electroshocks.

It’s heavily implied in meet the spy, that BOTH Scouts are actually brothers because Red Spy is canonically shown to be Jeremy’s father and he is shown to be in an intimate relationship with Blu scout’s mother
Jeremy IS the BLU Scout. In "A Fate Worse than Chess" we see it is the Red Spy and Blu Scout that Saxton hires for MvM and these two later star in the main comics. In the 4th Comic, Jeremy says to Saxton "You hired me, we're your mercs!". Also there are two hyperlinks in the main comics to A Smissmas Story and A fate worse than chess, in both Scout is BLU. The RED Scout disppeared after the Gravel Wars ended, we actually haven't seen him in a comic since 2011.

@@ckinggaming5bucketmadness766 Afraid not, the scout that was hired after the Gravel Wars is specifically shown to be the Blu Scout. So even though all the mercs wear red coloured clothes, half of them used to be from Blu before the teams merged. The Red Scout disappeared after the Gravel Wars. Comic 1 to 6 Scout is the original Blu Scout.
There aren't any actual teams. There are just 9 characters who sometimes fight for the other teams because they're hired by both of them.
So there is no RED Scout or BLU Scout, just Scout.
This common mistake is so common and it's fucking infuriating.
@@toxic_shr00m In the Poopy Joe update it is specificially stated there are 18 mercenaries. In "Loose Canon" we see an entire team of nine BLU mercs in one panel, if we go by the "there are only 9" mercs idea then RED at that point would have had noone at all. We've seen both the Blu & Red Heavy and Soldier in the same comic in "Meet the Director". The Administrator went to extreme lengths in "WAR" and "Meet the Director" to stop Red and Blu mercs becoming friends and talking to each other. Why bother if they could swap teams at any point. All the evidence from the comics suggests there were indeed 18 mercs until MvM. Further evidence in "Shadow Boxers" where Soldier didn't know Heavy well, owing to the fact they used to fight on different teams. The 9 mercs only came from a cloing fan theory which is a fun read but has no evidence to back it up.
I'm pretty sure medic does have formal training, because in the meet the heavy video he says "anyways, that's how I lost my medical license" which implies he at one point did have it
My headcanon is that he stole someone elses licence after being thrown out of medical school. And then he proceeded to lose that licence.
I just love how Pyro is almost entirely unknown about, and nobody else knows anything about him except for maybe his family or Miss Pauling, that is if he even has a family, knowing how crazy TF2 story can be. Pyro is definitely my favorite character story wise, due to just everything about him.

I think it's also worth mentioning that rumors started appearing after Scout's official name was revealed that he was named after Jerma985, a popular TF2 CZcamsr at the time who now streams on Twitch and uploads the cut-down streams to his second channel, 2ndJerma. Years later it was confirmed that those rumors were true by one of the TF team members and one of the artists for the comics.

@@tylerduncanson2661in Russian culture it’s considered to be a name’s variation rather than a nickname. Reserved for friends or people that know you well. It’s different from a nickname because absolutely all Mikhails also go by “Misha”. Almost all Russian names have those “friendlier” variations. For instance, my full name is Victoria but shorten version would be Vica.
So Misha IS Heavy’s name but the official passport version would be Mikhail.

People always mention that Heavy is more a doctor than medic but even so, Medic is incredibly smart, having as someone already mentioned, literally outsmarted Boolet. So he may not have a docorate or even be a varified Medic of any kind he still is one or two in intelect.

Great video, as always, but I'd like to throw out some extra facts:
- Pyroland isn't constantly rainbows and colours, a more accurate description of it would be an overexaggerated version of reality according to how Pyro feels like at the moment. Therefore, if Pyro is bored senseless he will perceive reality as dull and grey, if he feels excited about a recently ignited fire it will look bright and cheerful, and if he is infuriated by a certain smokey bear, he will perceive everything as a hellish, flaming landscape.
- Heavy has studied russian literature and is speculated that he has a PHD on russian philology.
- Sniper's "Jarate" is obviously piss, but it's produced thanks to a combination of drugs distributed by Mann Co. that both triple the size of the user's kidneys as well as nullify the pain caused by the multi-organic shutdown that comes as a side effect of said drugs.
- Scout is shown to canonically be "God's gift to Humanity", as stated by the big man himself during the brief time he dies and ascends to Heaven. In fact, Scout's purpose is to get laid with all females and, upon hearing how Scout keeps being rejected, God states that he must destroy Humanity and start anew (thankfully Scout convinces him otherwise before returning to Earth). We also see that the real Tom Jones is in Heaven playing foosball with angels but, in order not to break the illusion that he is Scout's father, the angels re-kill him before Scout notices his presence. This could all be a hallucination by an almost-dead Scout, but it's too funny not to mention.
- Spy has a well-groomed beard under his balaclava, and has canonically grey hair, so he could be older than first impressions give off.
- Demoman's mother is obviously blind, but so was his father. Apparently all members of the DeGroot family are expected to be blinded by explosives at a very early age, and the Demoman still having an eye left seems to be a disappointment to his family.
- Soldier (who, by the way, has no military training whatsoever) went on a Nazi-killing spree in Europe, commemorating his own merits with self-made medals, in an effort to win the war for the Allies. However, unbeknownst to him, the war had long since ended. After some years of this strange crusade, he went back to America.
- Medic did have some form of medical training and even obtained a medical license, but in Meet the Medic he comments on how he lost it after stealing a patient's skeleton.
- The Engie's father is presumed to be the TFC's Engineer, who used to wear an identical outfit as his son's, minus the soldering goggles. Also, the blueprints for the TF2 Engineer's Sentry Gun, Teleporter and Dispenser seem to be a heritage from his own family, precisely Radighan Conagher, his grandfather.
Medic’s full name is also Ludwig Humboldt as A) the Rottenburg MvM hints that he comes from a long line of Mad Doctors. And B) the Devil referring to him as Mr. Ludwig is commonly used to show respect to others, it was popular in the 60’s and 70’s.
All of these are facts and I love how much they tell about the mercenaries in question

Btw the Team Fortress Classic Engineer that the mercs fight in the last comic isn't Engineer's dad. That's just a random guy, who even mentions that he doesn't know how to build sentries.
Mr. Conagher was indeed a part of the TFC team, but he most likely passed away. Meaning that the TF2 Engie is the only Conagher left alive.
Don’t know how cannon gameplay and the “Meet The” trailers are, but if we go off those, I love the fact that one of Medic’s Doves, “Archimedes” is actually stuck and living inside Scout’s chest. As seen at the very tail end of the Meet The Medic trailer, and it occasionally in game when gibbing a scout, who has a chance to have a dove fly straight out of the body parts.
This can only happen on one day each year, Meet The Medic's release date.
Also when capping a point as scout, it counts as 2 ppl capping a point instead of 1. Possibly referencing archimedes being inside scout
My head canon is that medic opened scout up and took out Archimedes. Hence the cosmetic, too.

Actually they use he and she interchangeably in both the meet the team with scout saying "He's not here is she?" And in the comics quite often. And soldier never said he had a suspicion about pyro. It was building up to that but he actually had a suspicion that Emilia Earhart was transporting honey on her last flight.
That's the FNaF Mangle level of screwery I love about the comics towards Pyro's gender. Switching pronouns mid-sentence and using formal titles like Miss and Sir interchangeably are little troll details that are super cool to keep the Pyro's gender a secret. Very interesting.
Unless you saw some translation that says that, scout definitely said, "he's not here is he." Just said it very quickly cause he was panicked.
And in one of Engineer's domination lines aimed at Pyro he calls them "ma'am"
3:11 Just want to mention. Soldier never suspected Pyro being a woman. In the comic, right after that page where he points at pyro, Soldier pushes Pyro aside to reveal a room full of honey, which attracted bears.
In the game, there is a 1/20 chance for bread to spawn when you exit a teleporter as a reference to the animated short expiration date. Depending on the class you're playing as, the type of bread will be different. Scout is a plain loaf, Soldier is canned bread, Pyro is burnt toast, Demoman is cinnamon swirl bread, Heavy is borodinsky bread, Engineer is cornbread, Medic is a pretzel, Sniper is a crumpet, and Spy is a baguette.
It's not related to the lore in any way, but I thought it was interesting enough.

Blu Scout is Jeremy
If i recall, the current lineup is the result of the red and blue teams combining to survive MvM, and both sides lost certain members to ultimately result in 1 member of each class. For example, Blue Scout is Jeremy and Spy was the Red Spy, but upon the team merging they all took up red uniforms since the robots wore blue ones.
What I always find cool about tf2 lore is that they literally do whatever they want with it, creating absolutely insane, but unique and memorable world in process.
Another bit of lore regarding the Engineer in Team Fortress 2 is that the Engineer from Team Fortress Classic is either the father or a major role model to the Team Fortress 2 Engineer.
Nah, he's explicitly his dad. Which is neat, because his dad is the one Classic merc implied to not be a massive piece of shit.
One thing I always enjoy is how you don’t even have to be a fan of the game, yet you can still enjoy the lore of these characters and their story through the comics and etc.
I’m a great example of this as I have no interest in multiplayer games at all, yet I still love the characters and story of the tf2 mercs.

i love how despite being relegated to the "comedy relief" role, Soldier is still consistently one of the most competently combatant mercs in the entire series.
Like- make fun of the bucket man all you want, but he's probably necessarily (and unnecessarily) killed more people than any tf2 merc

I love the Frontier Engineering bit in the comics, making it seem like the Engineer, who has the Frontier Justice, would obviously own the Company Frontier Engineering, but have it be the mumbling and delusional Pyro instead.
These guys are the best. They’re all a rag tag group of psychos who work perfectly together
My favourite factoid has to be Medic's deal with the devil. It's so silly but at the same time it serves for some pretty powerful moments in the story, his death and his vengeance in tandem with Heavy just like in the games. It's really smartly written as it makes sense in its own stupidity, and I like bringing it up whenever I can
A few corrections from what I've understod from the lore:
1- Medic did have real medical training. But his medical license got revoked after a freak accident and abandoning a patient. ( At least if you trust that the medic is being truthful about his past )
2- Miss Pauling accepted to go on a date with scout after the end of "the expiration date". I'd like to pretend there's hope goddamit.
3- Pyro isn't always in Pyromania. Her Pyromania is probably triggered by fire. As you can see in the comics she sees the world as dull and grey while working as a CEO but still can perceive it as it is.
4-From what I've heard Heavy isn't as obsessed with his gun as it's shown in the meet the team videos but rather likes to pretend like he is so that no one suspect nothing more of him more than a big dumb Brute.
5- Soldier was probably a bit more "sane" prior to the game's events. He was the most affected by the lead poisoning in 2fort.
Edit: a few changes to better reflect how i got these information and how much i have confidence in them as facts.
Did Miss Pauling ever directly reject Scout's advances? Because most of the time she just kind reacts like "huh" when Scout tries to flirt with her.

Baxcaber did a video analysis of the main Mercs to divine which team each of them is on (according to the rule that the game’s canon supersedes that of the comics), and came up with a list that puts Demoman, Spy and Heavy on Team RED and everyone else on Team BLU.
When talking about which team the character is, it's best to refer to both of them as the same person, because in the comic Unhappy Returns RED scout mentions an event in A Smissmass Story which features the BLU team instead.

Ever since the Meet the Medic video, whenever a Scout dies by explosive and is rendered into gibs, there is a 1% chance if a dove flying out from where the gibs lay. This is a reference to the very end of Meet the medic where Medic’s pet dove Archimedes trapped itself inside Scout’s chest cavity when he underwent the operation to get the übercharge implant.
TF2 is a lore rich video game with writers beyond incredible. Seeing love for all of this lore is only appreciated and I would love to see more! Please do!

Remember the WAR! update when people pitted the BLU Soldier against the RED Demo to see who would get new items?
For context, the reason they fought is as follows:
The BLU Soldier and RED Demo apparently met outside of work and soon became good friends. The administrator found out about this, and (for reasons unknown) was afraid that they would start talking about work, which would in turn mean they would start talking about her.
She went for the obvious approach: give them each new weapons until one ends the other.
Eventually the pair found out, and became friends again, pretending that soldier won.
Now, how does this fit in to the actual game? Well;
If you don’t know what domination is in TF2, it’s a game mechanic where if you kill someone enough times in a row without them getting a single kill on you, it says in the kill feed that you’re “dominating” them.
When you dominate someone, your character will say a voice line, that will depend on who you’re playing as and who you’re domming is playing as.
If you are a Demo dominating a Soldier, the domination line is something along the lines of: “Take that! but we’re still friends, yeah?”
I love that little hint to their friendship, even after being bribed to kill each-other.
Fun fact: If you are a Red soldier dominating a blu demo, it's an actual mean quote. But if you are a Blu soldier dominating a Red demo, you get the friendly domination lines, due to the fact that the Blu soldier and Red demo are friends.

I can keep hearing the same facts, lore and more about TF2 forever and I'll always enjoy it. At this point I know everything about them, but when I do learn something new it awesome it also great to see you still pumping the TF2 content making sure the spirit never dies
I don't know if it counts as canon (it could be Scout's revival daze-dream), but it does happen in the comics.
After Scout dies, he meets God who is incredibly happy to see him, saying that Scout was "God's gift to women" so they can get laid with him. He gets really mad at mankind when he finds out Scout didn't have sex and actually planned to bring another flood/world disaster, but Scout kind of calmed him down to not blame mankind for being a bunch of dum-dums.
After that he sends Scout back from the dead and giving mankind a second chance (to get laid).
Also Tom Jones gets his neck snapped in Heaven again during this sequence so that's funny.
To that I think that in TF2 universe every persons' heaven is specifically made to suit their personal taste and as such the god simply says whatever pleases Scout the most

Some of it could be said to be contentious but there's also all the info we learn on The Heavy in poker night at the inventory. Like him having a degree in russian literature, being schooled as a child assassin and escaping with his family outside of the USSR
For the Russian literature one, it's debated whether it's canon or not, since the game is listed as non-canon.
But the USSR part is true, in the Meet The Director comics, Heavy's father was an anti-revolutionary who got killed and Heavy's family spent at least 6 months in a gulag before breaking out and hiding in the moutains.
The USSR have sent men to look for Heavy's family, only to be killed and buried by the sisters

important note, the term "factoid" has two definitions, one meaning a small or trivial piece of information, which I assume is the intended meaning in this context, whilst the other, original definition refers to an assumption or speculation that is repeated so often that it is treated as fact. At any rate, my favorite fact about one of the mercs is that one of the many causes of Soldier's stupidity is that he is _the only one_ drinking the tap water local to where the teams square off, and as such is affected by lead poisoning. All of the other mercs were warned, and it's likely that Jane just missed the memo

This video made me realise the mercs "names" are just the name of what their role in combat is. Heavy Weapons Guy, Spy, Pyromaniac,Demolition Man, Scout, Medic, Sniper, Engineer, Soldier are just the names of the classes but it just feels like they are their real names. Like, calling Heavy "Mikhail" or Scout "Jeremy" feels ultra cursed.
a note about Soldier's suspicion:
Soldier said that bears are attracted to 2 things. Honey and you-know-what-else. When he yells at Pyro, he was telling it to move because there was honey on the crashed plane, to tease the readers.
Also:
-The TF Classic engineer is the TF2 engineer's father.
-The Medic DID have a license at one point, but he lost it after (most likely) stealing a man's skeleton.
-The Demoman's birth parents gave him up for a while, possibly went to the orphanage, was adopted, indirectly killed his adoptive parents, and then his birth parents took him in again from the orphanage.
-The Heavy has A PhD in Russian Literature.

I’ve not ever touched the game and I knew a hefty portion of these. Suffice to say, the lore is so entertaining that even people who’ve never played can enjoy it
A detail that would be awesome to see in Team Fortress 3 (hypothetically) would be that Red and Blu have their own version of each Class. Not necessarily with different voice lines but MAYBE different voice actors and DEFINITELY different visual traits. While keeping both versions equally as appealing from either side. A difficult task yes. But it would be great!

I find it very interesting that earlier in 2007 up to nearly 2010 or 2011 The Sniper's actual name was Richard Mundy instead of Mick Mundy. That one former name was hidden by Valve by any chance and we cannot confirm that TF2 comics has anything with the name "Richard" within Mick Mundy's family name.
Fun fact: the soldier was originally refused by all recruitment agencies of the US army in the US so he travelled to Europe on his own to fight in the second world war where he was apparently pretty capable despite his clear insanity and low intelligence. He stopped fighting in 1949 because that's when he was told that the war has already ended.

Only wanna throw in one more quick fact. Apparently, Soldier and Demoman are best friends, but the admin hated this. So she sent Ms. Pauling to say bad things behind the others back to one another, while also giving them weapons to kill each other with, saying that the offer was made to the other character and they accepted. This is even tho the offer was not made to either character before asking the other. This is shown through the in game voice lines that can sometimes happen when you kill the other character.
Edit: I made a mistake, it is when Dominating the opposing character, not just killing.
Also one of my favorite facts of them is that the pyroland isn't entirely how pyro sees the world. Yes the pyro is a bit mentally unstable, having a childlike personality, Being a pyromaniac obsessed with fire, disassociation with the real world, the pyroland itself is because of the goggles on their mask. Because it's an item all classes can wear, making the world look colorful or chearful. Pain sounds turning to laughter, domination and revenge in the kill feed becoming best friends and breaking up, and some maps get a pyroland rework. Now it's not as intense as we see from pyros point of view so it can be believed that they have some form of schiphrinia as well so maybe I was wrong with my initial statement
